Miscreants pelt stones at St. Joseph Vaz worship centre in Mangaluru

February 25, 2015 by Nasheman

St Joseph Vaz

Mangaluru: A day after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat accused Mother Theresa of converting people into Christianity in the pretext of service, miscreants have attacked a place of worship belonging to Christians on the outskirts of the port city.

St. Joseph Vaz worship centre located at Panir near Deralakatte in Mangaluru taluk was attacked by miscreants on Tuesday night. The incident came to light on Wednesday morning.

The glass enclosure of the statues of ‘Mother Mary’ and ‘Infant Jesus’ has been damaged due to stone pelting by the miscreants.

A local resident told police that he saw two unknown men suspiciously sitting in front of the worship centre in the night.

Health and Family Welfare Minister U T Khader rushed to the spot and directed the police to take necessary steps to nab the culprits immediately.

ACP Shankar Shetty and Sub Inspector Bharati along with a team of police arrived and conducted spot investigation.

The attack comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to protect all religious groups; his comments were seen as a response to a series of attacks on Christian institutions in New Delhi fueling concerns that minorities are being targeted by Hindu extremist groups.

On Monday Mohan Bhagwat incited fierce criticism after he said that Mother Teresa’s service to the poor was pinned on a drive to convert them to Christianity.

The RSS is the ideological mentor of the Prime Minister’s party, the BJP. Mr Bhagwat has, in recent months, presided over a series of controversies for declaring India is a nation of Hindus, a descriptor that has been attacked for undermining the equality to all faiths guaranteed by the Constitution.

The PM has been accused by opponents of failing to rein in hardline affiliate groups focused on a Hindu-dominant agenda that includes ghar wapasi – the campaign to convert Muslims and Christians to Hinduism.

RSS-inspired charity under probe in UK over 'extremist' views

February 21, 2015 by Nasheman

Impressionable school children are taught that, to destroy Hindu history is the secret conspiracy of the Christians, and are told by their tutor, when it comes to Islam, they are the world's worst religion.

Impressionable school children are taught that, to destroy Hindu history is the secret conspiracy of the Christians, and are told by their tutor, when it comes to Islam, they are the world’s worst religion.

London: The UK has launched a probe after a “disturbing” footage caught a teacher on camera making anti- Muslim and Christian remarks to students at a camp organised by an RSS-inspired charity.

The Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) UK – operating in the country since 1968 – is ideologically inspired by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Britain’s charities watchdog opened a statutory probe after concerns were raised on its “extremist” views and “improper” working this week.

The charity came under scanner after the ITV Network in its documentary ‘Charities Behaving Badly’ showed the HSS teacher at a youth camp in Herefordshire making controversial remarks against other religions when responding to questions.

“We are disturbed at the footage we have seen – some of which is so serious it is clearly a matter for the police,” said Michelle Russell, director of investigations, monitoring and enforcement at Charity Commission.

“Rightly, the public will be concerned about the footage and the implications for public trust and confidence in these charities, and the potential impact on the charity sector more generally. We can reassure the public that we take these issues seriously,” she said.

The statutory inquiry will investigate comments made by the individual invited to speak at the charity event in the presence of the charity’s beneficiaries and the management and oversight by the trustees of such events.

“These kinds of incidents illustrate why it is important for the regulator to have the right tools to do the job. There are currently loopholes in the existing regulatory framework which we are seeking to close by looking for increased powers in the draft Protection of Charities Bill,” Russell said.

The commission said that in the case of HSS UK, this is new information that has been brought to its attention and that has resulted in immediate regulatory action.

UK-based Islamic and Sikh charities have also faced similar heat. In the case of an Islamic charity, Global Aid Trust, the chief executive has stepped down after the ITV investigation staff was caught by praising terrorists and even offering advice on how to become a jihadist in Syria.

The trust is also the subject of an ongoing fraud investigation by the UK’s National Terrorism Financial Investigation Unit.

The trustees of both Global Aid Trust Limited and HSS UK have been notified of the commission’s decision to open the inquiries and both have complied with the commission’s requests for information and documents to date, the commission said.

HSS UK stressed that the individual caught on camera was not an office-bearer, adding that it will take “even greater care that no views are expressed from its platform that could directly or indirectly promote interfaith discord”.

The commission said it is awaiting access to all of the footage obtained relating to the charities so that this can be reviewed and the regulatory concerns addressed through the investigations that have been opened.

It will publish a report at the conclusion of each inquiry.

In a case unrelated with the TV probe, the commission has opened a statutory inquiry into Khalsa Missionary Society, which was set up to advance the Sikh religion in the UK through prayer meetings and lectures, and producing literature on Sikhism.

The inquiry has been opened as a result of an ongoing investigation by the Home Office into suspected immigration abuse. The commission will examine if the charity was set up and registered for an improper purpose and if the trustees have misused charitable funds.

Prakash Karat calls for broad platform against communal forces

February 20, 2015 by Nasheman

Prakash Karat

Alappuzha: CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat Friday said a broad platform should be formed against communal forces in the country.

Addressing the opening session of the 21st state conference of the CPI(M) here, Karat dubbed the Narendra Modi government as a joint enterprise of the RSS and BJP.

He also accused the Centre of launching a ‘right wing offensive” in the country to serve the interests of corporates and Hindutva forces.

“The Modi government with bypassing Parliament by bringing in a spate of ordinances and hiding from the people the details of the defence framework agreement with the United States,” he said.

He also expressed concern over the attacks on minorities and growing intolerance towards freedom of expression in the realms of art and culture.

“Within the short period of nine months of the Modi Government it is clear that our country is witnessing a right wing offensive. This right wing offensive is driven by two major forces. One, the corporates and big business groups and the other RSS-led Hindutva.”

“While the corporates were pushing for aggressively pursuing the neo-liberal policies, RSS and the Hindutva forces were pushing their communal agenda,” the CPI(M) leader said.

“We have a government which is a joint enterprise of the BJP and the RSS” and this had become amply clear with the formation of a co-ordination panel between the two.

“We have a situation where the RSS is not only running and guiding the BJP, but also providing directions and guidance to run the Government,” he said.

In a speech that targeted entirely the saffron outfits largely sparing Congress and other parties, Karat said the ordinances, including that pertaining to the land acquisition, promulgated by the government exposed its “right wing character.”

While calling for strengthening Left unity, Karat avoided mention of the the flare-up in the feud between the party’s state leadership and veteran leader V S Achuthanandan on the eve of the state conference.

However, the issue is expected to come up prominently during the deliberations during the conference, which will conclude on February 23.

For the CPI(M) state conference, held every three years, marks the culmination of an elaborate inner-party democratic exercise, staring from branch to the state level, ahead of the party Congress to be held in Vishakhapatnam in April.

Despite the wordy showdown between state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and V S Achuthanandan, the latter hoisted the party flag marking the beginning of proceedings.

In 2014, 147 cases including the death of at least two persons in 2014 killed for their Christian faith were recorded by Alliance Defending Freedom India and The Evangelical Fellowship of India along with other Human Rights and Civil Society groups. The vicious hate campaigns, physical violence, police complicity and State impunity contribute to the persecution of the Christian community in many states of India.

The report titled ’Hate and Targeted Violence against Christians in India – Report 2014’ shows Chhattisgarh topping the list with 28 incidents of crime, followed closely by neighbouring Madhya Pradesh with 26, Uttar Pradesh with 18 and Telengana, newly carved out of Andhra Pradesh, with 15 incidents.

The violence peaked between August and October with 56 cases, before zooming up to 25 cases during the Christmas season. Much of the violence, 54 percent, is of threats, intimidation, coercion, often with the police looking on. Physical violence constituted a quarter of all cases, 24 per cent, and violence against Christian women, a trend that is increasingly being witnessed seen since the carnage in Kandhamal, Odisha, in 2007 and 2008, was 11 per cent. Breaking of statues and the Cross, and other acts of desecration were recorded in about 8 per cent of the cases, but many more were also consequent to other forms of violence against institutions. Police inaction and its failure to arrest the guilty in most cases, its propensity to try to minimize the crime, and in rural areas especially, its open partisanship has almost become the norm.

The violence has continued well into the New Year 2015 with at least 27 incidents already being recorded by SpeakOutAgainstHate.org.

President asks Governors to ensure communal harmony in states

February 11, 2015 by Nasheman

Governors Conference

New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday warned that any deviation from the Constitutional principles and provisions would weaken the democratic fabric of the country and “jeopardise” social, economic and political well being of citizens.

In his opening remark at the 46th Governors Conference in Delhi, Mr. Mukherjee said Constitution was the only guiding document for providing framework for governance and asked Governors to ensure peace and communal harmony.

“Every Indian looks forward to the Constitution as the guarantor of liberties, freedom and equality. Any deviation from the principles and provisions embodied in the Constitution would weaken the democratic fabric of the country and jeopardise the social, economic and political well-being of our citizens,” he said.

The President said the Governors and Lt. Governors have the “primary responsibility” to ensure that the affairs of the States and Union Territories are conducted strictly in accordance with the letter and spirit of this hallowed document.

“Prevalence of peace and communal harmony must be ensured,” he said at the conference, which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Ministers.

'Ghar Wapsi' will stop after 15 cr people are reconverted: VHP

February 11, 2015 by Nasheman

sadhvi_prachi

Aligarh: Sadhvi Prachi Arya, a prominent Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader, has said that the ‘Ghar Wapsi’ programme will continue till the fifteen crore people who, she claimed, have left the Hindu fold post Independence, are “reconverted to Hinduism”.

“The ‘Ghar Wapsi’ programme launched by some Hindutva organisations would continue until all the fifteen crore people who have left the Hindutva fold after Independence are reconverted to Hinduism,” Arya said at a convention organised by VHP at the Ramleela Grounds in the old City last night.

She also said that the Father of the Nation title to Mahatma Gandhi was “unwarranted”.

“The title of the Father of Nation to Gandhi was unwarranted because the true sacrifice for attaining freedom was carried out by others,” she said.

“The credit for India’s independence was wrongly attributed to Gandhi when it should have been given to Vir Savarkar and Bhagat Singh,” she said.

Sadhavi said the VHP would also continue its movement to ensure increase in the population of Hindus in India which had been steadily declining compared to others.

“I and BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj are receiving threats but we are not scared and would continue working for the rights of the Hindu community,” she said.

The VHP also announced that it would launch a movement for renaming Aligarh as ‘Harigarh’ which, the organisation claimed, was the city’s original name.

The convention was attended by senior BJP leaders including Lok Sabha MP Satish Gautam and city Mayor Shakuntala Bharti.

February 10, 2015 by Nasheman

swami-omji

New Delhi: A video has appeared online in which a Hindu Mahasabha leader one Swami Omji has threatened to shoot Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal.

“We killed Mahatma Gandhi… we will shoot down Kejriwal too,” said Swami Omji, a leader of Hindu Mahasabha and strong supporter of Narendra Modi.

Omji, who contested as an Independent candidate in the Delhi assembly elections from Palika Bazaar constituency, had openly supported BJP candidate and claimed that his intention behind contesting the election was to divide AAP and Congress votes.

Speaking to media persons before the announcement of poll results the fanatic leader with ith the attire of a ‘Sadhu’ said: “I am from Hindu Mahasabha but BJP is my party. I am also global president of Om Saiji Party. Since Asaram and Narayan Sai are in jail, the responsibility fell on my shoulders.”

Calling Kejriwal, an anti-national and traitor, the Hinduva leader also claimed that he had once barged into the house of Kejriwal and thrashed him. “…On 21st January 2014, I entered Kejriwal’s house and thrashed him.”

He went on to claim that Hindu Mahasabha had killed Mahatma Gandhi. “…Nathuram Godse was our man. We killed Mahatma Gandhi… Will kill Kejriwal too,” he said.

Bengaluru: Criminal cases have been registered against VHP leader Praveen Togadia and organisers of ‘Hindu Virat Samavesha’ for allegedly violating prohibitory orders issued by Bengaluru Police Commissioner MN Reddi.

“We have booked one criminal case against Togadia and cases against the organisers for violating prohibitory orders,” a top police official, who did not wish to be named, said in Bengaluru on Monday night.

Togadia has been booked under Section 188 of IPC,invoked against an offender for disobeying the order duly promulgated by public servant.

Sections 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence omitted in prosecution of common object), and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the IPC have been invoked against event organisers, he said.

Section 188 was also invoked against the organisers for violating orders for holding the programme beyond the prescribed time limit. “Permission was granted to hold the event from 3 pm to 5 pm, but it extended to 7.40 pm,” the official said.

This section also was invoked against organisers for playing a 15-minute video footage of Togadia’s speech, defying the orders of the Police Commissioner, the official said.

On 7 February, Reddi had issued an order, prohibiting organisers from displaying and transmitting Togadia’s speech through any form of media for two days.

Last week, he had imposed the prohibitory orders on the ground that Togadia’s ‘provocative’ and ‘inflammatory’ speeches would have ‘grave’ consequences and likelihood of breach of peace.

VHP had challenged the Commissioner’s orders on Togadia’s entry into the city in the High Court with the interim prayer for a stay on the ban.

While declining the interim plea, the Judge, however, had said Hegde’s petition was maintainable and adjourned the matter without mentioning the next date of hearing.

Bengaluru: The organisers of the Virat Hindu Samajotsava in the City played a pre-recorded video clip of a fiery speech by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) international working president Praveen Togadia in Hindi on Sunday. This is despite a police ban on airing his speeches in any form.

In the speech, Togadia said: “Let no one come and teach us religious tolerance. From the time of creation of the universe we have religious tolerance,” hinting at US President Barack Obama’s remark during his recent visit to India. Obama had said the “acts of intolerance” experienced by religious faiths of all types in India in the past few years would have shocked Mahatma Gandhi.

“Teach it to those who are into religious conversions. From now on, no Hindu shall be converted and we will do ghar wapsi to bring them back.” He also said, “We will get rid of all Bangladeshi Muslims living in the country.”

He exhorted Hindus to come together, leaving the caste system behind, and demanded a “Samvyadhanik Hindu Rashtra” (Constitutional Hindu nation).

The clip — which was played at the end of the over three-hour conclave — stopped the crowd in their tracks, many of whom had started leaving the venue. As the two giant screens played the video clip, people stood in rapt attention.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Alok Kumar, who was present at the venue, said: “The organisers have violated the police order. We have made a note of this. We will consult legal experts and go ahead with the proceedings. So far, we have not detained anyone.

On Saturday, City Police Commissioner M N Reddi had issued an order prohibiting Keshav Hegde, VHP organising secretary, and other organisers of the ‘Samavesha’ from displaying and transmitting any speech of Togadia through audio, visual or any other media at the venue for two days, from 6 pm on February 7 to 6 pm on February 9.
