Somnath Chatterjee: A die-hard Marxist forsaken by his party

August 13, 2018 by Nasheman

For long the voice of Opposition, Somnath Chatterjee was the first Communist Speaker of the Lok Sabha and one who defied his party and refused to quit the post over the Indo-US nuclear deal in 2008, leading to his expulsion from the CPI-M.

From championing the cause of the downtrodden as one of India’s finest parliamentarians and barristers and settling effortlessly into the role of wooing investors to industry-dry West Bengal, Chatterjee donned many a hat with ease and aplomb during a four-decade public career.

The tall, heavily built man with a majestic personality evoked awe at first sight. But beneath that stern exterior lay a tender heart that cared for the poor.

His aggressiveness, baritone, legal acumen and sharp debating skills were big assets not only for the CPI-M but for the opposition benches as a whole in pinning down the government during his three decades in the Lok Sabha. But beyond that Chatterjee always came out as an affable person, gentle in his manners and rising above petty politics.

Perhaps it was this quality that stood Chatterjee in good stead in stewarding the Lok Sabha as Speaker from 2004 to 2009. Excepting Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, who once hurled papers and her shawl towards the Speaker’s podium, no other MP ever accused Chatterjee of being partisan in conducting the House proceedings.

The rivalry between the two went a long way back. It was by upsetting the CPI-M stalwart in the 1984 general elections from Jadavpur that Banerjee – then a youth Congress leader virtually unknown in state politics – cut her teeth in politics. That was Chatterjee’s only electoral defeat and the beginning of Banerjee’s ascendancy.

However, Banerjee too mellowed and in 2012, a year after taking over as West Bengal Chief Minister, she had proposed his name along with those of Manmohan Singh and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam as her choice for President.

Chatterjee was perhaps the right disciple of his mentor and the late Communist patriarch Jyoti Basu, who shared a similar high-society upbringing and educational qualifications.

Through his political life and even after he was expelled from the CPI-M in 2008, Chatterjee remained close to Basu who had a great liking for Chatterjee. So much so, that as West Bengal Chief Minister, he coaxed and cajoled Chatterjee to take over as chairman of the West Bengal Industrial Development Corp (WBIDC) to woo investors.

Chatterjee put his heart and soul into the job, met industrialists and toured various countries, inking MoUs worth thousands of crores of rupees, though it was another thing that very few of the pacts matured into industrial projects on the ground. The opposition in Bengal lost no opportunity to make fun of Chatterjee, jokingly calling him “MoU da”.

Another interesting contradiction lay in Chatterjee’s family ties. Though he remained a Marxist all his life, his father Nirmal Chandra Chatterjee was a Hindu revivalist and one of the founders and one-time president of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha.

Parliamentarians from the BJP had at times made mocking reference to the “Marxist Chatterjee” by highlighting this aspect.

Born on July 25, 1929 in Tezpur in Assam, Chatterjee studied at the Mitra Institution School, Presidency College and the University of Calcutta.

He then proceeded to England to earn B.A and M.A degrees in Law from the Jesus College, Cambridge. He was called to the Bar from London’s Middle Temple and started legal practice as an advocate at the Calcutta High Court.

Chatterjee joined the CPI-M in 1968. He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1971 from Burdwan in a by-election as an independent candidate backed by the CPI-M. The seat had fallen vacant after the death of his father Nirmal Chatterjee.

He made it to the Lok Sabha on CPI-M ticket from Jadavpur in 1977 and 1980 and from Bolpur in 1985, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004. From 1989 till 2004, he served as the Leader of the CPI-M in the Lok Sabha.

Chattterjee rose to become a central committee member of the party but was expelled on July 23, 2008 “for seriously compromising the position of the party”.

Chatterjee had then contended that the office of the Speaker was above party affiliations and he ceased to be a CPI-M member once he took over the job.

In an interview to IANS, Chatterjee had called his expulsion the “saddest day of my life,… I was sad then, I am sad now also. It is not like weather that it will change”.

West Bengal CPI-M leaders, however, constantly kept in touch with him, and even sent feelers that if he applied again admitting his mistake, he would be readmitted. But the principled man, steadfastly refused, while making it clear, that he would be game if the party on its own took him back.

But that was not to be. And to the last day, Chatterjee remained party less, while nursing a void deep in his heart.

Congress, JD (S) leaders show outrage on BJP for shifting Aero India Show

August 13, 2018 by Nasheman

The news of shifting of the Aero India Show, the aviation exhibition, that was being held in Bengaluru since the last two decades, to Lucknow has caused severe criticism and outrage in the state of Karnataka. Congress and JD (S) leaders have accused BJP that this was done keeping in mind the upcoming Lok Sabha elections to appease the people of Uttar Pradesh.

“If the Aero India Show is shifted indeed to Lucknow, it will be a great humiliation done to the Kannadigas by defense minister Nirmala Sitharaman,” said deputy chief minister (DCM) Dr. G Parameshwar. He was speaking after partaking in a programme that was organized at the Ravindra Kalakshetra in the city on Sunday, August 12.

Parameshwar further complained that “The state government does not have any concrete information about the shifting of the show from Bengaluru to Lucknow. In case if this is true, it will be a huge insult to the Kannadigas by the defense minister who got elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka itself,”

“The aviation exhibition is being held since the last 22 years in the city of Bengaluru and it is a matter of pride and honor to the country and state. Earlier governments of the state also have extended their best co-operation for this event. The present government is also giving full support for this event. Then why this event is being shifted? There is no infrastructure here?” he questioned.

“If the event is shifted, then there will be a severe condemnation of the same,” he warned.

When Parameshwar has questioned whether this move is political, he replied by saying that if the news of shifting is true, then we must understand that there is no other reason but political.

H D Kumaraswamy, chief minister of the state, accused BJP and said, “The Aero India Show is being organized in Bengaluru since 1996. However, the move of shifting this to Lucknow this year is not right. The central government has taken this decision with the Lok Sabha elections in mind. Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of Lok Sabha seats in the country. Because of this, the central government is shifting this event to Lucknow. Thereby it is doing injustice to the state of Karnataka. This is not right. Bengaluru city has got the entire basic infrastructure necessary for the show. However, so far I have not received any official communication from the center in this regard,”

D K Shivakumar, irrigation minister, urged that the state BJP leaders have to take a delegation to center and put pressure on the Prime Minister to hold the Aero India Show in Bengaluru itself.

“The decision of the central government of shifting the Aero India show to Lucknow is not correct. Chief minister Kumaraswamy has already met the defense minister and appealed her not to shift the show. State BJP leaders like Yeddyurappa, Sadananda Gowda, Ananth Kumar, Jagadish Shettar and union ministers of Karnataka state should question the injustice that is meted out to the state of Karnataka by the central government. The state government is once again going to urge the central government to retain this show in the city itself,” said, D K Shivakumar.

Siddaramaiah, former chief minister of the state expressed his unhappiness on the issue on Twitter and said, “Due to the stance of the BJP, defense deals are being taken away from the state one by one. It is not right to shift the air show even when the necessary infrastructure is available in the city. The bitter news of shifting the air show from the city is like rubbing salt over the wound of Rafael deal which was snatched from HAL,”

Pakistan releases 30 Indian prisoners ahead of Independence Day

August 13, 2018 by Nasheman

Pakistan today released 30 Indian prisoners, including 27 fishermen, from jail as a goodwill gesture ahead of the country’s Independence Day tomorrow.

The release of the prisoners “is in line with Pakistan’s consistent policy of not politicising humanitarian issues,” Foreign Office Spokesperson Mohammad Faisal said in a statement.

“This is a humanitarian gesture to mark Pakistan’s Independence day on August 14,” he said.

“It is our hope that the Indian side will also reciprocate in a similar manner,” he added.

Over 470 Indians, including 418 fishermen, are detained in Pakistani jails, according to a government report submitted before the country’s Supreme Court in July.

Yesterday, it was reported that the fishermen had been arrested by the authorities for allegedly trespassing into Pakistan’s territorial waters.

They were shifted to Cantt Railway Station from Karachi’s Malir jail and will be taken to Lahore. The fishermen will be handed over to Indian border officials at Wagah border.

Pakistan and India frequently arrest fishermen as there is no clear demarcation of the maritime border in the Arabian Sea and these fishermen do not have boats equipped with the technology to know their precise location.

Owing to lengthy and slow bureaucratic and legal procedures, the fishermen usually remain in jail for several months but they also periodically set them free as a goodwill gesture.

A number of non-governmental organizations in both India and Pakistan have raised the issue, pressing their governments to release the arrested fishermen without delay.

Somnath’s body to be donated to hospital

August 13, 2018 by Nasheman

First, his body would be taken to the Calcutta High Court, with which he was associated for a long time. “Then it will be taken to the State Assembly where we will give him the gun salute, the highest honour of the state,” Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said.

“Later his body will be taken to his residence and then to the SSKM hospital,” she said.

Chatterjee had pledged to donate his body to the medical college in 2002.

August 10, 2018 by Nasheman

The DMK on Friday demanded the nation’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, for party patriarch M. Karunanidhi who passed away in Chennai on August 7.

The party said the award will be a real tribute to the late Tamil Nadu leader’s outstanding and exemplary work which had left an indelible mark in history.

Karunanidhi, who led the DMK for five decades, was the Chief Minister for 19 years spread over five terms.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, DMK’s Tiruchi Shiva dubbed Karunanidhi the “tallest leader of the country and a Dravidian stalwart”.

“He lived five years short of a century, out of which he contributed 80 years to the public life, fighting for the cause of the downtrodden, backward and the suppressed people.

“He was an outstanding orator, a prolific writer, a novelist, a short-story writer, a philosopher, a philanthropist and also a dramatist. He was an actor and also wrote scripts for 80 movies,” Shiva said enumerating the achievements of Karunanidhi.

He said that Karunanidhi was “unparalleled” and made a mark in all walks of life.

“His life cannot be described in words. He was a staunch and untiring soldier. He was fighting till his last breath, for social justice, secularism, state autonomy and self-respect.

“I would urge the government to confer upon him posthumously the Bharat Ratna, which will be a real tribute to his outstanding and exemplary work which had left an indelible mark in the annals of history,” the DMK lawmaker said.

Mulk

By: Husna Rizwan & Shaheen Raaj

Mulk Is A Well – Made Movie – A Must Watch For Every Indian

Banner: Soham Rockstar Entertainment & Benaras Media Works
Producer: Deepak Mukut & Anubhav Sinha
Director: Anubhav Sinha
Star Cast: Rishi Kapoor, Tapsee Pannu, Ashotosh Rana, Pateik Smit Babbar, Rajat Kapoor, Manoj Pahwa, Neena Gupta, Prachi Shah – Pandya, Vartika Singh, Indraneil Sen Gupta, Ashrut Jain Kumud Mishra, Sumit Kaul Atul Tiwari, Anil Rastogi, Vinay Ghoshal, Ehsaan Khan, Ehsannur Rehman Khan, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Udayveer Singh Yadav, Manoj Dutt, Paromita Chatterjee & Abdul Quadir
Music: Prasad Sashta & Mangesh Dhakda

Soham Rockstar Entertainment & Benaras Mediaworks’ Mulk also produced & directed by Anubhav Sinha is the story of a Muslim family living in Lucknow and, through that family, the story of how prejudices can make life hell for Muslims in India is showcased.

The scripted scenario of Mulk opens with Murad Ali Mohammed (Rishi Kapoor), a respected lawyer who lives in Lucknow with his wife, Tabassum (Neena Gupta), younger brother, Bilal Mohammed (Manoj Pahwa), sister – in – law, ‘Chhoti’ Tabassum (Prachee Shah – Paandya), nephew, Shahid Mohammed (Prateik Smit Babbar) & niece, Aayat Mohammed (Vartika Singh). Murad Ali Mohammed’s son, Aftab Mohammed (Indraneil Sengupta) & his Hindu lawyer – wife, Aarti Mohammed (Taapsee Pannu), lives abroad. Aarti Mohammed has now come visiting the family, deciding to stay away from her husband Aftab Mohammed, who wants their child, as yet unborn and not even conceived, to follow the religion of Islam, something which the progressive Aarti Mohammed feels, does not even merit discussion. The level-headed Aarti Mohammed continues to give her in-laws the same respect & love despite the tension with her husband. Ditto for the in-laws. And then to the shock of the entire family, Shahid Mohammed is named as one amongst the 3 terrorists who’ve caused bomb blasts in Allahabad, resulting in deaths of innocent people. Nobody in the family even had the inkling that Shahid Mohammed had, right under their nose, become a jihadi, having been initiated into terrorism by Mehfooz Alam (Sumit Kaul). Anti-terrorist squad inspector Danish Javed (Rajat Kapoor) shoots Shahid Mohammed on sight and the dead body is brought to Lucknow. Shahid Mohammed’s respectable family is so distraught at the thought that one amongst them had become a terrorist that it refuses to accept the corpse. Soon enough, Shahid Mohammed’s father, Bilal Mohammed (Manoj Pahwa), is taken by the police for interrogation. After a grueling session of questioning, the police arrest him. In court, the public prosecutor Santosh Anand (Ashutosh Rana) tries to prove that Bilal Mohammed was aware of his son Shahid Mohammed’s terrorist activities and was himself involved in them. Murad Ali Mohammed defends his brother Bilal Mohammed in court but before he knows it, he too is accused by the public prosecutor of terrorism. Shaken & dejected at the prejudice against Muslims, the old Murad Ali Mohammed asks his daughter – in – law Aarti Mohammed to become Bilal Mohammed’s lawyer in court.
Anubhav Sinha has written a nice & thought-provoking story about a Muslim family which is looked down upon as a family of terrorists because of one black sheep in the family. While being relevant & topical, the story also tackles the larger issue of prejudice against members of the minority community in India. His screenplay is very engaging in the 1st ever half. The 2nd half is mostly devoted to the courtroom drama. In the courtroom drama, while trying to extrapolate the story of the Mohammed family to the story of Muslims in India in general, Anubhav Sinha does lose his grip in parts but he gets in control in the climax again. Had the courtroom drama far more fire & many claptrap moments, the impact would’ve been greater. In trying to take the macro view, the screenplay somewhere is unable to do justice to the pain & the sufferings of the Mohammed family. Nevertheless, the drama does keep the viewers engaged. However, it would appeal mainly to the class audience because it becomes a drama of a macro issue after some time. Had Anubhav Sinha not left his grip on the state of the Mohammed family & milked the emotions in that space, the film would have become a fare for the masses & family audiences too. Also, the courtroom drama looks a bit simplistic and often one-sided, when public prosecutor Santosh Anand argues, it’s just his viewpoint and, likewise, when Aarti Mohammed argues, it’s just her version. The audience would’ve enjoyed the courtroom drama far more had there been at least 7 to 10 clap worthy scenes of one-upmanship in the court arguments. The judgment pronounced by the judge (Kumud Mishra) is superbly worded, entertaining, yet so weighty. Anubhav Sinha’s dialogues are excellent.
Anubhav Sinha’s direction is good. He has handled the subject with sensitivity. Prasad Sashta & Anurag Saikia’s music & Shakeel Azmi’s lyrics are appealing. Mangesh Dhakde’s background music is very impactful. Ewan Mulligan’s cinematography captures the sombre mood of the drama with elan. Nikhil Kovale’s sets are realistic. Riyaz – Habib’s action & stunt scenes are good, but Ballu Saluja’s editing is certainly not up to to the mark sharp. The editing could have been crisper to keep the viewers engaged.
Performance wise Rishi Kapoor is extraordinaire, as always. He lives the character of Murad Ali Mohammed who feels so helpless & marginalized because of his religion. His nuanced performance is worthy of high praise. Taapsee Pannu delivers a mature act and superbly understated performance as Aarti Mohammed. Ashutosh Rana is splendid as a public prosecutor Santosh Anand. His antics in the court are enjoyable. Rajat Kapoor delivers a decent performance as Danish Javed. Kumud Mishra is absolutely delightful as the judge. Manoj Pahwa delivers a fantastic performance as Bilal. His scene in the jail with his elder brother Murad Ali Mohammed will make the weak – hearted cry. Prateik Smit Babbar is good as Shahid Mohammed. Neena Gupta shines in the role of Murad Ali Mohammed’s wife, Tabassum. Prachee Shah Paandya is effective as Bilal Mohammed’s wife, ‘Chhoti’ Tabassum. Vartika Singh makes her presence felt in the role of Aayat. Sumit Kaul leaves a mark as Mehfooz Alam. Ashrut Jain is good as Rashid. Indraneil Sengupta is alright in a “brief” role as Aftab Mohammed. Atul Tiwari, as Murad Ali Mohammed’s close Hindu friend, is very effective. Anil Rastogi, Vinay Ghoshal, Ehsaan Khan, Ehsannur Rehman Khan, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Udayveer Singh Yadav, Manoj Dutt, Paromita Chatterjee and the rest lend good support.
Tail Piece: On the whole, Mulk is a purposeful entertainer and has the potential to do fair business but its dull start & the dual oppositions of Fanney Khan & Karwaan this week will tell on its business. The critical acclaim it wins will be far more rewarding than the box – office turnstiles revenues.

At the box – office turnstiles collections should definitely pick up by positive word of mouth publicity.

Karwaan

Karwaan Is A Decent Film With Memorable Performances By Irrfan Khan & Dulquer Salmaan

Banner: RSVP Movies & Ishka Films
Producer: Prithi Rathi Gupta & Ronnie Screwala
Director: Akarsh Khurana
Star Cast: Dulquer Salmaan, Mithila Parkar & Irrfan Khan along with Kriti Kharbanda, Amala Akkineni, Akash Khurana, Donna Munshi, Beena, Nambiar & Habib Azmi
Music: Prateek Khuhad, Anurag Saikia, Slow Cheetah & Imaad Shah

Road trip films have their own charm and some of the most memorable films in the West belong to this genre. Even Bollywood has excelled in this genre with films like Piku in the year 2015, Qarib Qarib Singlle in the year 2017, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara in the year 2011, Highway in the year 2014, Jab We Met in the year 2007, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in the year 2013 et al. Irrfan Khan, surprisingly, has appeared in 2 such films in recent times, namely, Piku & Qarib Qarib Singlle. And now he’s all set to complete his travel trilogy with Karwaan, which is also the Bollywood debut of the Malyalam actor & star Dulquer Salmaan and the 1st ever leading role for the most talked about internet sensation & Marathi actor Mithila Palkar.

The scripted scenario of Karwaan showcases the story of 3 diametrically opposite individuals on a journey together. Avinash Rajpurohit (Dulquer Salmaan) works in an IT company in Bengaluru and is frustrated with his job. One day he gets a call that his father Prakash Rajpurohit (Akash Khurana) has left for his heavenly abode in a bus accident while he was on his way to Gangotri. The travel company arranges for his father’s mortal remains to be sent to Avinash in Bengaluru. Avinash had a troubled relationship with his father as the latter compelled him to give up his dreams of becoming a photographer. As a result, he’s not quite affected with his demise. Avinash asks his friend Shaukat (Irrfan Khan), who runs a garage, to provide him with a van so that he can carry the mortal remains from the airport to the crematorium. Avinash picks up the body and reaches the crematorium, where he realizes that he is given the mortal remains of a woman (Beena). The woman turns out to be a victim who also died in the same bus accident and her family resides in Kochi, who in a terrible mix up, were provided with Prakash’s mortal remains. Avinash hence decides to take advantage of the long weekend and take the woman’s mortal remains to Kochi and exchange it with his father’s. Shaukat also joins in. On the way, the dead woman’s daughter Tahira (Amala Akkineni) makes an SOS call to Avinash and requests him if he can pick up her daughter Tanya (Mithila Palkar) who studies in Ooty and is incommunicado. Shaukat has reservations with this idea but Avinash doesn’t listen. He reaches Ooty, picks up Tanya and then they head to Kochi. Unknown to them, a group of small – time goons are also following the trio. What happens next forms the rest of the crux of the film.

Bejoy Nambiar’s story is promising and could have made for a great script. But Akarsh Khurana & Adhir Bhat’s screenplay fails to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. The film moves at a snail’s pace and many developments don’t happen organically. Also, the entire track of Avinash’s father forcing him to give up photography is something that’s been done to death in our films, most notable & recent example being Tamasha in the year 2015. Hussain Dalal’s dialogues are funny & witty, yet worded simply. The ones mouthed by Irrfan Khan stand out.

Akarsh Khurana’s direction is weak and he also lets go of the opportunity of turning a somewhat flawed script into a good film with his execution. One doesn’t feel much for the characters due to the way the narrative pans out. Except for the part where Shaukat speaks about his father, no other scene moves the viewers, not even the monologue of Tahira & Avinash. Also, the predictability sets in since one knows that the road trip films usually ends with the characters getting transformed ultimately. Hence, despite the scene of Avinash in the end with his boss being a good one, it doesn’t make the desired impact as the audiences already see it coming.

Karwaan begins well and the frustration of being a part of a profession that doesn’t suit Avinash is well depicted in the initial scenes. One expects things to get better once the road trip begins. And it does get better but not to a great extent. The film drags & a lot of humor & situations seems forced. The character of Tanya is half – baked & the writers should have etched this part in a better way. The intermission point is funny & again, the hopes rise for a better 2nd half. Alas, that doesn’t happen and the film remains flat in the last hour as well. Even the climax lacks a solid punch. In fact, the Indian audiences might have a strong reservations in the manner in which Tahira & Tanya organize a feast, play cricket & make merry as if nothing untoward has happened in their lives, just hours after the funeral. On the positive side, the film has some funny moments that succeed in raising the laughs. The best part in this regard is the track of the shehnai wallah (Habib Azmi). It’s sure to bring the house down!

Music goes well with the narrative but isn’t something that would have a long shelf life. “Chota Sa Fasana” is the best of the lot and is like a theme of the film. “Heartquake” comes next and works due to its quirky lyrics & situation. “Sansein” is also fair and the rest are forgettable. Anurag Saikia’s background score is good but could have been a bit more subtle. Avinash Arun’s cinematography is breathtaking & captures the locales so well that one feels that one is actually a part of the “Karwaan”. The lensman had earlier shown his magic in Masaan in the year 2015 & Drishyam in the year 2015 & also directed the acclaimed Marathi film Killa in the year 2015 and he ensures that he keeps his credibility intact. Tiya Tejpal’s production design is passable. 3 locales, the house of Rumana, Tahira & Nambiars, all seemed to be shot at one locale. Ajay Sharma’s editing is too slow and could have been slick. Also, the manner in which the flashback of Prakash Rajpurohit would suddenly pop up seemed unconvincing. Jaya Taurani’s costumes are fine.

Performance wise Irrfan Khan delivers a very decent performance & also contributes to the laughter quotient, but only at places. Almost all his dialogues are worded to create an effect & the endeavor fails. Compare this with Irrfan’s previous travel films, Qarib Qarib Singlle & Piku, where the humor flowed organically. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen here. But he surely dominates the film and gives the most memorable performance out of all actors. Dulquer Salmaan makes a really confident debut. He understands his part well and one must watch out how he carefully ensures that he doesn’t go overboard. This aspect would surely be loved by the Hindi audiences. Mithila Palkar is strictly average. Her character lacked depth and even performance wise; she could have brought out varied shades which would have enhanced the impact. Alas, her performance looks a bit monotonous. Amala Akkineni, south actor Nagaarjuna’s wife and former Bollywood actress, is genuine. Akash Khurana is good as the autocratic father. Kriti Kharbanda as Rumana is quite lovely in the special appearance, but again, her track fails to add much to the film. Donna Munshi as Tasneem has a striking face and does very well. Habib Azmi gives a fine performance, as a shehnai wallah. Beena is alright. The actors playing the cargo office staffer, Avinash’s boss, Rumana’s husband, new employee at Avinash’s office & Nambiar are very good.

Tail Piece: On the whole, Karwaan is a good opportunity gone waste. Irrfan Khan is the biggest draw of this film but the audiences might be dejected to not see him in his full glory.

At the Box – Office turnstiles, the film is going to struggle a lot to stay afloat. Period!
