Dr. Zakir Naik Denies Reports of Saudi Citizenship

May 20, 2017 by Nasheman

zakir naik

Dr. Zakir Naik has denied media reports that claimed that he had been granted Saudi citizenship to evade arrest by Interpol.

Dr. Naik has rubbished the reports saying that, “It (news if Saudi citizenship) is false, unless Allah wills. This is how the media even prints gossip as facts.”

According to Middle East Monitor, Dr. Naik had been granted citizenship in Saudi Arabia, by King Salman.

Dr. Naik is wanted in India after a Facebook post surfaced, of one of the attackers involved in the Dhaka terror attack last year, in which he had shared Dr. Naik’s speech.

Last month, India approached the Interpol to issue a ‘Red Corner Notice’ against Dr. Naik. A Red Corner Notice ensures that Dr. Naik will be declared an international fugitive and can be arrested by any law enforcing agency.

Dr. Naik is believed to be living either in Saudi Arabia or the UAE, while moving between Malaysia and Indonesia, according to intelligence agencies.

Designing a career in the jewellery trade

May 19, 2017 by Nasheman

by Mohammed Mansoor Khan

Jewellery design involves a blend of the arts, science and commerce

The World Gold Council (WGC) estimates that the Indian jewellery market is worth around Rs.70,000 crore ($16 billion). The urban jewellery market is valued at Rs. 28,000 crore ($6.4 billion), while the rural and semi-urban market is valued Rs.42,000 crore ($9.6 billion). In a nation like India, where the jewellery market witnesses continuous transformation in the designing area, the talent requirement of the industry is highly exponential.

BLEND OF COMMERCE AND SCIENCE

Often students who want to pursue careers related to designing; be it jewellery, fash ion, interiors or any other format, presume that it is a subject matter of Arts; For those who want to chart a prosperous career trajectory in the jewellery designing industry, it is essential to understand that though it is founded on Arts, it can be developed only if one also invests in the commercial and scientific aspects of the trade.

In this day and age, no specialization can flourish in silos. If a student has great jewellery designing skills alone, which of course is the fundamental criterion, and may not be well versed with the commerce of it which involves an understanding of the potential markets for the product, the market dipstick, the demand situation, industry trends or for that matter selling proposition of the product, then, however beautiful the product may be, it will not receive the due that its merits.

Science also lays a quintessential role in jewellery designing. Understanding of metallurgy, the chemical compositions behind the forming of precious and semi-precious stones, the reaction of stones to various temperatures and metals, the reaction of metals in various temperatures, the choosing and valuation of diamonds and stones, etc, all play a critical role in defining a progressive career in jewellery designing. Most importantly, this is the only skill that will enable one to function efficiently with workers on the shop-floor where there is high attrition.

THE TECH SIDE

Having an eye for technolo gy is also an essential factor as all designing and work is being done on 3D and graphic software.

Therefore, students who look forward to establishing themselves in this industry need to start with making the right choice of enrolling into a recognised university or programme offering such a multi-dimensional approach.

RESEARCH EFFORT

The golden rule of, `Practise makes perfect“, applies to this trade as well. During a student’s academic days, efforts have to be channelled towards research.Works of established designers need to be studied and interpreted.

INDUSTRY CONNECT

Internships and industry ex posure is the technique that students should expose themselves to most. This will not only help groom their ex isting skills but help chalkout the direction they want to take. It can either be that of a freelancer, work for cor porate, or a start-up of one’s own jewellery-line.

Besides being able to tread on this route, it helps if one possesses a keen inherent sense of the aesthetics.

Sweden drops Julian Assange rape investigation

May 19, 2017 by Nasheman

UK police say Assange will still be arrested for ‘minor offence’ if he left Ecuadorian embassy where he is holed up.

Swedish prosecutors on Friday dropped a rape investigation into Julian Assange, the founder of anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks, bringing to an end a seven-year legal stand-off.

Yet, British police said he would still be arrested if he left the Ecuadorean embassy in the UK capital, London, where he has been holed up since 2012.

Assange, 45, took refuge there to avoid extradition to Sweden amid fears that he would have been handed over to the US to face prosecution over the publication of classified military and diplomatic documents by WikiLeaks.

“The investigation is discontinued,” Marianne Ny, the director of public prosecution, told reporters in Sweden’s capital, Stockholm.

“In order to proceed with the case, Julian Assange would have to be formally notified of the criminal suspicions against him. We cannot expect to receive assistance from Ecuador regarding this,” Ny said.

“We are not making a statement about his guilt.”

‘Very pleased’

Christophe Marchand, a member of Assange’s legal team, welcomed the suspension of the investigation as “the end of his nightmare”.

“We have been waiting a long time for this decision,” he said, adding: “Julian Assange has been a victim of a huge abuse of procedure. We are very pleased and very moved”.

Yet, British police said he would still be arrested if he left the Ecuadorean embassy in the UK capital, London, where he has been holed up since 2012.

Shortly after the announcement, Assange posted a picture of himself smiling broadly, without comment.

Later on Friday, British police said separately they would still arrest Assange if he walked out of the embassy because he had broken his conditions for bail by failing to surrender on June 29, 2012 for extradition to Sweden.

“Now that the situation has changed and the Swedish authorities have discontinued their investigation into that matter, Mr Assange remains wanted for a much less serious offence,” it said in a statement.

“The Metropolitan Police Service is obliged to execute that warrant should he leave the Embassy.”

In a Twitter post, WikiLeaks said the UK has refused to comment whether it has received a US warrant to extradite Assange, and added: “Focus now moves to UK”.

‘It’s a scandal’

The rape accusation against Assange dates from August 2010 when an alleged victim, who says she met him at a WikiLeaks conference in Stockholm a few days earlier, filed a complaint.

She said she was “shocked” by the Swedish prosecutors’ decision to drop the investigation, according to her lawyer.

“It is a scandal that a suspected rapist can escape justice and thereby avoid the courts … no decision to (end the case) can make her change that Assange exposed her to rape,” Elisabeth Fritz, the plaintiff’s lawyer, said in a statement.

Assange, however, has repeatedly reiterated his innocence and said the sex was consensual, insisting that the accusations are “politically motivated”.

The probe has suffered from endless procedural complications since it began in 2010.

Per Samuelsson, Assange’s Swedish lawyer, last month filed a new motion demanding that the arrest warrant be lifted after US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in April that arresting Assange would be “a priority”.

In a letter sent to the Swedish government on May 8, Ecuador condemned “the obvious lack of progress” despite Swedish officials questioning Assange at the embassy in November 2016.

“The Ecuadorian government have been putting pressure on the Swedes to bring about some sort of solution to this long-running stand-off,” Al Jazeera’s Neave Barker, reporting from London, said.

The probe was dropped “largely on a technicality,” he said. Prosecutors “simply cannot continue with the case because they cannot serve Assange with the necessary documents to do so, rather than a belief on whether he’s guilty or not.”

Barker added that the US was preparing to press charges against Assange.

“We believe the sealed indictment has been prepared, although we don’t know what is in it,” he said.

“The Obama administration felt charges couldn’t be brought and things were very much in flux and they seem to be in flux even now.”

A UN panel has said that Assange had been “arbitrarily detained” and should be able to claim compensation from Britain and Sweden. The two countries have dismissed the report.

Assange, who is Australian, was granted asylum by Ecuador and has been able to evade justice because he is on Ecuador’s sovereign territory by being in the embassy.

Hockey: New Zealand beat Indian eves 3-0 in fourth match

May 19, 2017 by Nasheman

Indian Women Hockey

Hamilton: The Indian senior women’s hockey team put up a fair performance in their 0-3 loss to New Zealand in the penultimate match of the five-match series here on Friday.

India made a strong start with an improvised attack, attempting shot on goal but the Black Sticks defence continued to be too strong to be beaten.

Meanwhile, the hosts found an opportunity in the 14th minute with a quick-thinking Rachael McCann who pumped the ball into the goal clinching an early 1-0 lead in the first quarter to put India under pressure.

Following three successive 4-1, 8-2 and 3-2 wins in the first three matches, New Zealand looked to dominate.

Tessa Jopp fetched the host team their second goal in the 17th minute. New Zealand earned a penalty corner which was successfully converted by Jopp.

Down by two goals, the Indian strikers made strong amends trying different variations at converting a goal but could not break the Black Sticks defence.

In-form Rachael McCann struck her second goal of the match in the 26th minute to take New Zealand’s lead to a comfortable 3-0 at the end of half-time.

The final two quarters saw Indian keeper Rajani Etimarpu stay busy at the post, defending the attempts on goal made by New Zealand.

She made some impressive saves to keep the hosts from taking a further lead. The Indian defence too stitched together a well-structured strategy to ensure a goalless third and fourth quarter.

While India had dominated with the ball possession (57 per cent as opposed to New Zealand’s 43 per cent) in their previous game where they lost 2-3, New Zealand came up with new tactics to deny India any such advantage.

The final quarter too saw India make strong attempts on goal and comeback into the game but New Zealand stayed in control to win the match 3-0.

ED files money laundering case against Karti Chidambaram, Mukerjeas, others

May 19, 2017 by Nasheman

karti chidambaram

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has registered a money laundering case against Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, and others, taking cognisance of a recent Central Bureau of Investigation FIR against them.

Officials said the central probe agency registered an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), ED’s equivalent of a police FIR, against the accused named in the CBI complaint including Karti, INX media and its directors, Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, and others.

The ECIR has been registered under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said.

They said the ED will probe the alleged “proceeds of crime” generated in this case and may also attach assets of the various accused.

It is the ED which had provided information about the alleged illegal payments made by INX media, based on which the CBI had filed its FIR.

The CBI, on Tuesday, had carried out searches at the homes and offices of Karti across four cities for allegedly receiving money from the media firm owned by the Mukerjeas to scuttle a tax probe.

The Chidambarams had denied all the charges made against them.

The CBI had filed an FIR against Karti and the Mukerjeas on charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, receiving illegal gratification, influencing public servants and criminal misconduct.

It is alleged that Karti received money from INX Media for using his influence to manipulate a tax probe against it in a case of violation of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) conditions to receive investment from Mauritius.

The CBI had also recovered vouchers of Rs 10 lakh which were allegedly paid for the services.

These vouchers were issued in favour of Advantage Strategic Consulting (P) Limited, a firm “indirectly” owned by Karti, the CBI had alleged.

The senior Chidambaram, after the CBI searches on May 16, had issued a strong statement in response to the raids saying that the government was using the CBI and other agencies to target his son.

FIPB approval was granted in “hundreds of cases”, the senior Congress leader had said.

The CBI FIR was made out against Karti, his company Chess Management Services, the Mukerjeas (currently in jail on charges of murder their daughter Sheena Bora), INX Media, Advantage Strategic Consulting Services and its director Padma Vishwanathan.

IPL: Kolkata wins rain-interrupted game by 7 wickets

May 18, 2017 by Nasheman

KKR wins rain-interrupted game by 7 wickets against defending champions SRH. (PTI)

KKR wins rain-interrupted game by 7 wickets against defending champions SRH. (PTI)

Bengaluru: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Gautam Gambhir led from the front to knock defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a seven-wicket win and made to Qualifier 2 in a rain-interrupted eliminator clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Thursday.

KKR will take on Mumbai Indians on Friday at the same venue.

Chasing 48 to win in six overs after rain and wet outfield ate up a large chunk of playing time, forcing Duckworth-Lewis method to come into play, Gambhir steadied the ship after KKR were 12/3 at one stage with an unbeaten 19-ball 32.

Ishank Jaggi, playing his first match, was not out on five.

At the start, Chris Lynn was on the money right away, smacking Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a six in the first ball he faced.

But the second ball saw the destructive Australian get out after replays showed Lynn had edged to wicketkeeper Naman OJha off a Bhuveshwar near-yorker.

Yusuf Pathan, promoted up the order to score at a brisk pace, lasted just one delivery before he was run out. Robin Uthappa did not last long too, holing out to Shikhar Dhawan at deep mid wicket off Chris Jordan’s bowling.

Earlier, KKR rode on a superlative show by their bowlers to restrict Sunrisers Hyderabad to 128/7 in 20 overs.

None of the Hyderabad batsmen could score a half century, with skipper David Warner managing only 37 off 35 balls as the highest score of the innings.

Nathan Coulter-Nile (3/20) was the pick of the bowlers while Umesh Yadav (2/21) continued his good show as the two-time IPL champions made the most of the slow Chinnaswamy wicket to keep Warner and company in check.

Coulter-Nile leaked just three runs from the penultimate over with Trent Boult (1/30) allowing just seven in the final over also taking the wicket of Naman Ojha (16) off the final ball.

Hyderabad got off to a sedate start, managing just 30/1 in the Powerplay. In-form Shikhar Dhawan (11; 13b; 1×4) skied a rising Umesh delivery for wicket-keeer Robin Uthappa to pouch the ball.

Warner, in red-hot form, found the fence just twice in the first six overs with Dhawan pulling Umesh for another boundary before falling to his India teammate couple of overs later.

It took the generally explosive Warner eight overs to hit the first six of the match, punishing a poor Piyush Chawla ball by rocking on to his backfoot and pulling the leg-spinner to deep midwicket. At the halfway stage, the defending champions were 61/1.

With Shah Rukh Khan in attendance, the men in purple did well to put a lid on Hyderabad’s run flow.

Umesh and Boult bowled brilliantly in the first 10 overs with the pair conceding 16 runs in three overs and 10 runs in two overs respectively.

Fit-again Coulter-Nile looked in good shape too, taking the wicket of New Zealand captain Kane Williamson (24; 26b; 2×4, 1×6) who hit a good length delivery outside off stump straight to Suryakumar Yadav — playing in place of injured Manish Pandey — at extra cover.

In the next over, leg-spinner Piyush Chawla — drafted in for Colin de Grandhomme — scalped the priced wicket of Warner who saw his middle stump uprooted trying to pull a back of a length delivery.

Yuvraj Singh (9; 9b; 2×4) struck two good looking boundaries but fell to Umesh’s guile, pulling a bouncer straight down the throat of Piyush at deep square leg.

With the ball not coming on to the bat, Hyderabad batsmen could never get going. Vijay Shankar and Naman Ojha eked out an expensive over from Boult taking the Kiwi pacer for 13 runs.

But Shankar was out soon with Coulter-Nile taking his wicket only to pull off a superb catch off his own bowling to sent Chris Jordan back in the hut for a golden duck.

NIDDHI AGERWAL ON A HOUSE HUNT!

After a nationwide talent hunt, director Sabbir Khan finally found his leading lady for his next film, MUNNA MICHAEL, starring Tiger Shroff. Niddhi Agerwal who is a professional ballet dancer, happened to be selected quite by accident but was immediately signed thanks to her screen presence & charisma, not to mention her acting talent & dancing skills. The debutante may have received a warm welcome from the film industry but unfortunately was forced to move out of her flat in the suburbs, as the housing society raised objections to her “single actress” status. Society boards are generally wary of letting out flats to aspiring actors, leaving Niddhi Agerwal no choice but to hunt for a new apartment. She says, “I have lived with my friend for nearly 6 months. Now, hunting for a new place seems an impossible task. Because I am single & an actress, I have been denied accommodation. As of now, that’s the biggest hurdle that I have faced here.”

PATRALEKHAA JOINS RAJKUMMAR & HANSAL MEHTA FOR A WEBSERIES!!!!!

Patralekhaa is all geared up to work again with Hansal Mehta for a web series that stars Rajkummar Rao as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. She will be portraying the role of an elitist Bengali. “I am thrilled to be a part of the project. Recently, I happened to discuss Bose with a friend, who wrote a book on him, and now I am doing a role in a show based on him. I’m happier to do the show, as I am playing a Bengali”. The trio will work together for the 1st time ever after CITYLIGHTS. The actor is not only excited about working with Hansal Mehta again, but also Rajkummar. “Getting to work with Rajkummar as a co – star is exciting. He brings in so much more to a scene, that it develops it into something else. Hansal sir has never cast me without following a procedure. During CITYLIGHTS, I gave an audition and this time, I did a look test. It is always a delight to work with him. Hansal Mehta gives actors a lot of liberty and allows actors to use their imagination and take a scene forward. I miss this freedom in my space of work.” Patralekhaa feels the web is the future, but there are many challenges that we need to overcome to reach the optimum level”.
