Living a good, full and long life – the Japanese way

July 18, 2018 by Nasheman

The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life; Author: Hector Garcia & Francesc Miralles; Publisher: Hutchinson/Penguin Random House; Pages: 208; Price: Rs 499

A British businessman once recounted that while holidaying in Asia, he met a Japanese man in the swimming pool, and as soon they found they had common commercial interests, the latter took out a waterproof visiting card to give him. This may speak volumes about their business practices, but there are other lessons we can learn from the Japanese too.

Try to imagine the Japanese and what may come to mind is a polite but focussed and hard-working people that made their country a global economic power, but they also have an old and sophisticated culture and a way of life that sees the country having an exceptionally large number of centenarians — and fairly active ones at that.

Technological expertise and a strong work ethic may not be a sole Japanese trait, but their culture, some of whose enduring expressions are their magnificent gardens, their exquisite cuisine, the arts of bonsai, ikebana and origami, their tea rituals, Zen and concepts like “wabi-sabi”, make them worthy of study — and emulation.

But the most important would be their concept of ikigai, whose essence is expressed in the old Japanese proverb: “Only staying active will make you want to live a hundred years.” And, as this book brings out, it is based on no esoteric secrets or any special regimen of diet or exercise, but living fully and contentedly.

The co-authors — Spanish-born Japanese citizen and author Garcia and bestselling author of lifestyle books and novels Miralles, who met up in a tiny bar during a rainy Tokyo night — say they were discussing the questions that start to worry people (meaning of life, whether the point is just to live longer or have a higher purpose and so on) when “the mysterious word ikigai came up”.

Ikigai, which “translates roughly as ‘the happiness of always being busy’, is like logotherapy (developed by psychologist and Nazi concentration camp survivor Viktor Frankl) but goes a step beyond”, they say.

Take the residents of the country’s southern-most island of Okinawa, where there are 24.55 people over the age of 100 for every 100,000 inhabitants — far more than the global average. Along with climate, diet and activity, ikigai is cited as a reason why people of Okinawa live longer than people anywhere else in the world.

However, Garcia and Miralles, who researched ikigai with some heartening interactions with the island’s inhabitants, especially of a town there with the highest life expectancy in the world, also found that there is no single book dedicated to bringing this philosophy to the West, and resolved to remedy the deficiency.

And in this insightful book, they reveal how simple ikigai is to understand and follow.

Beginning with a Venn diagram that shows what it is: At the intersection of personal capability, predilection, profession and the world’s requirements, and how it benefits the residents of Okinawa as well as other Japanese, they explore the importance of both a sound body and mind — and how some stress helps.

They then trace how ikigai developed from Frankl’s logotherapy, predated by Japanese psychotherapist-cum-Zen Buddhist Shoma Morita’s purpose-centred therapy, but transcended both, and its correspondence with psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s “flow” theory.

But Garcia and Miralles’ work is not only about comparing theories — which they do most accessibly with the help of some tables, charts and diagrams. They enliven the account with concrete, real-world examples, like of some Japanese craftsmen who exemplify the flow technique, including one who was Steve Jobs’ favourite.

They continue in this vein with some advice from the centenarians — from the world over, not only Japan — feature traditions and proverbs from Japan, the diet that fuels Okinawa’s ikigai, top it up with simple but highly beneficial eastern exercises spanning tai chi to yoga to qigong before coming back to how to achieve ikigai through its 10 rules — the longest of which is seven words.

All this may seem basic common sense, but in our present, complex world, this is not very common. Try it and see — it doesn’t require much and there is not much to lose for you.

Veteran actress Rita Bhaduri dead; film, TV celebs bid adieu

July 17, 2018 by Nasheman

Veteran actress Rita Bhaduri, whose film and television career spanned five decades, died here on Tuesday. The industry bid her a tearful adieu and remembered her as a warm and jovial person, who was one of the “finest” talents to emerge out of FTII.

Rita, 62, died at the Sujay Hospital in Vile Parle. She was fighting a weak kidney and was on dialysis twice a week.

“She died at around 1.30 a.m. and her family members took her body from the hospital at around 4,” a source from the hospital where she was admitted for over a week told IANS.

Zama Habib, producer and writer of the actress’ show “Nimki Mukhiya”, said he had sensed she was critical.

“We were at the hospital last night (Monday). Her condition was not good,” Habib told IANS.

In “Nimki Mukhiya”, she was seen as a Imarti Devi, the grandmother of the house. The shoot for Tuesday was cancelled due to the actress’ demise.

What’s going to happen to Rita’s character on the show?

“The last time she shot for the show was almost 15 days back. We were waiting for her to recover. Today is her funeral. We will see what can be done,” said Habib, who described her as a “gem of a person”.

Rita’s cremation was held on Tuesday afternoon. Fraternity members Satish Shah, Tiku Talsania, Jaya Bhattacharya, Shishir Sharma, Paritosh and Abhay Bhargav attended the funeral.

Shishir was one of the first to share condolences on social media.

“We deeply regret to inform you that Rita Bhaduri has departed for her journey beyond… Extremely sad. Lost a wonderful human being… A mother to many of us. Will miss u Ma,” he wrote.

Satish, who shared the screen space with her in “Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai”, said she was a lovely and warm person.

“People who are here today (at the funeral) are the ones who really cared for her. May her soul rest in peace,” he added.

They paid their last respects to Rita with garlands and some touched her feet.

Jaya said: “Ritaji was such a beautiful person. She had inner strength. You won’t believe it, but she was shooting till now. In fact, while shooting with our production, she would come from dialysis and shoot. She never complained and never made any fuss about anything… And she would need dialysis twice a week. May God rest her soul.”

Rita, a noted alumnus of the famed Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, began her career during the 1960s. She played important supporting parts in movies like “Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa”, “Kya Kehna”, “Dil Vil Pyar Vyar” and “Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon”. She also featured in Gujarati movies.

On the TV front, her credits include popular shows like “Hasratein”, “Sarabhai vs Sarabhai”, “Khichdi”, “Ek Nayi Pehchaan”, “Amanat”, “Ek Mahal Ho Sapnon Ka” and “Kumkum”. She was particularly popular for playing roles of a mother or grandmother.

While for Shabana Azmi, Rita was her friend and closest competitor at FTII, Anil Kapoor says she was one of the “finest actresses that FTII gave us”.

“I had the honour of working with her in ‘Ghar Ho to Aisa’, ‘Beta’ and ‘Viraasat’ and I’m really saddened to hear about her passing. She will be dearly missed by her friends, family and fans,” Anil said.

Actor Anupam Kher said: “Rita Bhaduri was affectionate, helpful, jovial, bright and full of life. It is sad and unfortunate that we sum up a person only when he or she is gone. I wish we met more often. We have lost a very fine actress and a brand ambassador/alumni of FTII.”

Actress Shiwani Chakraborty of “Nimki Mukhiya” said: “For the past two months, she was not keeping well. I will really miss her. More than a co-actor, she was a great human being. I learnt a lot of things from her. She was just like a family member to me.”

Actress Garima Singh, who played her daughter-in-law in the show, said: “We used to share the same room. So we used to talk about lots of things. She was a very positive person.”

Swami Agnivesh beaten up in Jharkhand, 20 detained

July 17, 2018 by Nasheman

Social activist Swami Agnivesh was taken to hospital with injuries on Tuesday after suspected Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) activists thrashed him at Pakur in Jharkhand while shouting “Jai Shri Ram” slogans.

Police said the 78-year-old saffron robed activist was pounced upon as he stepped out of his hotel to take part in the 195th Damin Mahotsav at Littpara. Pakur is located around 360 km from Ranchi.

“I am against any sort of violence. I am known as a peace-loving person. I don’t know why I was attacked,” a visibly shaken Agnivesh told NDTV.

Agnivesh was flanked by tribals who were holding bows and arrows when the mob attacked him.

Even as he kept asking what they wanted, the attackers thrashed him. Agnivesh fell on the ground but the beating continued. His aides did their best to save him.

“They punched, kicked and dragged me on the ground. They also used cuss words,” he told NDTV.

Agnivesh said there were no policemen around. Local reporters had told him that the BJP youth wing’s workers were outside his hotel to protest against his visit but he was completely taken aback by the violence, he said.

“I offered to hold a dialogue with them. But nobody came to speak to me. I was going to a sammelan (seminar) with my tribal friends when they launched an attack… Without any warning, they pounced on me,” Agnivesh said.

The activist likened the attack to mob lynchings that have been reported in several states in the past one year.

An injured Agnivesh, who was in pain, was later taken to a hospital.

Breaking faith barriers, Shia Muslim artists create Hindu wedding mandaps

July 9, 2018 by Nasheman

For centuries, their creations have been used in sombre processions to commemorate and reconstruct the narrative of the 7th century Battle of Karbala in Islamic history. But now, these artists, mostly Shia Muslims, make Hindu wedding mandaps, replicating the design of the shrine of Prophet’s grandson Imam Hussain Ali, who was killed in that war.

Hundreds of couples in the country have exchanged wedding vows under these mandaps, representing the replicas of the complex, housing one of the oldest mosques in the world and a holy site of Shia Muslims in the Iraqi city of Karbala. These replicas, also called tazia, which otherwise Shia mourners use during their annual Muharram processions, are also used for decorating venues of birthday parties.

The art of tazia making arrived in India from Central Asia and is said to have flourished during Mughal rule. One of these artisans, Mohammad Bilal Azhimuddin, speaking to IANS, said they were in Mumbai recently to design a Hindu marriage mandap at the Hotel Grand Hyatt there.

“Our clients wanted us to design something exquisite, which we did,” he said, adding that caste and creed never come into the picture.

“Our designs have been used in Hindu weddings as well as in birthday parties of children. What clients love is the exquisitely adorned minarets which have won millions of hearts and are making waves across the nation,” he said.

Many art connoisseurs have also decorated their residences, offices, theme parties and corporate events with tazia-inspired minarets and lamps, he added.

Basically, these artisans make tazias during Muharram processions. As this symbolizes sorrow to their community, they never charge any price for it. “It is a service to God,” says Mohammad Bilal Azhimuddin, who learned this craft from his father who was known as Azhimuddin Bhai (brother) in community circles.

Meanwhile, their socio-economic standards have witnessed a sudden rise as they started taking up commercial projects.

The fortunes of this tazia community changed when a leading designer of the country, Geetanjali Kaswaliwal, owner of globally reputed Anantaya which is committed to the development of ideas using local crafts evolved over centuries, watched a tazia procession for the first time in Jaipur. Anantaya is known for showcasing Unesco award-winning luxury cutting-edge objects, furniture, textiles and accessories inspired by the culturally-rich artisanal world.

She was moved by the attractive presence of tazias on the streets. Soon after, when her husband’s firm, AKFD Studio, got the order for making markers for the entire city during the Jaipur Virasat Heritage Festival 2007, she thought of using tazia-inspired designs for the city.

“We wanted to make something sculptural for this event to ensure guests bask in the glory of a cultural craft. We created a huge structure of tazia. The task was commissioned to tazia artisans who were adept with the artistry associated with it. The project was headed by Azhimuddin bhai. With nine kids, he was keen to work with us and hence we had their designs and skills which helped them earn name, fame and revenue also,” she told IANS.

It was more like a pure engagement with these artisans who created impressive spheres. Even the tazia artisans enjoyed doing something innovative, said Kaswaliwal.

Later, she brought tazia-inspired designs to her house while celebrating birthday parties of her daughters. Instead of plastic balloons, tazia artisans decorated the venue with handmade craft. The big balloons and lamps were quite authentic which caught the attention of all those present.

Kaswaliwal ensured this art was taken to the next level and asked the artisans to decorate the wedding mandap of her sister’s marriage solemnized in New Delhi in 2009.

“They did it with their heart and soul and the response was amazing. Everybody was talking of these designs and this is how their art gained wings and reached heights from where there was no looking back,” she added.

“No one in our family had any resistance anywhere when my sister’s wedding mandap was being designed by Muslim artisans. They loved their integrity and engagement with which they did the decor,” she recalled.

There is another positive side to the story. The designs crafted by tazia artisans is via paper and bamboo which gives a strong message of sustainability and ecological balance.

When asked about remuneration, Bilal said it’s the size of the mandap and party venue which defines their remuneration and the number of people also depends on the quantum of work.

“Seeing our work, we have received orders to design the Rajasthan Heritage Week Festival. Also, we did the design in 2009 when Art Institute of Chicago delegates were in India. We used bamboo-made sets which were praised a lot,” said Bilal.

“What we love is the fact that people of all castes and communities admire our work — and tell others about it. What else does a grassroots artisan want?” Bilal asked with a smile.

Akila Karnataka Nirakara Kuruginashetty Janajagruthi.

July 7, 2018 by Nasheman

By Andrea Princy. Abirami. Santhosha.

In India two people are very important for our survival, they are farmers and weavers. Farmer is for the production of food for our survival and living, Weaver is for our clothes, which is as important as the food from the farmer.

These are the two group of people who are very important for our living and also they are the ones who are facing problems these days to pay the debts. The government is planning to take initiatives to wave off the loans of the farmers. The main reason for farmers who are unable to pay back the loans to the bank is caused by the weather which changes. In some places, the land receives no rain which results in drought and in other places the land receives excessive rain which destroyed the crops. And this situation leads the farmers to their final destination of committing suicide. And for this pathetic reason, the government has the vision to wave off the farmers loans and help them in every possible.
In a similar way, the weaver’s community of 60 lakhs people in Karnataka are also facing certain problems. The ancient method of weaving through hands is taken over by the modern technology with so much of advancement and it has even being reached in the advancement of computerised these days. Hence, there are so many advancements in the weaving industry, the innocent weavers have no idea about it’s process and they have to be thought and trained from which they learn, “how to use such advanced technological machines”. If these innocent weavers aren’t given an opportunity to train and teach them, there will be a loss for 60 lakhs people and increased unemployment across Karnataka.

The certain wants of Weaver are :
1. They need a training facility.
2. They need a market to sell their products, as farmers have their own market system of selling products such as APMC Market.
Weavers are longing for a place to sell the products which they weave. For this reason, they are pleading for a Weavers Park ( Javili Park) and Textile Park. Smriti Irani, who is the Textile Minister, gave an assurance that she will open a Textile Park in Bangalkot region but no initiation and be taken by the government till date. And around 15 to 20 district weavers population will be employed if the Textile Park is constructed. And hence they are demanding to wave off the loans in banks.
There are a lot of politicians who have come from
