File vision document for protection of Taj Mahal: SC to UP govt

February 9, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Uttar Pradesh government to file within four weeks a vision document for protection and preservation of the Taj Mahal.

The apex court also directed the state government to explain why there was a sudden flurry of activities in and around the Taj Mahal and the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) and why leather industries and hotels were coming up there.

TTZ is an area of about 10,400 sq kms spread over the districts of Agra, Firozabad, Mathura, Hathras and Etah in Uttar Pradesh and Bharatpur in Rajasthan.

“You file the vision document within four weeks,”a bench comprising Justices M B Lokur and Deepak Gupta said.

“There is sudden flurry of activities in TTZ. Is there any particular reason for that? Leather industries and hotels are coming up there. Why? the bench asked Additional Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta, who was appearing for the state.

Mehta told the top court that he would get instructions on this issue and get back to it.

Meanwhile, the state government filed a separate application for cutting 234 trees for laying pipelines for water supply in Agra city.

The bench, however, directed the state to apprise it as how many tress have already been planted in the TTZ and posted the matter for hearing after four weeks.

The top court had earlier said that “ad hoc” measures were not enough to preserve the Taj Mahal for “a few hundred years” and directed the state government to prepare a document with a futuristic vision to protect the historic 17th century mausoleum for future generations.

Environmentalist M C Mehta, who had filed a plea seeking protection of the Taj from the ill-effects of polluting gases and deforestation in and around the area, had earlier told the bench that the TTZ was an “ecologically sensitive area” and the government should have come out with a comprehensive policy for preservation and protection of the Taj.

The apex court, which is dealing with Mehta’s petition, has been monitoring development in the area to protect the Taj Mahal, built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal in 1631. The mausoleum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Judge Loya death: Opposition meets President, demands court-monitored probe

February 9, 2018 by Nasheman

A delegation of Opposition MPs, including Congress president Rahul Gandhi, met President Ram Nath Kovind on February 9 to petition him for a court-monitored SIT probe into the death of CBI judge Judge B.H. Loya.

After the meeting Mr. Gandhi said that MPs were uneasy over the death of the judge and two others and wanted an independent probe. However, the probe should not be carried out by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The Opposition had been saying that there was a need to know how Justice Loya died as there are “many theories” going around and only a Supreme Court-monitored SIT can “solve the issue”.

Justice Loya, who was hearing the sensitive Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, had died of cardiac arrest in Nagpur on December 1, 2014, when he had gone to attend the wedding of a colleague’s daughter.

The issue came under the spotlight in November 2017 after media reports quoting his sister fuelled suspicion about the circumstances surrounding his death and its link to the Sohrabuddin case.

Kohli’s 34th ODI ton propels India to 303/6 in 3rd match

February 8, 2018 by Nasheman

Skipper Virat Kohli slammed his 34th One-day International ton to help India post a competitive 303/6 against South Africa, even as the visitors’ untested middle order failed to click in the third of the six-match ODI series, at Newlands here on Wednesday.

Continuing his glorious run in the tour, Kohli (160 not out off 159 balls; 4X12, 6X2), who slammed 112 and 46 not out in the first two ODIs, shouldered the Indian innings single-handedly to power his team to a huge total in anticipation that the visitors register a historic 3-0 lead on South African soil.

Barring the 139-run second wicket stand with opener Shikhar Dhawan (73 off 63; 4X12), Kohli received very little support from the other batsmen, before tailender Bhuvneshwar Kumar (16 off 19; 4X1) chipped in to add an unbeaten 67 runs for the seventh wicket.

Put in to bat, India were immediately on the backfoot with opener Rohit Sharma (0) continuing his struggle at the top of the order, before Kohli and Dhawan joined forces to take the attack to the opposition.

Kohli started off vulnerably, escaping an lbw call on nought off Kagiso Rabada, thanks to a huge inside edge but settled down quickly to launch the counter attack.

Dhawan, at the other end, continued his merciless attack on the home bowlers, to bring up his 25th ODI fifty off 42 balls with a boundary off leg-spinner Imran Tahir.

South Africa’s frustration was evident from the fact that the Indian pair went on to better their own record (93 runs) of the highest partnership for the second wicket against the Proteas.

Just when the Indian pair started looking invincible, part-time off-spinner Jean Paul Duminy came to the rescue of the hosts with the crucial wicket of Dhawan, who chipped wide off midwicket only to be latched on by stand-in captain Aiden Markram.

Duminy jolted India once again with the wicket of No.4 Ajinkya Rahane (11), before all-rounder Hardik Pandya (14), Mahendra Singh Dhoni (10) and Kedar Jadhav (1) made their way back in quick succession.

In the middle of all the drama, Kohli kept his calm to bring up his 34th ODI century off 119 balls, when he flicked Duminy behind leg for two runs.

Precariously placed at 236/6, India could hardly dream of a total past 300, but Bhuvneshwar Kumar repeated his feats of the Test series and gave Kohli the license to hammer the South Africans at will.

For the hosts, Duminy was the pick of the bowlers returning 2/60, while Rabada, Chris Morris, Andile Phehlukwayo and Tahir chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Brief Scores: India 303/6 (Virat Kohli 160 not out, Shikhar Dhawan 76, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 16 not out; J.

P. Duminy 2/60) vs South Africa.

Veteran Bengali Actress Supriya Devi No More

February 8, 2018 by Shaheen Raaj

Veteran Bengali film actress Supriya Devi, who reached legendary heights for her portrayal of the protagonist Neeta in Ritwik Ghatak’s cult movie Meghe Dhaka Tara, died at her residence here recently, following a massive cardio – respiratory failure, her physician said.

She was cremated in the evening with full state honours given by the West Bengal Government.

Supriya Devi, 85, is survived by her daughter & 3 grandchildren.

“She felt unwell in the washroom around 6.20 am. When doctors were called, they declared her dead at 6.30 am,” the family physician said.

Supriya Devi’s body was taken from her home to the Rabindra Sadan compound, where 100’s, amongst them leading cultural & political personalities, including Chief Minister Mamata Bannerjee, paid their last respects.

The last journey had begun around 6.15 pm, with a barefoot Mamta Banerjee walking 3.5 km alongside a large number of mourners to the Keoratala crematorium, where the coffin was taken out of the cortege and placed on a high platform by police personnel in a slow march.

The bugle played the last post before she was accorded a guard of honor & a gun salute, as soulful Rabindra Sangeet played in the background.

Born on 8th Jan, 1933 at Myitkyina in erstwhile Burma now Myanmar, Supriya Chowdhury took the screen name Supriya Devi to emerge as one of the leading figures of the Golden era of Bengali cinema that saw her straddle the celluloid space with great aplomb alongside the Late Uttam Kumar Kumar & the Late Suchitra Sen.

Soumitra Chatterjee, Sabitri Chatterjee & Madhabi Mukherjee now remain amongst the few surviving representatives of that generation.

Supriya Devi was one of the leading heroines of Uttam Kumar, her live – in partner, and essayed memorable romantic roles opposite him through 2 and a half decades.
The duo’s mega hit movies included Sanyasi Raja, Baghbandi Khela, Chirodiner, Sabarmati, Suno Baranari, Bon Palashir Padavali, Kalankini Kankabati & Sudhu Ekti Bachar.

Apart from the Uttam Kumar – Suchitra Sen combine, it was the Uttam Kumar – Supriya Devi pairing that kept generations of Bengali film buffs mesmerised with their romance, hit songs on their lips & well – scripted story – lines.

She also acted in a few Hindi films like Begaana, Door Gagan Ki Chaon Mein & Aap Ki Parchhaiyan.

Known for her beauty & sharp features, she made her acting debut as a 7 year old in 2 plays directed by her father Gopal Chandra Banerjee, and forayed into films in 1952 playing a side part in the Uttam Kumar starrer Basu Parbar.

It was in 1959 that she rose to prominence after her appearance in the runaway hit movie Sonar Harin, which also featured Uttam Kumar. The year 1960 gave Supriya Devi a cult status following her sensitive & touching depiction of the sole bread earner of a refugee family against the backdrop of the 1947 partition of India in Meghe Dhaka Tara (Cloud Capped Star).

Her heart rending cries “Dada Ami Kintu Banchte Cheyechilam… Dada Ami Banchbo… Dada Ami Banchbo” (Brother, I just wanted to live… brother, I want to live… brother, I want to live)”, that broke the serenity of a tuberculosis sanatorium, echoing through its natural surroundings, is regarded as a classic celluloid silver screen scene. She came up with another spectacular performance in Ritwik Ghatak’s Komal Gandhar in 1961.

Amongst her other popular films are Debdas (1979), where she was cast as Chandramukhi opposite Soumitra Chatterjee in the title role, Jadi Jantem, Amarapali, Chowranghee, Sabyasachi, Dui Purush, Mon Niye & Atmiyo Swajan.

In 2006, she made her last appearance on the big celluloid silver screen in Mira Nair’s The Namesake.

In 1954, Supriya Devi married Biswanath Choudhary. The couple’s only daughter is Soma. However, later in life, Supriya Devi fell in love with Uttam Kumar.

Supriya Devi was conferred the Padma Shri in 2014, and received the Bengal Film Journalists’ Award twice, for Tin Adhyay (“Best Actress” in 1969) & Chinnapatra (“Best Supporting Actress” in 1973).

The State Government bestowed its highest award Banga Vibhushan in 2011 on her.
President Ram Nath Kovind led the nation in condoling Supriya Devi’s demise. Calling her an icon of Indian cinema & of Bengal’s cultural life, Kovind said she would be “remembered for memorable films such as Meghe Dhaka Tara”.

Mamata Banerjee averred, “She was a legendary actress. She was like a family member to us… We will fondly remember her through her films. Condolences to her family & fans.”

Soumitra Chatterjee, 2 years junior to Supriya Devi, was heartbroken. “I have nothing to say. I am also 83 now. For 60 years she was my friend & colleague. We worked together in so many films. I feel very sad & heartbroken.”

Film maker Sujoy Ghosh tweeted: “RIP Supriya Devi… I was, am and, always will be your fan”.

Triple talaq bill has many ‘flaws’, says AIMPLB

February 8, 2018 by Nasheman

Hyderabad: A top body of Muslim clerics today said there are many “flaws” in the triple talaq bill proposed by the NDA government and vowed to work towards removing them. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) claimed efforts are being made to enact a “very wrong law”.

“There is no such law in the whole world… an effort is being made to make a very wrong law. There are other such flaws. The Muslim Personal Law Board’s stand is to get those flaws removed,” AIMPLB spokesperson Moulana Khaleel-ur-Rehman Sajjad Nomani said.

He was talking to reporters on the eve of the 26th Annual General Meeting of the board to be held here for three days. The AIMPLB spokesperson, however, said the board is not opposed to the bill but want the flaws removed.

The board requested all opposition parties to consider whether the bill can be passed in its present form. The triple talaq bill has already been passed in the Lok Sabha and but it is yet to get a nod in the Rajya Sabha, where the BJP-led NDA lacks a majority.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017, criminalises instant talaq and provides for up to three years of imprisonment for accused Muslim men. Nomani alleged the bill in its present form would ban the institution of talaq itself.

“It is generally publicised that this bill is presented to stop triple talaq. But, the fact is, if you read the bill, this bill is to ban the entire institution of talaq,” Nomani said. The bill also enables any person from anywhere to complain against a Muslim man vis-a-vis divorce, he alleged.

The meeting of the board would firm up future course of action on the triple talaq issue and also the Ayodhya matter, he said. Replying to a query, Nomani said the board has not received any official or unofficial proposal to resolve the decades-old Ayodhya issue.
