3 madrasa students brutally assaulted for not shouting ‘Jai Mata Di’

March 30, 2016 by Nasheman

Madrasa bharat mata

New Delhi: In another heinous incident that has ashamed humanity, three students of a madrasa were brutally assaulted by a group of saffron extremists in Delhi’s Begumpur area over a trivial issue.

As per reports, Dilkash and his friends, Ajmal and Naeem were strolling in a park when they were thrashed for not saying ‘Jai Mata Di’.

“My friends and I had gone to Bans Wala park, some 300 metres from the madrasa, when we were attacked by a group of young men. They spotted us because we were wearing caps and asked us to say Jai Mata Di,” Dikash was quoted as saying by a news paper.

Meanwhile, some reports claim that the Delhi Police has arrested three people in the incident.

The police registered FIR three days after the incident on charges of assault and wrongful restraint.

“We were waiting for the medico-legal report. The case was registered on the basis of Dilkash’s complaint as he had suffered a fracture. In their complaint, he mentioned that he and his friends were forced to say Jai Mata Di,” the report quoted Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikramjit Singh.

All three victims hail from Bihar’s Purnia district and had come to Delhi in 2015 to study at the Faiz-ul-uloom Ghausia madrasa in Ramesh Enclave’s Mohammadi Masjid.

Violence over petty issues has become rampant in the city. A few days ago a dentist in west Delhi was mercilessly beaten to death by some anti-social elements over a road rage incident.

7 CRPF men killed in Dantewada landmine blast, weapons looted

March 30, 2016 by Nasheman

Dantewada

Raipur: Seven CRPF men were killed today and their weapons looted after Naxals carried out a deadly landmine blast on their vehicle in the jungles of the worst Naxal-affected Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh.

Officials said the incident occurred near the Basaras-Kuakonda axis in the Melawada village in the said district when a Tata-709 mini-truck of the force went over a landmine at about 4 PM and all the seven occupants were killed from the impact of the blast.

The landmine was planted cleverly by Maoists under the ‘black top or puccka’ road and the troops were travelling in a three-vehicle convoy, they said.

The vehicle and the troops were blown to smithereens and a four-feet crater has been created at the place were the blast took place, they said.

They said the troops belonged to the 230th battalion of the force deployed in south Bastar area for anti-Naxal operations.

Preliminary reports said the squad was led by a Sub-Inspector-rank officer and was moving on an administrative task as they were not in uniform.

“All the weapons of the troops have been looted by Naxals. Reinforcement squads have reached the spot,” they said.

Chhattisgarh’s acting Home Minister Ajay Chandrakar also informed in the state Assembly that seven security personnel were killed in the Naxal attack.

“13 year old walks normally first time after deformity correction surgery at Fortis Hospitals”

March 29, 2016 by Nasheman

fortis

Bengaluru: The constant appointments at different hospitals, the disheartening results, difficulty in performing basic routine and with no or little ray of hope left in her to be able to walk normal, little Gaganashree was going through a tough time when she visited Fortis Hospitals, Bannerghatta Road. A six hour long complex surgery by the doctors at Fortis Hospitals gave her a new lease of life and bought her smile back.

It was a painful reality that the little girl faced day in and day out; it put not just physical but also mental stress on the child. Thirteen-year-old Gaganashree found it difficult to carry out even basic activities and daily personal chores because of the deformity in her lower limbs. She had problems walking normally and was distraught because her windswept (waddling) gait embarrassed her and she often had to face discrimination and ridicule in school and outside. She was hardly able to participate in any sporting activity.
With the hope of getting the deformity treated, Gaganashree and her parents made the rounds of many hospitals and visited specialists in the city, but almost everywhere they were told that the teenager’s condition could not be treated because of lack of expertise or she was asked to wait till she grew up and completed her development.

With the hope of getting the deformity treated, Gaganashree and her parents made the rounds of many hospitals and visited specialists in the city, but almost everywhere they were told that the teenager’s condition could not be treated because of lack of expertise or she was asked to wait till she grew up and completed her development.

Finally, she came to Fortis Hospitals, Bannerghatta Road where Orthopaedic specialist performed a specialised deformity correction surgery that helped straighten her lower limbs and ensured that she walked normally.

“The child and her parents came to us after visiting quite a few centres, where they were told that she had a genetic disorder that could not be corrected. We did a detailed evaluation and diagnosed her with a condition called Spondylo-epiphyseal dysplasia, wherein her long bones are not growing normally because the growing ends of her bones were malformed. We informed the parents that the disorder would require complex deformity correction surgery,” said Dr Mohan Puttaswamy, Consultant Reconstructive Orthopaedic Surgeon at Fortis Hospitals.

Spondylo-epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) is a rare, genetic disorder characterised by a malformation of the growing ends of the long bones. The deformity could involve the spine, hips and knees. In Gaganashree, the deformity was seen in the knees, thighbones as well as the leg bones resulting in a windswept gait and difficulty in walking. Such growth deformities also lead to children being shorter than the normally expected height at their age. Stiffness and diminished joint mobility at the knees, elbows, and hips may develop over time.

“She used to rarely get out of the house because of her deformity except for going to school. As her legs were not straight and almost crossed, walking was quite difficult and we were worried about the condition,” says Gaganashree’s elder brother Hemant.

After the evaluation, the Orthopaedic team led by Dr Mohan Puttuswamy formulated a surgical plan according to which a single stage multi-level procedure would be performed. He explained that the 13-year-old’s condition was worsened because not only was she short in stature, but she also had ligament dysfunction in the knee joints. The surgery was planned in such a way that the growing ends of the bones should be preserved and the ligaments in the knees would be tightened.

In a highly complex and challenging surgery, which lasted for six hours, Fortis doctors corrected the deformities in her right femur (thigh bone) and left tibia (shin bone) and her bones were straightened. A special technique called as Open-closed wedge technique was employed so that the length of the right thighbone was not decreased. In the left leg too, a similar strategy was used to avoid shortening of the limb and both her legs were straightened. The loose ligaments in the knee joints were tightened to enable her to walk with stability.

Three months after her surgery, she has made a steady recovery and today Gaganashree is walking straight and tall.

“She is happy to be able to walk normally and is waiting to get outdoors and go to school,” says Hemant.

Over 12 lakh cases pending in Odisha courts

March 29, 2016 by Nasheman

Odisha court

Bhubaneswar: Over 12 lakh cases are pending in different courts in Odisha, including 1.69 lakh cases in the state’s high court, a minister said on Tuesday.

Replying to a question by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Dilip Ray, Law Minister Arun Sahu told the assembly that 12,33,492 cases were pending in the Orissa High Court and lower courts as in December 2015.

A total of 1,30,748 civil cases and 38,705 criminal cases are pending in the Orissa High Court while 2.63 lakh civil cases and over eight lakh criminal cases are pending in the lower courts, the minister added.

The state government has yet to gather information about the pending cases from the state in the Supreme Court.

In response to a question by Biju Janata Dal legislator Prafulla Samal, the law minister said the government was taking steps to fill up the 76 vacant posts of judges in different courts.

Sahu said the government was in the process of setting up courts and Lok Adalats to ensure speedy delivery of justice to people.

The Odisha government has planned to appoint one lawyer at Gram Panchayat level from July this year, Sahu said.

“They will sensitise the people about the welfare programmes of the government besides giving legal advice.”

Will end fast if AFSPA repealed, Sharmila tells court

March 29, 2016 by Nasheman

Irom-Sharmila

Imphal/New Delhi: Rights activist Irom Sharmila, who has been on a fast unto death since November 4, 2000 demanding repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, on Tuesday assured a court in Delhi that she shall call off the fast if the Act is repealed.

Sharmila appeared before Judge H. Singh at the Patiala House Court in a case of attempt to commit suicide during her fast at Jantar Mantar on October 6-7, 2006 soon after being released in Imphal.

She told the jam-packed court room that she loves her life and was merely using her fast as a weapon to achieve her goal.

“It is no crime,” she contended.

“Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, had resorted to fasts while making certain demands,” she told the court.

The district and sessions court in Imphal had earlier found her not guilty of the charge of attempting to commit suicide.

However she was rearrested within a few days as she continued the fast.

Sharmila said she was using the fast “for more impact” in her demand for repealing the AFSPA.

“I am fed up by trials on the same charge again and again,” she said.

“Since there is no meaning of true democracy in the country, human rights activists should join hands. The matter should be brought to the attention of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations,” she said.

Sharmila also reiterated her desire to have a meeting with the prime minister on the AFSPA issue.

She said she had expressed her desire a long time back, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not met her so far.

The hearing will continue on Wednesday.

World T20: Dominant Proteas thrash off-colour Sri Lankans

March 29, 2016 by Nasheman

Proteas

New Delhi: South Africa dominated with both bat and ball to outclass defending champions Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the final Group 1 match of the World Twenty20 at the Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium here on Monday.

Having bowled out the Sri Lankans for a mere 120 runs, the South Africans overhauled the target in 17.4 overs with the veteran Hashim Amla leading the way with a half century.

Amla remained unbeaten on 56 runs off 52 balls with five boundaries and a six.

The result of the match had no bearing on the overall picture of the tournament as both teams had already crashed out of the race for the semi-finals.

The Proteas, who have two wins and as many defeats in the group stage, thus finished their campaign in this edition of the tournament on the high.

The Sri Lankans, on the other hand, will probably heave a sigh of relief as they concluded a disappointing campaign. The defending champions have suffered three defeats with a lone win against minnows Afghanistan.

South African skipper Faf du Plessis elected to field first on winning the toss. His decision proved to be a correct one as the Proteas exploited helpful bowling conditions to bundle out Sri Lanka for a meagre 120 runs.

Farhaan Behardien (2/15), Kyle Abott (2/14) and Aaron Phangiso (2/26) were the pick among the Proteas bowlers while leg-spinner Imran Tahir (1/18) was unlucky not to get more wickets.

Experienced fast bowler Dale Steyn (1/33) surprisingly, gave away quite a few runs, although he did have some consolation in the form of a wicket.

The Sri Lankans were off to a good start with openers Tilakratne Dilshan and Dinesh Chandimal scoring at a brisk pace. Dilshan was the highest scorer among the Sri Lankan batsmen with 36 runs off 40 balls. Chandimal scored 21.

The duo added 45 runs before Chandimal went for a cover drive off Phangiso, only to miss the line as the ball crashed into the stumps. Phangiso then sent back Lahiru Thirimanne off the very next delivery with one that turned in sharply after pitching outside the off stump.

Dilshan and Milinda Siriwardana (15) tried to bring the Sri Lankan innings back on track with a 30-run partnership. But South Africa wrested back the advantage when a superb piece of fielding by Faf du Plesis caught Siriwardana short of his crease.

By the time Dilshan was trapped leg-before while attempting a sweep off Behardien, Sri Lanka were in trouble at 85/5. Dasun Shanaka remained unbeaten on 20 off 18 balls, but the rest of the Lankan tailenders were unable to hold their own against the Proteas bowlers.

The Proteas chase was off to a rocky start as de Kock was run out in the second over thanks to an accurate throw by Dilshan. Amla and du Plessis however, steered South Africa to saftey with a 50-run partnership.

The South Africa captain departed after scoring 31 runs off 36 deliveries, but the experienced AB de Villiers joined Amla in the middle to carry his team to victory.

De Villiers, who remained unbeaten on 20, smashed two sixes in his 12-ball knock and brought up the win by smashing a full toss from Suranga Lakmal over the midwicket fence.

Brief scores:

Sri Lanka 120 in 19.3 overs (Tilakratne Dilshan 36; Farhaan Behardien 2/15, Kyle Abott 2/14, Aaron Phangiso 2/26) vs South Africa 122/2 in 17.4 overs (Hashim Amla 56 n.o., Faf du Plessis 31; Suranga Lakmal 1/28)

“Shaukeen Kaminay is a contemporary film inspired by “Beti Bachao Beti Padao” campaign”

March 29, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Shaukeen Kaminay

Q. What was your thoughtful inspiration behind making Shaukeen Kaminay?

A. To be very honest it has been my dream since the last 3 decades when I joined the film industry in 1986 to make a film which would have a message along with a pure entertainment value.

Q. Did you take it as a challenge to produce a full-length feature film like Shaukeen Kaminay for the very 1st time?

A. I have already worked with the stalwarts like Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani, Manmohan Desai, Prakash Mehra, Ramesh Sippy, Subhash Ghai, B. R. Chopra, Yash Johar, Gulshan Rai, K. K. Pandya, N. Chandra, Kundan Shah, Rajeev Rai, Mansoor Khan, Mani Ratnam, Priyadarshan, Nadiadwala, Vinod Chopra, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Rajkumar Hirani, Sanjay Gupta and many, many more. The past experience helped a lot and the journey eventually was spectacular.

Q. How did the idea germinate in your mind of making a film like Shaukeen Kaminay?

A. You see it so happened that Anil Chorasiya once brought a news headline stating that a man divorced his wife because of her virginity issue which had created a furore & spark in our mind. At that moment I thought what if that man was in the place of the women. This ignited our mind about making a film on virginity which is backed by a social message that why virginity is a privilege for men and justification for women.

Q. What was your motivational inspiration behind making Shaukeen Kaminay?

A. We feel that the film Shaukeen Kaminay is a contemporary film inspired by our honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campagian “Beti Bachao Beti Padao” which works on elevating the status of women in our country and improving the mindset of the society.

Q. Ok so tell us why did you choose Anil Chorasiya only for directing Shaukeen Kaminay?

A. The choice was very clear for Anil Chorasiya who is trained by Hollywood directors and has made varied documentaries, ad films & short films. As Anil Chorasiya has been associated with us for a long time. His creativity, integrity & perseverance have influenced me to assign the direction of the film to him.

Q. Now give us details about the technical crew of Shaukeen Kaminay?

A. The entire cast & technical crew of the team especially the efforts of Atul Yadav & Kunal Singh Rathore are appreciable. I was very happy when our film was instantly liked by our distributor Pradeep Singh of Green Chilli media And films and in its 1st ever preview itself. He has acquired worldwide theatrical rights of the film which is releasing on 29th Apr, 2016.

Q. And any specific reasons for choosing only fresh faces for Shaukeen Kaminay?

A. We required fresh faces only for the film due to its subject of virginity, we hired trained artistes for the film. The performance of the artiste especially Vanshika Gupta & Yasmin Pathan are highly commendable.

Q. So what according to you is the USP of Shaukeen Kaminay?

A. The USP of the film is its social message “aurat ka jab maan badega, bharat ka samman badega”. Besides this the music composed by Rajiv – Mouna & Dharam Dewda. The song “Maahi Re” has became instant hit among the youth.

Q. And what was your experience working as a 1st time ever filmmaker?

A. I got total cooperation from the film industry with whom I have worked for last 30 years. A special mention to Monty Sharma who has scored the background music for the film.

Q. And one last question what is the target audience for the film?

A. This film is specially targeted at the young generation who need guidance & counselling in social & matrimonial relationships because a woman not only gives birth to man but to mankind too.

A suspected gunman was wounded in a shooting on Monday on the US Capitol grounds and taken to hospital, police and congressional sources said.

The shooting occurred in the visitors’ centre of the sprawling Capitol Complex. The White House was briefly put on lockdown, but that was soon lifted.

Police shot the suspect after he pulled a weapon at a US Capitol checkpoint and a female bystander sustained non-life-threatening injuries, the Associated Press reported.

Speaking to reporters after the incident, Capitol Chief of Police Matthew R Verderosa said the suspect was known to officers.

“We do believe this is an act of a single person who has frequented the Capitol grounds before and there is no reason to believe that this is anything more than a criminal act,” Verderosa said.

Initial reports said a police officer sustained minor injuries, but later reports from Capitol officials indicated there was no injury to any law enforcement officers.

The event unfolded with Congress on recess and politicians back in their districts.

FBI breaks into iPhone of dead San Bernadino shooter

March 29, 2016 by Nasheman

US investigators use technique without Apple’s help to hack into phone of dead gunman behind mass California shooting.

fbi-iphone

by Al Jazeera

The FBI says it has successfully used a technique without Apple’s help to hack into the iPhone used by a gunman in a mass shooting in California.

Monday’s announcement effectively ended a pitched court battle between the Obama administration and one of the world’s leading technology companies.

The government asked a federal judge to vacate a disputed order forcing Apple to help the FBI break into the iPhone, saying it was no longer necessary.

The court filing in US District Court for the Central District of California provided no details about how the FBI did it or who showed it how.

The FBI is reviewing the information on the iPhone, the Justice Department said in a statement.

The case drew international attention and highlighted a growing friction between government authorities and the tech industry.

Apple and other tech companies have said they feel increasing need to protect their customers’ data from hackers and unfriendly intruders. But the police and other government authorities have warned that encryption and other data-protection measures are making it more difficult for investigators to track criminals and dangerous extremists.

“From the beginning, we objected to the FBI’s demand that Apple build a back door into the iPhone because we believed it was wrong and would set a dangerous precedent,” Apple said in a statement.

“As a result of the government’s dismissal, neither of these occurred. This case should never have been brought.”

The brief court notice left important questions unanswered: Who showed the FBI how to break into iPhones? How did the government bypass the security features that Apple has invested millions of dollars to build into its flagship product? Are newer iPhones vulnerable to the same hacking technique?

Journalists: please remember that government argued for months that this was impossible, despite expert consensus. pic.twitter.com/7QdkjRKpXg

— Edward Snowden (@Snowden) March 28, 2016

“With this vulnerability in existence, people that have a similar version of iPhone are at risk of attacks from malicious people that could use the same vulnerability,” Drew Mitnick, a Policy Counsel at Access Now, told Al Jazeera.

“[Following the hacking], there is at least a moral obligation on behalf of the FBI to close the vulnerability.”

The surprise development also punctured the temporary perception that Apple’s security might have been good enough to keep consumers’ personal information safe even from the US government – with the tremendous resources it can expend when it wants to uncover something.

The FBI used the technique to access data on an iPhone used by gunman Syed Farook, who died with his wife in a gun battle with police after they killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California, in December.

The iPhone, a work phone issued to Farook by his employer, the county health department, was found in a vehicle the day after the shooting; two personal phones were found destroyed so completely that the FBI couldn’t recover information from them.

US magistrate Sheri Pym of California last month ordered Apple to provide the FBI with software to help it hack into Farook’s work-issued iPhone.

The order touched off a debate pitting digital privacy rights against national security concerns.

“People often have a sense that they are being surveilled by the government and it tends to limit their ability to express themselves,” Mitnick added.

“The mere possibility that the government is surveilling is a limitation on freedom of expression.”

EgyptAir hijack: Cyprus airport hostage drama ends

Hostage drama ends after EgyptAir jet was diverted to Cyprus, amid reports that incident was not politically motivated.

by Al Jazeera

Cyprus’ foreign ministry has reported that the hijacker of an EgyptAir passenger jet has been arrested at the island’s Larnaca airport after a five-hour standoff.

The EgyptAir domestic flight from Alexandria to Cairo was hijacked on Tuesday morning and forced to divert to Cyprus, in an incident that was not politically motivated, the president of Cyprus said.

EgyptAir said flight 181 had 81 people on board, including a crew of seven. Most of them were released shortly after landing in Cyprus.

At around 11:30 GMT, the last seven people were seen leaving the aircraft, one whom escaped though the cockpit window.

Earlier on Tuesday, aviation minister Sherif Fathy at a news conference in Cairo said three foreign passengers were still on board, together with the pilot and co-pilot, one flight attendant and an air marshal.

Initial reports said that the pilot of the plane was threatened by a passenger strapped with explosives, but Fathy said this has not been confirmed.

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said the hijacker seemed to have a personal motive and that the incident was “not related to terrorism”.

Negotiations with the Hijacker result in the release of all the passengers, except the crew and four foreigners.

— EGYPTAIR (@EGYPTAIR) March 29, 2016

The plane was an Airbus 320, Egypt’s aviation ministry said. An official with flight-tracking website FlightRadar24 said the plane showed no immediate signs of distress. The flight between Alexandria and Cairo normally takes about 30 minutes.

The ministry said in a statement that pilot Omar al-Gammal had informed authorities that he was threatened by a passenger who possessed a suicide belt and forced him to land in Larnaca.

Cyprus foreign ministry identified the hijacker as Seif Eldin Mustafa and said it could not confirm the man was rigged with explosives.

Cyprus state TV said that the hijacker wanted to contact his ex-wife, who is Greek-Cypriot and lives in Larnaca.

Witnesses told Cyprus Mail newspaper that the he threw a letter on the apron of the airport in Larnaca, written in Arabic, asking that it be delivered to his ex-wife.

Other media outlets in Cyprus reported he first asked to be taken to Istanbul but that the pilot refused this demand.

CYBC said the airplane was parked at an apron at Larnaca airport. The hijacker asked police to back away from the aircraft, it said.

Egypt’s vital tourism industry was already reeling from the crash of a Russian passenger plane in the Sinai in late October.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has said it was brought down by an attack. Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) has said it planted a bomb, killing all 224 people on board.

Cyprus has seen little militant activity for decades, despite its proximity to the Middle East.

A botched attempt by Egyptian commandos to storm a hijacked airliner at Larnaca airport led to the disruption of diplomatic relations between Cyprus and Egypt in 1978.
