Maldives police have arrested Vice President Ahmed Adeeb on suspicion of links to a blast on the presidential boat last month that President Yameen Abdul Gayoom escaped unharmed.

Police spokesman Ismail Ali said Adeeb was arrested on Saturday at the airport when he returned from an official visit to China. He said Adeeb has been taken to a detention centre on an island.

Daniel Bosley, a Reuters journalist reporting from the Maldives’ capital Male, told Al Jazeera that it was described as the most anticipated arrival in the country’s history because there was a lot of suspicion and rumours during Adeeb’s week-long visit to China that he would be arrested.

The September 28 explosion took place on board the speedboat when Gayoom and his wife were returning to the capital from the airport after a Hajj journey to Saudi Arabia. The airport of the archipelago state is on a separate island.

Gayoom escaped unhurt but his wife, an aide and a bodyguard were injured.

Authorities said initially the blast could be a result of a mechanical failure.

But they announced later the blast was an attempt to assassinate Gayoom and launched a criminal investigation. The device was placed under the seat usually occupied by the president, who escaped unhurt because he was not sitting there, the government said.

Adeeb has denied that he was linked to the explosion, the AP news agency reported.

Adeeb was a staunch Gayoom loyalist and became the vice president in July at the age of 33. Gayoom was instrumental in promoting Adeeb from tourism minister after the president got his lawmakers in parliament to impeach the previous vice president, Mohamed Jameel.

Lawmakers also lowered the minimum age for president or vice president from 35 to 30 to enable Adeeb to take the position.

Weeks after the blast, however, it was apparent that Gayoom suspected his vice president was involved, orchestrating a series of raids on homes and businesses of Adeeb’s associates.

Gayoom also sacked his defense minister and the police commissioner after the blast.

“At the moment the country is without a defence minister or chief of police, and now it seems (it will lose) its vice president because there has been a huge reshuffle after the explosion,” Bosley added.

Haryana: SIT to probe into death of Dalit boy

October 24, 2015 by Nasheman

death Dalit boy

Sonipat: A Special Investigation Team has been formed to probe the death of a 15-year-old Dalit youth in Gohana here, a day after two ASIs were booked on murder charges following allegations from the family that he died in police custody.

The move to form the SIT-headed by a DSP came as Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar came under attack for claiming that the boy, Govind, had committed suicide.

Police said the postmortem, which was conducted by a board of doctors, showed that the boy died due to hanging.

“The SIT has been formed in the case. The report of the postmortem, which was conducted by a board of doctors, says that the boy died due to hanging. There was also a mark on his neck,” the Rohtak Range Inspector General of Police, Shrikant Jadhav, told PTI today.

On the directions of Jadhav, a SIT had also been formed to conduct further investigations in the case.

“The SIT will be headed by Rohtak Police DSP rank officer Amit Bhatia,” Superintendent of Police, Sonipat, Abhishek Garg said today.

He said the situation in Gohana town was peaceful after protests by the boy’s family, which had alleged that he was beaten by police and died in custody after being accused of pigeon theft.

The two Assistant Sub-inspectors were booked on murder charges and also under sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on the direction of National Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Commission.

Yesterday, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had told reporters here that “the post mortem report will throw light on why the suicide took place and for what reasons.”

He had said the boy’s family was involved in a dispute with another family over some money and pigeon and that the boy was not questioned and he had himself gone to the police station.

Congress had attacked the Chief Minister for claiming that the boy had committed suicide even before the investigation was completed.

“When Chief Minister of the state like M L Khattar will pre-judge a case before investigation, may I ask who will punish the guilty in this country. It is shameful, it is condemnable and it is reprehensible,” chief spokesman Randeep Surjewala had said.

He alleged that it reflected a mindset which is anti-dalit, anti-poor and anti-backward that is “taught in the school of RSS and BJP.”

The Gohana incident had come close on the heels of two Dalit children being burnt alive at Sunped village in Faridabad district.

Meanwhile, in the post-mortem examination report of the teenager, the doctors have mentioned that “the cause of death in our opinion in this case is hanging which is ante-mortem in nature.”

Further the report says, “However, the viscera have been preserved for chemical analysis for detection of any poisonous substance/intoxicant.”

According to Sanjeet Devi, the mother of Govind, “About eight to ten policemen came to our home and put pressure on us to perform last rites then and there.”

“Their behaviour was not good and after we denied to perform the last rites they went back,” she had said.

The deceased boy’s uncle, Ram Nivas, expressed apprehension that police might harass them in future as well. Khattar has announced that one family member will be given job and they will be provided compensation.

BJP got ‘Modi oxygen’, will last till popularity remains: Shiv Sena

October 24, 2015 by Nasheman

Shiv Sena-Modi

Mumbai: Continuing to target its ruling ally BJP, the Shiv Sena today said the former has received ‘Modi oxygen’ in the form of power, which will last as long as its popularity among the masses remains intact.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led party also sent a strong message to the BJP saying its successful Dussehra rally indicated that the future belonged to the Sena and that it was prepared to fight the upcoming (poll) battles alone if needed.

“The BJP has received Modi oxygen in the form of power. This oxygen will last till the subsidy of the popularity ends…Sena is standing firm on its thoughts, struggle and patriotism. The party has never changed its stand on the issues of Hindutva, patriotism, Maharashtra’s identity and issues concerning common man’s life. Our beliefs will not change at any cost,” the Sena said in its mouthpiece ‘Saamana’.

Shiv Sena has waged a war against the enemies of the country. The party does not face challenge by anybody, it said adding, peoples’ support will ensure that the Sena’s flag flutters over Maharashtra in the future.

“The future belongs only to the Sena and the Dussehra rally of the party has sent this message across to everybody. We will fight it out with whosoever is willing to join us, or else, we are fully prepared to fight it out all alone with the confidence instilled in us by the Sena chief. Nobody should dare block our path!” it said.

The saffron party also hit out at NCP supremo Sharad Pawar apparently over hosting Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his hometowm Baramati last week.

“With no work left in Delhi, Pawar has opened a new business of lodging and boarding and finding solace in hosting political leaders at Govind Baug in Baramati. With ageing, Pawar’s politics is also on the wane,” it said.

“Pawar’s politics is something that should not be taken seriously. You never know when he becomes secular and when he starts praising BJP,” the Sena said.

Taking a dig at Congress, it said the Sonia Gandhi-led party has become virtually a non-entity in Maharashtra. “There are no (Congress) leaders, workers and hence no voters.”

Communal clashes erupts in Madhya Pradesh during ‘vjiay juloos’

October 24, 2015 by Nasheman

vjiay juloos

Indore: An indefinite curfew has been clamped in Madhya Pradesh’s Khargone city after overnight clashes between two communities during a religious procession injured over two dozen people including police personnel.

Police lobbed tear gas shells and canned rioters after several houses and vehicles were set ablaze during the violence on Thursday night during the ‘vijay juloos’ (victory procession) which followed the Dussehra celebrations.

The Hindu festivities coincided with the Muharram procession of the Muslims this year.

Sources said differences over the same route taken by members of the two communities triggered the clashes, shattering a fragile peace in the midst of a surcharged atmosphere in many parts of the country.

The Khargone additional superintend of police (ASP) and three other security personnel were injured when rioters pelted stones during the clashes which spread to several localities of the city.

“Extra police forces have been deployed to prevent any untoward incident in the future,” said Dilip Arya, the Khargone deputy inspector general of police.

Police said that the clashes started when some people allegedly pelted stones on the ‘victory procession’ near a popular cinema hall in the heart of the city. This turned into full-fledged clashes as the other group retaliated.

The violence spread to several other localities — Sanjay Nagar, Tevedi, Goshala Marg, Talaab Chauk – where houses and vehicles were set ablaze.  Police said that several families of a community fled their homes as the arson spread.

Kejriwal visits turmoil-hit Punjab, condemns sacrilege acts

October 24, 2015 by Nasheman

Arvind Kejriwal Golden Temple

Amritsar: Terming as painful the alleged incidents of desecration of holy books, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today said it was a “willful act” to disturb Punjab as he prayed at the Golden Temple here for “return of peace” in the state.

It “is unfortunate and painful. It seems it is a willful act by somebody who wanted to disturb peace in the state,” Kejriwal told reporters here after he arrived on his first visit to Punjab since becoming the Chief Minister in February and was set to meet families of two Sikhs killed in police firing during anti-desecration protests at Faridkot.

The AAP leader condemned the police action, saying it was wrong to use force against people who were protesting peacefully against acts of sacrilege.

Kejriwal said it was the responsibility of Punjab government to arrest the real culprits behind the incidents of desecration of holy books, saying no innocent person should be slapped with “false cases”.

He refused to answer more queries, saying he was here to pray for peace in Punjab.

“Golden Temple has great spiritual power and I prayed before the Almighty for early peace and normalcy to get rid of current turmoil in Punjab,” he said after paying obeisance at the Sikh shrine.

His visit to Punjab assumes significance as AAP is eying the 2017 Assembly polls and has re-structured its unit in the state, where it won its four seats in the last Lok Sabaha elections. The fledgling AAP recently suspended two of the MPs for “anti-party” activities.

While paying obeisance at the Sanctum Sanctorum of the Golden Temple, Kejriwal preferred to go inside along with other devotees, ignoring the VIP passage.Thereafter, he also paid obeisance in front of Akal Takht (the highest Sikh Temporal Seat).

Earlier before entering Golden Temple, he was he was honoured with Siropa (robe of honour) and presented a set of Sikh religious books at the information centre.
However, he did not register his visit in the visitors’ book of the shrine.

After paying obeisance, he went to Kotkapura by road to meet families of two persons who were killed in police firing.

Alleged incidents of sacrilege took place at seven villages in the state in the recent past plunging the state into turmoil with Sikh protesters blocking highways and other key roads.

Police have so far arrested six persons, mostly working in Sikh shrines, in connection with the sacrilege incidents.

Punjab police has alleged “foreign hand” behind the incidents of sacrilege even as the Centre has sought a report from the Punjab government on the matter.

Singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya accused of molesting woman

October 23, 2015 by Nasheman

Abhijeet Bhattacharya

Mumbai: A 34-year-old woman from Versova has accused playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya of ‘touching her inappropriately’ and ‘abusing and threatening’ her during a concert of singer Kailash Kher during the Durga Puja celebrations.

Mumbai Police have registered a case of molestation against the singer.

The incident apparently took place at 10 pm on October 23 at a Durga Puja pandal in Lokhandwala which the singer co-founded in 1996. The woman was later escorted out of the pandal by lady security guards following which she went to the police station and lodged a complaint. A case of molestation has been registered at the Oshiwara Police Station. However, the cops say that they will record statements of witnesses before taking any action.

Abhijeet has denied the charges and says he only had an argument with the woman since she was blocking everyone’s view and he had asked for her to be seated.

Abhijeet Bhattacharya was the popular voice for Bollywood actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar in the 1990s. He continued to sing for films like Dhadkan, Chalte Chalte and Om Shanti Om in the past few years, but his voice has been less heard in films now. His last non-film album was Tere Bina in 2003.

Jordan to pursue legal actions for Muslim control over Al-Aqsa

by The Jordan Times

Jordan has carefully examined the legal option for dealing with Israeli violations and will forge ahead with it to protect al-Haram al-Sharif/al-Aqsa Mosque, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said Thursday.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue, Judeh said the past two months saw another extremely dangerous escalation in attacks by the Israeli occupation forces in the West Bank.

There have been acts of aggression and attacks against al-Haram al-Sharif/al-Aqsa Mosque by the Israeli occupation forces or under their protection, he noted, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported from New York.

The minister said all measures by the Israeli occupation in East Jerusalem are in violation of the UN Security Council’s decisions stipulating that East Jerusalem, in its entirety, including al-Haram al-Sharif/al-Aqsa Mosque are within the territories that have fallen under the Israeli military occupation in 1967.

Judeh added that these Israeli acts of aggression have exacerbated the situation in the region, in a way that could lead to a religious war that will be beyond control; especially since al-Haram al-Sharif is a place for Muslim worshippers, exclusively.

This is not to mention the devastating impact of these acts of aggression on chances to resume negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis, he added.

Judeh reaffirmed Jordan’s position in support of the two-state solution, ending the Israeli occupation and establishing a Palestinian state within the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He also reiterated calls to resolve all key issues — such as Jerusalem, refugees, security, borders and water — in a manner that safeguards Jordan’s higher interests.

Judeh warned that the Israeli violations have sparked tensions in the occupied Palestinian territories that could lead to a volatile situation that could explode beyond the control of any party and extend beyond the Palestinian territories, threatening international peace and security.

He stressed Jordan’s constant position in denouncing the targeting of civilians, regardless of the motives or reasons for it.

The deputy premier said Israel should free itself of the shackles of internal coalition tactics and pretexts, which can no longer be taken for granted.

The Israeli acts contradict Tel Aviv’s commitments, in accordance with Article 9 of the Jordanian-Israeli peace treaty, and are not in line with Israeli’s legal obligations, as the occupying power, in accordance with international law, he stressed.

Judeh urged the UN Security Council to shoulder its responsibilities in this regard to record these attacks and prevent their recurrence, after the historic status quo is restored and not the status quo that Israel creates every day at Islamic and Christian sites.

He highlighted Jordan’s efforts to safeguard Islamic and Christian sites in Jerusalem, which are under Hashemite custodianship.

Refugee crisis and anti-extremism

The impact of the crisis in Syria has extended beyond its borders and neighbours into the international community, Judeh said, citing the increasing influx of refugees.

Criminal and gangs are controlling large swathes of Syria, he added, threatening its people.

A comprehensive political solution, on the basis of the Geneva I conference, is the sole solution for the crisis, the minister stressed.

Judeh reaffirmed Jordan’s support for anti-extremism operations in Iraq, stressing the importance of unified efforts and coordination to combat extremism in the entire region.

With regards to the conditions in Yemen, he said Jordan is part of the Arab coalition that is working to restore the legitimate authority in the unrest-ridden state, in the response to the call made by its legitimate government.

Judeh also stressed Jordan’s support for the efforts exerted in Libya to restore stability, urging the different Libyan parties to sign the recently reached UN-brokered peace agreement to safeguard their country.

France bus crash leaves dozens of elderly dead

October 23, 2015 by Nasheman

At least 42 people killed after bus collides with truck and catches fire in country’s worst road accident since 1982.

by Al Jazeera

At least 42 people have been killed in a collision between a bus and truck near the southwestern town of Libourne, officials said.

The bus caught fire in the Friday morning crash that also left the driver of the truck dead.

Images shown on French television showed the coach as a charred shell that had been entirely burned.

Five surviving passengers were brought to hospital with injuries while three others were unharmed, local authorities said.

The interior ministry said the bus was carrying elderly from a nearby village going on excursion.

Local politician Florent Boudie, who had visited the accident site, told BFM-TV that it was unclear what had caused the accident. He said the authorities were considering high speed and weather conditions as
potential factors.

Scores of emergency workers from the region were mobilised to the scene.

The incident was France’s worst road accident since 1982.

“The French government has fully mobilised after this terrible tragedy,” President Francois Hollande said from Athens, where he is on an official visit.

“We are plunged into sadness due to this drama.”

AAP files police complaint against V K Singh over dog remark

October 23, 2015 by Nasheman

ashutosh

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party today filed a police complaint against Union minister V K Singh over his controversial “dog” remark on the Dalit killing in Faridabad and demanded that an FIR be registered against him under the SC/ST Act.

Party legislators Saurabh Bhardwaj, Vishesh Ravi, Rakhi Birla, Hajarilal Chauhan and spokesperson Ashutosh met police officials at Central Delhi’s Prasad Nagar police station in this regard. “The police told us that they will first inquire into the complaint,” Bhardwaj said.

Ashutosh alleged that Singh’s remarks amounted to a violation of the SC/ST Act and said that the police “assured” the delegation of conducting an investigation into the matter that has snowballed into a major political row.

“The police told us that they need to take permission from the higher-ups as filing any case under the SC/ST Act requires approval from a DCP-rank officer,” Ashutosh said, adding that Singh’s status as a minister should not “affect it”.

He also rubbished the minister’s clarification as an after-thought in view of the Bihar polls. Singh had insisted a controversy has been created out of “unconnected sentences”.

“BJP and RSS are inherently anti-Dalit and anti-minorities and that’s why such statements are being issued,” Ashutosh said.
