Movie Review: 'Kuch Kuch Locha Hai' is entertaining but hardly convincing

May 11, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Kuch-Kuch-Locha-Hai

Banner: Magic Picture & Entertainment & Maximus Multimedia Pvt Ltd.
Producer: Mukesh Purohit
Director: Devang Dholakia
Cast: Sunny Leone, Ram Kapoor, Evelyn Sharma, Suchita Trivedi & Navdeep Chabbra
Music: Dharam-Sandeep, Amjad-Nadeem, Arko Pravo Mukherjee, Ikka, Ali Quli Mirza & the Late R. D. Burman
Media Consultant: Infinite Expressions

Director Devang Dholakia is a veteran of sorts and he manages to pull off a comic spoof, of a Gujarati household stationed in Malaysia, in his latest offering ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’. Besides he has followed the new trend of keeping a rhyming name as a film’s title so Karan Johar’s ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ becomes Devang Dholakia’s ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’.

The plotted scenario of ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ kicks off with the introduction of Pravin Patel aka PP (Ram Kapoor), his family and the girl of his dreams Shanaya (Sunny Leone), who is a Bollywood actress. PP’s family consists of his ‘religiously religious’ wife Kokila aka ‘Krokodile’ (Suchita Trivedi) and his son Jigar aka ‘Jigolo’ (Navdeep Chabra), who is an aspiring rockstar who are happily settled in Malaysia. However, they are totally unaware of PP’s ‘feelings’ towards Shanaya. On the other hand PP’s love for Shanaya becomes an obsession so much so that he has a secret ‘worship chamber’ of hers in his video shop! PP’s luck hits a goldmine when he gets chosen as a winner in a contest whose bumper prize is a ‘date with Shanaya’. Amidst the ‘date’, Shanaya, impressed with PP’s Gujarati mannerisms, offers to stay with him as a part of her homework for the dream role of a Gujarati girl in her forthcoming film with a well-known director. PP, who just cannot believe his luck, lands up lying to her that he is unmarried and stays with his parents. On the other hand, PP sends his wife to India after making a fake call about his wife’s mother’s ill health. When Shanaya tells him that she would like to spend time in a close knit family, PP saves his skin and the situation yet again by convincing his rock star son to become his father and his son’s girlfriend Naina (Evelyn Sharma) to become his mother!

Devang Dholakia has indeed made an entertaining film but somewhere along the line the movie lacks conviction. Some parts of the film are really lively and quite amusing. Hats off to Devang for creating a perfect ambience of a richie rich Gujarati household in tandem with the whims, fancies and eccentrics of each and every character. A well deserving special mention also goes to Ikka, Arko, Intense, Amjad Nadeem, Dharam, Sandeep, Ali Quli Mirza, King & Color (Music), A.K.N. Sebastian (Cinematography) & Sanjay Ingle (Editing).

Performance wise ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ is a Ram Kapoor & Sunny Leone film all the way and they both complement each other with their picture perfect act. The small screen sensation Ram Kapoor has delivered a smashing performance in ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ compared to his extremely forgettable act in ‘Humshakals’. While Sunny Leone is improving her glamour quotient, sex appeal & of course her acting skills too in film after film. Suchita Trivedi is apt. Veteran Gujarati actor Mehul Buch hams his way to glory. Evelyn Sharma is another addition to the long list of glamour doll yet she acts well in her part as Ram Kapoor’s aged mother on screen. And last but not the least is débutante Navdeep Chabra another welcome addition to the long list of the handsome hunks of Bollywood. He is also perfect only as Ram Kapoor’s aged father on screen where his chemistry with the senior actor is seen to be believed.

Tail Piece: ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ is a light hearted entertainer for one & all.

"My upcoming movie 'Kuch Kuch Locha Hai' is a comic entertainer:" Sunny Leone

May 5, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

sunny-leone

Met Sunny Leone recently at the promotional event of her upcoming film namely Devang Dholakia’s ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ at the Levo Restaurant in Model Town, Andheri, Mumbai. Right at the outset she came across as a very warm, vivacious & vibrant persona. After winning the hearts of the International & the regional audiences, in films like ‘The Girl Next Door’, ‘Pirate’s Blood’, ‘The Virginity Hit’ et al & ‘DK’ (Kannada), ‘Vadacurry’ (Tamil), ‘Current Theega’ (Telugu) et al, Karanjeet Kaur Vohra (Her Birth name) aka Sunny Leone (Her screen name) is an American – Canadian actress now literally making the Indian cine goers dance to her tunes in her Bollywood films like ‘Jism 2’, ‘Shootout At Wadala’, ‘Jack Pot’, ‘Ragini MMS 2’, ‘Hate Story 2’, ‘Ek Paheli Leela’ and now she will repeat history with Devang Dholakia’s ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’. Just with more than half a dozen film’s release Sunny Leone has became an actress to be reckoned with, in fact a household name amongst the Indian audiences not to forget the fact that she had already charmed her way into the hearts of the International audiences and by the way she has now also settled down into a blissful marital life with her better half Daniel Webber who now also manages both her personal as well as professional affairs and of course Daniel Webber was himself launched as an actor in a recently announced Bollywood film ‘Dangerous Husn’. How Symbolic!!!

To set the ball rolling in your court, can we say that Sunny Leone is content with her Bollywoodian career so far?

You bet I am. As in my half a dozen Bollywoodian films released so far I have got the meatiest roles that I could really sink my teeth into. What more could I ask for? I have already enacted diverse roles, roles that not only a newbie actress but an actress of repute would die for. And I think my recent best was in Ahmed Khan & Bobby Khan’s ‘Ek Paheli Leela’. And wait & watch! The crowning glory of my histrionics per se would be in my upcoming film namely Devang Dholakia’s ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’.

So would you like to elaborate on what is ‘Kuch Kuch Locha hai’ all about?

My upcoming movie ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ is a comic entertainer, a jolly good film & a roller coaster ride all the way from start to end. Okay! So ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ is about a Patel family of which Ram Kapoor is the head. Every thing is hunky dory in the Patel family until he meets and falls in love with a Bollywood Diva that’s me. And then everything goes topsy turvy in the Patel family’s life and of course the Bollywood Divas life too.

Your opinion about Devang Dholakia as a director?

Oh my God what do I say about Devang? While working with him during ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ I found Devang to be the sweetest & the coolest director on the sets. He would give his directorial instructions to us and then also accept our impromptu suggestions, thereby also giving us a complete leeway to tackle the role the way we perceive but not away from the way he has conceived it.

Ram Kapoor is known as the biggest prankster on & off the sets. How could you cope up with him during the making of ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’?

First of all I was too shocked when I was told that Ram Kapoor would be my co-star. Frankly speaking my 1st reaction was how will this oddest pairing of Ram Kapoor – Sunny Leone work? But then I thought that if such oddest pairing works in Hollywood then why not in Bollywood?

But Ram Kapoor…….?

Oh yes! I am coming to that. I was a bit apphrensive about working with Ram Kapoor in the beginning. But once I started interacting with him on the sets of ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ I found him to be a very lovable & a very frank & honest person. But of course I was very scared of his innocent physicality touch on & off the sets, so I was very protective about myself whenever he was around on & off the sets too. But by and by I realized that it was just in his nature to behave with everyone alike.

So what’s next after ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’?

A Lots. The fIlms to be released after ‘Kuch Kuch Locha Hai’ are ‘Balvinder Singh Pass Ho Gaya’, ‘Mastizaade’, ‘Tina & Lolo’, ‘One Night Stand’ and many more International, Boilywood & Regional films  This is just the beginnin   which has no end to it.

Now that your better half Daniel Webber has also stepped into the Bollywoodian limelight, do you guide him or offer your precious tips in histrionics per se?

Yes I did attend the launch function of his debut film ‘Dangerous Husn’ after which he got busy with his workshops for ‘Dangerous Husn’, But of course whenever we both are free and before going to bed I give Hindi coaching to Daniel. Which I have myself picked up and perfected it in the long run.

One last question. You have a very controversial past, which is like a blemish, and its reputation you have rarely clarified. Would you like to offer any clarification of your own free will?

To be very frank & honest my emphatic answer is no with a capital “N”. The only thing I would say in this regard is that there is no point in raking up my past. I was what I was and I am what I am “Now”. And why bother about my future, when I am myself not bothered about it. Period!!!!!

Movie Review: 'Ek Paheli Leela' is like a shabbily packaged old wine in a new bottle

April 13, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Ek Paheli Leela

Banner: Paper Doll Entertaiment
Producer: Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Ahmed Khan & Shaira Khan
Director: Bobby Khan
Cast: Sunny Leone, Rajneesh Duggal, Jay Bhanushali, Mohit Alawat, Rahul Dev, Jas Arora, Shivani Tanksale, V J Andy, Daniel Weber, Ehsaan Qureshi, Kulvinder Bakshish, Nausheen Ahmed, Girish Thapar, Jitendra Baiswal & Arun Singh
Music: Meet Bros Anjjan, Amaal Mallik, Dr. Zeus, Tony Kakkar & Uzair Jaswal

Débutante director Bobby Khan tries his super best to rekindle & refresh the “reincarnation” movies memories in his debut offering ‘Ek Paheli Leela’ and one  must say that he does succeed to a great extent but…….! The 300 years old vintage voyeuristic carnival ‘EK Paheli Leela’ is aided & abetted by a promotional picturesque postcard, destinated & designated, journey from Milan to Jaisalmer. The oft repeated transitional jump from modern to rural and back to modernism is too frequent to be true. So much so that it leaves a jarringly jaded note of yawn inflicted boredom and the constant sexual innuendos is disguised as an entertainment spree, garnished with item numbers oriented songs galore, for the gullible cine goer.

Meera meets Leela  (Sunny Leone in a double role) 300 years apart. But certainly not in the same vein as ‘Sally Meets Harry’. Yes! Meera a topnotch model from Milan is scared shit of taking a flight so when her manager Andy (V J Andy) bags a modeling assignment for her in Jaisalmer he tries his own tricks to put Meera on flight en route to Jaisalmer. Out here she meets hunks left, right & centre before being enlightened by the 300 years old fabled past of Leela, her so called reincarnated “Humshakal”. There is Karan (Jay Bhanushali) who hallucinates about Leela his lover now Meera whom he could not marry in his past life due to the evil designs of Bhairav (Rahul Dev). There is Prince Ranveer (Mohit Ahlawat) who is so besotted by Meera that he finally ends up tying the knot with her even before Karan could reach Jaisalmer to stake his claim again. And last but not the least, there is Shravan (Rajniesh Duggal) who also hovers around Meera, not knowing exactly what he is upto.

The same is the case with the preview audiences who were not exactly sure of what they were upto in this entire confusion confounded mileu. Bobby Khan makes a welcome Bollywoodian debut with big brother choreographer Ahmed Khan at the productional helm of affairs in tandem with his spouse Shaira Khan, Krishan Kumar and above all T – Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar. Its all in the family (affair) as they say. Need I say more.

Performance wise it is Porn Queen Sunny Leone all the way who spells her own magic in her first ever double role, both in her glam quotient oriented as well as her first ever village belle avatar. Yet no cause for making merry as she still has to traverse millions of miles to reach her histrionics department. And above all the men in brief (roles) like Rahul Dev, Jas Arora, Mohit Ahlawat and above all Rajniesh Duggal are perfection personified as per the demand of their brief roles are concerned. The rest of the actors like Daniel Weber (Sunny Leone’s real life partner), Shivani Tanksale, V J Andy, Ehsaan Qureshi, Kulvinder Bakshish, Nausheen Ahmed, Girish Thapar, Jitendra Baiswal & Arun Singh just about fill in the blanks to make the film a complete or incomplete package. Take it whichever way you want, the choice structly rests with you.

Tail piece: ‘Ek Paheli Leela’ is strictly an adults fare meant only Sunny Leone and the beefy boys Jay Bhanushali, Mohit Alawat, Rahul Dev, Jas Arora & Rajniesh Duggal fans. Kids stay away.
