CM Siddaramaiah suffers minor injury after fall from chair, party workers panic

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah suffered a minor head injury after he slipped and fell off his chair while he was seated for lunch at a party leader’s house here in Mavinahalli on April 2.

Siddaramaiah who was in Mysuru for campaigning in his Chamundeshwari constituency had left for lunch at a Congress party leader’s house in Mavinahalli. While he was seated along with former MLA Sathyanarayana and lawyer friend Mavinahalli Siddegowda for lunch, he slipped and fell off from the plastic chair. Fortunately he suffered only minor injuries.

Immediately his security personnel rushed to his help. Even the party workers present also panicked for a while and were in tears on witnessing him fall. Siddaramaiah’s son Yathindra who is a doctor, on learning about the incident, also rushed to help his father out. He later spoke to media persons and said that there was nothing to worry as the CM had sustained only a minor injury on his head.

CM recovered quickly and continued his campaign post lunch. After campaigning for almost 5 days in Chamundeshwari, CM left for Bengaluru to take part in the tour along with Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

However, on Tuesday April 3, Siddaramaiah was taken to Vikram Hospital in Bengaluru for a scan. He was soon discharged and later joined Congress president Rahul Gandhi in Shivamogga. Sources said the chief minister is fine and had to only go through routine check-up.

After criticism from journos, PM Modi directs withdrawal of order on fake news

Following widespread criticism from various quarters against the central government over guidelines to curb fake news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday April 3 directed that the newly amended guidelines on fake news be withdrawn and that the matter should only be addressed in Press Council of India.

It may be recalled that on Monday April 2 information and broadcasting ministry in its statement said that accreditation of journalists who publish or propagate fake news could be permanently suspended or cancelled as per the amended guidelines of the central government.

However, though it may sound a positive step on the outset, it has created panic among journalists, who, along with the opposition parties, described the guidelines as an attack on the freedom of press.

An emergency meeting was also called at the Press Club of India.

Minister of information and broadcasting Smriti Irani said that the guidelines have generated a lot of debate and that the government was open for suggestions from journalists. “PIB Accreditation Guidelines asking Press Council of India & News Broadcasters Association to define & act against ‘fake news’ have generated debate. Several journalists & organisations have reached out giving positive suggestions regarding the same. @MIB_India is more than happy to engage with journalist body or organisation/s wanting to give suggestions so that together we can fight the menace of ‘fake news’ & uphold ethical journalism. Space X’s recycled rocket and spaceship deliver cargo to ISS

Monday’s trip marked SpaceX’s 14th resupply mission for NASA under a $1.6 billion contract.

SpaceX blasted off a load of supplies Monday for the International Space Station aboard a rocket and a cargo ship that have both flown before, marking the second such flight for the California-based company.

“Falcon 9 is on its way,” a SpaceX commentator said as the white rocket surged skyward over Cape Canaveral, Florida at 4:30 pm.

SpaceX’s Jessica Jensen, director of Dragon mission management, said the booster had previously launched in August 2017, and the Dragon flew to the space station in April 2016.

SpaceX’s first such double-recycle resupply mission for NASA flew to the orbiting outpost in December 2017.

The effort is part of SpaceX’s mission to lower the cost of space flight by re-using costly, multimillion-dollar components that typically have been discarded into the ocean after each launch.

“What is really neat about this is it is becoming the norm,” Jensen said.

Monday’s trip marked SpaceX’s 14th resupply mission for NASA under a $1.6 billion contract that aims to guarantee much-needed supplies and equipment to the astronauts living in orbit.

The capsule is packed with about 5,800 pounds (2,600Kg) of food and science experiments, including one to study thunderstorms and another to test drug development in space.

The cargo ship is scheduled to latch onto the space station early Wednesday, and will stay in orbit for about a month before returning to Earth.

Saudi King, Trump discuss Mideast peace process over phone

Saudi Arabian King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud held a telephonic conversation with US President Donald Trump in which he said that it is necessary for the international community to move forward the Middle East peace process.

According to a Saudi Press Agency report on Tuesday, the Saudi king on Monday evening reaffirmed the kingdom’s steadfast position on the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

The conversation came amid rising tensions between Israel and the Palestinians following the bloody clashes in the past days near the Israeli border with Gaza Strip that have left at least 15 Palestinian protesters dead and 1,200 others injured.

The Saudi king expressed his appreciation for a statement issued by the White House on its strong stance towards the Iran-backed Houthi militias in Yemen.

The Houthi militias have stepped up their attacks on Saudi targets by firing missiles at the kingdom in retaliation for the Saudi-led Arab coalition’s airstrikes in Yemen.

The Saudi leader also pledged to make efforts to find a political solution to the Yemeni crisis and provide humanitarian aid to its people.

At the same time, the two leaders underlined the importance of the achievements of the concerted international efforts to fight terrorist organisations in Iraq and Syria.

SP-BSP pact will knock out BJP: SP leader Akhilesh Yadav

Notwithstanding the speculation on the durability of the new-found alliance with one-time rival BSP, Samajwadi Party chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav says the 23-year-old acrimony with Mayawati and her party “is a thing of past”.

“All that is irrelevant now is that both parties are walking ahead, hand in hand, to achieve a larger national objective of defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is detrimental to both the state and the nation,” Yadav said in an interview to IANS.

In a detailed interview after the stunning defeat the Samajwadi Party dealt to the BJP by trouncing it in Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha byelections, seats held earlier by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya, Yadav said that the BSP-SP combine was like a “glue which will knock the daylights off the arrogant and useless BJP government”.

The BJP, the 44-year-old leader added, would often ridicule how the opposition had no narrative to take on the saffron camp. He pointed out that with the coming together of the BSP and SP, the narrative had finally arrived.

What about the bitterness that enveloped the relations between Mayawati and his own father, Mulayam Singh Yadav, particularly after the attack on her?

“The past is past. I look ahead. Mayawatiji has set the record straight that when this incident happened I was nowhere in politics and hence I cannot be drawn into the slugfest.”

Dropping enough hints that the BSP-SP bonhomie would continue till the 2019 Lok Sabha polls when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will seek another term for his government, the former Chief Minister said his party already had the development plank and now what it was doing was to emulate the BJP in micro-booth and caste management.

Asked about the mercurial nature of the Dalit diva Mayawati, he said that time changes people.

“Seat sharing are small things and they will be sorted out at the time it is needed. We will cross the bridge when we come to it.”

Akhilesh Yadav said he was now doing what the BJP had taught them.

“They talk of panna pramukhs, understanding and adjusting the caste matrix and focussing on booth management. Now when we do it, we are accused of being casteist… How can it be win-win for the BJP?”

After the Lok Sabha byelection victories, Akhilesh Yadav drove to Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati’s residence for a 30-minute meeting.

He said Mayawati was warm and bore no signs of rivalry or bitterness. “She was welcoming. She took me on a pictorial tour of her journey from a commoner to being Chief Minister four times of the country’s most populous state.”

Akhilesh Yadav accused the Yogi Adityanath government of doing nothing in Uttar Pradesh in the past one year as compared to the “exemplary development” under his watch.

“The only thing the BJP government has done in the past one year is to cut ribbons of projects that were initiated by the SP government.”

Getting philosophical, he recounted how having studied in a military school at Dhaulpur in Rajasthan and later in Bengaluru, he had forgotten he was a backward-caste person.

“I almost forgot it until the BJP reminded me of my backward caste DNA. I am thankful to them for doing so. I would like to say that I may be born in a backward family, but I am a forward looking person who is progressive, has a vision and is growth-oriented.”

He listed many failures of the state government while calling the BJP confused and jittery.

He pointed out how they were trying desperately to find an answer to the coming together of the BSP and SP.

Asked if he planned for more parties to join them in a grand alliance, he said: “As of now it is just UP and the BSP-SP together.” His relationships with the Congress, he said, were normal and cordial.

Super Cup: Jamshedpur ride goalie’s heroics to edge past Minerva in tiebreaker

Jamshedpur FC rode on young goalkeeper Sanjiban Ghosh’s heroics to put it across I-League champions Minerva Punjab FC 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out and take their place in quarterfinals of the Super Cup here.

In the fourth Round of 16 match of the tournament, being played at the Kalinga stadium Sanjiban affected at least 8-9 saves throughout the 120 minutes of the match and then put the icing on the cake with two more saves in the sudden death tie-breaker to emerge the undisputed hero of the match on Monday.

Minerva, who were clearly the better team in the match, were left ruing their missed chances in the game, including an opportunity to close the game out in the tie-breaker.

The game began with Minerva lining up a 4-3-3 formation, going in with a seemingly potent strike force of Ghanian William Asiedu, the young and talented Girik Khosla and Chencho Geyltshen upfront.

Jamshedpur went in with their strong four-man defence led by India star Anas, and Brazilians Trindade Goncalves and Wellington Priori making up the attack engine in the central midfield, with Haitian Belfort and Farukh Choudhary tasked to do all the running in and around the Minerva penalty box.

After a listless first 20 minutes, the game opened up when Anas brought down Chencho in a dangerous area outside the Jamshedpur box. Asiedu’s free kick rebounded off goalkeeper Sanjiban Ghosh, and fell tantalizingly at the feet of an on-rushing Deepak Devrani. The defender, with only a fallen goalkeeper to beat, lobbed over.

Then in the 26th minute, off a Robin Gurung cross from the left flank, the ball found a faint deflection from a diving Farukh, fell invitingly at the feet of Belfort, who muffed his shot to allow Bikash to unleash a curling left footer, which beat Kiran Limbu all ends up but could not beat the Minerva upright.

Chencho and the young midfielder Akash Sangwan then got involved prominently in the game. Chencho first had a long ranger comfortably saved by Sanjiban and then from an Akash Sangwan ball into the box, he could not manage to wrap his legs around the ball eventually, with only the goalkeeper ahead of him.

Akash’s second beauty of the half, found Girik Khosla one on one with the keeper again, but the forward’s shot was saved ably by Sanjiban, who had a brilliant game.

The half ended with a booking for the experienced Anas, when he went into referee Santhosh’s book for a second cynical tackle in the game, this time on Girik Khosla, just outside the Jamshedpur box.

Although possession was even, Minerva clearly ended the half, the stronger side.

The second half mirrored the first in terms of Minerva having the better chances and looking the stronger side, although possession remained divided equally.

The best chance of the half, came in the 56th minute, with Chencho and Akash Sangwan again at the heart of it.

Just after Jamshedpur affected the first substitutions of the match, a double change, bringing in Sumeet Passi for Farukh Choudhary and Karan Amin for Yumnam Raju, Chencho had another shot on target in the 74th minute, Minerva’s fifth of the match, but it was the Jamshedpur custodian to the rescue again.

Minerva finished with two more chances going a begging, Chencho hitting the side netting and this time Bali Gagandeep (brought in in the 77th minute for Girik Khosla) having his shot saved by Sanjiban.

Sumeet Passi converted Jamshedpur’s fifth to put them ahead 4-3 and Kamalpreet then cooly converted for the Punjab side to get into sudden death.

Kiran Limbu then stopped Bikash Jairu’s power drive and the Minerva’s goalkeeper then opted to seal the issue himself, but Sanjiban extended his brilliant day with a crucial save.

The experienced Mehtab Hussain then converted cheekily and Sanjiban blocked Bali Gangandeep’s shot for Minerva and it rebounded off the post to send Jamshedpur FC into ecstasy and the Super Cup quarterfinals.

No Re-Exam for 10 Std Maths Paper

The government announced on Tuesday it will not conduct any re-examination for Class 10 maths paper despite an alleged leak of the question paper.

“Consequent to the preliminary evaluation of the impact of reportedly leaked CBSE Class 10 maths paper and keeping in mind the paramount interest of students, the CBSE has decided not to conduct re-examination even in Delhi, NCR (National Capital Region) and Haryana. Hence, no re-exam for Class 10,” Human Resource Development Ministry Secretary Anil Swarup tweeted.

The government had earlier said it may re-conduct the maths examination possibly in July for Delhi, NCR and Haryana.

Tennis world turns focus on clay court season

The tennis world is turning its attention to the clay court season, with the field wide open due to the absence of Swiss great Roger Federer and Argentina’s Juan Martín del Potro, as well as questions about the health of Spain’s Rafa Nadal, the undisputed “king of clay.”

Nadal, the World No. 1, may make his return to the court from a leg injury next weekend, when Spain take on Germany in a Davis Cup tie in Valencia, reports Efe.

The Spanish star, a 16-time Grand Slam champion, has been bothered by the leg injury since the Australian Open and again injured the leg in Acapulco.

Nadal faces a tough challenge since he will be defending 4,680 points after winning titles on red clay at the French Open, Monte Carlo, Madrid and Barcelona last year.

The Spaniard regained the top spot in the ATP rankings with 8,770 points, while Federer, who is once again skipping the clay season to focus on the grass court events leading up to Wimbledon, has 8,670 points.

Federer was the World No. 1 until the Miami Open, where the defending champion went out in the second round, losing 990 points.

The Swiss legend, however, has no points riding on clay, while Nadal will have to equal his 2017 performance to stay in the top spot, a difficult task at best.

On the women’s side, Romania’s Simona Halep, the world No. 1, won Madrid, was the finalist in Rome and went down in the semis last year in Stuttgart.

Danish World No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki and Spanish World No. 3 Garbiñe Muguruza, the 2016 French Open champion, will also be in the mix.

Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, the defending French Open champ and finalist at the Miami Open, will also be bringing her hard-hitting game to the chase for glory on clay.

French Actress Stephane Audran Left For Her Heavenly Abode At The Age Of 85

Stephane Audran, the French screen star of 1960’s, 1970’s & 1980’s, has recently left for heavenly abode. She passed away recently at the ripe old age of 85. Stephane Audran had won a string of awards including a Bafta for “Best Actress” in the year 1974 for two films, The Discreet Charm Of The Bourgeoisie and Just Before Nightfall. She had also played the lead in Babette’s Feast, which won the Oscar for “Best Foreign Language Film” in the year 1988, and was Cara in Brideshead Revisited on British TV Soap Opera. Stephane Audran was also known for her work with her husband, director Claude Chabrol. The pair had made 25 films together during their marriage, which lasted from the year 1964 to the year 1980 and many of those films saw her play unfaithful or betrayed wives mostly named Helene. Their films included Les Biches, for which Stephane Audran had won the “Best Actress” at the Berlin Film Festival in the year 1968. Another film, Violette Noziere, earned her a Cesar award in France a decade later. Ironically speaking it was only in the middle age that the great beauty Stephane Audran became a big name internationally.

Justin Bieber Involved In A Car Crash

Justin Bieber was recently involved in a car smash in West Hollywood. The Sorry hitmaker was driving his Mercedes – Benz G – Class on Sunset Boulevard when he was rear – ended by a Range Rover. Photographs of the incident show some damage to the back of Justin Bieber’s vehicle, as well as him walking over to speak with the passengers of the other car involved. Law enforcement sources told that an OnStar system, which is a personal in – car assistant, alerted the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to the accident, which happened at around 9 pm. Police officers reportedly stood by as Justin Bieber and the other driver exchanged information, and no charges were filed. Justin Bieber was alone in the vehicle, after recently splitting from Selena Gomez. Justin Bieber is now alleged to be dating Baskin Champion, who is the sister of his friend Patrick Schwarzenegger’s girlfriend, Abby Champion. She was spotted leaving the singer’s Beverly Hills home earlier recently, after spending around four hours with him. They spent the day inside and she had arrived on her own. Justin Bieber was waiting at home for her. After spending the afternoon together, they both left the house within a few minutes of each other in separate cars. In fact Justin Bieber was then seen by photographers hopping into his Lamborghini minutes after Baskin Champion had left his mansion. Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez had rekindled their on – again / off – again romance at the end of 2017 and reportedly split at the beginning of this month. The break – up had come days after the former Disney Channel star shared an affectionate post on social media to celebrate Justin Bieber’s birthday on 1st Mar, 2018.

The One Direction star Liam Payne was spotted getting cosy with a dancer in United Arab Emirates (UAE) recently. But Cheryl has slammed the rumors suggesting her boyfriend Liam Payne is cheating on her with one of his dancers while he was in Dubai recently. The One Direction singer hit headlines recently when pictures surfaced online, showing him enjoying a night out at the Penthouse Bar at Five Palm Jumeirah Dubai with his back – up dancer Chloe Ferns, with gossips suggesting that they were getting up close and personal. Reservation policy will continue: Rajnath

The government has no intention of changing the existing reservation policy for Dalits and tribes, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh announced on Tuesday.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Rajnath Singh dubbed as rumours speculation that the government wanted to end the reservation system. “Rumours are being spread about reservation policy, it is wrong.

“I appeal to all political parties to help in maintaining peace and amity in the country,” he added amid noisy protests.

The comments came a day after widespread protests by Dalits rocked the country against the dilution of a law aimed at preventing atrocities on Dalits and tribals.
