Uppi Relieved As The Land Is Legal

The real star & super star of Kannada Cinema Upendra facing legal hurdles for his Ruppi Resort of 17 acres & 10 Gunta is completely relieved as the court has passed a verdict that everything is legally formed. The single bench judge order was questioned by the state Government in this case. The 2 benches justice S K Mukerjee & Justice Dinesh Kumar upheld the single bench order. Upendra had bought the land in 2005 at Tavarekere Hobli Survey No.13/1 & 14 – it was an agricultural land. As the income of Upendra is more than Rs.2 lakh the purchase is illegal was the objection raised. This order was questioned by Upendra in High Court according to the Karnataka Land revenue Act 79 A abd 79B. The single bench judge passed an order that the land purchased by Upendra is within the framework of the laws of the land.

Dileep Denied Bail

Arrested Malayalam hero Dileep has been denied bail by the Kerala High Court on 29th Aug, 2017. Dileep will continue to be in Aluva sub jail. Dileep was arrested in connection with the case in which a prominent Mollywood actress was molested. The prosecution alleged that Dileep is a King Liar (incidentally the title of one of his films) and has definite links with the key accused Pulsar Suni. The High Court had denied bail earlier too to the actor. The High Court judgment has reportedly mentioned that there are evidences against Dileep. The actor has been in jail for 50 days now.

Mammootty has been decided to play Kunjali Marakkar and it was earlier heard that Amal Neerad will be the director. But in a recent interview, Amal Neerad has made it clear that he is not directing the movie. One of the prominent names rumored to be directing Kunjali Marakkar is ace cinematographer Santosh Sivan. He has directed Ananthabhadram & Urumi in Malayalam. However, there has been no official announcements on this news as yet. Mohanlal’s Odiyan’s Release Date Locked!!!

Mohanlal’s Odiyan has already created a lot of expectations with the motion poster that went viral last month.The shooting of the movie directed by V A Shrikumar Menon, has started rolling in Varanasi recently, as the title character Odiyan Manickan was in Banaras for 15 years before he returned to Thenkurissi, a village in Kerala. The Odiyan team has also locked the release date, as 30th Mar, 2018. As the film is touted to have brilliant action scenes as well as extensive special effects, the team has opted for a delay in the release date. In the movie, Mohanlal plays the last surviving member of a tribal community called Odiyan in Kerala. Mohanlal will be seen in the role of Manikyan, a man who is mastered in Odividya and will be featured in the age of 30 to 65 in multiple looks. As the character demands tremendous flexibility & agility, Mohanlal will be shedding close to 15 kilos, to attain the movie’s 1st look avatar. Odiyan will have Manju Warrier in the female lead along with Prakash Raj & Sathyaraj in important roles. While art director Prasanth Madhav will also be recreating Thenkurissi village for the shooting, renowned fight master Peter Hein will be choreographing the action sequences. Previously, Peter Hein has choreographed action sequences for Mohanlal in the blockbuster film Pulimurugan and he has also worked in upcoming film Villain.

Punyalan Private Limited will be a continuation of the 1st part and will start from where Punyalan Agarbathis ended. The movie’s female lead will be played by Pretham fame Shruthi Ramachandran. The actress will be playing the character, wife of Joy Thakkolkkaran (Jayasurya). Surprisingly Nyla Usha, who played the female lead in the prequel, will not be part of the film this time. Shruthi will be playing a prominent role and will not reprise Nyla’s role in the film. The new project will also be produced by Jayasurya & Ranjith Sankar under the banner of Dreams N Beyond.

Sekigahara, the Masato Harada directed epic about the battle that in 1,600 changed the course of Japanese history, debuted atop the Japanese Box – Office turnstiles for 26th Aug, 2017 & 27th Aug, 2017 weekend. Bowing on 360 screens with Toho & Asmik Ace co – distributing, the film earned $3.6 million on 312,000 admissions. Starring Koji Yakusho & Junichi Okada as opposing generals in the battle, Sekigahara is expected to finish with some $30 million. 2nd highest ranking among new chart entries, at #2 in earnings, was Warner’s new release; Wonder Woman opened on 596 screens, & claimed 2nd spot by earnings, with $2.4 million on 182,000 admissions. In 3 days it took $3.4 million, drawing the sort of young female fans who seldom show at Hollywood comic book films. Holding onto the #2 slot in terms of admissions, the preferred chart system in Japan, was Despicable Me 3. It recorded $2.1 million on 188,000 admissions. Now in its 6th week, with Toho – Towa distributing, the film has a cumulative total of $57 million, a record for an Illumination film in Japan.

Warner Bros.’ 3rd Korean language production, V.I.P. debuted on top of the South Korean Box – Office turnstiles. The Park Hoon – jung movie opened on Wed & earned $6.87 million from 940,000 admissions over 5 days. Starring Jang Dong – Gun, the crime drama involves the son of a high ranking North Korean official who is suspected of committing serial murders & agents that chase after him. Previous winner, A Taxi Driver slipped to 2nd, earning $3.87 million between Fri & Sun. The Showbox movie has earned a total of $80.1 million from 11.4 million admissions since its 2nd Aug, 2017 release. That makes A Taxi Driver the 11th biggest release of all time in South Korea, beating Haeundae, The Host & King And The Clown. The top 2 films accounted for 46% of the total weekend Box – Office turnstiles record. 2 other Korean releases, Lotte Entertainment’s Midnight Runners & Next Entertainment World’s horror The Mimic took 3rd & 4th place, respectively. Midnight Runners earned $3.77 million between Fri & Sun for a total of $34.1 million after 3 weekends. Mimic earned $1.75 million between Fri & Sun for a total of $7.95 million after 2 weekends. Dropping 71%, War ForThe Planet Of The Apes slipped to 5th. The Fox release earned $1.51 million between Fri & Sun to extend its total to $14.3 million after 2 weekends.

“VALERIAN” WINS QUIET WEEKEND

The return of Western movies to Chinese cinemas after a month of absence was an anticlimax. The top 10 films earned a combined $76.7 million, making it only the 20th best weekend of the year to date. Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets became the film to finally depose Wolf Warriors II after an unprecedented run Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets opened as the top film with a creditable $28.8 million, according to data from Ent Group. That total was earned on close to 80,000 screenings per day. And it included $3 million from 431 IMAX screens. Prior to this weekend, Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets had a $132 million global cumulative total. So the additional Chinese score will give it some comfort. But it may not last long. Next weekend, Dunkirk will enjoy a wide opening and take all its IMAX theaters. Wolf Warriors II, in its 5th week on release was 2nd over the weekend with $15.8 million. That extended its all -time China Box – Office turnstiles record to $810 million. After the end of the blackout period in which revenue – sharing releases of new Hollywood films are not permitted, the weekend saw 2 more. Disney’s Cars 3 drove in for a $10.6 million weekend, earned from a 4th place score on Fri, and an improvement to 3rd on Sat & Sun. It played on around 42,000 screenings per day. Baby Driver, edited by the censors, was initially given 67,000 screenings, but that total was trimmed by 10,000 screenings on each of the following days, and its score slipstreamed. It finished the weekend with $9.93 million.

This is a tribute to Celluloid Silver Screen’s evergreen actress Saira Banu whose 77th birth anniversary fell on 23rd Aug, 2017. Saira Banu was also known as Saira Bano. She was one of the most popular Indian Hindi film actresses and the wife of the evergreen actor Dilip Kumar. She had acted in many Bollywood films between 1961 & 1988.

Saira Banu was born in India to actress Naseem Banu & film producer Mian Ehsan – ul – Haq, who produced the film Phool in Mumbai & the film Wadah in Pakistan. Her maternal grandmother was the courtesan Chamiyan Bai, also known as Shamshad Begum of Delhi (not to be confused with the famous playback singer of yesteryear Shamshad Begum who was from Amritsar, Punjab). Her niece is former actress Shaheen Banu who is the daughter of her brother Sultan.

Saira Banu spent a significant part of her childhood in London, and went to a finishing school. Her maternal grandmother was from Hasanpur (Uttar Pradesh). Her paternal grandfather, Muhammad Suleman, was an architect who served as the Chief Engineer of New Delhi and was later involved in the construction of Jinnah’s Mazaar in Karachi. Her paternal grandmother, Khatoon Begum, was from Old Delhi’s Mohalla Churiwalan and a daughter of the scholar Khan Bahadur Maulvi Abdul Ahad (1849 – 1920). Her paternal grand – aunt, Khadeeja Begum, was married to the Shah Imam of Jama Masjid in Delhi, Ahmed Bukhari.

Saira Banu was 16 years old in 1960, the year she made her debut in Hindi films. She said in a programme that she had basic talent and little dancing experience. Her peers all were classically trained: which was why she wasn’t put in the top league. Saira started taking Kathak & Bharatnatyam lessons with success and trained herself professionally. Soon she became a dancer and her films flaunted more of her dance.

Saira Banu made her acting debut opposite Shammi Kapoor in the year 1961 in Junglee for which she earned her debut Filmfare nomination as “Best Actress”. The famous song from this movie “Yaahoo!!!!! Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahe” sung by Mohammed Rafi was a big success. Junglee was written by Agha jani Kashmiri, who also coached her in Urdu dialogue delivery, given his background in Urdu literature & poetry from Lucknow. Junglee also instantly made her a successful actress throughout the 1960’s as well as early 1970’s.

Saira Banu’s image was that of a romantic heroine for love stories in the 1960’s till 1967. She did one more film opposite Shammi Kapoor named Bluff Master directed by Manmmohan Desai. Some of her successful romantic films included Jhuk Gaya Aasman & Aayi Milan Ki Bela’ with Rajendra Kumar & April Fool with Biswajeet & 5 films with actor Joy Mukherjee namely Aao Pyar Karen, Saaz Aur Awaaz, Door Ki Awaz, Yeh Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai & Shagird. She did a double role in the film Yeh Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai.

Saira Banu’s 1st film to release after her marriage in 1966, was Aman opposite Rajendra Kumar and she continued to act as the lead heroine till the year 1977. But it is said that the turning point of her career was the comedy & love story Padosan in 1968 opposite Sunil Dutt, which brought her to the top league of the successful actresses and thereafter she started receiving more offers.

Her films with Navin Nischol were very successful like Victoria 203 & Paise Ki Gudiya. In an interview she quoted that she regretted missing the chance of working with Rajersh Khanna. She quoted “I was supposed to work with him in Choti Bahu (1971) but I could not because I was ill. I shot with him for 2 days and found that he was very charming, humble & a shy person”. She did earn 3 additional Filmfare nominations as Best Actress for Shagird (1967), for Diwana (1968) & for Sagina (1974).

Saira Banu’s valiant attempts to establish a reputation as an actress after Sagina & Bairaag (all 3 with Dilip Kumar) & films like Hrishikesh Mukherji’s Chaitali met with limited success although each of them were critically acclaimed. Her only film to be successful at the Box – Office turnstiles opposite her husband was Gopi. She also had stable pairing with Dharmendra which included Jwar Bata, Aadmi Aur Insaan, Resham Koi Dori, Pocket Maar, International Crook & Chaitali.

She also did Pyaar Mohabat with Dev Anand & films with Manoj Kumar, namely Shaadi, Poorab Aur Paschim & Balidaan. She established herself as a versatile actress, post her marriage, with her performances in Padosan, Victoria 203, Jhuk Gaya Aasman, Sagina, Chaitali and with each of them belonging to different genres. She was paired with Vinod Khanna in Aarop wherein the song “Naino Mein Darpan Hai” became a chartbuster in 1974. Her pairing with Sunil Dutt continued to be good at the Box – Office turnstiles with films like Nehle Pe Dehla being successful in 1976. The song “Sawan Ka Mahina Aagaya” became very popular in 1976. However, with films like Daaman Aur Aag, Mounto, Zameer, Koi Jeeta Koi Haara becoming disasters and with some of her films being kept on hold for release like Faisla, Mera Vachan Geeta Ki Kasam, Aarambh, she decided not to sign any more films.

Hence in 1976, Saira chose to end her film career. Subsequently she weathered a storm in her marriage in 1980, when her husband married a girl named Asma, which was quickly resolved. She then appeared in a cameo opposite her husband in Duniya (1984) wherein the song “Teri Meri Zindagi” became very popular. Her last film Faisla where she was cast opposite Vinod Mehra which was completed in 1976 but released in 1988.

Saira Banu married actor Dilip Kumar in 1966. Saira Banu was the 3rd highest paid actress in Hindi Cinema from 1963 – 1969 & the 4th highest paid actress from 1971 to 1976.

Actress Shaheen is her niece. She is Saira Banu’s brother Sultan Ahmed’s daughter.
Saira Banu’s husband Dilip Kumar revealed in his 2014 memoir “Dilip Kumar: The Substance And The Shadow” that she became pregnant in 1972 with their son, but at that time she developed high blood pressure in her 8th month of pregnancy and the doctors couldn’t save the baby, which had unfortunately been strangulated by the umbilical cord. After that, they never had children, believing that it was God’s will.

The famous rap style singer, dancer & actor Chandan Shetty sang for Raju Kannada Medium, “Nentru Barthare Netgiddaaga, Frendsu Barthaare Nee Soothaaga….” written by Chandan Shetty and he has recorded this song for the film. Raju Kannada Medium has Kichcha Sudeep in the guest role. K A Suresh has acquired 4 days call sheet of Kichcha Sudeep who appears as gold player with some talkie portions for the film. Kiran Ravindranath has composed the music and he continues his journey with director Naresh Kumar of First Rank Raju fame. Shekar Chandra has wielded the camera for this film.

Arya Makes His Debut In Kannada Cinema

The popular Tamil actor & producer Arya with over 12 years of stint in Tamil movies comes to Kannada Cinema for the 1st time ever. He is playing a crucial role in Raja Ratha that is in the direction of super hit Kannada film Rangitaranga director Anoop Bhandari. Anoop Bhandari’s brother Nirup Bhandari is the protagonist in the film. Recently Parthibhan acted in a Kannada film Daada Is Back, prior to that Shiva Karthikeyan appeared in a song in Vajrakaya of Dr Shivarajakumar. In this song even Telugu actor Ravi Teja also made a brief presence. Tamil super star Dhanush delivered a song for Vajrakaya in the direction of Harsha for music of Arjun Janya. The role of Arya in Kannada films has been announced at the last schedule shooting of the film. As of now the role of Arya is kept in secret. Avanthika Shetty is the female lead. Chetan Stars In P C Shekar’s Next

After marriage director P C Shekhar to Meghana in the last month, it is just one and half months later that he announced his next film with highly talented actor Chetan of Aa Dinagalu fame. As a matter of fact a big break is needed for both P C Shekhar director & actor Chetan. Raaga is P C Shekar as director & Noorondu Nenapu of Chetan as actor failed miserably on the Box – Office. Chetan completed Athiratha and it is in the post production stage. The combination of P C Shekhar & Chetan is a periodic cinema of British Empire in India. It is a thriller says Shekhar. The shoot starts from Oct, 2017, Arjun Janya scores music for the 7th film of P C Shekhar. Vaidya S of Romeo, Googly, Master Piece, Ranavikrama & Raaga is handing the cinematography.

A popular formula used in our films since years is that of 2 distinct characters having identical faces that gives rise to confusion to the other characters in the films but loads of entertainment to the viewers. Don, Hum Dono, Aakhree Raasta, Judwaa, Seeta Aur Geeta, Rowdy Rathore and many other films tackled this idea successfully. Now A Gentleman also gets added to the list. So does it manage to provide the entertainment like the aforementioned films or does it fail in entertaining the viewers, let’s analyze.

A Gentleman is about a simple, innocent guy in Miami whose life turns upside down due to a supposed case of a mistaken identity. Gaurav (Sidharth Malhotra) is doing well in his career & is quite stable financially. He is attracted to Kavya (Jacqueline Fernandez) but she finds him too boring. On the other hand, Rishi (Sidharth Malhotra) is a sexy, risk – taker gangster on the run. He has got into the bad books of the evil Colonel Vijay Saxena (Suniel Shetty) who’s trying to hunt him down. What happens next and are Rishi & Gaurav the same person or are they different is something that forms the rest of the film.

A Gentleman doesn’t waste time in introducing the characters & their respective traits. There are 2 parallel tracks in the 1st half and it manages to keep the interest going. There is a huge surprise minutes before the intermission point that is bound to catch most of the viewers unawares. You expect the film to go on a high in the 2nd half but that never happens. Logic takes a backseat and the film turns into a no -brainer. It also reminds one of the 90’s Hollywood action films. In this process, the film looks too Western and the makers should have probably Indianized it well.

Raj Nidimoru, Krishna DK & Sita Menon’s story shows promise initially but later turns haphazard. Raj Nidimoru & Krishna DK’s screenplay handles the complex narrative well in the 1st half but overall, it could have been better & more sensible. Things are too unconvincing in the film. In the Thailand heist sequence, the security officers run behind Team Rishi while the locker remains exposed in the open. Rishi exercises heavily & follows up his work out eating Ching’s noodles. Sadly, the product placement is in your face. Kavya is shocked to learn about Gaurav and gets disgusted at him but suddenly in the next scene, she gets intimate with him. Even the manner in which Colonel’s henchman Yakub (Darshan Kumaar) spares Rishi from death several times is strange. Such bewildering aspects take away the sheen. Sumit Batheja’s dialogues however are hilarious.

Raj Nidimoru & Krishna DK’s direction is weak. The screenplay itself is faulty and hence the execution anyways wouldn’t have helped much. They have given some great entertainers in the past like 99, Shor In The City & Go Goa Gone. They possess the technical knowledge and if they choose the right script, they can do wonders. Unfortunately, this is the 2nd consecutive time, after Happy Ending, that they have faltered with a weak script.

Sachin – Jigar’s music fails to make a mark. “Chandralekha” is the best of the lot. “Bandook Meri Laila” is foot – tapping but is relegated to the background. “Baat Ban Jaye” & “Laagi Na Choote” are forgettable, while “Disco Disco” is played during the end credits.

Roman Jakobi’s cinematography is great & locales of Miami, Thailand and even Mumbai are well captured. Aparna Sud’s production design is appealing. Manoshi Nath, Rushi Sharma & Niharika Jolly’s costumes are glamorous, especially the ones worn by Jacqueline Fernandez. Aarif Sheikh’s editing could have been better & sharper in the 2nd half. The action scenes are too lengthy. Cyril Raffaelli, Parvez Shaikh, George Aguilar’s action is slick & entertaining.

Performance wise Sidharth Malhotra however is apt for the role. He is convincing as the “sundar”, “susheel” Gaurav as well as the risky Rishi. Both avatars are well essayed and he is good even in action scenes. Jacqueline Fernandez looks sizzling and has an interesting character. But she doesn’t get to do much and it’s only from the middle of the 2nd half that she gets embroiled in the madness. Suniel Shetty is wasted. He deserved more screen time and could have made for a great villain. Darshan Kumaar however has a crucial part and gives an impressive performance. Rajit Kapur & Supriya Pilgaonkar (Kavya’s parents) are decent. Amit Mistry (Jignesh) & Hussain Dalal (Dikshit) raise loads of laughs.

Tail Piece: On the whole, A Gentleman surprises the audiences with the developments in the 1st half but the film goes downhill in the 2nd half completely. At the Box – Office turnstiles, it will collect the most out of all other releases but it won’t last long in either the Multiples Screens of the cities or even the Single theatres of the interiors.
