Mamata sworn in Bengal CM for second term, 41 ministers take oath

May 27, 2016 by Nasheman

Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee was on Friday sworn in for a second consecutive term as West Bengal chief minister at a grand public ceremony witnessed by thousands of supporters as well as eminent personalities.

Attired in a simple white sari and white stole, Banerjee was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi in a ceremony held at the city’s historic Indira Gandhi Sarani (Red Road), a wide boulevard that bisects the Maidan.

Banerjee, the state’s eighth chief minister and the first woman to occupy the post, took her oath in Bengali, and in the name of “Ishwar and Allah”.

She dedicated the event to “Ma, Mati, Manush” (Mother, land and people”, Banerjee’s pet slogan.

Along with the chief minister, 41 other ministers were also sworn in. The ministerial council has 18 fresh faces, including former Indian cricketer Laxmi Ratan Shukla, city mayor Sovan Chatterjee, noted Bengali singer Indranil Sen, veteran Trinamool leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, and Marxist-turned Trinamool lawmaker Abdur Rezzak Mollah.

Twenty-eight of the ministers were of cabinet rank, five ministers of state (independent charge) and eight ministers of state.

Chatterjee, Chattopadhyay and Mollah got cabinet berths, while Shukla and Sen were made ministers of state.

Three of the ministers are women, seven belong to the Muslim community, while the Scheduled Caste and tribe communities also got several representatives.

Amit Mitra, Partha Chatterjee, Subrata Mukherjee, Sovandeb Chattopadhyay and Joardar were the first group of ministers to be administered the oath by the governor after the chief minister. The other ministers were then sworn in in batches. A number of them were seen touching Banerjee’s feet after taking oath.

All the ministers took their oath in Bengali, except Golam Rabbani, who preferred Hindi.

Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay was among the guests who graced the occasion as well as Bangladesh Industry Minister Amir Hossain Amu. Union ministers Arun Jaitley and Babul Supriyo were present as well as chief ministers — Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi, Akhilesh Yadav of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar’s Nitish Kumar. Former chief ministers — Jammu and Kashmir’s Farooq Abdullah and Bihar’s Lalu Prasad were also present.

Ex Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, leading figures from the Bengali film industry, frontline industrialists of the state, members of the diplomatic corps also attended the function.

Thousands of people braving the intense heat assembled under the open sky to watch Didi (elder sister – as Banerjee is fondly called) begin her second innings at the helm of the eastern state.

The state’s opposition Left Front and state units of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) boycotted the function in protest against the attack on their activists, allegedly by ruling Trinamool Congress, during the polls.

Banerjee had taken over as chief minister for the first time on May 20, 2011 when she led an alliance of Trinamool Congress, Congress and Socialist Unity Centre of India- Communist to a huge win in the state assembly polls, ending 34 years of Left Front rule.

In the recent assembly elections, Banerjee led the Trinamool to a landslide, with the party winning 211 seats – well above the two-thirds majority mark of 196 – to retain power. The Congress-Left Front alliance won 77 seats in the 294-member house. The BJP and the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha got three seats each.

FLORA SAINI SEEKS INSPIRATION FROM DIMPLE KAPADIA FOR NAGESH KUKUNOOR’S DHANAK!

Flora Saini, who will be next seen in Nagesh Kukunoor’s DHANAK, is a huge fan of Dimple Kapadia. Flora, who plays a tribal woman belonging to Kalbeila tribe in DHANAK, was awestruck by Dimple’s film RUDAALI. Like all Nagesh’s stories, DHANAK is inspirational and spells hope & triumph. Flora says, “Nagesh sir is a school in himself and I learnt a lot from him in LAKSHMI and in DHANAK, he totally focuses on keeping everything very natural like we speak and behave in daily life, no acting”. While shooting in the interiors of Rajasthan is an experience she is unlikely to forget. “Being a hard core animal lover I had the opportunity of shooting with a camel, my 1st time near camel ever an that’s something I will never forget, I even remember his name Thela, she added. Flora is still awed as she talks about the bright hand – woved clothes, beaded jewellery & bid belts worn by the tribes. Flora says, ” I have spend lot of time in the sun and used makeup to look tanned”. Flora has also played pivotal roles in movies like MSG, GUDDU KI GUN and also made a cameo in DABANGG 2.

The 3rd song was rendered by Antara Mitra at Krishna Recording Theatre. It was penned by Harsh Thayi and set to tune by Ricky Mishra who is also the director of the film. Amit Singh, the grandson of Christo Singh is producing the film which is written by Varadaraj Swami. The earlier 2 songs were rendered by Usmaan Meer & Krishna Bevra at Enzy recording Studio, Goregaon. A popular actor is being considered for the role of Christo Singh. Sujoy Ghosh was my driving instructor.”Well, nothing like a film experience that teaches you something new!!

CHOREOGRAPHING SARBJIT MOVIE WAS VERY DIFFICULT FOR ME SAYS VISHNU DEVA

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Randeep Hooda & Richa Chadda starrer SARBJIT has more of Vishnudeva’s catchy moves. The film has left us stunned with Aishwarya’s never before seen avatar especially in the “Tung Luk” song choreographed by Vishnu Deva, which makes each & everyone dance on their feet. The Punjabi number has been sung by Sunidhi Chauhan & Sukhwinder Singh, who are very well known for their Punjabi songs. Randeep Hooda & Richa Chaddha also make stunning appearance in the song, as they dance on the Punjabi beats. Vishnu Deva said, “Sarbjit was a difficult movie to choreograph because of its hard hitting story. “Tung Luk” is a fresh punjabi song and we’ve tried to give it a fresh look too. So far we’ve been receiving great response, and we hope everyone continues to like it.”Helmed by Omung Kumar, the film is a biopic based on Sarbjit Singh, which showcases a real – life struggle of an Indian prisoner Sarbjit who died after a brutal attack in Pakistan jail in 2013.

NAWAZUDDIN SIDDIQUI LEARNS BENGALI FROM VIDYA BALAN & AMITABH BACHCHAN

In Ribhu Dasgupta’s emotional thriller TE3N, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who is sharing the screen space with Amitabh Bachchan for the very 1st time, even learnt Bengali on the sets!! The atmosphere on the sets, in Kolkatta was one of bonhomie, Bengali food and often lots of conversations in the Melliflous language, as director Ribhu Dasgupta, creative producer Sujoy Ghosh, Vidya Balan & Amitabh Bachchan (both of whom know the language quite well), would discuss the activities of the day in Bengali so much so that Nawazuddin over the course of the shoot learnt Bengali well enough to hold a conversation, unwittingly! Sujoyda, Ribhu, Mr Bachchan & Vidya, who feel quite at home in Kolkatta, would often slip into Bengali phrases in their conversations, so even Nawaz by the end of the shoot understood most of it and could speak quite well, helped by the actors. We are sure Big B & Vidya Balan must have made for amazing teachers!!

Columbia Asia Hospitals along with Bangalore Traffic Police launches Good Samaritan Awards

May 27, 2016 by Nasheman

Columbia Asia Hospitals

Bangalore: India sees at least one death due to road traffic accident (RTA) every four minutes. Many precious lives can be saved if RTA victims can be given medical attention in time. In a one of its kind initiative, Columbia Asia Hospitals, in association with the Bangalore Traffic Police, today announced the launch of Good Samaritan Award, to encourage the Good Samaritans, who have helped accident victims, get medical attention and saved their lives.

Speaking on the occasion, R Hitendra, Addl. Commissioner of Police, said, “It is a good initiative to recognize the Good Samaritans who have helped people during accidents. These people inspire millions. Moreover events like this will motivate many more people to come forward and extend a helping hand to accident victims.”

Now, we have a law in place, to help people who save lives in RTAs. Going forward, these Good Samaritans would not have to bear any civil or criminal liability for helping accident victims, added Hitendra.

Last year, 740 people lost their lives to road accidents and another 714 people incurred fatal injuries, in Bangalore alone. This year is no better. Within the first four months, already 248 victims have fallen prey to accidents and lost their lives. That apart, 237 people have suffered from fatal accidents. With more people falling prey to RTA with every passing year, it is high time that people come forward to help the accident victims get medical attention at the earliest.

Highlighting the importance of receiving medical attention within the golden hour for any fatal accident victim, Dr. Nanda Kumar Jairam, Chairman and Group Medical Director, Columbia Asia Hospitals, India, said, “It has been established that 50 % of fatalities from road traffic accidents can be avoided through intervention during the golden hour, as chances of survival are high with medical aid within this time. However, the fear of getting involved in a police investigation and being subjected to rigorous legal procedures often stops bystanders from helping road traffic accident victims. Now, the Good Samaritan guidelines are encouraging people to come forward and help the victims without any fear of being subjected to any criminal or civil liability.”

Stressing on the importance of knowing Basic Life Support (BLS) techniques, Dr. Jairam, added, “BLS goes a long way in saving lives during emergency situations. The steps that we take while attending an emergency can have a deep-rooted impact in saving the life of a patient. Considering the road traffic accidents and other medical emergencies, ideally every citizen should be trained in BLS.”

Addressing the media, Dr Sunil Rao, Vice President, Operations (South), Columbia Asia Hospitals, India, said, “Caught amidst busy traffic, how many of us would make an attempt to help the road traffic accident victim, get him the required medical attention, and try to save his life? Mostly, as passers-by, we will halt for a minute to glare at the situation before driving by to our destinations. However in Columbia Asia Hospital, we have got several cases, where life of RTA victims were saved due to timely intervention of a Good Samaritan.”

“Columbia Asia has been actively promoting the cause for Good Samaritans for the last one year by reaching out to the community. The hospitals in Bangalore have trained over 1000 people in BLS techniques across communities including traffic police, teachers, students, journalists and corporates in the past six months. BLS training is also being imparted by other Columbia Asia Hospitals in cities including Mysore, Pune, Ahmedabad, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad and Patiala,” said Dr. Rao

To encourage many more such Good Samaritans, we at Columbia Asia Hospitals, conceptualized the Good Samaritan Awards. We will be having our first ever Good Samaritan Awards in a month’s time. Going forward, every year, we will be awarding Good Samaritans who have played a vital role in saving life of any accident victim, he added.

“Good Samaritans can nominate themselves, or can be nominated by their friends and family, neighbors and colleagues for this award. One can logon to www.goodsamaritanindia.com to submit their details for nomination. Also people can approach the help desks of any of the Columbia Asia Hospitals to submit entries. The last date for submitting entries will be July 15 2016, explained Mr. Vinay Kaul, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Columbia Asia Hospitals, India.

Ernst Young is our knowledge partner for this initiative. Based on the framework created by them, a panel of elite judges will vet each of the entries and give scores. The candidate with the combined maximum points will be the winner. There are 15 awards to be won in the Individual and organization categories and the winners will be felicitated at the Good Samaritan Awards ceremony to be held in Bangalore in August, Kaul added.

The hospital authorities are hopeful that this Good Samaritan Awards will motivate citizens to take a step forward and help RTA victims get medical attention.

Nigerian student assaulted over car parking dispute

May 27, 2016 by Nasheman

Nigerian student assaulted

Hyderabad: A 23-year-old Nigerian student received head injuries after a man in his neighbourhood hit him with a rod following a dispute over car parking in Banjara Hills area here, police said today.

According to police, on Wednesday night an argument broke out between Nigerian national Ghazeem, a third-year degree student in a city college and a resident of Singadabasti locality in Banjara Hills area, and Mohd Gafoor after the former parked his car in front of Gafoor’s building, despite he being told to park it in his own apartment complex.

However, Ghazeem apparently refused to remove his car after which the scuffle broke out. Gafoor took out a rod and hit him on his head resulting in injuries, a senior police officer said.

“The incident occurred on Wednesday night after a dispute over car parking. Following a complaint by the Nigerian student, a case was registered against Gafoor and he has been taken into custody. We have started investigations into the matter,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (Banjara Hills Division) Uday Kumar Reddy told PTI.

A counter complaint was lodged by Gafoor, however, no case has been registered, the ACP added.

Bajrang Dal is not BJP, listen only to govt: Amit Shah on Ram Temple

May 27, 2016 by Nasheman

(AP Photo/Ajit Solanki)

New Delhi: BJP president Amit Shah steered clear of controversial issues like Ram temple and uniform civil code on Friday as he indicated that the party will fight the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls on development plank which, he insisted, has been the Modi government’s agenda.

With RSS affiliates Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal raising the pitch for Ram temple construction, an issue which fuelled the party’s rise in 90s, Shah asserted that such outfits cannot be equated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He also wondered on what basis the opposition was accusing his party of causing communal polarisation ahead of the state polls early next year. Political rivals and several public intellectuals say cases of religious and political intolerance have gone up since the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) came to power in 2014.

At a press conference to publicise the “achievements” of the Modi government, Shah chose to stick to the narrative of the central government’s “pro-poor” and “pro-farmers” work as he faced a volley of questions on BJP’s stand on controversial but core party issues in the light of crucial UP polls.

“These are part of our manifesto and if you read it you will find that it is mentioned there as to how we intend to work on them,” he said.

The BJP has maintained in its manifesto that it supports Ram temple construction but it should be done either with consensus or as per judicial decision.

“Bajrang Dal is not BJP,” he shot back when asked on its and VHP’s pitch for temple construction.

“You should only listen to the government,” he said on issues raised by these outfits, seen as BJP’s sister organisations.

To a question about armed training being given by Bajrang Dal to its activists in parts of UP, he said the state government should take action if there is anything unlawful.

Shah, who is credited with the party’s landslide win in the state during the Lok Sabha polls, was tight-lipped over whether it will name a chief ministerial candidate in the state, saying the issue is yet to be discussed in the party.

Home minister Rajnath Singh had on Thursday appealed to people at a rally in Saharanpur to end BJP’s 14-year-long exile and Shah was on Friday asked “who will be its Ram?”

“Ram will be decided. Public will decide it,” the BJP chief said.

He also asserted that BJP will form the next government in the state, adding that he saw Samajwadi Party as the main challenger.

Shah had said on Wednesday that the Samajwadi Party government’s “corruption and misgovernance” will be his party’s main issues besides development.

Indonesia: Death penalty, castration for child rapists

May 26, 2016 by Nasheman

Tough new punishments aimed at combating alarming rate of child sex abuse, but activists say measures will not work.

Indonesia’s introduction of tougher punishments for child sex offenders, including the death penalty and chemical castration, has won public applause – but activists are warning that the measures will not serve as a deterrent.

President Joko Widodo signed a decree on Wednesday introducing the harsher penalties, which also include fitting monitoring devices to offenders after their release from jail, in response to public anger at the fatal gang-rape of a schoolgirl.

The 14-year-old was snatched by a group of drunken men and boys on western Sumatra island in April and was found days later in woods, tied up and naked.

The case sparked a national debate about sexual violence and as more reports of sex attacks emerged, pressure mounted on the government to take action.

The new punishments mostly won praise in Indonesia, where there is strong backing for the death penalty, with members of the public and politicians voicing support.

“Castration is intended to have a deterrent effect and prevent repeat sexual offences,” said Abdul Malik Haramain, a politician from the Islamic party the National Awakening Party, which is part of the ruling coalition.

He insisted that castration would not violate human rights, as offenders would go through a legal process before the punishment was handed down.

Activists push back

Nevertheless, activists were unhappy, suggesting the punishments were a knee-jerk reaction.

Hartoyo, a prominent gay rights activist who has campaigned against the new punishments, said the regulation amounted to an “act of vengeance”.

“It only shows that the government is panicking and has no real understanding about sexual violence,” added the campaigner, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

Nur Kholis, of the National Commission on Human Rights, said his group was generally against the death penalty and did not believe that castration would have a deterrent effect.

The presidential decree brings the new punishments immediately into effect, although parliament could later overturn them.

The death penalty can be handed down to child rapists where the victim has died or suffered serious mental or physical injury, while chemical castration can be used in cases of repeat child sex offenders.

Under previous laws, the maximum sentence for rape – including of a minor – was 14 years in jail.

Indonesia has already faced much criticism for its use of capital punishment, sparking outrage last year when it put seven foreign drug convicts to death by firing squad.

The government did not give any further details on the electronic monitoring devices. Local media previously reported that a microchip could be implanted in child sex offenders’ legs on their release from jail.

Wonderla Holidays – In-line quarter; Hyderabad park to spearhead growth

May 26, 2016 by Nasheman

Wonderla Holidays

Wonderla Holidays’ (Wonderla) Q4FY16 revenue came in line with our estimate, while PAT surpassed it riding lower-than-estimated tax rate. Revenue growth was 22.1% YoY with flattish footfalls. EBITDA rose mere 7.9% YoY impacted by higher staff and labour costs (top level hiring and labour cost at new park) and service tax provision. PAT jumped 14.9% YoY to INR76mn as tax rate dipped 376bps QoQ. Wonderla took lower price hike of ~4% in existing parks in FY17 (10% historically) and will compensate it with higher number of peak days. Maintain ‘BUY’.

Mixed footfall trend; price hike impacts college/school crowd
Key highlights: (i) while Bengaluru footfalls rose 6.7% YoY, Kochi posted 8.1% YoY dip; (ii) footfalls were impacted by slowdown in group crowd (~32% of total) which was dented by higher price hikes in FY16 (~23% to counter service tax hike); (iii) EBITDA margin slipped 324bps YoY due to service tax provision of INR47.9mn and higher employee costs; and (iv) resort revenue rose 21.4% YoY with 45% occupancy.

Q4FY16 conference call: Key takeaways
Q1FY17 has seen flattish growth till now. The company estimates 4-5% growth in footfalls in FY17. School and college crowd is also estimated to return in FY17 as the pricing hike is lower. Wonderla has commenced RFID based cashless transactions at Hyderabad Park on trial basis—should be convenient to consumers (expect 50% to shift to this). The company has started operating 1 additional restaurant each at legacy parks, which is estimated to be margin accretive. F&B posted ~45-48% gross margin. Management maintained FY17 footfall guidance of 0.7mn at Hyderabad Park (expects to touch 1mn in 3 years).

Outlook and valuations: Positive; maintain ‘BUY’
Excellent management pedigree, strong brand, new Hyderabad park (commenced on time and received good response) and reasonable pricing place Wonderla in a sweet spot. Ergo, we estimate the company to clock EBITDA CAGR of ~33% over FY16-18. At CMP, the stock is trading at 18.3x and 14.6x FY17E and FY18E EV/EBITDA, respectively. We maintain ‘BUY/SO’ with target price of INR429 (16x FY18E EBITDA).

IPL: KKR eliminated, SRH to face Lions in second qualifier

May 26, 2016 by Nasheman

kkr

New Delhi: Two time champions Kolkata Knight Riders’ campaign in Indian Premier League 9 ended after going down to Sunrisers Hyderabad by 22 runs in the eliminator here on Wednesday.

Famed Hyderabad’s bowling line-up led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar with three wickets, proved too good for the KKR batsmen, who failed to put up a fight to finish at 140/8 in their 20 overs.

Chasing 163, KKR were off an identical start as Hyderabad losing in-form opener Robin Uthappa (11) cheaply before skipper Gautam Gambhir (28) and all-rounder Colin Munroe (16) took the team to 46/1 in the powerplay.

Gambhir and Munroe batted sensibly to put on 38 runs for the second wicket before the New Zealander perished to a silly run out off a sensational throw from Yuvraj Singh.

Playing at his home ground, Gambhir failed to read the bounce of the Kotla track as he miscued a short delivery from Ben Cutting.

With KKR needing 99 from the last 10 overs, the team landed in further trouble as incoming batsman Yusuf Pathan (2) fell to a beautiful running catch from Bhuvneshwar Kumar off Moises Henriques.

Next in Manish Pandey (36) and Suryakumar Yadav (23) batted sensibly to take the team past the 100-run mark by the 14th over.

Yadav, who survived a scare on 15, when pacer Mustafizur Rahman dropped him at the third man boundary, could add only eight runs before a brilliant running catch from Shikhar Dhawan off Henriques ended the 46-run fifth wicket stand.

Requiring 39 from the last three, Pandey, in his attempt to cope with the growing run-rate fell to a miscued shot off Bhuvneshwar after adding only 10 runs with Rajagopal Sathish (8).

With hopes of reaching the second qualifier fading, West Indian Jason Holder (6) joined Sathish but the duo could do little as Bhuvneshwar packed them off in the last over.

Tailenders Sunil Narine and Morne Morkel failed to trouble the scores as the side fell short by 22 runs to bow out of the cash-rich tournament.

For Hyderabad, Bhuvneshwar was the wrecker-in-chief with three wickets while Henriques took two. Cutting and Barinder Sran chipped in with a wicket each.

Earlier, KKR restricted Sunrisers to 162/8 after sending them to bat.

Kuldeep Yadav put up yet another impressive show with three wickets to break the backbone of the Sunrisers batting, who were off to a disappointing start.

Yuvraj (44) and Henriques (31) top-scored for Hyderabad after the side lost the key wicket of in-form opener Dhawan (10) cheaply.

After losing Dhawan, skipper David Warner (28), who was dropped by Pathan in the fifth over, resurrected the innings with incoming batsman Henriques to take the team to 43/1 in the powerplay.

Both the Australians pounced on the easy offerings from the KKR bowlers to raise a 59-run stand for the second wicket before Henriques was brilliantly caught and bowled by Yadav.

With Hyderabad struggling at 71/3 after 10 overs, incoming batsmen Yuvraj and Deepak Hooda (21) took the attack to the opposition with some glorious shots to take the team past the 100-run mark at the start of the 15th over.

The left-right combination went on milking runs at will before the Haryana batter threw away his wicket to a silly run-out ending the 49-run fourth wicket stand.

Coming in next, Aussie all-rounder Cutting failed to trouble the scorers as Yadav packed him with the first ball of his second spell to be beautifully stumped by Uthappa.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Naman Ojha (7) then joined Yuvraj in the middle and the duo added a quickfire 21 runs for the sixth wicket before the Punjab southpaw was clean bowled by Jason Holder.

All-rounder Bipul Sharma (14) hit a couple of lusty sixes off Morne Morkel in the final over to take Hyderabad to 162/8.

For KKR, Yadav was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets while Holder and Morkel chipped in with two wickets each.

The Sunrisers will now take on Gujarat Lions in the second qualifier on Friday for a place in Sunday’s final against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Brief Scores: Sunrisers Hyderabad 162/8 (Yuvraj Singh 44, Moises Henriques 31, David Warner 28, Kuldeep Yadav 3/35) vs Kolkata Knight Riders 140/8 (Manish Pandey 36, Gautam Gambhir 28, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3/19, Moises Henriques 2/19)
