You can’t stop Pakistani women from thinking, dreaming: Author Taha Kehar

September 29, 2018 by Nasheman

Meet Tanya, the protagonist of a new quick-read from Pakistan, who has “got a pretty good life, working for a Karachi newspaper and smoking-drinking-flirting her way through minor romantic escapades”. The author, Taha Kehar, says that her character is his attempt to cultivate a narrative about what it means to be a woman in Karachi. But are there really many “politically opinionated, liberal, urban women that are both feisty and fearless”, as Tanya is, in Pakistan today?

Kehar, the author of “Typically Tanya”, said that it wasn’t entirely necessary for women in Pakistan (or anywhere else in the world for that matter) to be “liberal” or “urban” in order to have “bold political opinions or take on a fearless, feisty approach to life”.

“Although Pakistan is an inherently patriarchal society where women are subjected to restrictions and excessive surveillance, no measure of constraints can stop them from thinking, dreaming and forging their way in the world. Women in Pakistan have entered the public domain and are reclaiming it by negotiating gender confrontations and challenging archaic norms,” Kehar told IANS in an email interview from Karachi, describing his frame of mind as he shaped Tanya’s character.

He shared that Tanya may epitomise the struggle of Pakistani women, but she belongs to “a privileged segment of Karachi’s elite” that “can operate within a bubble and turn a blind eye to the ground realities”.

“By virtue of her social status, she manages to evade some patriarchal demands and has the freedom to ignore the restrictions imposed by the public sphere. But even then, it would be flawed to assume that she isn’t influenced by patriarchy in her everyday life. While writing ‘Typically Tanya’, I had to remain mindful of these subtle nuances,” he said.

Kehar, himself a journalist, said that he wanted to break away from Western ideas of Karachi as “a battle-hardened, conflict-riddled city” and understand it from the perspective of its citizens.

He also admitted that the male gaze could claw its way into the narrative and possibly even shrink the space for the female perspective. “The primary challenge was to elbow away all male-centric notions to prevent them from distorting Tanya’s perspective,” he said, adding that he discussed his protagonist’s traits with some of his female friends, who spent their days cooped up in newsrooms like Tanya does in the novel.

Maintaining that Tanya’s experiences may not be “entirely representative” of all independent and modern Pakistani women, Kehar, however, asserted that like most of them, Tanya recognises “the importance of making her own choices” and “taking charge of her own life”.

The author, published in both Indian and Pakistani media, said that Indian readers might enjoy Tanya’s humour, her friendship with Inder, an Indian journalist who is reporting from Pakistan. The book might also interest some readers who enjoy political polemics.

Asked to describe his novel for Indian readers, the author obliged, saying: “‘Typically Tanya’ is about Karachi, journalism and relationships between misfits. It is about a woman’s journey in negotiating these minefields. The protagonist isn’t obsessed with marriage and is unwilling to compromise her own dignity at the altar of a groom chosen by a rishta aunty.”

Kehar has previously published a collection of poems and “Typically Tanya” is his debut novel. Published by HarperCollins India, it is priced at Rs 299.

Say ‘namaskar’, not ‘good morning’, says Vice President

September 28, 2018 by Nasheman

Indians should let go the colonial mindset and greet people with ‘namaskar’ rather than with ‘good morning’, ‘good afternoon’ and ‘good evening’, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu said on Friday.

Naidu, speaking at a convocation ceremony organised by the National Institute of Technology (NIT) here, said that while he was not against English language, India should break away from the mindset imposed by British colonial rulers.

“Namaskar is our ‘sanskar’ in India. That is applicable in morning, evening and night too,” he added.

The Vice President said that as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, he had done away with colonial practices which were outdated.

He recalled how, recently, a section of the media misquoted him as calling the English language an illness when he was talking about protecting and encouraging the mother-tongue.

“I did not say it. English is not an illness, English is welcome. You learn (it). But English mind, which we have inherited from the British rule, is an illness. Britishers have gone, their mindset remains,” Naidu said.

Naidu appreciated the institute for not sticking to the customary black convocation gown, routinely worn by students at such ceremonies.

SC opens Sabarimala gates to women aged 10-50

September 28, 2018 by Nasheman

The Supreme Court on Friday opened the gates of the Sabarimala Temple in Kerala dedicated to Lord Ayyappa to the women in the age group of 10-50, saying it was violative of their fundamental rights and constitutional guarantees.

In a majority 4:1 judgment, the top court also read down the provision of Kerala laws that protected the prohibition and said it could not be covered under practices essential and integral to religious practice.

Justice Indu Malhotra, the only woman judge in the five-judges bench, who gave a dissenting judgment.

Chief Justice Dipak Misra reading out the judgment also on behalf of Justice A.M. Khanwilkar, said that subversion of women’s rights under the garb of physiological phenomenon cannot be allowed.

“All devotees are equal and there cannot be any discrimination on the basis of gender,” Misra said.

Justice Rohinton F. Nariman in a separate but concurring judgment said that people of all faiths visit the temples — worshipers are not of separate denomination.

“Religion cannot become a cover to exclude and deny women their right to worship,” Justice D.Y. Chandrachud also said in a separate but concurring judgment.

Holding the Sabarimala temple is not a denominational temple peculiar to any sect, the court said that the Ayyappa temple belongs to Hindus and does not constitute a separate entity.

The apex court also read down the provision of Kerala laws that protected the practice of prohibiting the entry of women in the age group of 10 to 50 years.

There is no plan as such, which according to me is what makes it fun to watch. Our film obviously had a script, but having been a travel show host, made it easier to bring that spontaneity to Dev’s character without losing the essence of the script.”

From Cooking On Set To A Takeaway Joint, Sakett Saawhney Gets Into The Culinary Circuit

Producer Sakett Saawhney is coming up with a takeaway joint. But very few know that the idea behind the venture actually came up while he was shooting a film. “I used to cook during the filming of Zanjeer. We had this tradition that in each shoot schedule, one HOD / artist would cook & get food for the crew. Apoorva, Ram Charan, Sanju Sir & I all took turns & cooked food & had it on the sets. This is where cooking struck to me as an unexpected hobby. Over the years, it grew into a passion. In times of stress, I would take up cooking and it ended up being really therapeutic. I also host “Cook Up Nights” with a few friends over & make them have new recipes from time to time. At one of these food nights, an old college friend of my wife – Ritesh Patel, who has dabbled in a few hospitality ventures inquired if I was interested in transiting this passion professionally & I jumped up at the thought and the idea of a Take Away Restaurant took shape. It’s named Big Bang Cuurry & it’s going to be an Order in / Take Away Restaurant to start with, which will operate from evenings into the wee hours. It will be serving Indian Cuisine,” he says. Celebrities who are supporting his venture on social media include Ekta Kapoor, Anita Hassanandani, Shabir Ahluwalia, Kanchi Singh, Gaurav Gera, Mona Singh, Rai Laxmi, Arjun Bijlani, Rithvik Dhanjani, Jay Bhanushali, Mahhi Vij, Kashmera Shah, Karan Patel, Pooja Gor et al.

Says the 2 time National award winner, “It’s a great time to be in films as so many good scripts are being written. It’s quite common in smaller towns, but in cities, people worry ki log kya kahenge, more so when your older son is of marriageable age, maybe even has a child of his own. This awkwardness is the fun part of the story”. Adding that, “I need good scripts. This one came out of the blue. Badhaai Ho is my comeback film in the real sense. I did a couple of movies years ago, then, got busy with TV. I hope this will open up more avenues for actors of my age”. Shahid Kapoor To Play Boxing Hero Dingko Singh On Screen

Shahid Kapoor is all set to portray former boxing champ & Asian Games gold medallist Dingko Singh on screen. The film will be directed by Raja Krishna Menon and is expected to go on the floors sometime around Apr, 2019. Dingko Singh has been an inspiration to many boxers who came into the ring after him, and went on to become a coach for young boxers. Shahid says, “He is one of those superstars who we don’t know much about. If a film like Dangal (2016) wasn’t made, we wouldn’t know as much about the Phogat sisters. Dingko Singh is a cancer survivor, and he went through 13 rounds of chemotherapy. His biggest win was surviving cancer & not the gold medal he won at the age of 19 at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok. In the year 2017, Gautam Gambhir became aware of his situation and sent money for his treatment. Soon, people found out who he was, and 13 doctors came forward to help him. He is a sports star who survived cancer. At some point in his past, he had almost become a Naxalite. Such amazing stories of heroes need to be told.”
