“NH10 was the turning point in my career:” Navdeep Singh

November 12, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Navdeep Singh

Navdeep Singh had gained instant recognition & glory when he had yielded the megaphone for actress Aushka Sharma’s ‘NH10’, and this was almost after 8 years of lying low after his debut directorial venture ‘Manorama Six Feet Under’. Here in this exclusive interview Editor Ravi Kumar of Film & TV Trade preview, Navdeep Singh speaks about his more than a decade long directorial journey.

You are hailing from an army background. So what made you to choose your career in the film industry?

After completing my education in US & UK and also dabbling with the making of a few commercials side by side out there I had come to India and joined the army but from day one I was itching to do something creative. Over here, I mean in the Army Club’s cantonment arena they used to show us the VHS of Hindi & English films. And so I slowly got drifted into the realms of the magic of Bollywood movies.

Did you face any objections from your family, when you decided to opt for a career in the film industry?

None whatsoever as I had already tried my hands at making commercials in UK & US I decided to follow my passion in India too. So when I reached the Indian shores I instantly decided to make commercials and I ended up doing the commercials of branded products like Lakme, Maruti, Garnier et al.

So your real claim to fame has been in the arena of the commercials & the music videos. Tell us something about your past work!

As said earlier I made commercials and the making of music videos came much later. On the flip side I also started making enough grounds for making my debut Hindi film. Besides I have already told you about the branded commercials I had done.

When did you decide to direct a Hindi feature film?

I had come to Mumbai in the year 2001. Then I took some time to establish myself by making commercials & music videos. And then I planned the making of my debut feature film in Hindi. No doubt it was an offbeat film named ‘Manorma Six Feet Under’. I had initially planned to make ‘Manorama Six Feet Under’ with Irfan Khan, but the initial producer who had come on board jus backed out at the last moment. And since the project was getting delayed day by day Irfan khan too started becoming busy and he too opted out. But finally ‘Manorama Six Feet Under’ hit the celluloid silver screen in the year 2006.

You directed ‘NH10’ after a gap of 8 years. What was the reason behind it?

You see it so happened that ‘Manorama Six Feet Under bagged a lot of critical appreciation but could not hit the bull’s eye at box office. I did have to make serious efforts to bag my 2nd project. And then when I landed up the project named ‘NH10’ its pre – production planning took a lot of time and finally it went on the floors.

How did you plan ‘NH10’?

After the initial pre – production planning like getting the script and stars on board which also included the rece of the locales on the National Highway 10 which also included seeking of the requisite Governmental permissions to shoot. And since it was the debut project for Anushka as a producer we all were trying to make extra efforts for its success both artistically & commercially.

’NH10’ was a perfect balance of realistic & commercial cinema, touching the subject of honour killing in a very different way. Have you done any effort to make the film commercially viable?

No we did not take any effort in this direction. We had landed up a good subject for ‘NH10’ so we tried to present the theme as realistically as possible. We did not temper with it nor did we try to decorate it with the usual commercial trappings of songs, dances and the usual masala entertainment. It was a story based on the true events. With no lecture baazi and it was not even preachy. A simple story told simply, of course retaining the hardcore gruesomeness as far as possible.

How was it working with Anushka Sharma?

It was a pleasure working with her. I would say that she is a fantastic actress. Not only these, she is equally sincere & dedicated actress. The film was shot mostly in night shift but never once did she complain and above all she is a wonderful producer never even once asking how the film is shaping up. There were no objections or obstacles whatsoever raised from her side. It was a smooth sailing all the way.

It is heard that members of censor board wanted a ban on ‘NH10’. Why?

Yes initially they did raise an objection stating that the film was too crude, violent & gruesome. But ultimately I convinced them by saying that it was nothing as compared to what happens in real life. And it will hardly inspire anyone to connect with such crimes. In fact it will prove to be very repulsive for them to hate such crimes.

Is thriller your favourite genre?

Yes you can say that as I enjoy making films of this genre.

If a director gives a flop in Hindi film industry, producers are generally afraid to sign his / her next project. What are your comments on it?

It’s true. Tell me why they would take risk on such flop directors. But one fine day such directors too, get a 2nd time to prove their directorial prowess but it takes a lot of convincing powers to make them to back your project. Directors do find someone who can put their belief in them.

In Hindi industry, cinema with stars is preferred more than the cinema of content. What are your comments on it?

Yes I think so and I totally agree with you. But of late content driven films are proving to be a lot more successful.

Are you looking forward to work with any big star?

Yes of course If they come forward and believe in my kind of cinema. Or else I am happy with my content driven films starring mini stars or debutante actors.

So what is next on your directorial cards?

A lot more which I can’t reveal at this stage. Suffice it to say that concrete & productive talks are going on with 2 to 3 producers.

“The entire process of producing a movie has never been a smooth sailing:” Ramesh Taurani of Tips

November 11, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

ramesh-s-taurani

The musical scenario of Bollywood has undergone a drastic change, especially since the last 1 decade. But a most reputed film producer like Ramesh Taurani of Tips music does not feel so. He is of the opinion that as far as music is concerned it has only changed platforms but it’s for the good as music has now had a far wider reach. Ramesh Taurani discusses at length about his musical journey via his Tips music company which has also culminated into his filmmaking journey too.

Nowadays the business of music has been changed. Has the revenue of music expanded compared to earlier times?

Music has always remained a necessary ingredient of our films. It has now changed its course in varied forms for instance it is now available more on digital platform. It now has a far wider reach. The revenue from the sales of music has always been fluctuating. It was the same story then and it is the same story now.

According to you which were the best era of music in Hindi cinema as far as its quality and not quantity are concerned?

I think after the musical era had mesmerized the music lovers in the Black & white era its best period was from the 60’s to the 90’s. After this it has always been fluctuating by doling out some times bad and most of the times good music.

Piracy of music & movies has always been a big setback for producers as well as music companies. How can it be eliminated completely?

In spite of taking all the precautions to curb this ever growing piracy menace we all have failed to completely eradicate this malaise. Once a few of the pirates are booked for their piracy crimes of music & movies another set of such criminal pirates raises their ugly heads. But one day we will all overcome this so called musical hindrance too.

You started making films as a producer in the year 1996 and had made many successful films. What are the changes industry is facing for producing films nowadays? Is producing a film, nowadays more difficult than the earlier times?

According to me the entire process of producing a movie has never been a smooth sailing process. No matter how much we try but everyone faces some kind of road blocks at every step, at every crossroads. There are many changes & developments taking place time & again but not everything can be summarised entirely out here. Each one us learn from our own mistakes and discover the ways to avoid such hindrances & pitfalls.

One of your films ‘Entertainment’ had a mix report. Tell something about that.

I can proudly claim that all our films made under the Tips banner have done extremely well. But of course ‘Entertainment’ had not registered a decent box office collections in hi end multiplexes in some territories especially Bombay.

Some of your past releases didn’t perform well at the box office. What went wrong with these projects?

The answer to these will be the same as mentioned above. Show me one producer whose each & every films have succeeded or garnered decent box office collections all the time. I can claim that our track record is far better.

Individual producers are vanishing because the corporate companies have made the business out of their reach. Shall the time of individual producers come again?

We individual producers are also to be blamed for this pathetic state of affairs. Why blame only the corporate companies as individual producers themselves have taken up this onus of getting over ruled & dominated by the corporate companies. Now whether the time of individual producers will come back or not only time will tell.

Tell something about your forthcoming ‘Love Shhuda’.

I think it is not the right time to speak about it. But I assure you that it will be a very entertaining musical love story.

Girish’s performance was well appreciated in ‘Ramaiya Vastaviaya’. Tell us something about his role in ‘Love Shhuda’.

He is performing a very unusual kind of role in ‘Love Shudda’. His performing skills are getting better day by day. I think his future is very bright in future in the long run.

Is Race3 on card?

Yes very much.

It is heard that Saif wouldn’t be the part of Race3?

Who says so? He is very much a part of ‘Race 3’.

Movie Review: ‘Yaara Silly Silly’ is a bold love story

November 11, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Yaara Silly Silly

Producers: Bharat Bhushan Suri & Subhash Sehgal
Director: Subhash Sehgal
Star Cast: Parambhrata Chatterjee, Paoli Dam, Vidya Malvade, Parth Suri, Eva Grover, Sukhwinder Chahal & Zafar Dillon
Genre: Rom-Com
Verdict: GOOD

Plot: Yaara Silly Silly showcases a bold romantic comedy born in bed. Yes! You read it right. Soumitro Roy (Parambrata Chatterjee), is a young man who ends up at a brothel with his friends where he meets Mallika (Paoli Dam), a prostitute. When they meet on the 1st night Soumitro Roy is a naïve young man. On the other hand Mallika is a crude prostitute. The 2nd time they meet by chance almost after a gap of 5 long years Soumitra Roy is a married & wisened man and Mallika…….! Love blossoms between the duo.

Aces: Director Subhash Seghal certainly deserves an applause for tackling such a bold & off beat theme of prostitute and her customer which changes her life completely. And both Paoli Dam & Parambhrata Chatterjee have delivered a credibly convicing performance by literally living their roles.

Minuses: The in your face cuss words galore does irritates one a lot and even tends to get on your nerves after a certain point.

Last Word: Yara Silly Silly is a classy film. At the box office turnstiles its future seems bleak but it is bound to create ripples of waves in the festival circuit. Period!

“I had never expected ‘Kis Kis Ko Pyaar Karoon’ to achieve such a runaway success:” Ratan Jain

November 11, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon

Ratan Jain’s name has been synonymous with music through the Jain Bros music company Venus. Actor dabbling with music for year’s on end he diversified into the arena of filmmaking. Ratan Jain spoke at length about his latest release as a producer namely ‘Kis Kis Ko Pyaar Karoon’ as well as other related topic.

‘Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon’ has performed very well at the box office. Did you expect the success of this movie to this extent?

No, not really. Frankly speaking I had never expected ‘Kis Kis Ko Pyaar Karoon’ to achieve such a grand & runaway success. Even otherwise I had not foreseen any great expectations from ‘Kis Kis Ko Pyaar Karoon’. But it all came as a pleasant surprise at the most unexpected moments.

This was the 1st project of Stand up comedian Kapil Sharma, why did you opt for him as a main protagonist?

Any pray why should I not have opt for Kapil Sharma. He is already a household name in the small screen arena having already achieved a cult status of his own. So if he has ruled on the small screen for such a long time then why should he not get a fair chance to rule the roost on the big screen too.

In the past, movies with comedians does not have a good record. But ‘Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon’ has done very well. According to you what made this movie different from the other movies of the same genre?

In earlier movies the comedians did not have important roles to play barring Comic actors like Mehmood, Johnny Walker et al. The other comic actors were either used as fillers or they made flashy appearances in cameo roles. But as far as ‘Kis Kis Ko Pyaar Karoon’ was different because in this Kapil Sharma’s role was that of the main protagonist. And the role was like a tailor made written especially for him keeping in mind his stand comedian image. And Kapil has also done a good job. He will naturally prove to be good for comic actor in the main protagonists role.

This was the new genre for the director duo Abbas – Mustan too. Were you confident enough to keep this responsibility on their shoulder?

Yes I had full confidence in them and if they have proved their directorial prowess in the other varied genres of filmmaking too then why not in the comic genre arena too. And as they have proved by the bikggest box office success they have not at let me down. In fact they have never let me down in the earlier films produced by me.

Nowadays business of music has been changed. Has the revenue of music expanded than earlier time?

Music has always been an integral part of cinema so it will never lose its significance. As far as the revenue part of music is concerned it has always been changing sometimes more sometimes less.

According to you which were the best era of music in Hindi cinema as far as quality is concern?

Right since the inception of music all the era’s had its plus & minus point except the current era which has become more like a cacophony all out to split your eardrums.

Piracy of music and movies has always been a big setback for producers and music companies. How can it be eliminated completely?

One can never devise a fool proof plan completely & totally. There can never be a plan which can help us to eradicate this menace from its roots.

Movie Review: ‘Charlie Ke Chakkar Mein’ is an absolutely clueless movie

November 11, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Charlie Ke Chakkar Mein

Producer: Karan Arora & Picture Thought Production
Director: Manish Srivastav
Star Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Disha Arora, Amit Sial, Auroshikha Dey, Sandeep Vasudevan, Siraj Mustafa etc
Genre: Thriller
Verdict: POOR

Plot: A big delivery of ‘Charlie’ is hijacked, and the ‘bhai – log’ behind it want their ‘powder’ and the people whodunit. Naseer plays the investigating cop, as he & his colleagues sift through some incriminating ‘found footage’ of a bunch of young people sniping at each other in some kind of an underground den with graffiti scrawled on it, and bodies sprawled in it.

Aces: The sole performance Of Naseerruddin Shah as Addl. Commissioner of Police.

Minuses: Most of the other actors have been reduced to caricatures so no wonder they have just sleep walked through the whole film.

Last Word: Drugs, sex, gangsters, youngsters & above all cops. But the mix up of all this hardly gives a feeling of a good film. The entire film is clueless and leaves the audiences frantically hunting for the non – existent storyline.

Movie Review: ‘Wedding Pullav’ is so stale it leaves a bad taste in your mouth

November 5, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Wedding Pullav

Producer: Shashi Ranjan & Anu Ranjan
Director: Binod Pradhan
Cast: Diganth Manchale, Anushka Ranjan, Karan Singh Grover, Sonalli Sehgall & Rishi Kapoor
Music: Salim – Suleiman & Rohit R. Kulkarni

Perhaps cinematographer turned debutante director Binod Pradhan had no clue that his debut directorial offering ‘Wedding Pullav’ will turn out to be such a tasteless recipe which will not be liked by the audiences at all. As nothing can be done to make this dish palatable.

The plotted scenerio kicks off with the engagement ceremony of the ‘affordable dream bike engineer’ Aadi (Diganth Manchale) alongwith Rhea (Sonalli Sehgall). Despite being his engagement day, Aadi is not completely happy, as his eyes yearns to see his London based best friend ‘Lambu’ aka Anushka (Anushka Ranjan), who had promised that, come what may, she will attend his engagement ceremony. Merely a few minutes before the ring ceremony enters Anushka in a typical filmi band-baaja style. Rhea, who hails from an estranged family (with Parmeet Sethi as her father and Kitu Gidwani as her mother) gets introduced to Aadi’s ‘best friend’ Anushka. The grand wedding is all set to take place in Thailand. Seizing the right opportunity, Anushka announces to Aadi and his gang that she is dating a London based painter Jay (Karan Grover), who does nude paintings of women for a living. Even though Aadi pretends to be really happy with the news, deep down he starts yearning to be with Anushka. Thanks to a sudden brainwave by the elders in the family, it then gets decided that Anushka and Jay also should get married alongwith Aadi and Rhea in Thailand.

Although Binod Pradhan has selected a wrong project like ‘Wedding Pullav’ as his debut directorial venture he has indeed tried his best to infuse some sparkling interest but all in vain. Need we say anything more.

Performances wise débutante actors both Diganth Manchale & Anushka Ranjan have to seriously hone up their acting skills to survive in this over competitive showbiz world. Even the other actors have failed miserably to leave a worthwhile impact.

This ‘Wedding Biryani’ oops ‘Wedding Pullav’ is so stale it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Movie Review: ‘Shaandaar’ is certainly not Shaandaar

November 5, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Shaandaar

Director: Vikas Bahl Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Pankaj Kapur, Sanjay Kapoor, Niki Aneja Walia, Sanah Kapoor, Vikas Verma, Sushma Seth, Diljit Dosanjh, Shibani Dandekar, Anjana Sukhani, Niyati & Karan Johar. Music: Amit Trivedi

Director Vikas Bahl (of ‘Queen’ fame) had garnered a lot of critical acclaim from his last Outing ‘Queen’. But in his latest outing ‘Shaandaar’, supposed to be a romantic comedy with all the elements of a family drama, Vikas has seriously failed to woo the cine goers
The film kicks off with an animated sequence with a voice over by Naseeruddin Shah introducing all the characters. The scenario In opens with Vipin Arora (Pankaj Kapur) driving an orphan girl Alia (Alia Bhatt) whom he adopts and brings home where the girl is mistreated by his mom (Sushma Seth) & wife (Niki Aneja). Alia is suffering from a sleep disorder whose world revolves around her adopted father (Pankaj Kapur) and his half sister Isha (Sanah Kapoor). Pankaj Kapur plays a possessive father who is very protective for his daughters Alia & Isha. The movie showcases about 2 affluent families one headed by cunning Kamla Arora a Punjabi Businesswomen and the other headed by money minded Sindhi tycoon Harry Fandwani (Sanjay Kapoor). Both the families are on the verge of bankruptcy and come together for a destination marriage cum Business deal between Vipin’s daughter Isha & Harry’s brother Robin. There is also a wedding planner Jagjinder Joginder called JJ played (Shahid Kapoor) who falls in love with Alia.

Director Vikas Bahl fails to impress the audiences this time. In fact, the film has weak in some departments including Vikas’ direction albeit the film has its plus points its mesmerizing photography, lovely sets, attractive locales and above all some catchy numbers too.
Performance wise débutante Sanah Kapoor is superb. Shahid Kapoor is 1st rate. Alia Bhatt as usual is outstanding while the rest of the cast is just about ok.

All in all this time around Vikas’ ‘Queen’ is certainly not ‘Shaandaar.

NEVINS & NUNEZ AIM TO TAKE SHOWTIME

Showtime & CBS Studios International aim to take Showtime’s sales worldwide to a whole new level, Showtime Networks’ David Nevins & Armando Nuñez at CBS Global Distribution Group said at a Mipcom keynote recently. That will come about, they argued, by their pushing “addictive TV.” The new bar was set by Canada’s Bell Media in a landmark deal this Jan, in an upgrade of its SVOD offer. Via the pact, Bell Media committed to air Showtime owned 1st run series programming, as well as almost its entire catalog of scripted & unscripted series, documentaries & specials, on its premium TV streaming service, CraveTV, as well as its leading pay television service, The Movie Network (TMN). “All of our shows have tended to be in different places in each territory. And the brand strength of Showtime in the US has been at an all – time high. Canada, being just over the border, is the 1st place where there was very high awareness of Showtime, and it was very valuable to Bell Media to upgrade its SVOD service saying: We are the home of Showtime,’” said Nevins. “The next phase of our growth is to put those shows together and make Showtime start to mean something around the world in the same way it means something in North America” he added. 3 factors may well help Showtime’s move into what Nuñez called “portfolio” deals: Showtime’s drive into original production, the power of its line – up, international markets craving for what Nevins & Nuñez called “addictive TV.” Built up by Nevins over the last 5 years, 75% of Showtime’s content is now made up of own – content original shows, said Nuñez. Showtime launched its HBO Now – like broadband service this Jul, via a standalone app, available for iPhone, iPad & Apple TV and online. It also started selling subscriptions over the Internet. “Our base business has never been stronger in US, but I think a lot of our growth in the coming years is going to come through the broadband only homes,” Nevins said. As for the state of the market, Nuñez was asked whether the demand for great content was growing.

“My film Mungala is the perfect depiction of a villager’s life”: Gaurav Bhanushali

November 3, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Mungala

Producer Gaurav Bhanushali deserves a pat on his back for presenting a perfect picture of a village in the times of drought. And how the villager’s suffer more due to the politician’s mean game of using the villagers to win the so-called elections. That apart they also become the victims of a natural calamity.

So how would you describe your film Mungala?

My film Mungala is the perfect depiction of a villager’s life in a rural ambience. First of all the main protagonist Kisan has just returned from the city after being sacked by an American IT company due to recession.

And then?

And then on his return to the village Kisan discovers that the villagers are also passing through a phase of drought, the villagers are now solely depending on tanker’s everyday to fulfill their necessity of water. While they are also being used as a crowd puller for an election rally time & again by the political workers. So Kisan also whiles away his time with his coterie of friends. And then there were news reports in the papers that there was a rainfall due to a research being done on the moon. Instantly Kisan & his friends devise a plan to end the sufferings of the villagers.

This almost sounds like Mungala is an off beat venture. What say?

Maybe you are right but I think the audiences all over will like it. Rural audiences will lap up Mungala, but I firmly believe that even the urban audiences will have a lot of food for thought to ponder upon.

What according to you are the main highlights of Mungala?

First of all I would like to say that it is Vijay Devkar’s excellent directional skills that will keep the audiences all over spell bind. No we don’t want their sympathy, we just want them to realize the villager’s problem minutely & offer us a concrete solution. That apart I would like to mention the names of all my artistes like Lokesh Gupte, Jyoti Joshi, Suhas Palshikar, Ganesh Yadav, Chetan Dalvi etc for going through all the grind and literally getting into the skin of the charater and literally living their roles and lastly I would like to make a mention of my music composers Vijay Gawande & Atul Lohar who have also delivered the goods expected of them.

By the way what was the need to include an item song in such an off beat film?

Mungala is not just an off beat venture, it is also a thoroughly entertaining film. So instead of keeping a tamasha oriented lavani as usual I thought of including a proper item song which would enliven the audiences.

So what’s next on your agenda?

Frankly speaking right now Mungala is my top priority. I am seriously considering of sending Mungala to global fests as in India it has already been an official selection for Sahayadri Cine Awards for “Best Choreography” & also an official selection with 4 nominations for Nashik International Film Festival where it ultimately bagged the Golden Camera Award for “Best Rural Cinema”. Period!
