Movie Review: ‘Bajirao Mastani’ is spell binding, captivating, enchanting, endearing & entertaining beyond imagination

December 18, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Bajirao Mastani

Banner: Sanjay Leela Bhansali Films
Producer: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Star Cast: Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Milind Sonam, Aditya Pancholi, Tanvi Azmi, Sukhada Khandekar, Anuja Gokhale, Vaibbhav Tatwadi, Ayush Tandon, Sanjay Mishra & Mahesh Manjrekar et al
Music: Sanchit Balhara, Shreyas Puranik & Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Sure enough director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a well – known filmmaker of Bollywood, who needs no special introduction whatsoever. He had conceived this dream of making a historic biopic on Bajirao Mastani almost a decade ago. But he shelved the project midway due to unavoidable circumstances. And during this interim phase he ended up making films like Black, Saawasriya, Guzarish, Goliyon Ki Rasleela – Ram Leela. And finally he succeeded in filming & releasing his ambitious decade long dream project Bajirao Mastani. And what a brilliant film he has made!!!

Bajirao Mastani is a short & sweet triangular love drama. The scripted scenario of Bajirao Mastani kicks off with Bajirao (Ranveer Singh) being appointed as a Peshwa. Then soon enough Mastani (Deepika Padukone) seeks his help to save her kingdom. Although Bajirao is already married to Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra), love blossoms between Bajirao & Mastani.

In short Bajirao Mastani explicitly projects the period love story, the lovers conflict, the dramatic altercations, the battle sequences and of course, the ostentatiously opulence settings. The script is faultless, the pace is racy, in fact director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has kept a tight reigns on his cast & crew and thereby no one falters. The entire film keeps you hooked till the end with not a dull moment till the climax arrives which leaves you with a filling of déjà vu. Overall Bajirao Mastani is an enthralling period film that transports you to an era you had only read about in history books.

The entire team of Sanjay Leela Bhansali comprising of screenplay by Prakash R. Kapadia, additional screenplay by Sanjay Leela Bhansali & Mallika Dutt Gharde, editing by Rajesh G. Pandey, cinematography by Sudeep Chatterjee, music by Sanchit Balhara, Shreyas Puranik & Sanjay Leela Bhansali, action by Sham Kaushal, production designing by Sriram Kannan Iyengar, Sujeet Subhash Sawant, Saloni & Ankush Dhatrak et all deserves kudos for their brilliant efforts as they have given their full concentration & cooperation for Bhansali’s dream offering Bajirao Mastani. Besides Bhansali and his crew have adorned the film with fascinating characters & inspirational sub – plots that advance into a stunning culmination. But somewhere along the line Bajirao Mastani’s music does reminds you off the classical touch that reflects in all the songs especially the “Pinga” song that has an uncanny resemblance to “Dola Re” from Devdas.

Performance wise Ranveer Singh as Bajirao has delivered a mind blowing act. He is in his element by sinking his teeth deep into his character which proves he is in top form. This time he has finally proved that he is certainly an actor to be reckoned with and is here to stay. His body language is in sync with his character from “The Beginning” to “The End”. He has worked wonders in the climatic portions too. Deepika Padukone as Mastani is a sheer delight. She adds one more histrionic feather in her illustrious & chequered career after Piku. Priyanka Chopra springs a magical surprise with her tour de performance. She is indeed too good to be true. And both Deepika Padukone & Priyanka Chopra deserves all kudos oriented brownie points for depicting their brilliant on screen chemistry, almost as good as the Aishwarya Rai Bachchan & Maadhuri Dixit’s on screen chemistry in Bhansali’s own film Devdas. And last but not the least even the supporting cast is top notch, especially Tanvi Azmi (terrific), Milind Soman (wonderful), Vaibbhav Tatwawdi (superb), Yateen Karyekar (competent). Mahesh Manjrekar (perfect), Raza Murad (good) & Aditya Pancholi (eye catching). In fact all of them have enacted their respective roles with finesse.

Tail Piece: Bajirao Mastani is like a precious cinematic diamond which will leave you stunned till the last frame. It will leave you spell bound with its picture perfect performances, deft direction, superb screenplay, dynamic dialogues, melodious music and last but not the least the lavish mounting. Surely not be missed highly recommended fare.

December 10, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra holds onto sexiest woman crown in “50 sexiest Asian women list” founded by award winning Entertainment Editor Asjad Nazir for UK based Eastern Eye newspaper.

Amongst all the top 50 sexiest women figuring on the recently revealed Planet list Priyanka Chopra tops the list. The list is founded by none other than Asjad Nazir the award winning Entertainment Editor of UK based Eastern Eye newspaper. The complete list will feature in Eastern Eye on Friday 11th Dec, 2015.

Priyanka Chopra once again beat off tough global competition to retain her title as the sexiest Asian woman in the world this year, as featured in 2015’s “50 Sexiest Asian Women” list.

The singer & actress came out on top following millions of votes pouring in from across the globe for the 2015 edition of the popular annual poll conducted by UK based Eastern Eye newspaper. This is the 3rd time in the past 4 years that Priyanka has topped the long running list of 50 sexiest Asian women on the planet.

The stunning win rounds off another dream year for the actress, which includes winning accolades for her 2014 film Mary Kom, hit Bollywood film Dil Dhadakne Do and American TV serial Quantico.

On the eve of gaining this recognition Priyanka Chopra averred, “Now that’s a title I’m happy to hold on to. I’m bringing sexy back! A big thank you to everyone who’s voted for me. Thank you also to Eastern Eye for making me feel ‘sexy’; well, at least for another year. A piece of advice to the ladies – it’s all in the mind. Remember, sexy is as sexy does.”.

While entertainment editor of Eastern Eye averred, “Priyanka Chopra is doing India proud on the global stage and winning loads of admirers. This was illustrated by the largest ever number of votes by non – Asians that she received from all over the world. She is clearly building bridges internationally through her art and will continue to do so in the coming years. And by excelling in TV, film & music, the multi – talented actress has shown just how far hard work can take you.”

The mass interest in the 12th edition of the list was such that it was trending on Twitter across India & Pakistan during the voting process.

Popular television actress Sanaya Irani rose one place from last year to come 2nd and fellow small screen star Drashti Dhami took the 3rd spot. A – list Bollywood actresses Deepika Padukone (4) & Katrina Kaif (5) completed the top 5. Others in the top 10 are Nia Sharma (6), Kareena Kapoor Khan (7), Gauahar Khan (8), Sonam Kapoor (9) and the highest placed Pakistani, Mahira Khan, (10).

The highest placed newcomer in this year’s list is young Indian television actress Niti Taylor (15), who thanked her fans for all their love, support & blessing, which elevated her into the list for the 1st time.

Just like in the past few years, the biggest surprise was the dominance of television stars. Sanaya Irani (2), Drashti Dhami (3), Nia Sharma (6) & Gauahar Khan (8) all retained their places in the top 10. Other small screen actresses in the list included Preetika Rao (11), Shakti Mohan (12), Asha Negi (13), Surbhi Jyoti (17), Charlie Chauhan (22), Hina Khan (26), Anita Hassanandani (28), Sukiriti Kandpal (31) & Mohena Singh (43).

Asjad Nazir further averred, “There are 27 small screen stars in the list this year, which once again shows television has become the most powerful & popular medium of all. Even the winner, Priyanka Chopra, made her television debut with Quantico this year. This shows that TV plays arguably the biggest part in the lives of people around the world. It also illustrates why so many movie producers are now signing TV actresses for big film projects and why movie stars are venturing into TV.”

The highest placed British woman is once again Jasmin Walia (28) & Canadian actress Hannah Simone (35), a newcomer in the list, is the highest placed North American. At 48 years of age, Madhuri Dixit (44) is the oldest lady in the 2015 countdown & 20 year old actress Radhika Madan (24) is the youngest.

Others in the 2015 list include Shraddha Kapoor (19), Bipasha Basu (25), Alia Bhatt (27), Parineeti Chopra (33), Mehreen Syed (38) & Kanika Kapoor (48).

The full countdown of 2015’s 50 Sexiest Asian Women will be published in the UK’s most established & popular Asian newspaper, Eastern Eye, on 11th Dec, 2015.

Asjad Nazir concluded by explaining, “What continues to make this list really special is the strong presence of ‘real women’ who the public can relate to. Most fans look at the all – round qualities of those they are voting for and that is why more women than men vote annually.”

With a 47 year heritage, The Asian Media & Marketing Group, publishes a stable of market leading magazines for the Asian community in UK & USA. The company hosts a number of hugely successful events & award dinners affiliated with its magazines. Movie Review: 'Dil Dhadakne Do' is a perfectly enjoyable picture of a complex relationship

June 16, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Dil Dhadakne Do

Banner: Junglee Pictures & Excel Entertainment
Producer: Ritesh Sidhwani & Farhan Akhtar
Director: Zoya Akhtar
Cast: Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Farhan Akhtar, Ridhima Sood, Rahul Bose,
Zarina Wahab, Vikrant Massey, Parmeet Sethi, Manoj Pahwa, Pawan Chopra & above all Aamir Khan
Music: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

To say that Zoya Akhtar is an accomplished director would be an understatement. She had proved her her directorial mettle with her debut directorial venture ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’. And with her latest directorial venture ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ she has once again scored brownie points.

Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor) is a successful businessman who owns Ayka, a company on the verge of bankruptcy. He has a troubled relationship with his wife, Neelam (Shefali Shah), and his 2 children, Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) & Kabir (Ranveer Singh). Ayesha has a successful business of her own, but is unhappily married to Manav (Rahul Bose). Kabir unwillingly participates in the family business and yearns to pursue a career as a pilot. In celebration of Kamal & Neelam’s 30th anniversary, they invite their family & friends for a 10 day cruise trip across the Mediterranean. Among their invitees, are Mr. Sood (Parmeet Sethi) and his family. Kamal plots to get Kabir married to Sood’s daughter, Noorie (Riddhima Sood), in exchange for his investing in Ayka. In the ship, Kabir meets a free-spirited dancer, Farah Ali (Anushka Sharma), and engages in a romantic relationship with her. Noorie, on the other hand, falls in love with Rana (Vikrant Massey), the son of a family hated by her parents.

Even giving Zoya Akhtar a standing ovation for her directorial triumph would be in suffice. She has even succeeded in extracting an earnest performance from her principal cast. And yes even from Aamir Khan who has lent his voice for the dog pluto who ultimately proves to be the mainstay of the film. A deserving special mention must also go to the film’s cinematography (Carlos Catalan) for having presented some of the breath taking & amazing visuals in the film. The film’s editing (Manan Mehta & Anand Subaya) gives the film its pace with which the film sails smoothly.

Performance wise Anil Kapoor is 1st rate and in full form, Shefali Shah is extraordinnare, Ranveer Singh is picture perfect, Priyanka Chopra is the scene stealer, Anushka Sharma is terrific & Farhan Akhtar is excellent. Débutante Riddhima Sood is a revelation. While the rest of the cast comprising of Rahul Bose, Zarina Wahab, Vikrant Massey, Parmeet Sethi, Manoj Pahwa, Pawan Chopra lend perfect credibility to their individual roles.

Tail Piece: ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ is a classy film meant for the elite multiplex audiences. While the single screen cine goers may find this movie a trifle boring.
