Mangaluru: A court in Bengaluru on Tuesday extended the police custody of two of the Bhatkal based youth arrested last month on terrorism charges by two days for further interrogation.

Police said that Bhatkal based homeopathic doctor Dr. Syed Ismail Afaq and his cousin Abdus Subur were on Tuesday remanded in police custody for two more days in Bengaluru. Two other youth — Saddam Hussain and Riyaz Ahmed Sayeedi — were sent to judicial custody for 14 days.

The police, in their remand application submitted to the court, said that the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) wanted custody of the suspects to probe into their suspected role in bombings in Mumbai in 2011. The Maharashtra ATS is expected to move court soon.

The Bengaluru police had brought three of arrested Bhatkal youth — Afaq, Riyaz Ahmed Sayeedi and Abdus Subur — to Mangaluru and Bhatkal on Monday in connection with the investigation.

Sources say that the team headed by the investigating officer Omakaraiah took Sayeedi to an outlet on Kudmal Ranga Rao Road in Mangaluru from where he had reportedly sent a parcel a few months before his arrest, apart from a host of other places in the coastal city. Mr Omakaraiah said that they had visited various places in Mangaluru to collect evidences.

“People in Bhatkal are peace loving and lead a harmonious life. Tagging them as terrorist is not a right thing as they work towards the development of the town. Speaking further he said that terrorism does not have its existence only in Karnataka but has its routes across India.

“The State and Central government should work hand-in-hand to come up with strategies to curb the problem. State government will not spare terrorists. People representatives should act responsible, instead of issuing irresponsible remarks over the terror problem,” he added.

Bengaluru: Police custody of four suspected operatives of the banned Indian Mujahideen, arrested recently, was extended till February 3 by a court here today.

“Court has extended the Police custody of Dr. Syed Ismail Afaq, Abdus Saboor, Riyaz Syeedi & Saddam Hussain upto February 3, 2015 in IM Explosive Seizure case,” DCP Crime (Bengaluru) Abhishek Goyal in a tweet said.

The Police custody of all the four suspects ended today.

The fourth alleged operative was arrested on January 11 at the Mangaluru international airport before flying to Dubai.

City Police Chief M N Reddi had earlier said that the suspects were part of a terror module that was used to procure, fabricate and deliver deadly explosives.

According to them police, the alleged IM operatives transferred money through Hawala channels for funding and at least one of them attended meetings in a foreign country, where a conspiracy was hatched to manufacture and deliver deadly explosives which were probably used for blasts in different parts of the country.

Meanwhile, Dr. Afaq’s defence counsel Advocate Sultan Beary, has maintained that his client is innocent, and has alleged that he has been framed.

The person, said to be identified as Riyaz (32), a resident of Makhdoom Colony, Bhatkal was arrested from Mangalore International Airport at around 11.30 pm on Saturday January 10.

Riyaz was about to board the Jet Airways flight to Dubai when he was apprehended by the Bengaluru police.

It is said that the Bengaluru police with the help of Mangaluru CCB police arrested Riyaz based on the alleged information provided by the three persons from Bhatkal who were arrested on January 8.

“Riyaz was supposed to return to Dubai three days ago, but as we had no money for the ticket, his journey got postponed. We came to know about his arrest only through the media,” he said.

Sayeedi claimed that his son was innocent and that he never indulged in such activities and that he had been arrested without any reason.

Muslim body wants CCB, NIA to come clean on raids

Majlis-e-Islah wa Tanzeem, a social organisation run by Bhatkal Muslims, has sought to know why local leaders were not taken into confidence if the raid party knew that explosives were stored in a house in the town. Why were neighbours and the local media not informed during the raids, the Tanzeem wants to know.

It has sought to know what did the bag taken inside the house, with the help of the local police, contain. What was the need for the raid party to remain inside the small house for seven to eight hours by closing the door? the Tanzeem questioned.

It now plans to submit memorandum to the chief minister.

Muslims are Indians by choice, not only by birth: Asaduddin Owaisi in Bhatkal

December 30, 2014 by Nasheman

Asaduddin Owaisi Bhatkal

Bhatkal: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has said that those who suspect Indian Muslims’ patriotism should know that Muslims are the only community who are Indians not only by birth but also by choice.

Addressing the valedictory ceremony of the centenary celebration of the Majlis-e-Islah Wa Tanzeem, a leading social organization in Bhatkal, warned the communal forces against maligning the image of this coastal town.

Criticizing the ‘Ghar Wapsi’ re-conversion drive taken up by Hindu outfits, he said, “Instead of talking about Ghar Wapsi (‘homecoming’), let them talk about ‘black money Wapsi’. This is the land where Prophet Adam stepped his feet. We are from this land. Our faith is not so weak that we will listen to the Ghar Wapsi propaganda.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised to bring black money within a month after coming to power, and depositing Rs 15 lac in every person’s bank account. What happened to that promise now?” he questioned.

Asserting that Islam has nothing to do with terrorism and terrorist activities, he said, “I condemn the global attitude of relating violence with Islam. There is no relationship between ISIS, the terrorist organization and Islam. ISIS was born in the US.

“There are thousands of Dalit and Muslim prisoners languishing in jails for no fault of theirs. They should be released. Innocent Muslim youth should be acquited of the accusations of violence,” he opined.

He further said, “The police had warned that peace would be disrupted if I came to Bhatkal. Bhatkal is a part of India and I will keep coming here. Nobody can silence me.

“Those who call me communal should answer a few questions first. What is the reason for Muslims in India to remain backward and poor? There are Muslims in India who live under abject poverty. There are 42 percent of poor Muslims in Gujarat, 52.7 percent in Assam and 22.4 percent in Karnataka. Who is responsible for this? We are not vote bank machines. This is our land too, and we have every right to run the country and strive for its prosperity. Our children too should get education and reach the moon. Do not play politics with education. Give us scholarships and better facilities, so that we also get quality education. Do not deprive us of our fundamental rights,” Owaisi urged.

Owaisi congratulated Majlis-e-Islah Wa Tanzeem on completing 100 years and appreciated the service it has been rendering to society, especially with relief aids during natural calamities like the Kashmir floods.

Convener of the centenary celebrations committee Abdulla Damudi compered the programme while Tanzeem secretary Mohideen Altaf Kharuri proposed the vote of thanks.

Markazi Jamatul Muslimeen chief qazi Muhammed Iqbal Mullah Nadvi, Khalifa Jamath qazi Maulana Khwaja Mohideen Akrami Nadvi, Tanzeem president Muzammil Qaziya, vice-president S M Syed Parvez and others were present.
