Movie Review: ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ is a heart wrenching emotional saga

February 6, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

sanam_teri_kasam

Producer: Deepak Mukut
Directors: Radhika Rao & Vinay Sapru
Star Cast: Harshavardhan Rane, Mawra Hocane, Anurag Sinha, Manish Chaudhari, Murli Sharma, Vijay Raaz, Sudesh Berry, Pyumori Mehta, Divyetta Singh etc

It’s time for the dabangg director Jodi of Radhika Rao & Vinay Sapru to add one more emotion packed directorial feather to their illustrious directorial cap with an emotion packed film like Sanam Teri Kasam, which really pulls at your heartstrings.

Saraswati (débutante Pakistani Actress Mowra Hocane) is not so good looking South Indian girl and to top it she is rejected by many suitors while her stern father is worried that his younger daughter may also remain unmarried. Inder (debutante actor Harshvardhan Rane) is a lawyer who has his own demons to fight with. The duo meet under intriguing circumstances and keep falling in & out of love according to their own whims & fancies and then they are en route to one more tragedy that befalls them soon enough.

Radhika Rao & Vinay Sapru have succeeded in extracting fine performances from Pakistani actress Mowra Hocane & South Indian actor Harshavardhan Rane apart from a few supporting actors like another débutante Anurag Sinha. Another good thing about the film is its soul stirring music by Himesh Reshamiya.

The film lacks conviction in parts with the same cancer melodrama served like an old wine in a new bottle, albeit well packaged & well presented by the director duo Radhika Rao & Vinay Sapru.

Sanam Teri Kasam is no doubt a critic’s delight but will hardly prove to be the so called entertainment craving audience’s cup of tea.

Movie Review: ‘Saala Khadoos’ is a power packed sports movie

January 30, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

saala-khadoos

Producer: R. Madhavan and Rajkumar Hirani
Director: Sudha Kongara Prasad
Star Cast: R. Madhavan, Ritika Singh, Mumtaz Sorcar, Nasser, Radha Ravi, Zakir Hussein, Kaali Venkat, Baljinder Kaur and Sanjana Mohan

Debutante director Sudha Kongara Prasad makes a very impact debut in Bollywood with Saala Khadoos. The movie also has its Tamil version known as Irudu Suttu.

The plotted scenario of the movie starts off with the introduction of Adi Tomar aka Adi (R. Madhavan), who, by profession, happens to be a coach of the girls’ boxing team. Courtesy the dirty politics (wherein he is falsely accused of sexual harassment), he gets transferred to Chennai. Adi is now on a lookout for a girl who has the much required passion for the sport and fire in her belly. And his search ends in the most unlikely person for the job Madhi (Ritika Singh), who, despite being a fisherwoman by profession, is a born talent in boxing and she idolises Mohammad Ali.

Aces: The rock solid par excellence performance of R. Madhan as a boxing coach and of course the gutsy performance of debutante Ritika Singh as an aspiring boxer and finally emerging as a winner – a world champion in the boxing arena. The chemistry between R. Madhavan and Ritika Singh deserves a noteworthy mention. The other actors too lend them an adequate support. And last but not the least debutante director (in Bollywood) Sudha Kongara Prasad is just excellent and too good to be true.

Minuses: Some of the predictable stock characters and situations arising out of dirty politics being played out, time and again, in the sports arena.

Last Word: Saala Khadoos is by far the best sports film so far since Chak De! India, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Mary Com, Brothers et al. A certainly not to be missed fare.

Movie Review: ‘Mastizaade’ is the most boringly dragging film of this decade

January 30, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Mastizaade

Producer: Pritish Nandy & Rangita Nandy
Director: Milap Zaveri
Star Cast: Sunny Leone, Tushar Kapoor, Vir Das, Suresh Menon, Sushmita Mukherji, Shaad Randhawa, Vivek Waswani & Ritesh Deshmukh

One can only say that no doubt Milap Zaveri is a good writer but as a director of Mastizaade, the 2nd Adult Porn Rom Com in quick succession after the latest franchise of Kya Kool Hain Hum, he is a big let down nay a total disappointment.

And as per the director Milap Javeri, the most painstakingly scripted scenario of Mastizaade kicks off with the introduction of Riteish Deshmukh, a self-confessed ‘mastizaada’. Seeing his antics and his magnetism towards the opposite sex, makes the two self-confessed sex maniacs Aditya Chotiya (Vir Das) and Sunny Kele (Tusshar Kapoor) to become his disciples. While Aditya and Sunny get thrown out of an ad agency owned by Vivek Vaswani because of their extremely sexual content in all their ads, they land up starting their own ad agency named ‘XXX’.

It does provide a few droplets of humour and laughter quotient. But the double entendre dialogues topped with obscene gestures have just crossed all limits of decency.

Last Word: Kya Kool Hain Hum 3 the 1st ever adult porn rom-com was far better compared to Mastizaade. So guys & gals and of course everyone else too stay miles away even from the vicinity of a theatre screening Mastizaade.

While Randeep Hooda has already shot his 1st scene as Sarbjit, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also started with the shooting recently. In order to portray the realistic character of Dalbir Kaur, Aishwarya has chosen a de – glam look with no makeup & simple dressing.

Movie Review: ‘Jugni’ mixes romance & music in a perfect blend

January 23, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

jugni

Producer: Karan Grover, Manas Malhotra & Shefali Bhushan
Director: Shefali Bhushan
Star Cast: Siddhanth Behl, Sugandha Garg, Sadhana Singh, Anuitta K Jha, Samir Sharma, Chandan Gill etc
Genre: Musical Romance
Verdict: GOOD

Director Shefali Bhushan in her debut directorial offering Jugni has made a very heart touching film about the professional plight of the rural folk singers who always dream of making it big in tinsel town.

Jugni (Firefly) is the beat of the soul, the free-flying spirit. Jugni is Vibhavari or Vibs (Sugandha Garg). Vibs is a music director, working on her 1st big break in the Hindi film industry. When work and home affairs, with her live-in boyfriend Sid (Samir Sharma) hit a high tide, Vibs hits the road with a glint of hope; to find music. The journey takes her to a village in Punjab in search of a Bibi Saroop (Sadhana Singh), whose voice holds the promise that Vibs is searching for. But as the twist of fate would have it, Mastana (Siddhant Behl), Bibi’s son and a proficient singer himself, is the voice and man who winds his way into Vibs’ heart.

Aces: The remarkable performance of the lead players Siddhanth Behl as Mastana and Sugandha garg as Vibhavari followed by Sadhana Singh as Bibi Saroop. Another highlight of Jugni is its soundtrack by Clinton Cerejo and one special soul stirring number composed by Allah Rakha Rahman.

Minuses: The only minus point of the film Jugni is its totally predictable story line marred by sub plots which has no connection whatsoever with the musical backdrop.

Last Word: Jugni has its own freshness in all aspects and respects and will appeal to both the urban (multiplex) & rural (single screen) audiences. An ideal weekend fare.

Movie Review: ‘Guru’ is a power packed film a real treat for lovers of action films

January 23, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

guru

Producers: Sunil Lulla and Deepak Pandurang Rane
Director: Sanjay Jadhav
Star Cast: Ankush Chaudhary, Urmila Kanetkar, Murali Sharma etc
Genre: Action
Verdict: Good

Director Sanjay Jadhav in collaboration with his hero Ankush Chaudhary has given a hat trick of successful movies in the past but in Guru he has taken refuge in the Southern style of power packed action movies.

Plot: Guru (Ankush Chaudhary) is a small – time crook who adopts a village and defends it against a criminal mastermind troubling its residents.
Guru is your basic Robin Hood, who takes from the crooked and gives to the charity. On the run from his friendly neighborhood policeman, he is witness to a murder. Guru returns to his village to get away from the scandal, but the scandal follows him. The murder he witnessed is part of a larger conspiracy, which threatens to endanger him, as well as his loved ones. With his brother seriously injured & his newfound sweetheart (Urmila Kanitkar) in considerable danger, the stage is all set for Guru to take things in his own hands.

Aces: Ankush Chaudhary has given a good account of himself over all but his comic timing and his chemistry with Urmila Kanetkar is seen to be believed. Urmila Kanetkar also leaves an impact with her good screen presence. While Hindi actor Murali Sharma hams away to glory.

Minuses: Too much of mind-boggling action topped with the wreckage of cars a la Rohit Shetty style.

Last Word: Marathi audiences will love this action packed movie with a stamped Southern style of filmmaking.

Movie Review: ‘Kya Kool Hain Hum 3’ is an adult porn rom com that has gone for a toss

January 23, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3

Producers: Ekta Kapoor & Shobha Kapoor
Director: Umesh Ghadge
Star Cast: Tusshar Kapoor, Aftab Shivdasani, Krushna Abhishek, Mandana Karimi, Gizele Thakral, Claudia Ciesla, Shakti Kapoor, Meghana Naidu, Sushmita Mukherji, Andrew & Danny Suma
Genre: Adult Sex Comedy
Verdict: AVERAGE

Umesh Ghadge who is basically a Marathi director who now makes his debut in the Hindi film arena with Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 albeit with disastrous result. He has made a total mess of this Kya Kool Hain
Hum franchise in fact even worse than its earlier 2 versions.

Plot: Kanhaiyya (Tusshar Kapoor) is a good – for -nothing fellow who gets kicked out of his house by his business tycoon father (who else, but Shakti Kapoor). Meghna Naidu (the Kaliyon Ka Chaman babe at her horniest best) is Tusshar’s aunt & stepmother. Rocky (Aftab Shivdasani) is his ‘chuddy – buddy’ friendly mate, literally (found frolicking with babes more often than not in his 3 tiered palatial mansion with unclad beauties on every floor). Very soon, Kanhaiyya’s grandmother catches Rocky getting his rockers off to pornography – a development that kills her, quite literally. This prompts them to meet their Thailand – based friend Mickey (Krushna), who would rather refer to his place of residence as ‘Thai – land’.

But Mickey forgets to tell Rocky & Kanhaiyya that he is a porn filmmaker. So now the out of job boys become shameless porn stars. No doubt Kanhaiyya starts feeling guilty yet he continues enjoying what he is doing and turns Cock – eyed whenever he sees anything resembling Color Red especially in case of vulgarly gyrating semi nude babes.

Aces: Some humorous gags which may appeal to the mass audiences of multiplex & single theatres (front benchers).

Minuses: Everything goes haywire with the film from scene one like bad script, bad direction, bad gags topped with poorest performances by all the actors. Girls can be seen in their Bikini best, and even especially & carelessly leaving their bras strewn around anywhere nay everywhere and even guys are seen sporting their flimsiest & semi transparent G Strings leaving nothing to imagination. And the lewd & obscene gestures made by all the characters have crossed all limits in this film. Wonder what happened to Censor Board’s stringent policies or this time have they turned liberal with a vengeance as a cover up for their greasy palms?

Last Word: The film may prove to be enjoyable, for people who really relish such horny & blatantly sexy fares. And the audiences for such films comprises of select few ones known as front benchers of the single theatre’s who are now also found amongst the multiplex crowds. Need I say more.

Movie Review: ‘Airlift’ is a heart warming & a heart touching emotional saga

January 23, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Airlift

Producer: Nikhil Advani, Monisha Advani, Aruna Bhatia, Madhu G Bhojwani, Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar & Vikram Malhotra
Director: Raja Krishna Menon
Star Cast: Akshay Kumar, Nimrat Kaur, Feryna Wazheir, Inamulhaq, Lena, Prakash Belwadi, Kumud Mishra & Purab Kohli
Genre: War Thriller
Verdict: BLOCKBUSTER

Director Raja Krishna Menon has dabbled with humane stories in his 1st 2 outings namely Bus Yun Hi & Barah Anna and yet he had the guts to continue with his endeavor of emotional saga in his hat trick outing Airlift too. Besides producers Nikhil Advani, Monisha Advani, Aruna Bhatia, Madhu G Bhojwani, Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar & Vikram Malhotra deserve plaudits for backing this offbeat film.

Plot: a Kuwait based businessman Ranjeet Katyal (Akshay Kumar), along with 2 noble souls Ibrahim (Purab Kohli) in Kuwait & an Indian officer (Kumud Mishra) in the Indian Ministry in New Delhi in lieu with his better half (Nimrat Kaur), carries out a biggest civil operation of evacuation of Indians based in Kuwait during the Iraq – Kuwait war carried out during the reign of the evil Iraqi emperor Saddam Hussein. In 1990, Iraq invades Kuwait, leaving approx 1,70,000 Indians trapped. This is a true story of how Ranjit Katyal and India facilitate the largest human evacuation.

Aces: Firstly director Raja Krishnan Menon has surpassed his own par excellence directional skills considering his previous two offbeat ventures Bus Yun Hi & Barah Anna, secondly all the actors have delivered a very earnest, sincere, honest, enduring & realistic performance with Akshay Kumar (his life’s career best performance) leading the performer’s brigade and followed by Nimrat Kaur, Feryna Wazheir, Inamulhaq, Lena, Prakash Belwadi, Kumud Mishra & Purab Kohli (very sensitive act) and lastly all the technicians too deserves a special mention for their humanitarian efforts.

Minuses: The main problem is that for the common masses Airlift is devoid of any commercial trappings and even the only one belly dance number with a bevy of beautiful Iranian dancers seems out of place & out of context. Not to forget that the film moves ahead slowly with a few over repeated scenes.

Last Word: Airlift is one classy film well suited for the globe – trotting film festival circuit. And for its popularity amongst the Indian mass audiences it certainly needs a lot of encouragement.

Movie Review: ‘Wazir’ is one film that has gone terribly wrong in many aspects

January 21, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Wazir

Producer: Vidhu Vinod Chopra
Director: Bejoy Nambiar
Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Farhaan Akhtar, Aditi Rao Hydari, Naseer Hussain, Manav Kaul & Neil Nitin Mukesh
Music: Shantanu Moitra, Advaita, Ankit Tiwari, Prashant Pillai, Gaurav Godkhindi, Rochak Kohli & Rohit Kulkarni

Director David oops sorry Bejoy Nambiar had displayed his poor directional skills in his last outing too namely David, which had come and disappeared in oblivion as it tanked on the box office turnstiles without a trace and the same seems to be the case of his latest outing Wazir.

The plotted scenario of Wazir gets kick started with a ‘musical introduction’ of the dynamic ATS officer Danish Ali (Farhan Akhtar), his wife Ruhaana (Aditi Rao Hydari) and their only child Noorie. One day, when Danish Ali is out with his family, his razor sharp eyes spot a dreaded terrorist Rameez (Naseer Husain). What follows after that is a series of chase sequences, which results in the sudden death of the innocent Noorie. Completely shattered by the death of his child, a mentally disturbed Danish Ali ends up ‘eliminating’ Rameez, which results in him being suspended from his service. Unable to bear the grief, one day, just as he is about to kill himself, there enters a chess champion named Panditji aka Omkar Nath Dhar (Amitabh Bachchan) in his life. He, then, teaches Danish Ali, the ‘similarities’ between the ‘game of life’ and the ‘game of chess’. Gradually, the 2 become the best of buddies and start spending time over drinks & chess. One fine day, Panditji reveals to Danish Ali that his daughter was murdered by the politician Yazaad Qureshi (Manav Kaul) and that he is waiting to take revenge for the same. Danish Ali then also joins Panditji in his battle against Yazaad Qureshi. As days pass, Danish Ali realizes that Yazaad Qureshi is not just a mere politician, but is more than what meets the eye. Just when Danish Ali plans to eliminate Yazaad Qureshi, Panditji gets ‘attacked’ by a certain mysterious villain named “Wazir” (Neil Nitin Mukesh).

Director Bejoy Nambiar should learn one important directional lesson that just having extremely talented & par excellence gifted actors like Amitabh Bachchan & Farhaan Akhtar is not enough to make a good & perfect film. The overall ingredients like the script, the music and other techinal aspects should also match the actors caliber which goes a long way in the success run rate of the film. So Mr. Beejoy Nambiar should 1st brush up his technically oriented directional skills including taking some fresh lessons in his favorite genre of filmmaking namely The thriller & the suspense genre. And at this juncture apart from the actors a due credit is also due for the technicians like Rohit Kulkarni for his impactful & effective background score & Sanu Varghese for his decent & soothing cinematography.

Performance wise Amitabh Bachchan as Panditiji, as usual delivers an outstandingly par excellence performance as a handicapped person out to seek revenge in a Chess game style using Farhaan Akhtar as a perfect pawn on his revenge oriented Chess Board. And Big B’s hand in glove partner Farhaan Akhtar as Danish Ali is too good to be true and has ended up delivering a flawless performance in lieu with his perfect mannerisms & body language of a tough cop and without the 2 of the most versatile actors of B – Town, Wazir is not even worth a one time watch. The next in line actor is Neil Nitin Mukesh who is a big let down in the chief villainous role mysteriously named “Wazir”. And above all the list of mercilessly wasted actor also includes the hunky beefcake actor John Abraham & the gorgeous actress Aditi Rao Hydari followed by other talented actors like Manav Kaul & Naseer Hussain.

Tail Piece: Frankly speaking Wazir may only appeal to the intelligentsia crowd. But it is certainly not a common man’s cup of refreshing tea.

Movie Review: ‘Shashan’ is a clichéd fare

January 16, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

shasan

Producer: Shekhar Pathak

Genre: Drama
Verdict: AVERAGE

Director Gajendra Ahire is known more for his offbeat style of filmmaking and in his latest outing Shashan he has also succeeded in creating a casting coup of sorts. So Shashan happens to be a multi starer.

Plot: Based on the backdrop of a dying factory, the film revolves around the game of politics that is being played and how everyone involves gets entangled in this game. How an upcoming young union leader uses this situation to fulfil his ambition of becoming a political bigwig is showcased in Shashan.

Aces: All the seasoned actors have left a lasting impact on screen so what if most of them have ended up appearing in miniscule roles, including the most revered actor Dr. Shreeram Lagoo. But a special mention must be made of Makarand Anaspure, Bharat Jadhav, Jitendra Joshi, Manava Naik & Aditi Bhagwat for their effortless act. That apart hats off to a debutante non – Marathi producer like Shekhar Pathak for backing this expensively off beat film.

Minuses: The screenplay is all jumbled up with randomly disconnected shots topped with too many politically oriented sub plots.

Last Word: Fans of the above mentioned stars will patronise Shashan otherwise its chances at the box office turnstiles seems bleak with as many as 5 Marathi films releasing this week.
