Indian astronauts to get Idli Sambar in space by 2022

September 14, 2018 by Nasheman

Idli Sambar is probably one of the most beloved food items among a majority of the Indian crowd. Soon, or more accurately by the year 2022, Indian astronauts will be able to eat their fill of the savoury idli and sambar while travelling in space… if all goes according to plan.

Not wanting to lag behind other space agencies such as NASA and other counterparts, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is also planning to send humans on space voyages, and this also includes making preparations for sustenance, AKA food.

Considering that the food in the space shuttle cannot be sent back to the kitchen if it is inedible, ISRO has to see that the food being given to the space voyagers, should not fall apart in zero-gravity conditions. To help with this, Mysuru based Defence Food Research Laboratory has been working hard at trying to prepare such “zero-gravity defying food” and has also held discussions with the ISRO authorities regarding the same.

Prof. Semwal, at the symposium and exhibition of food technology on the topic “Strengthening Army Through Food Technology” held here on Wednesday, September 12, said that food and drink items such as idli sambar, mango juice, frozen fruit juice etc. could be provided in the proper packaging. He added that, as of now, food that can be supplied has not yet been finalised and that the existing packages were not suitable for space. He, however, is hopeful that this can be accomplished by 2022.

Court orders framing of sexual harassment charges against Pachauri

September 14, 2018 by Nasheman

A court here on Friday ordered framing of sexual harassment charges against noted environmentalist R.K. Pachauri, who has been accused of outraging the modesty of his colleague.

Metropolitan Magistrate Charu Gupta fixed October 20 for formal framing of charges under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), Section 354A (advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures) and Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the India Penal Code.

However, the court dropped charges under Section 354B (using criminal force against a woman), Section 354D (stalking) and Section 341 (wrongful restraint) levelled against the former chief of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).

The Delhi Police had booked him under the sections related to use of criminal force against a woman, stalking and others.

Pachauri was accused of sexually harassing a female colleague in 2015. He stepped down as Chairperson of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in February 2015 and proceeded on leave from TERI, where he was the Director General. Later, he also stepped down from his post in TERI.

Pachauri has, however, denied the charges against him.

There has been speculation that Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy plans to divide Belagavi for better administration. This had evoked sharp criticism and now drawing curtains to it, the CM’s official sources called it a cunning plot by the opposition.

As the CM is all set to visit Belagavi district this Saturday, September 15, the rumours around Kumaraswamy’s plans to split Belagavi into Gokak and Chikkodi districts have been making rounds.

“CM Kumaraswamy started with dividing north and south Karnataka and when he didn’t succeed he now wants to divide districts. India playing leading role in lowering global emissions: Anand Mahindra

September 14, 2018 by Nasheman

India is already playing a leading role in lowering global emissions. The country’s efforts in mainstreaming renewable energy and energy efficiency are remarkable. These, and its ambition in the electric mobility space, are admired across the globe, says Mahindra Group Executive Chairman Anand Mahindra.

For him, climate change needs to be addressed and he has called on businesses worldwide to commit to science-based targets (SBTs), which aimed to reduce emissions as underpinned by the historic 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement, the first-ever legally binding treaty adopted by 197 countries that came in force on November 4, 2016.

“India’s social programmes like Ujala (bio-mass to LPG) and Swachh Bharat are very innovative and effective ways of addressing the issues of both planet and people on a large scale where they can actually create a positive impact,” Mahindra told IANS in an interview here.

He’s hereto co-chair the Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) that aims to encourage all stakeholders to raise their ambition with many new possibilities emerging out of the discussions.

A firm believer that climate change needs to be addressed, he was categorically clear in saying that no nation can afford to ignore this.

“But as I said earlier, everyone needs to do more. There is a lot that developed countries are doing and we look forward to the steps they take as these actions help the global effort, due to advances in technology that others can learn from and emulate.”

On the status on the adoption of science-based climate targets, Mahindra said nearly three years on from Paris, the race is on to meet the target of holding global temperature rise to under two degrees Celsius, helping avoid the worst effects of climate change by achieving peak greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.

“At this summit, new evidence will be presented to demonstrate that companies around the world, and in some of the highest-emitting industries, are taking action to make the transition to the low-carbon business models of the future.”

Currently, 20 Mahindra Group companies have signed up for the science-based climate targets, with Mahindra Sanyo Special Steels being the first steel company in the world to get its targets approved.

This covers more than 90 per cent of the Group’s emissions and other Group companies are in the process of signing up for these targets, he said.

Mahindra sees business value in adopting these targets that he announced to commit at the World Economic Forum in January this year.

“We have already seen remarkable value in reducing emissions through the EP100 programme which aims to double energy productivity in our main businesses — auto, farm equipment and holiday resorts. Science-based targets are a way of ensuring that ambition is stepped up and action is aligned to the target set by the Paris Agreement.”

“The need for sustainability in business is creating a tectonic shift of mindset, as dramatic as moving from smoke signals to Skype. The scale involved in moving from combustion engines to electric, from conventional to alternative energy, opens up a new world of business possibilities.”

He said the creation of new technologies and leveraging them to create new businesses is a huge opportunity for the future.

This includes retro-fitting homes, buildings, and factories, to make them more energy efficient; and manufacturing literally billions of energy efficient appliances for lighting, heating, cooking, cooling, and washing for every home.

“We are talking about massive scale once consumers change their lifestyle. The potential investment in wind and solar energy alone, over the next two decades, is six trillion dollars.

“Beside the business case for sustainability, we as a company have discovered that everything we have done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions has given us a financial return.”

An optimistic Mahindra said the GCAS would encourage all stakeholders to raise their ambition with many new possibilities emerging out of the discussions.

The commitments made in the lead-up to GCAS have already created momentum and GCAS will help carry this through.

As a platform to address the challenge of climate change, the GCAS to my mind is already a success.

“For me, the work toward GCAS began at Davos when we issued the SBT (science-based targets) challenge to other global corporations. The challenge has gained huge momentum and more than 470 companies have already signed up for these SBTs.

“I am sure that the conversations at GCAS will sustain and even increase the momentum that has been created. We have Indian steel and cement companies that have come forward to sign onto these SBTs. These sectors are known to be hard-to-abate, yet Indian companies have shown vision and ambition in taking this action. These point toward strong signs of success for GCAS already,” he said.

The three-day climate action summit, an initiative by California Governor Jerry Brown, began here on Wednesday amidst the presence of 4,000-plus business leaders, investors, citizens and government representatives from all over the world, coming together with the united resolve to “take ambition to the next level”.

Board topper alleges gang rape in Haryana, accused evade arrest

September 14, 2018 by Nasheman

Three men accused of allegedly gang raping a 19-year-old board examination topper in Haryana’s Mahendragarh district continued to evade arrest on Friday, more than 52 hours after the incident.

The Haryana Police on Friday launched a manhunt after the girl alleged that she was raped by them on Wednesday near Kanina village.

The victim, who has identified her attackers, and her parents have said that the police were not taking action in the matter and were initially dealing with it casually.

The victim, a second year student in a college, topped the CBSE board examination in 2017 and was felicitated by the President earlier this year.

Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) A.S. Chawla told the media here on Friday that all efforts were being made to arrest the accused.

The three accused, who belong to the same village as the victim, allegedly kidnapped the student in their vehicle from Kanina bus stand on Wednesday while she was on her way for coaching classes.

She said that they gave her water to drink which was laced with sedative. They then took turns raping her near the Kanina village till she fell unconscious, she said.

They later dumped her at a bus stop near the village. The victim’s family said that the women police station in Rewari initially refused to entertain their complaint citing issues of jurisdiction.

“We want justice. They have ruined the life of my daughter who is so good in studies. Where is the ‘Beti Padaho Beti Bachao’ slogan of the government now? The police harassed us while registering the case,” the mother of the victim said.

The police later registered a ‘Zero FIR’ (in which the case is later transferred to the concerned police station).

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said the accused would be arrested soon and would face action as per law.

Former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said the incident showed the poor law and order situation in Haryana where women were not safe at all.

Toronto Premiere Of ‘Bulbul Can Sing’ Held

National Award -winning filmmaker Rima Das’ next feature, Bulbul Can Sing
which premiered recently at Toronto International Film Fest 2018 (TIFF) screened to a packed house of audiences.

Rima Das’ 3rd independent feature in Assamese language made its World Premiere at Toronto International Film Fest (TIFF) 2018 in competition segment, “Contemporary World Cinema.”

Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director of Toronto International Film Fest (TIFF) says, “Last year Rima Das came to the Fest with Village Rockstars, her delightful drama about a girl with a dream. After its premiere here, it went on to sweep India’s National Film Awards & played in dozens of festivals around the world.

Rima Das is now back with another breath of fresh air, once again shot amidst the timeless beauty of her home village in India’s Assam state. As in the earlier film, Rima Das imbues every frame with insight & respect, and this time there’s a growing exploration of adolescence. Bulbul Can Sing is no simple rural idyll.

Bulbul Can Sing is an exuberant young woman, most happy when she’s hanging out in the fields with her friends Bonny & Sumu. As these 3 teenagers, 2 girls & a boy, begin to define their own identities, they find themselves increasingly clashing with the age – old rules set down by village. Bulbul is attracted to a boy for 1st time ever, but her mother advises that “Girls should be modest. Girls should behave well.” Sumu is bullied for not conforming to what his peers expect of a young man. For Bonny, the pressures of community become unbearable.

Rima Das recounts her story in the pure language of cinema. The camera finds moments, in a music class, by a lake, or on landscape of Bulbul’s face, that suddenly illuminate this girl’s coming to womanhood & self – awareness. A villager’s stray remark compresses centuries of tradition & offers guidance to Bulbul, but also a constraint. And as she learns to walk with both love & death in her life, countless variations of natural light give her whole world an immersive glow.”

The writer – director – producer made the film independently, in the same way as her earlier film, Village Rockstars. Sharing her joy, Rima says, “It’s a huge honor to present Bulbul Can Sing to such a lovely audiences at Toronto International Film Fest (TIFF), I am completely thrilled & overwhelmed by their response. Thank you, Toronto International Film Fest (TIFF) & my team back home. I missed my team a lot.“

Bulbul Can Sing is a visceral coming – of – age drama about a teenage girl, Bulbul, living in a village in Assam, fighting her way through love & loss as she figures out who she really is.

Rima Das’s debut film as a writer –director – producer, Man with Binoculars (Antardrishti) premiered at Tallinn Black Nights Film Fest in the year 2016. Village Rockstars, her 2nd feature film, premiered at Toronto International Film Fest (TIFF) in the year last 2017 under Discovery Section. The film has screened at more than 70 renowned film fest’s and has won 44 awards including 4 National Awards (“Best Feature”, “Best Editing”, Best Audiography” & “Best Child Artiste respecrively).
