Saudi woman barricades herself in Thai hotel to stop deportation

January 7, 2019 by Nasheman

Rahaf Alqunun, 18, has appealed for asylum saying she was abused by her family and fears death if repatriated.

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun says she was trying to escape from her family because they subjected her to physical and psychological abuse.

A Saudi woman held at Bangkok airport who says she is fleeing domestic abuse barricaded herself in a hotel room on Monday to prevent her deportation by Thai authorities.

An immigration official later said she would not be forced to leave the Southeast Asian nation because of concerns for her well-being.

Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun, 18, said she fled Kuwait while her family was visiting the Gulf country and had planned to travel on from Thailand to Australia to seek asylum. She said she was detained after leaving her plane in Bangkok and told she would be sent back to Kuwait.

Alqunun shared photos of herself on Twitter in the room where she has been held since her arrival the previous day, as officials and police gathered outside the door to take her to a plane to return her to Kuwait.

A Thai court rejected an attempt to block her deportation, but hours later the country’s immigration chief reversed plans to expel Alqunun citing concerns for her safety.

“The flight this morning was via Kuwait Airlines to send her back to Saudi Arabia. If she does not want to leave, we will not force her,” chief of immigration police Surachate Hakparn told reporters.

Surachate also said he would meet officials from the UN’s refugee agency later in the day to discuss her asylum plans.

Passport seized

Alqunun appealed for the UNHCR to help her. “I’m not leaving my room until I see UNHCR,” she said in a video posted on Twitter. “I want asylum.”

Rights group Amnesty International released a statement on Monday saying the arbitrary confiscation of a passport “violates the right to freedom of movement”.

The group also said the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has requested access to Rahaf, which the Thai authorities have yet to provide.

“The Thai authorities are bound by the general prohibition not to transfer persons to any place where they would face a real risk of serious human rights abuses. Rahaf is entitled to fair and effective safeguards against any deportation and to international protection,” Samah Hadid, Amnesty’s Middle East director of campaigns, said in the statement.

Alqunun was detained after she got off her flight in Bangkok. She said she had originally planned to spend a few days in Thailand, a popular destination for medical treatment, so her actions would not create suspicion when she left Kuwait.

“When I landed at the airport, someone came and said he would process the [Thai] visa but he took my passport. He came back with what seemed to be airport security and said that my parents objected and said I must return to Saudi Arabia via Kuwait Airways,” she told the Reuters news agency.

Her claim her passport had been seized was backed by Human Rights Watch (HRW).

Alqunun told the AFP news agency on Sunday that her male guardian had reported her for travelling “without his permission”.

‘Losing hope’

She said she was trying to flee her family, whom she accused of subjecting her to physical and psychological abuse.

Alqunun said she was certain she would be jailed if she were sent back.

“My family is strict and locked me in a room for six months just for cutting my hair,” she said.

“I’m sure 100 percent they will kill me as soon as I get out of the Saudi jail,” she said, adding she was “scared” and “losing hope”.

The UNHCR said according to the principle of non-refoulement, asylum seekers cannot be returned to their country of origin if they fear their life is under threat.

Georg Schmidt, the German ambassador to Thailand, wrote on Twitter he had “great concern” for Alqunun and was in touch with the Thai authorities and the embassies of other countries about her situation.

“Saudi women fleeing their families can face severe violence from relatives, deprivation of liberty and other serious harm if returned against their will,” Michael Page, deputy Middle East director at HRW, also said in a statement.

“Thai authorities should immediately halt any deportation, and either allow her to continue her travel to Australia or permit her to remain in Thailand to seek protection as a refugee.”

Another Saudi woman, Dina Ali Lasloom, was stopped in transit in the Philippines in April 2017 when she attempted to flee her family.

An airline security official told activists that Lasloom was heard “screaming and begging for help” as men carried her “with duct tape on her mouth, feet and hands” at the airport.

There was no immediate comment by the Saudi embassy in Thailand and officials in Riyadh.

After Hosadurga MLA tries to immolate himself, BJP workers call for bandh

January 7, 2019 by Nasheman

On Sunday night, Hosadurga MLA Goolihatti Shekar attempted self-immolation outside the police station over a case of alleged mistaken arrest.

BJP party workers on Monday called for a bandh in Karnataka’s Hosadurga after a BJP MLA made an attempt to set himself on fire.

Late on Sunday night, Hosadurga BJP MLA Goolihatti D Shekar, who sat down in protest outside the Hosadurga Police Station, attempted to immolate himself. MLA Shekar poured petrol over himself and planned to set himself ablaze. However, his supporters and the police stopped him from taking the drastic step.

Shekar had poured petrol over his eye in the process and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where is is undergoing treatment for his eye.

On Sunday, the Hosadurga police had seized a truck of sand near Madakere Lake. Hosadurga police had booked the truck driver for illegal sand mining.

MLA Shekar, who had rallied behind the truck driver, stated that the sand was bought legally and was being transported to Hosadurga for the construction of a temple.

Sources in the BJP say that MLA Shekar had called the police and informed them about the alleged misunderstanding.

“The truck belonged to one of the MLAs followers. We have been cracking down on illegal sand mining for a while. We are not targeting people for political motives,” Hosdurga police told media.

The police have registered a case against MLA Shekar under section 309 (attempted suicide) of the IPC.

Angered by this, BJP workers staged a protest in Hosadurga and called for a bandh. Around 10 am, BJP workers went on a protest march on TB Road and closed the shutters of the shops.

January 7, 2019 by Nasheman

By : Pramesh S Jain

Unique initiative by CCB Police around 60 Drug peddlers Paraded at CCB office in Bengaluru :
“Drug peddlers Rogues Gallery will be displayed”.
Drug peddlers and suppliers photos will be displayed in public places as Rogues Gallery their photos will be displayed in MG Road,Brigade Road,Banaswadi,K R Puram and other public places where the drug abuse menace is more.

First time in India it is a history that Bengaluru CCB Police have paraded around 60 drug peddlers to control the drug abuse menace in the city.
In its first of its kind for the first time, the Central Crime Branch sleuths paraded drug peddlers at their office in Chamarajpet, warning them that they were under the police radar.
While parading rowdies is a routine exercise, this is the first time police have done the same with drug peddlers.
Additional Commissioner of Police Crime Alok Kumar with DCP Crime,Girish S,ACPs as,Mohan Kumar,Shobha.K,with PIs,as,Ayesha,Narayan Gowda, with other officers and staff on Friday conducted a drug peddlers parade in a bid to control drug abuse menace in the city.
Around 60 drug peddlers took part in the first ever drug peddlers parade which was held at the Central Crime Branch office.
When Alok Kumar,Addl CP Crime, and DCP Crime,Girish S,was interacting with them, some peddlers as students and others said,we never dreamt of becoming drug peddlers. But our addiction to drugs and the related financial crisis forced us to enter the trade. At least 80 of 100 peddlers are addicts and take to peddling to meet their expenses.A Nigerian national had said that,he entered the country five years ago on a business visa but turned into a drug peddler. An Indian man from Kerala visited us and promised us a bright future in the garment business. He said he would offer us double the Nigerian market price for supplying him jeans material.Trusting him,we came to Kerala and started the business. For the first four months, everything was fine. But he cheated me of over Rs 1 crore and If I go back,I will be arrested as my business partners have filed a police complaint against me he explained to Alok Kumar when he was quizzed what made him to become drug peddler.Another person from Tamilnadu said that,he had developed the addiction during college days.I live in a village near Hosur on the Tamilnadu border and am jobless.Addicted to ganja since college, I discontinued studies and became a peddler.I used to supply ganja to college students and IT professionals in Bengaluru and at rave and New Year parties. Now, I have quit everything and am looking for a decent job he said in his statement to Alok Kumar while interacting.
Alok Kumar,Additional Commissioner of Police Crime told media persons that Over 60 drug peddlers men named in cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 are here.

Our aim is to publicly shame drug peddlers and announce that repeat offenders would be booked under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crime Act, 2000.When we quizzed them and asked about the source of ganja, many drug peddlers said they sourced it from Kolar, Chintamani, Shidlaghatta, Anekal, Hosakote, Chamarajanagar, Kollegal and other neighbouring towns. So we would take the drug peddlers to these areas to identify their suppliers and book cases against them.Drug peddlers photo will also be displayed in public places we also have identified areas where they operate and have made a special team to track their movements. We have put up a list of top 25 drug peddlers in the city so that the citizens can identify them if they get into the drug dealing again.Meanwhile, this is also a deterrent for the peddlers from indulging into drug dealing anymore. As he counselled some young peddlers, who were caught for the first time, Kumar had warned of taking up rigid legal action against the repeat offenders. We need to take stern action against drug peddlers as students and young professionals are falling prey to to the bad habit. But first time offenders need counselling rather than punishment. He even warned the foreign nationals those who have come to India on Student Visa and Business Visa they should stick on that only should not indulge in illegal activities and today many foreign nationals drug peddlers are not here because they are afraid that we will deport them so they have not come to this parade but we will call them and counsel them first and if they repeat again then we will take stern action on them and a team headed by DCP Crime, Girish.S,would take the drug peddlers to the said areas to identify the suppliers and repeated offenders will be booked under KCOCA Act and finally i appreciate DCP Crime,Girish.S,ACPs,as,Mohan Kumar,Shobha.K,PIs,as,Ayesha, Narayangowda and other officers and staff for arranging this peddlers parade in just four days as this parade has not been done in entire India we are the first who is holding this drug peddlers parade to counsel them and bring Control of drug abuse in our city he added.

Upper caste reservation is ‘jumla’: Yashwant Sinha

January 7, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News : Former Union Finance Minister Yahswant Sinha on Monday dubbed as “jumla” (fake promise) the Modi governments move to approve 10 per cent reservation for economically backward upper castes in jobs and educational institutions.

Sinha questioned the government’s intent citing legal complexities and paucity of time as the current session of Parliament is scheduled to end on Tuesday.

“The proposal to give 10 per cent reservation to economically weaker upper castes is nothing more than a jumla. It is bristling with legal complications and there is no time for getting it passed through both Houses of Parliament. Government stands completely exposed,” tweeted Sinha.

According to informed sources, the Union Cabinet approved 10 per cent reservation for economically backward upper castes in jobs and educational institutions and the government was likely to introduce a constitutional amendment bill in Parliament on Tuesday.

Cabinet approves 10 per cent quota for economically backward upper castes

January 7, 2019 by Nasheman

Image result for Cabinet approves 10 per cent quota for economically backward upper castes

Nasheman News : With an eye on the upper caste vote in the coming Lok Sabha elections, the Union Cabinet on Monday approved 10 per cent reservation for economically backward people in general category in jobs and educational institutions.

The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, took the decision to provide for 10 per cent quota for people belonging to “unreserved categories”, including Christians and Muslims, in jobs and education with an annual income limit of Rs 8 lakh and land holding ceiling of about five acres, highly-placed sources said.

A Constitution amendment bill for the purpose is likely to be introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The sources said the proposed move will not disturb the existing 50 per cent reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes.

“The quota will include sections not falling under any provision of reservation such as Brahmins, Banias, Thakurs, Jats, Gujjars, Muslims and Christians,” a source privy to the decision told IANS.

He said that rules will be framed in due course to implement the Cabinet decision.

The decision comes four months before the Lok Sabha polls and after the reverses suffered by BJP in the Assembly polls in the Hindi heartland states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

The BJP was said to have faced the wrath of the upper castes, especially in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, over the amendment brought by the Central government to nullify the Supreme Court judgement in the SC-ST Act last year.

Reacting to the decision, BJP MP Udit Raj said it was a “bold” decision.

However, former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha said the proposal was “nothing more than a jumla” which bristles with legal complications and there was no time for getting it
passed in both the Houses of Parliament.

January 7, 2019 by Nasheman

Nasheman News :  Assuring adequate liquidity measures whenever the need arises RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on Monday noted that liquidity should not become “loose money” and the apex bank would excercise the measures with caution.

The Reserve Bank of India has “a sense” of the current liquidity situaiton and after his appointment as its Governor has announced additional infusion of liquidity via open market operations (OMOs) of Rs 60,000 crore, Das said here on Monday after meeting the representatives of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

“While dealing with the issue of liquidity, I would also like to say that it is something which the RBI is constantlyy monitoring and will take steps whenever there is a need to deal with the liquidity deficit, if it is noticed.

“… At the same time I must also add the RBI would not like a situation where liquidity becomes a kind of a loose money. Any infusion of liqidity will have to be very carefully considered and has to be need-based. So, the caution and care has to be excercised by the RBI, that excess liquidity which sometimes has adverse consequences that is not created,” he added.

Das further said that he will meet the representatives of Non-banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) on Tuesday in Mumbai.
