BJP MLAs decided to swich Congress says Belur Gopalakrishna

June 21, 2018 by Nasheman

Congress party leader and former MLA Belur Gopalakrishna dropped a sensation, on June 20, saying that no less than seven BJP MLAs who needed to jump to Congress were in contact with him.

Strikingly, Beluru Gopalakrishna himself had changed sides from BJP to the Congress.

A portion of these MLAs includes the ones who had left the Congress for joining BJP, he said. “If the party agrees then I am ready to bring them back to Congress”, he included.

The Congress leader additionally sounded certain about the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition government in the state finishing full residency. “BJP’s attempts to topple the state government will fail pitiably”, he said. Giving explanations behind his optimism about the failure of “Operation Kamala”, he said that he knew about the strategies of the BJP. “I have learned everything from B S Yeddyurappa’s tutelage”, he said.

Yoga frenzy grips Karnataka

June 21, 2018 by Nasheman

Thousands of people, young and old, on Thursday celebrated the fourth International Yoga Day in Karnataka by participating in yoga sessions held in cities and towns across the state.

Prominent among those who performed yoga aasanas included 85-year-old former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, his son and Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader B.S. Yeddyurappa and Union Minister for Programme Implementation D.V. Sadananda Gowda.

While Deve Gowda performed yoga at his residence in the city, Yeddyurappa took part in the Yoga Day activities held at his party office in Bengaluru.

In Bengaluru, hundreds flocked to Kanteerava Stadium in the city centre where the main event was held from 7 a.m. in its circular ground. Kumaraswamy was present at the venue.

“Yoga Day provides a glimpse into India’s rich and ancient heritage… Yoga is dear to me. My family, including my father (Deve Gowda) and wife (Anita), too are ardent followers of yoga and practice it daily,” the Chief Minister said in a statement.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar also joined in the Yoga Day celebrations along with students at a private university here.

Several public venues across Mysuru, Dharwad, Hubballi and Mangaluru among other cities and towns were also filled with enthusiastic people performing “surya namaskaras” (sun salutation, a yogic practice) and other yogic poses.

Hundreds gathered in front of the iconic royal Mysore palace in Mysuru to perform yoga, making for a delightful spectacle as they performed the exercises in unison.

Mysuru had entered the Guinness World Records for holding the largest yoga lesson in the world in 2017, when 55,506 participants performed yoga at one venue.

The Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, one among the yoga forms, is said to have been popularised in the country by a yoga teacher from the state K. Pattabhi Jois, who had set up a yoga research institute in Mysuru (then Mysore) in 1948.

Indian public sector needs some fixing for true Cloud adoption

June 21, 2018 by Nasheman

The vast Indian public sector will embark on a true digital journey only once the government decides to relax old procurement rules, make the stakeholders aware of benefits of Cloud and get rid of the ageing IT infrastructure, a top Amazon Web Services (AWS) executive has stressed.

According to Peter Moore, Regional Managing Director, Public Sector-Asia Pacific at AWS, which is Amazon’s growing Cloud computing business, governments around the world including in India are grappling with the massive loss of data owing to old hardware and software, badly designed IT architecture and poor operating practices in terms of accessing the data.

“Any major transformation in technology requires people to change and India is no different. It has cultural as well as technological challenges when it comes to embracing Cloud. Addressing tech challenges is easy but making people want to do something different is the difficult part,” Moore told IANS in an interview on the sidelines of the AWS public sector summit here.

Civil servants, he said, can’t be forced to learn Cloud computing faster or convinced easily to replace legacy IT infrastructure and reskilling the workforce can only change the scenario.

“We would like to help the government design effective procurement vehicles that cut long paperwork aligned with traditional hardware purchasing,” emphasised Moore, who is driving government agencies, educational institutions and non-profits implement AWS Cloud computing services.

In India, AWS is listed as Amazon Internet Services Pvt Ltd (AISPL) which undertakes the resale and marketing of AWS Cloud services in the country.

In order to make deeper inroads, Moore doesn’t want to waste time on customers who don’t plan to begin their Cloud journey despite continued efforts.

“There is so much opportunity in India. It won’t be wise of us to waste efforts on customers who don’t move say for years despite the best of our efforts. We are seeking customers who are ready to go with us now.

“We are customer-obsessed and more than eager to give them best advice when it comes to either migrating workloads to Cloud or building something entirely new,” Moore said.

AWS has a long list of government customers in India but feels there is a long way to go when it comes to achieving its full potential.

“There is a lot of talk within the Indian government agencies about the success they have had after moving to Cloud. We have all the capabilities that meet the government standards. We have already passed all the tests — be it scalability, agility or security,” Moore told IANS.

AWS is the first Global Cloud Provider (GCP) in the country to achieve full empanelment by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for delivering Cloud services to government customers.

The company successfully completed the Standardisation Testing and Quality Certification (STQC) audit from MeitY for Cloud services last year.

The company launched AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region with two availability zones in 2016 and has seen stupendous growth in adding new customers in the region.

“For AWS, Cloud computing means that you don’t need to pay upfront and pay only what you consume, scale up and scale down as you need. This is the reason for our tremendous success in a short span of time,” Moore informed.

He sees a real momentum in the Indian tech landscape, especially in the start-up segment.

“Almost all the start-ups in India would not have been start-ups without access to AWS. They are not asking us should we move to Cloud but how to move. There is a real pent-up demand coming from India,” the AWS executive emphasised.

Exponential growth is right around the corner in the public sector, he said, adding that AWS, which has invested a lot for years in setting up right infrastructure in India, is now ready to reap the results.

“We will continue to work to make procurement process easier as it is the key roadblock. We will continue to develop our capacities, add new capabilities and invest significantly in the country towards training, skilling and building resources,” Moore noted.

Bank exits lead to fall in female corporate leaders

June 19, 2018 by Nasheman

The number of women leading the financial services sector in India is on a decline. If Chanda Kochhar leaves ICICI Bank permanently, the sector would lose its third high-profile female bank CEO in just months.

On Monday, ICICI bank said that CEO Chanda Kochhar would be on leave till the conclusion of an internal probe into her alleged conflict of interest and violation of lenders’ code of giving a loan of Rs 3,250 crore to Videocon group in 2012.

Whatever the outcome, it looks increasingly unlikely Kochhar, who has led the bank since 2009, will have her term renewed when it ends early next year. Her exit would follow Shikha Sharma who in December will step down after ten years atop Axis Bank. She had recently had her term extended to 2021, but local newspaper reports said the central bank had asked the board to reconsider this.
Both banks have struggled with bad loans and shareholder returns have underperformed peers. At the other end of the spectrum, Arundhati Bhattacharya retired as chief of State Bank of India last year after four solid years at the helm of the country’s largest lender.

Performance aside, its a blow for diversity. There were only 24 women CEOs in the S&P BSE 500 index, according to a study published in June by Institutional Investor Advisory Services (IiAS).

The presence of Bhattacharya, Kochhar, and Sharma, along with female heads of the unlisted local operations of Morgan Stanley and Standard Chartered, made gender diversity look like less of a problem in financial services. However, top bankers were overwhelmingly male, too, even before the exodus.

At the board level, there is 13 percent female representation as of March 2017 in the NIFTY 500, another important index, but a big improvement only came after regulators required listed companies to have at least one women director. Although the rules are unlikely to tighten further anytime soon, a report backed by IiAS says companies should target 20 percent by 2020.

Changing the broader dynamic looks tough. While New Delhi increased paid maternity leave last year from 12 to 26 weeks, that is not much help in a country where barely one-quarter of women are in the workforce, down from 35 percent in 1990. In the meantime, females who aspire to one day occupy the corner office will have fewer role models to emulate.

Ceasefire” immediate provocation in J&K

June 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Withdrawal of “ceasefire” by the union government against the advice of the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister appeared to be immediate provocation for BJP pulling out of the government in Jammu and Kashmir.
The outgoing chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday evening clarified she wanted the state government wanted the ceasefire to continue, but the union government did not agree.
She said the Centre wanted the implementation of strict measures, and she opposed it.”I wanted to follow healing touch policy and they wanted muscular policy against our youths”,she alleged.
Mehbooba also charged the BJP workers with harassing the PDP workers and minorities in Jammu region.
She met the Governor and submitted her papers and requested N N Vohra to arrange for fresh elections as PDP too would not enter into a further alliance with any party to form the government.
Her predecessor and National Conference leader, Omar Abdullah, who also met the Governor demanded fresh elections to the state assembly and informed Vohra that NC was against any alliance to form an alternative government.”Governor’s rule should be for a brief period”, he said.
The term of the Governor expires on June 25. Vohra had been Governor for two terms of ten years in all. He is likely to get a further extension in view of the absence of a popular government and Amarnath yatra.
Abdullah said Mehbooba should have resigned earlier than allowing the BJP to take the lead.
The union home minister Rajnath Singh called the union home secretary, Rajeev Guava, heads of the IB and national security adviser to prepare plans for the Governor’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir.
K Vijay Kumar, former DG of Tamil Nadu Police and advisor to home ministry is likely to be sent to Srinagar as one of the advisers to assist the Governor. Kumar had served in Srinagar as IG of BSF during the peak of militancy.

Committed to waive farm loans: Karnataka CM

June 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Tuesday said the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S)-Congress coalition government is committed to waiving farm loans.

“I am soon going to call a meeting with the nationalized banks to figure out the modalities to waive loans of farmers in a scientific way. Our government is highly committed to waiving farm loans,” Kumaraswamy said at his maiden press conference here after assuming office on May 23.

The Chief Minister, who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a two-day visit to New Delhi starting Sunday, said he has requested the Central government to bear 50 percent of the cost of the farm loans the state government plans to waive.

“As we are ready to waive loans to free farmers from debt, I request the Central government to provide 50 percent financial support to our initiative,” the JD-S leader had said at the fourth meeting of the governing council of Niti Aayog.

He also wrote to the Prime Minister on Monday to allocate 25 percent of Rs 2 lakh-crore special bonds the Central government plans to raise to bail-out state-run banks to waive farm loans across the country.

Admitting that his JD-S did not receive people’s mandate, the Chief Minister said his government will work for the all-round development of the state and its citizens.

“The state government will work towards presenting a scheme which allows all the farmers to get loans without any difficulty.”

The JD-S leader promised in the party’s election manifesto that it would waive farm loans within 24 hours of assuming office if it was voted to power with a majority.

“Since we were not voted to power with a majority, we need to discuss with the other leaders in the coalition government,” he said.

The Chief Minister who was late by 90 minutes for the press conference at Press Club in the city center said he was busy with public visiting him at his home in the southern suburb.

Congress rules out coalition with PDP .

June 19, 2018 by Nasheman

The Congress on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of a coalition with the Peoples Democratic Alliance (PDP), making Governor’s rule look imminent in Jammu and Kashmir after the BJP pulled out of the PDP-led coalition government.

Reacting to the development, senior Congress leader and former J& K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said the question of an alliance with the PDP “does not arise”.

“Whatever has happened is good. People of Jammu and Kashmir will get some relief. They (BJP) ruined Kashmir and have now pulled out,” Azad said.

He stressed that the question of Congress forming an alliance with PDP “does not arise”.

Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala pointed out that in the last four years, 373 security personnel and 239 civilians have been killed in Jammu and Kashmir due to heightened militancy.

What did the nation get out of this?” Surjewala said in a tweet.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal pointed out that the Modi government had claimed that demonetization in 2016 had broken the back of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir but that did not seem true.

“Didn’t BJP tell us that demonetization had broken the back of terrorism in Kashmir? Then what happened?” he asked.
