#CareerBytes: Memory tips, tricks for UPSC aspirants to remember everything

April 9, 2019 by Nasheman

Tips for UPSC IAS aspirants to improve memory

The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE), popularly known as the IAS exam, is one of the toughest examinations. However, with the right preparation and hard work, one can crack the exam.

However, right preparation alone isn’t enough to crack the exam. No matter how much they study, some aspirants struggle to remember things properly.

Some aspirants might struggle to memorize information properly, despite preparing and revising well. Lack of written practice could be a reason behind this.

One can write as they read to memorize something better. Reading out loud while studying could also help them retain lessons/information for long.

They can practice writing answers and solving previous/sample papers to train their brain to retrieve.

Aspirants should also make notes of important points while studying something as it can be useful in quick revision. Mind mapping to visually organize information and preparing charts, flash cards, and diagrams can help remember important concepts, figures, formulae, historical events, definitions, and other data.

Watching videos or documentaries on the topics they are studying can also help them remember key details better.

Pakistan calls for ‘truth’ from India on aerial dogfight

Islamabad, Pakistan – Pakistan’s military has called on India to share “the truth” about an aerial dogfight at the height of tensions between the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours in February after a US magazine published a report refuting Indian claims that it had shot down a Pakistani F-16 fighter jet.

“This is what Pakistan has been saying all along, the truth,” said Pakistani military spokesperson Major-General Asif Ghafoor on Friday. “It’s time for India to come up with [the] truth about losses on their side including targeting of [a] second jet by Pakistan.”

Ghafoor’s statements came hours after the publication of a report in US-based Foreign Policy magazine that quoted two unnamed US defence officials as verifying that, following a count of Pakistan’s F-16 fighter jet fleet, there were no aircraft missing.

There was no immediate official comment from India on the Foreign Policy report.

‘Legitimate self-defence’

India claims that one of its MiG-21 fighter jets shot down a Pakistani F-16 before itself being shot down on February 27. The pilot of that jet, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, was captured by Pakistan and returned to Indian custody two days later.

Pakistan, however, has consistently denied that claim, saying none of its aircraft were shot down during the weeks of tensions between the two countries. It also claims to have shot a second Indian air force jet during the engagement, a claim India has denied.

The F-16 aircraft are manufactured by US weapons manufacturer Lockheed Martin, and have formed the backbone of Pakistan’s air force for decades.

A large number of the F-16s were purchased by Pakistan under a US security aid programme, which imposes certain limits on how the aircraft can be used.

Those restrictions do not apply to Pakistan’s entire fleet of F-16s, and Islamabad says all of its aircraft – whether purchased outright or through US aid – can be used in legitimate cases of self-defence, such as the engagement on February 27.

“Pakistan retains the right to use anything and everything in its legitimate self defence,” said a Pakistani military statement on the aerial engagement released on Monday.

At the time, Indian officials shared shrapnel from an AIM-20 advanced medium range air-to-air missile used during the engagement – one that could not be fired from Pakistan’s other fighter aircraft – as proof that F-16s were used in the dogfight.

The Foreign Policy report comes at a sensitive time for the Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has touted the recent escalation in military hostilities between the two countries as a victory for his national security stance.

‘Sensitive time’

The recent India-Pakistan face-off is expected to boost Modi’s chances of re-election in the staggered general elections beginning on April 11.

Tensions between the South Asian countries reached a fever pitch following a suicide attack on Indian security forces in the disputed territory of Kashmir that killed at least 40 Indian personnel in the town of Pulwama in mid-February.

India blamed the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) armed group for the attack, with an Indian general alleging that Pakistani intelligence services had “controlled” the attack. Pakistan denied the claim.

On February 26, India launched air attacks on Pakistani territory near the northern town of Jaba, claiming it had destroyed a JeM “training camp” housing “hundreds” of fighters.

Media visited to the site of the air raids a day later found evidence of the attacks having hit a forested hillside and causing light damage to a farmer’s home. While a JeM school was found near the site, there was no evidence of mass casualties, as India had claimed.

Pakistan then claimed to have carried out a series of retaliatory air raids at sites adjacent to military targets in six locations of Indian-administered Kashmir, saying the attacks were intended to show resolve and not to cause any casualties or infrastructure damage.

It was during the aftermath of the Pakistani air raids on February 27 that the aerial dogfight that saw Wing Commander Varthaman shot down, and the accompanying Indian claim of shooting down an F-16, took place.

At the time, US officials told Al Jazeera the Pakistani military had invited US inspectors to visit Pakistani airbases to verify the number of F-16s in the fleet.

“All aircraft were present and accounted for,” Foreign Policy quoted an unnamed US official as saying following those inspections. A second unnamed US official corroboratedthe claim to the magazine.

US officials in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, offered no immediate comment on the Foreign Policy report.

Hassan, Karnataka, Apr 5 : Continuing its strict vigil on movement of VVIPs, the Election Commission officials today searched Car and convoy of former External Affairs Minister and BJP leader S M Krishna at Vijayanagara Check Post in the District today.
This comes close on the heels of subjecting Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy’s car and convoy while he was bound to Karwar and Mangaluru for election campaign yesterday.
Reacting sharply to the Checks by the Election Commission officials, Kumaraswamy had alleged that he was subjected to such check for more than 13 to 14 times during his travel from Bengaluru. “Not only they are checking my car and convoy, even they have checked houses and vehicles of my family members. It is nothing but harassment to the common people by BJP who is misusing the Election Commission machinery. But during search they did not get anything and had to return empty hand,” he told newsmen at Karwar on Thursday.
Former Chief Minister Krishna, who was with Congress for more than 40 years and joined BJP by remaining silent in 2013 Assembly election, has decided to campaign actively for BJP candidates in Hassan, Tumakuru and Mandya. Nikhil, son of Kumaraswamy is the candidate supported by coalition partners in the State, Congress and the JDS.
The Election Commission officials had even searched Resorts and offices of JDS candidate Nikhil in Mandya District recently and camped in the District to keep close watch to prevent any violations of the election code of conducts.

The JD(S)-Congress coalition government has failed to deliver: Yeddyurappa

April 5, 2019 by Nasheman

Bengaluru, Apr 5 : Charging that the JD(S)-Congress coalition government, working for cross purposes, has failed to deliver, Opposition Leader in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly B S Yeddyurappa, who is also the BJP State President said that “the State will have a new government after the Lok Sabha elections”.
Speaking at an interaction meeting, with the media persons, jointly organised by the Press Club Bengaluru and Reporters Guild here on Friday, he said that “thanks to the corrupt coalition government in the State the people have decided to vote-out the JD(S)-Congress combined candidates, fighting the Lok Sabha elections”.
Maintaining that there will be a change of government in Karnataka, in the post poll scenario, the former Chief Minister said that “already discontent is brewing within the Congress and JDS and may come to the fore after the General elections”.
Accusing that the JD(S) which had promised to waive off the entire farm loan has miserably failed in delivering goods, he said that “the JDS-Congress government
in the State had been able to wipe off only about Rs 4500 crore of farm loan as against the promised Rs 48000 crore”.
The agriculturists are in peril, as the price of farm output has crashed and the cost of agricultural inputs is skyrocketing and the state government has no plans or time to address their grievances, the BJP leader said.
Reiterating that the BJP will bag not less than 22 seats among the total number 28 seats in the coming general elections, he said that “the achievement and performance of the BJP government at the Center in the last five years are immense and noteworthy. In the last five years, thanks to the tough decisions, the inflation rate had come down, the GDP growth is on upward trend and the flow of foreign investment is increasing”.
Replying to a question, he said that the party high command had cleared almost all the names, the state BJP had suggested for the coming general elections. “The party’s ranks and files are working in tandem for the success of the party candidates, and whatever discontent surfaced in some places, had been doused off. In Mandya, the central BJP leaders had suggested not to field any candidate and extend unconditional support to Sumalatha Ambareesh, who is contesting as Independent candidate.

This ensures stability & high speeds & unpredictable highway driving conditions.

Rain Brake Support, This technology ensures electronically enabled engagement of the brake pads with the discs when the sensors sense continuous deposits of water on the disc (brakes). This pad engagement is quick but not intrusive, only to make sure the disc remains dry at all times. The Jeep Compass Sport Plus will be available for sale at all FCA India’s 82 sales & service outlets present across the length & the breadth of India.

Junglee

“Junglee Pictures ‘Junglee’ Is an Entertaining Movie For Children & Senior Citizens”
Banner: Junglee PicturesProducer: Priti Shahani  & Vineet JainDirector: Chuck RussellStar Cast: Vidyut Jammwal, Pooja Sawant, Asha But, Atul Kukarni, Akshay Oberoi, Makrand Deshpande, Thalai Vasai, Don & Bhondyaaa,  Vijaya Kumar Arcot Ramachandran, Vishwanath Chatterjee, Rohan JoshiMusic: Tanuj Tikku & Sameer Uddin

The gentle giant, elephant, at one point was a significant part of some very important films. The most memorable film in this regard was Haathi Mere Saathi in the year 1971. Then there were films like Maa in the year 1976, Safed Haathi in the year 1977 etc. that also dealt with elephants & made for a great & entertaining watch. Almost 4 decades later, the jumbo makes a mighty comeback in Bollywood with Junglee. The film has been noticed for its trailer & plot. Moreover, it’s a rare Bollywood film directed by a Hollywood director, Chuck Russell.
The scripted scenario of Junglee Pictures Junglee reveals the story of a veterinarian trying to fight an international poacher’s racket. Raj Nair (Vidyut Jammwal) is based in Mumbai & is a renowned veterinarian. He has an estranged relationship with his father, Dipankar (Vijaya Kumar Arcot Ramachandran), who runs Chandrika Elephant Sanctuary. Their relationship soured a decade ago after Raj Naiur’s mother passed away. On her 10th death anniversary, Dipankar requests Raj Nair to come back. This time, Raj Nair agrees & he’s accompanied by journalist Meera Rai (Asha Bhat), who wants to interview Dipankar for his contribution in safeguarding elephants. Raj Nair is welcomed with open arms by his childhood friend Shankara (Pooja Sawant), who’s also a female mahout. Meanwhile, Kotian (Atul Kulkarni) is a poacher working for a client in Taipei. They realize that an elephant in the sanctuary, Bhola, has unusually large tusks. If they manage to retrieve it, they can get amazing returns for it. Kotian accepts the assignment & after a thorough recce, he attacks Bhola at night. Dipankar however reaches the spot & Kotian kills him. The goons working with Kotian also kill Bhola & escape with his tusks. Raj Nair too goes to the rescue of Bhola but is defeated. What happens next forms the rest of the crux of the film. The main flaw of Junglee Pictures Junglee is that Rohan Sippy, Charudutt Acharya, Umesh Padalkar & Ritesh Shah’s story is very poor & totally outdated. The only plus point is that it educates audiences about the horrors of poaching & wildlife conservation. But audiences also need entertainment along with enlightenment & that’s where this film falters. Adam Prince & Raaghav Dar’s screenplay is ineffective for most parts. There’s a lot the screenwriters could have done here but they don’t & it’s a loss of a golden opportunity. Akshat Ghildial & Suman Adhikary’s dialogues are nothing special & some of them are even awkward.Chuck Russell’s direction is shockingly bad. One expected this director from Hollywood would work his charm & entertain audiences. Instead, he makes it a total mess. He takes too much time to establish & build up. It’s still fine for the scenes of Raj Nair bonding with the elephants as it has novelty value. However, the sequences of Raj Nair & his father are very unconvincing & looks totally staged. Also, he goes overboard while depicting the Indian culture & customs. In this regard, there are some ridiculous developments in the 2nd half which would leave the audiences shocked. It’s unbelievable how it got approved in the first place.

In fact Junglee Pictures Junglee is just 115 minutes long & that’s a big advantage. The beginning portions, depicting the sanctuary & the presence of poachers is neat & sans any complaints. Raj Nair’s entry sequence & the fight scenes at the skywalk are also decent. One expects fireworks once he reaches the sanctuary. His scenes with Bhola & a female elephant, Didi, are also quite good. But the film drags a lot out here with nothing much happening. In fact, this goes on for a long time till the pre-intermission point. The interval point is a shocker & gears up audiences as they anticipate a roller-coaster ride from here on. But sadly enough, apart from Raj Nair’s escape from the prison, no scene really makes a mark. The film also gets silly & absolutely ridiculous here. The sequence where Raj imagines talking to Lord Ganesha is when the film touches a low. The grand finale is also nothing special.

Sameer Uddin’s music doesn’t work. “Dosti” is sweet & is well shot. “Fakeera Ghar Aaja”could have been touching but it comes at a time when the film is really dragging. “Garje Gajraj Hamare”is played in the end credits. Sameer Uddin & Tanuj Tikku’s background score is better & has that big-screen appeal. Mark Irwin & Sachin Gadankush’s cinematography is average in most scenes. Also, too many long & bird’s eye view shots are used & it kills the impact. Chung Chi Li, Parvez Shaikh & Seayoung Oh’s action is entertaining. Special mention should also go to Vidyut Jammwal’s additional action choreography & it adds to the film. Mukund Gupta’s production design is a bit unreal but works nevertheless. Urvashi Shah, Anirudh Singh & Dipika Lal’s costumes are glamorous. NY VFXWala’s VFX leaves a lot to be desired. And it’s very bad in the Lord Ganesha scene. Jayesh Shikarkhane & Vasudevan Kothandath’s editing should have been sharper in the 1st ever half.

Performances wise, Vidyut Jammwal’s act is nothing great but he has a fine screen presence & that helps in the long run. Also, his action scenes are always 1st rate. Pooja Sawant looks stunning & arguably is the “Best Performer” of the film. Asha Bhat keeps her performance controlled thankfully. Makrand Deshpande as Gajja, on the other hand, hams like anything. Atul Kulkarni is passable. Vijaya Kumar Arcot Ramachandran gives a decent performance. Akshay Oberoi as Dev is sincere, in a special appearance. Vishwanath Chatterjee as Inspector Khan is quite theatrical. Rohan Joshi as Jayesh tries to be funny but seriously fails. The same goes for Lars Kjeldsen as Vane; villain in Taipei. Agnelo Chang (Mr Sinaki; buyer of the tusks) and Ania Zeyne (Crimson lady) push the envelope when it comes to giving the worst performances of the year.

Tail Piece: On the whole, Junglee Pictures Junglee is a clichéd revenge drama & reminiscent of the 80’s & 90’s action fare. The use of elephants might attract a section of the audiences but in the long run, it’s bound to suffer at the ticket windows.

Advani’s Blog, Joshi’s Secret Talks Needle BJP Before Polls

April 5, 2019 by Nasheman

lk advani murli manohar joshi afp

The founder of the BJP and its second president, LK Advani, relegated by the all-powerful duo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah to the party’s Margdarshak Mandal (old age home), seems to have revolted just days ahead of voting for the national election.

Worse for the BJP, another founder and third party president Murli Manohar Joshi, denied a ticket to contest, is in active negotiations with senior leaders of the Congress. Authoritative sources told me that Joshi has been offered a chance to take on Modi from Varanasi as a joint candidate of the opposition.

Joshi is reluctant to contest from Varanasi, the constituency he vacated for Modi in 2014, but is still in talks with his Congress interlocutors on contesting from another seat. Joshi, it is learnt, has also decided to go public by authoring a scathing critique of the Modi-Shah BJP. Joshi wants to refer to the crony capitalism charge which is often flung at the Modi government, and also the Rajan list of fraud bank defaulters.

LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi are both upset with the way they have been treated by the BJP recently

Advani, 91, wrote a blog today which seemingly took pot-shots at Modi’s BJP. Advani wrote “in our conception of Indian nationalism we have never regarded those who disagree with us politically as anti- national”.

This is a loaded statement as the Modi and Shah campaign for the elections is built on a national security plank with all the senior leaders of the BJP questioning the opposition’s, especially the Congress’s, patriotic credentials. Advani has seemingly blown Modi’s “Tukde tukde gang” pitch out of the water.

Authoritative sources say Advani met two of the senior most Congress leaders recently and shared his anguish.

Both Advani and Joshi feel extremely humiliated by the Modi and Shah duo. Joshi was told by Ram Lal, a general secretary of the BJP, that he would not be fielded from Kanpur again. Ram Lal told him that Shah would prefer that he say publicly that he does not want to contest.

An angry Joshi reportedly told him, “You are just a messenger, why can’t Modi and Shah face me?” He went public the next day by writing a two-line letter to the voters of Kanpur, saying the BJP did not want him to contest.

Joshi subsequently had meetings with Congress leaders, and various other leaders such as Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also reached out to him. The plan to make him a joint opposition candidate was a result of these discussions.

Mamata Banerjee, the Bengal Chief Minister, immediately welcomed Advani’s blog today. The RSS had warned Shah that Joshi would not take the ticket denial well and would try and queer the pitch for them. Yet Shah went ahead and humiliated him.

Similarly, Advani did not want to contest another election but wanted it to be seen as his decision. Shah denied him even this simple courtesy. Shah is headed back to Delhi to meet Modi and senior RSS leaders to stave off this elders’ revolt.

While a rebellion by the two veterans will not impact the BJP’s electoral prospects much, it will still cause huge embarrassment to the now-divided Hindu family. The opposition is delighted that Modi and Shah can be portrayed as “disrespectful” to the founders of the BJP.

But with Advani going public and Joshi on the simmer, the RSS will be unable to clamp the lid on what is already out of the box. Both Advani and Joshi are the longest serving yatris of the BJP and this could be their last stand in the party they founded.
