BJP leaders detained while trying to hold protest on Vidhana Soudha premises

November 20, 2014 by Nasheman

Vidhana Soudha

Bengaluru: Several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists led by BJP state president Pralhad Joshi were detained by the police as they tried to hold a protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue on Vidhana Soudha premises here on Thursday.

Leaders including former chief ministers B.S. Yeddyurappa and Jagadeesh Shettar and former ministers K.S. Eshwarappa, Shobha Karandlaje, Suresh Kumar and others stormed the Vidhana Soudha premises demanding that all “tainted” ministers be dropped from the cabinet, beside a host of other demands.

Tension prevailed on the premises and there was exchange of words between the police and the leaders, as the former refused to allow leaders to hold a protest in front of the statue. While Karandlaje, who was successful in reaching the statue, was arrested there, the other leaders were detained as soon as they entered the Vidhana Soudha premises through the East Gate.

Joshi said that stopping them from holding a peaceful protest amounted to “curbing the rights of legislators.” He said that they would hold another protest on December 2 and a rally at Belagavi during legislature session there beginning on December 9.

Another racist attack in Bengaluru; Manipuri youth beaten up by three men

November 20, 2014 by Nasheman

North East Racism

Bengaluru: In yet another incident of a racist attack, a 25-year-old Manipuri youth was allegedly attacked by three people here, reports said on Thursday.

The youth from the northeast state has registered a complaint with the police. The 25-year-old, who was badly injured has been hospitalised.

The latest incident comes a month after, three students from the northeast were beaten in October in the city for not speaking Kannada.

Bengaluru is home to around 240,000 people from the northeast. In 2012, a rumour that they will be attacked had led to a mass exodus before things were brought under control by the state government.

In a similar incident, three students, including a girl, belonging to the northeast region, were allegedly beaten up by some residents of Lajpat Nagar area of Delhi in the month of October.

According to police, the three youths are residents of Assam and are pursuing a course in photography. The incident took place when they were taking photographs in the city’s Prakash Colony.

It's official: Bangalore is now Bengaluru; 11 other Karnataka cities renamed

November 1, 2014 by Nasheman

Bangalore: Bangalore is now officially Bengaluru. Twelve cities in Karnataka woke up to new names on Saturday, which is also the 59th Karnataka Rajyotsava.

The state government issued a special gazette notification on Friday to bring the new names into effect from Saturday. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reportedly announced the change of names of the 12 cities, from his residence, according to The Hindu.

Now, Mangalore will be called Mangaluru, Bellary will be called Ballari, Belgaum will be called Belagavi, Hubli has become Hubballi, Tumkur is Tumakuru, Bijapur has changed to Vijapura, Chikmagalur to Chikkamagaluru, Gulbarga to Kalaburagi, Hospet to Hosapete and Shimoga will now be known as Shivamogga.

Bengaluru is said to be a derivation from the older name Benda-Kaal-Uru, which means ‘the city of boiled beans’.

“We have changed the names. It is now left to institutions and government bodies to make suitable changes,” law and parliamentary affairs minister T.B. Jayachandra was quoted saying by The Hindu.

While authorities have suggested that institutions must adopt the new names, some, such as the Bangalore University, are not keen.

“The name change applies only to cities and not to the institution,” Bangalore University vice-chancellor B Thimme Gowda told The New Indian Express. “When names of cities like Madras and Bombay were changed, university names remained the same,” he said.

Gowda added that the university had not received any communication on this from the government.

The central government approved the renaming of 12 Karnataka cities on 17 October, eight years after the first proposal by the state government was put forth. The ministry of home affairs formally cleared the proposal.

It was late Jnanpith awardee U R Ananthamurthy who first brought up the idea of renaming Bangalore during Karnataka’s golden jubilee in December 2005, which he suggested to then chief minister N Dharam Singh.

“I want Brand Bangalore to become Brand Bengaluru. I want the distinctive Kannada syllable ‘u’ to be on the lips of people all over the world. Let this bit of ‘ourness’ be part of our international presence,” Ananthamurthy, who passed away in August, had said, as reported by Bangalore Mirror.

Bangalore: A criminal case has been filed against a school in Bangalore where a three-year-old nursery student was sexually assaulted on Tuesday. An attendant has also been detained, the police said.

The attendant, believed to be 45, is being questioned but hasn’t been arrested yet. He had allegedly been missing till now.

The police say the school has been booked for running classes beyond the sanctioned limit; it reportedly had a licence to run only classes 1 to 6. The school is allegedly running the nursery section illegally and has been asked to explain.

There have been angry protests in Bangalore since the case surfaced on Tuesday, the third instance of sexual assault in a school in four months.

The child’s mother says she found her daughter crying when she went to pick her up from the school on Tuesday.

According to the police complaint filed by her father, the child “had signs of fever and complained to her mother that she was physically abused by someone she did not know or recognize.”

The police registered a case of rape on the father’s complaint. “We have registered a criminal case late Tuesday on a complaint by the victim’s father that his young daughter was sexually abused in the Orchid International School premises,” said Police Inspector TC Venkatesh on Wednesday. “We are checking the footage of CCTV cameras and questioning the staff and faculty,” he added.

Three months ago, Bangalore witnessed large street protests after a six-year-old child was raped at her school; two gym instructors were arrested.

Nearly 200 schools in the IT city were booked for not having safety measures in place.

Sexual assault of school girl confirmed, says Bangalore top cop

Bangalore: The sexual assault on a three-and-half-year-old girl student at a school here has been confirmed by doctors, as police today intensified the probe into the horrific incident which evoked protest from parents.

The school staff members were questioned and the CCTV footage was being examined by the police, as outraged parents thronged the campus of Orchid International School demanding answers from its authorities on the incident.

“The doctors (at a private hospital where the girl was taken for treatment yesterday) confirmed there was a slight bruise of a very small dimension, amounting to sexual assault,” Bangalore Police Commissioner M N Reddi told reporters here.

Reddi said, “There is the statement of the child and the injury and the circumstances. At this point of time, there is no other possibility. It looks like a sexual assault.”

A criminal case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012 and IPC section 376 (rape) on a complaint from the father of the child, he said.

This is the third incident of a minor girl student being allegedly sexually assaulted on school campus in the city in the last four months.

Reddi said the girl was crying when her mother picked her up from the school at Jalahalli yesterday noon and she was not behaving normal and had symptoms of fever.

While the girl initially told her mother that someone beat her up, she later said she was sexually assaulted, police said.

Reddi said it was difficult for the police to say they are clueless whether the crime happened on the school premises or outside. “Our objective is to detect the case and investigate fairly. It would be difficult for me to tell you we are clueless,” he said.

Asked about the school management clarifying that the assault took place outside the school campus, Reddi said the police would conduct a thorough investigation despite varied opinions about the crime.

“We have spoken to all possible people including the school management….the police will do a professional investigation,” he said.

Reddi said the police had contacted the school management as per the demands made by parents and its chief has been asked to visit Bangalore. The school is an inter-state institution, whose main group is from neighboring Andhra Pradesh, he said.

He also said the parents had been requested to form a small group of five to eight people, who would be in touch with the investigating authorities and management, “to tackle confusion over varied information pouring in.”

Reddi said the area and the classroom in which the girl sits also have been inspected and CCTV footage seized and being examined.

“I am shocked about the news that the incident has happened in this school where the atmosphere was so good. I have come here to know from the management what has happened. I have been to this school, security is good here,” a parent of a child studying in the school said.

“If it is true that the incident has happened in the school, then we will definitely support that child and try to get justice for her,” another parent said.

Three cases of sexual assault on minor girls in schools have occurred in the last four months in Bangalore.

An eight-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by her 63-year-old teacher inside her school premises over a period of time, with the offence coming to the fore in early August, barely a month after the “gang-rape” of a six-year-old girl at Vibgyor High School here evoked public outrage.

The Vibgyor school incident saw public erupt in anger on the streets leading to police issuing stringent guidelines to schools to ensure safety of children and government amending the Goondas Act to bring sexual offences under its ambit.

October 22, 2014 by Nasheman

The alleged assault on the child is the latest in a series of brutal gender-related crimes that have caused outrage in India.

The alleged assault on the child is the latest in a series of brutal gender-related crimes that have caused outrage in the country.

Bangalore: In a shocking incident a four-year-old girl was raped allegedly by a teacher at her school in North Bangalore on Tuesday.

The girl, an LKG student of ‘Orchids International School’ located near Jalahalli Cross, off Tumkur Road, was subjected to medical tests and later admitted to a private hospital in Yeshwantpur.

Acting on a complaint filed by her mother, North division police headed by DCP TR Suresh interrogated six male teachers in the night. Two were found on the school campus, and the others were summoned from home, police said. No arrests or detentions were made. The incident came to light when the girl’s mother noticed wounds on her private parts after she returned from school in the evening, and questioned her.

The child revealed she had been abused by a teacher. “Uncle did this to me,” she reportedly told her mother.

Police say they are questioning school staff and are waiting for a report on the child’s medical condition.

The incident comes three months after a six-year-old was raped by a staff member in another Bangalore school.

That led to street protests by parents and activists, with many accusing the school of not handling the allegations properly.

The school has eight campuses in Bangalore, besides branches in Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad. Police have registered a case against under Sections 4 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, and under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code for rape.

Father, son buried alive as house collapses amid heavy rain and superstition

October 10, 2014 by Nasheman

bangalore-rain

Bangalore: A 37-year-old man and his son were buried alive after a two-storey house collapsed in Jogupalya in Ulsoor amid heavy rains.

The deceased — M. Sumbramani and his 10-year-old son — ran out of the house to safety when they heard the neighbouring building collapse, but went in again to take out a bike and a bicycle when the wall collapsed on them. Two residents of the building that collapsed – Komathi Devi (51) and her son Kiran (16) – escaped with minor injuries.

A police officer said, “It was a 60-year-old building and a creeper had grown along its wall till the terrace. The occupants of the house had refused to remove the creeper as they considered it sacred. The creeper had dampened the wall which made it feeble and weak.”

However, Komathi Devi was adamant about residing in the building, neighbours said.

In another incident, a 40-year-old priest at the Sri Sai Temple in Basaveshwara Nagar in West Bangalore was electrocuted on Thursday morning when he was trying to pump out water that had collected in the cellar of the temple due to heavy overnight rain. The priest Shankar stepped on a live electric wire in the cellar while pumping out water and was killed at the spot.

Jayalalithaa's bail plea rejected

October 7, 2014 by Nasheman

jayalalithaa

Bangalore: In a huge blow to the AIADMK, the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday denied bail to former Tamil Nadu chief minister and AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa in the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case.

Denying bail to the convicted leader, the court said there wasn’t sufficient ground for awarding bail to her.

“The High Court has correctly rejected the bail for Jayalalithaa,” Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy, who has been leading the campaign against her, said.

Supporters of the AIADMK had earlier begun celebrations in Tamil Nadu after the prosecution in the case told the court that it had no objections to conditional bail to the AIADMK chief. Swamy said he was “surprised when I heard that the prosecution had agreed for a conditional bail for Jayalalithaa”. “The Karnataka government has something to explain on this,” he said.

Jayalalithaa has already spent ten days in the Bangalore jail where she was lodged immediately after her conviction on 27 September.

Ahead of the hearing, posters were spotted in Chennai with purported threats to kidnap natives of Karnataka staying in Chennai. The posters, reportedly from local AIADMK leader KC Vijay, carried the threat to hold the Kannadigas captive until Jayalalithaa is granted bail, Hindustan Times reported.

Jayalalithaa has been in jail ever since a special court in Bangalore sentenced her to four years imprisonment in September under the Prevention of Corruption Act (PoCA). She was also slapped a fine of Rs 100 crore in connection with the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case.
