Committed to waive farm loans: Karnataka CM

June 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Tuesday said the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S)-Congress coalition government is committed to waiving farm loans.

“I am soon going to call a meeting with the nationalized banks to figure out the modalities to waive loans of farmers in a scientific way. Our government is highly committed to waiving farm loans,” Kumaraswamy said at his maiden press conference here after assuming office on May 23.

The Chief Minister, who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a two-day visit to New Delhi starting Sunday, said he has requested the Central government to bear 50 percent of the cost of the farm loans the state government plans to waive.

“As we are ready to waive loans to free farmers from debt, I request the Central government to provide 50 percent financial support to our initiative,” the JD-S leader had said at the fourth meeting of the governing council of Niti Aayog.

He also wrote to the Prime Minister on Monday to allocate 25 percent of Rs 2 lakh-crore special bonds the Central government plans to raise to bail-out state-run banks to waive farm loans across the country.

Admitting that his JD-S did not receive people’s mandate, the Chief Minister said his government will work for the all-round development of the state and its citizens.

“The state government will work towards presenting a scheme which allows all the farmers to get loans without any difficulty.”

The JD-S leader promised in the party’s election manifesto that it would waive farm loans within 24 hours of assuming office if it was voted to power with a majority.

“Since we were not voted to power with a majority, we need to discuss with the other leaders in the coalition government,” he said.

The Chief Minister who was late by 90 minutes for the press conference at Press Club in the city center said he was busy with public visiting him at his home in the southern suburb.

Congress rules out coalition with PDP .

June 19, 2018 by Nasheman

The Congress on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of a coalition with the Peoples Democratic Alliance (PDP), making Governor’s rule look imminent in Jammu and Kashmir after the BJP pulled out of the PDP-led coalition government.

Reacting to the development, senior Congress leader and former J& K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said the question of an alliance with the PDP “does not arise”.

“Whatever has happened is good. People of Jammu and Kashmir will get some relief. They (BJP) ruined Kashmir and have now pulled out,” Azad said.

He stressed that the question of Congress forming an alliance with PDP “does not arise”.

Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala pointed out that in the last four years, 373 security personnel and 239 civilians have been killed in Jammu and Kashmir due to heightened militancy.

What did the nation get out of this?” Surjewala said in a tweet.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal pointed out that the Modi government had claimed that demonetization in 2016 had broken the back of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir but that did not seem true.

“Didn’t BJP tell us that demonetization had broken the back of terrorism in Kashmir? Then what happened?” he asked.

June 19, 2018 by Nasheman

The dynamism infused in the Indo-French relations during the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to India in March seems to be building up as the two countries have committed to raising their bilateral trade from 9 billion euros to 15 billion euros in the next two years official sources said.

Besides this, boosting French investment in India was one of the several issues that Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj discussed with her French counterpart Jean Yves Le Drian on Monday evening during her maiden visit to France.

The French have been keen to significantly enhance their presence in Indian business ecosystem, especially in areas where they have in-house strengths, notably sustainable development, transport and smart cities.

The two ministers also discussed numerous international issues such as the impact of the decision by US President Donald Trump to withdraw from the Paris Climate Change Treaty as well as the Iran nuclear deal. Regional issues such as terrorism and situation in South Asia and the Indian Ocean region were also discussed.

Swaraj thanked Le Drian on behalf of the Indian government for the unstinted support that France has given to India’s bid to be inducted as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council as well as the Nuclear Suppliers Group.

The two leaders also exchanged a letter of intent for collaboration in the conservation of prehistoric monuments. The first such collaboration will take place in the famous Bhimbetka caves in Swaraj’s native Madhya Pradesh.

Kumaraswamy meets PM Modi to discuss Cauvery Board

June 19, 2018 by Nasheman

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked about issues influencing the state like lack of coal for Karnataka’s thermal power plant and furthermore about the newly framed Cauvery Water Management Board (CMB) in New Delhi on Monday, June 18.

Kumaraswamy on his visit to national capital also met Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari. He also met Congress President Rahul Gandhi at his home to talk about issues the coalition government is currently facing.

Kumaraswamy was accompanied by Janata Dal (Secular) (JD-S) secretary general Danish Ali and All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge for Karnataka Congress K C Venugopal.

JD(S) sources said CM’s visit to Gandhi was a ‘courtesy visit’ and to likewise wish Rahul Gandhi for his birthday on June 19. They included that the Congress chief has assured full help to the Congress-JD(S) coalition.

It is imperative to take note of the Karnataka government had before restricted any move to shape Cauvery Water Management Board. It had proposed the arrangement of Cauvery Decision Implementation Committee. The Supreme Court had requested the central government to set up the Cauvery Management Board (CMB) and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) within a month of declaration of the order. But, the Center has been reprimanded for neglecting to consent to the top court’s order.

Karnataka will soon send to the Center the names of its chosen people in the Cauvery Water Management Board (CMB) and the Regulation Authority however it should address certain issues initially, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy said on Monday.

After meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari, he said issues identified with the Board were among others taken up amid the discussions.

“There were a few specialized issues with respect to the setting up of the board which must be dealt with before it begins working. I asked for Water Resources Ministry to change two-three clauses and it has responded positively,” Kumaraswamy said.

Prior, he had purportedly said that Parliament ought to have examined the issue and a resolution passed on the issue of setting up the Board.

Karnataka has been against the setting up of the Board and inclines toward an arranged answer for the vexed water sharing issue. He said he had just discharged water to Tamil Nadu before it asked and he would have no issue in discharging Tamil Nadu its full-share if the monsoon is great.

On the issue of demand of 50 percent from the center for farmer loan waiver, Kumaraswamy said “I asked for the Prime Minister. But, there was no particular assurance.”

Nobody rejoining AIADMK, says disqualified MLA

June 19, 2018 by Nasheman

All the 18 disqualified legislators of the AIADMK are united and the party can’t lure even one of them, a disqualified MLA said here on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters here, Thanga Tamil Selvan termed as “motivated rumours” the reports about some of the disqualified lawmakers going back to the AIADMK.

Tamil Selvan said his decision to withdraw a case in the Madras High Court challenging the disqualification is due to his loss of hope of getting justice from the judiciary.

“But that does not mean there is a split in the 18 disqualified legislators.”

Earlier in the day, Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar said those who have left the party will join back as it is the compulsion of time.

Eighteen AIADMK legislators were disqualified as lawmakers by Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal after they met the Governor and gave a memorandum expressing loss of confidence in K. Palaniswami and requested him to appoint a new Chief Minister.

The disqualified legislators filed a case against the Speaker’s action. On June 14, a two-member bench of Madras High Court gave a split verdict with the Chief Justice Indira Banerjee upholding the disqualification while companion judge Justice M. Sundar ruling that the Speaker’s decision was invalid.
