AAP submits video ‘evidence’ of assault on MLAs to Delhi Police

February 26, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Senior Aam Aadmi Party leaders Sanjay Singh and Ashutosh met Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik here on Monday and submitted video “evidence” of an assault on two AAP MLAs a few days back.

After handing over the videos to the police, Singh told the media that they have been assured of police action against the perpetrators.

Ashish Khetan and Imran Hussein were allegedly heckled and their party volunteers thrashed by a mob inside the Delhi Secretariat on February 20, after Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash alleged that he was assaulted by party MLAs at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence the night before.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Police told a court that CCTV cameras at the Chief Minister’s house were tampered with.

In response to which, Singh said: “CCTV cameras come under the supervision of the police. Delhi Police should be questioned if they were tampered with.”

Sridevi died from accidental drowning in bathtub: Report

February 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Dubai: Indian actress Sridevi died due to accidental drowning in a bath tub in her hotel here, reports gulfnews.com.

Sharing the image of the forensic report, the media publication stated that Sridevi, who had traces of alcohol in her blood, lost balance and fell into the bathtub and drowned.

Sridevi, 54, died on Saturday night. It was earlier reported that she died due to cardiac arrest.

According to sources, Dubai Police have released the forensic report on Sridevi’s death to her family and the Indian Consulate representative.

IANS could not confirm the details of the forensic report.

The Padma Shri recipient was in Dubai to attend the marriage function of actress Sonam Kapoor’s cousin Mohit Marwah, along with husband Boney Kapoor and younger daughter Khushi.

Born in Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu on August 13, 1963, Sridevi began her career at the age of four in the devotional film “Thunaivan”. That marked the beginning of a journey in filmdom that saw her work across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi productions, leading her to become one of the most formidable actresses of the 1980s and 1990s in Bollywood — in fact, the only female “superstar” the industry has seen.

Mulbagal MLA G Manjunath accused of producing ‘false’ caste certificate by Dalit organisations

February 26, 2018 by Nasheman

Mulbagal: Leaders of a number of Dalit organisations have accused Mulbagal MLA G. Manjunath of producing ‘false’ caste certificate.

The organisations have accused the minister of ‘falsely’ stating that he belongs to the ‘Budaga Jangama’ caste. They have also charged the minister of coercing Mulbagal tahsildar to issue a similar certificate to his brother G. Venkataramana.

They alleged: “The legislator is pressuring the authorities concerned to issue a false caste certificate to his brother even before his (Manjunath’s) issue is settled in court.”

“Some influential sections of society and wealthy people are grabbing the constitutionally guaranteed facilities meant for Scheduled Castes and Tribes by getting false caste certificates,” alleged R. Srinivasan, former president of zilla panchayat.

In his defence, Mr. Manjunath has filed a petition declaring that the said certificate dated 03.04.2012 is valid and legal.

UN delays vote on Syria ceasefire as death toll climbs to 470

More than 470 people killed in Eastern Ghouta as UNSC postpones vote due to disagreements over resolution’s wording.

by Al Jazeera

As the death toll in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta surpasses 470, a UN Security Council vote on a draft resolution seeking a 30-day ceasefire across the country has been postponed until later on Saturday.

The vote had already been delayed several times, as council members tried to convince Russia to agree to a resolution.

More than 470 people, including 150 children, have been killed in the Damascus suburb since Sunday, according to UK-based The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

Another 2,330 people have been wounded, SOHR said on Friday evening. Dozens of other people were missing “under the rubble”, it added, as Russian-backed Syrian forces continued their aerial assault on the rebel-held enclave, home to some 400,000 people.

Eastern Ghouta is the last remaining rebel-held area east of Damascus and has been under siege by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces since 2013.

The draft UNSC resolution, sponsored by Kuwait and Sweden, is aimed at implementing a ceasefire to allow aid delivery and the evacuation of civilians from the besieged suburb.

Al Jazeera’s Diplomatic Editor James Bays, reporting from the UN headquarters in New York, said on Friday that the ongoing delay was due to a disagreement between Russia and other Security Council members over the latest version of the resolution.

“There were certainly changes made [to the resolution] on Thursday after the Security Council meeting,” he said.

“They [Security Council members] changed some of the language.”

The UN special envoy for Syria, Steffan de Mistura, stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire to stop the “horrific heavy bombardment of Eastern Ghouta and the indiscriminate mortar shelling on Damascus”.

Russian UN ambassador Vassily Nebenzya had said there was “no agreement” and presented amendments to the draft resolution “for it to be realistic”, while the Syrian ambassador to the UN, Basher al-Jaafari, accused the international body and mainstream media of backing “terrorists recruited by the US from all over the world” to fight in Syria.

In response, Nikki Hailey, the US ambassador to the UN, called Russia’s actions as “unbelievable” on Twitter.

The “relentless” shelling, coupled with live artillery fire, has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation amid the ongoing siege.

The blockade has prevented basic necessities, such as food and medicine, from entering the enclave. The siege has also resulted in huge inflation of the cost of basic goods. A bag of bread now costs the equivalent of $5.

In addition, malnutrition rates have reached unprecedented levels, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Earlier this week, the UN and other international bodies expressed outrage at the number of civilian casualties. The UN called for an “immediate” stop to the “escalation” of violence.

Hundreds of thousands of people have died in fighting during Syria’s seven-year civil war, and millions have been forced to flee the country.
