Person who never lived in Kashmir has started a fight for Kashmiri Pandits: Naseeruddin Shah on Anupam Kher

May 28, 2016 by Nasheman

naseeruddin-shah-and-anupam-kher

Mumbai: As Narendra Modi government celebrates two years in power, veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah says citizens of the country should give more time to it before making perceptions though he feels a bit worried by the “changes made in few textbooks”. He, however, says the government is not “stupid” enough to turn the nation towards “dark ages”. He also hit out at fellow actor Anupam Kher saying that someone who’d never lived in Kashmir suddenly started fighting for Kashmiri Pandits.

“People are taking decisions and making perceptions too fast. I think we should give the government more time. But, there are few things which make me concerned, like the kind of alterations in the text books those are the things to worry about,” Shah said in an interview here.

The 66-year-old actor was in the capital to promote his film “Waiting” which released today. “I believe the people in the government are not stupid to understand the choices in front of them, either to build a modern India or to take us back into the dark ages. I think they are not stupid to take the second choice.

“Not for anything else but to at least be in power. I am not leaving the hope. If we will leave the hope it means we have lost the battle,” he added.

The three-time National award-winning actor also took potshots at Anupam Kher, who has been vocal about his fight for Kashmiri Pandits, especially their rehabilitation in the Valley, saying, “A person who has never lived in Kashmir has started a fight for Kashmiri Pandits. Suddenly, he became a displaced person.”

Shah supported noted lyricist Javed Akhtar’s statements during his farewell speech in Rajya Sabha saying nobody has the right to question a person’s love for their motherland.

“I am sad that statements like these (referring to AIMIM MP Asaddudin Owaisi) are made and then they are not even condemned. Like Javed sahab said, ‘It is his right to say ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Bharat mata ki jai’. I will say it with my choice not because somebody asks me to,’ I support him. Nobody has a right to question my love for my country,” he said.

Akhtar had slammed Owaisi for saying that he won’t chant ‘Bharat mata ki jai’ because the Constitution does not ask him to do so. He had also condemned right-wing extremists who say Muslims should go to Pakistan.

Movie Review: ‘Charlie Ke Chakkar Mein’ is an absolutely clueless movie

November 11, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Charlie Ke Chakkar Mein

Producer: Karan Arora & Picture Thought Production
Director: Manish Srivastav
Star Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Disha Arora, Amit Sial, Auroshikha Dey, Sandeep Vasudevan, Siraj Mustafa etc
Genre: Thriller
Verdict: POOR

Plot: A big delivery of ‘Charlie’ is hijacked, and the ‘bhai – log’ behind it want their ‘powder’ and the people whodunit. Naseer plays the investigating cop, as he & his colleagues sift through some incriminating ‘found footage’ of a bunch of young people sniping at each other in some kind of an underground den with graffiti scrawled on it, and bodies sprawled in it.

Aces: The sole performance Of Naseerruddin Shah as Addl. Commissioner of Police.

Minuses: Most of the other actors have been reduced to caricatures so no wonder they have just sleep walked through the whole film.

Last Word: Drugs, sex, gangsters, youngsters & above all cops. But the mix up of all this hardly gives a feeling of a good film. The entire film is clueless and leaves the audiences frantically hunting for the non – existent storyline.

I am being targeted for being Muslim; it really pains me: Naseeruddin Shah

October 15, 2015 by Nasheman

Naseeruddin Shah

New Delhi: Expressing dismay over the controversy in the wake of his participation in book launch function of former Pakistani foreign minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri in Mumbai, veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah said he was being targeted for being a Muslim.

“My name is Naseeruddin Shah and I believe that’s why I was targeted. It really pains me to say this. I have never ever been aware of my identity until now,” the celebrated actor told India Today news channel in an interview.

Shah said he was misunderstood and misreported in the media about his comments on Pakistan during the function held on Monday.

“I was quite astounded that everything I stated was interpreted as being anti-Indian and there was nothing of the sort that I actually said,” he clarified.

He said there were other people also expressing their thoughts on issues but it was his views that were being presented as if he had said something against the country.

“I do not actually understand why anything said as a compliment to Pakistan must be construed as anti-Indian. If I say Imran Khan is great, does that make Sunil Gavaskar any less a cricketer,” the Bollywood actor asked.

Emphasising that he was a proud Indian and would not allow anybody to question his patriotism, the 66-year-old actor said what eminent lawyer A.G. Noorani and veteran journalist Dileep Padgaonkar said during the function was not quoted at all even as they raised far more pertinent points than he did.

“I don’t understand why I am being picked on,” he said in the television interview.

Asked about his view on eminent writers returning their Sahitya Akademi awards to protest rising intolerance in the country under the BJP-led Central government, Shah said the protesting writers had written more strongly on what was happening in India.

During the book release function, the veteran actor regretted that performances of Pakistani artistes were disrupted in India.

“Hatemongers are unfortunately having a field day in India today,” he said, adding that awards mean nothing to him and therefore he won’t bother returning them.

On Shiv Sena’s argument that terror and cricket or music couldn’t coexist, Shah said, “The people who sponsor terror aren’t the same who bring the message of peace from across the border.”

“You have to make a difference and can’t tar everybody with the same brush,” the Bollywood actor said.

Shah is a recipient of Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi and other prestigious awards.

Movie Review: ‘Welcome Back’ is a fun filled rollercoaster ride of full on entertainment

September 16, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

welcome back

Banner: Base Industries Group
Producer: Firoz Nadiadwala
Director: Anees Bazmee
Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, John Abraham, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor, Shruti Haasan, Ankita Shrivastava, Shiney Ahuja, Paresh Rawal, Dimple Kapadia, Sakshi Maggo, Lauren Gottlieb, Reema Debnath, Supriya Karnik, Rajpal Yadav, Neeraj Vora, & Surveen Chawla
Music: Meet Bros Anjjan, Anu Malik & Abhishek Ray

Director Anees Bazmee certainly needs no special introduction as far as his mainstream filmic career goes. So much so that he has indeed delivered hit after hit films in the mainstream arena. Unlike certain director’s films you don’t have to leave your brains behind at home to watch an Anees Bazmee stamped film. And now almost more than half a decade later he has carried forward the legacy of the prequel ‘Welcome’ by bringing back its picture perfect, as far as a full on entertainment for one & all is concerned, sequel as his latest offering ‘Welcome Back’.

The intricately plotted scenario of ‘Welcome Back’ starts off with the picturesque Dubai and the grand entry of the ‘now – transformed – but – still -unmarried’ Uday Shetty (Nana Patekar) & Majnu Pandey (Anil Kapoor). Just as these dons start enjoying their reformed ‘clean’ lives as respectable members of society, there enters Babita aka Rajkumari Chandni (Ankita Shrivastava) and her gorgeous mother Poonam aka Maharani (Dimple Kapadia). Even though they claim to be the princess & Maharani of Najafgadh, the actual fact remains that they are thugs of the highest order whose main motive is to con rich men and siphon off their money. Unaware of their background, Uday & Majnu fall in love with the Rajkumari, so much so that there comes a situation when their best friendship is at stake. Just when Uday & Majnu initiate their matrimonial meet with Rajkumari & Maharani, there enters Uday’s ‘poor’ father (Nana Patekar in a double role), who ‘thrusts’ the responsibility of his daughter Ranjhana’s (Shruti Haasan) marriage to Uday & Majnu. Seizing this opportunity, Maharani lays a condition that her ‘princess’ daughter’s wedding with either Majnu or Uday will happen only after Ranjhana’s wedding. In the meantime, due to certain circumstances & situational misunderstandings, Ranjhana falls in love with Ajju bhai (John Abraham) who is a Mumbai based goon and also Dr. Ghungroo (Paresh Rawal)’s step son from Mrs. Ghungroo (Supriya Karnik). In order to create a good impression before Uday & Majnu, Ajju ‘disguises’ himself as a decent, sober, well -mannered guy when he comes to Dubai. But when Uday & Majnu discover Ajju’s true identity, all hell breaks loose and they seek the help of the deadly Wanted Bhai (Naseeruddin Shah) in order to eliminate Ajju. Things take an unexpected u – turn when they realise that Wanted Bhai’s only son (Shiney Ahuja) is not just a drug addict, but also blindly in love with Ranjhana and thereafter a comedy of errors is what forms the crux of the film.

Director Anees Bazmee certainly deserves kudos for his multiple efforts in putting up such a magnitude of film with an ensemble cast of 9 actors who are stars in their own right. The lovers of ‘Welcome’ will definitely lap up its franchise namely ‘Welcome Back’. I can safely vouch for the fact that it is a fun filled laughriot, in fact a rollercoaster ride of full on entertainment, all through the way. Besides its production values are lavish beyond imagination. Not to forget the fact that it has been shot at a very grand & most expensive locales of Dubai. And now for the ‘Kamzor Kadi’ of the film is that of a lack of a proper script which is why the film wavers at time like it is cruising on a speed breaker. But still Anees Bazmee succeeds in holding the cine goers interest by conceiving most of the non – stop hilarious scenes that keeps you in splits right till the end and the masses leave the auditorium clamouring for more. I won’t reveal those scenes and spoil your fun. In fact the highlight of the film are its comedy tracks & one – liners. A due credit also goes to its behind the scenes men namely the film’s action by Abbas Ali Moghul, “Climax” scenes conceived by Firoz Nadiadwallah, cinematography by Kabir Lal, editing by Steven Bernard,  dialogues by Raaj Shaandilyaa and above all not to forget its brilliant background score by the Late Aadesh Srivastava & musical scores by Meet Bros Anjaan, Annu Malik and above all Abhishek Ray for whom ‘Welcome Back’ happens to be his 1st musically super hit experience in the mainstream arena.

Performance wise I would like to add that every actor of ‘Welcome Back’ has tried to grab the cine goers eyeballs. But with due respect the credit goes to all the performers for having delivered their act with finesse even at the cost of hamming at the right places in the appropriate situations. But of course the top scorers are the inimitable pair of Nana Patekar & Anil Kapoor who literally bring the roof down everytime they grace the screen with their comically interluded histrionics. Next in line memorable act comes from the supremely talented Naseeruddin Shah & Paresh Rawal, Need I say anything more about the quartet of actors mentioned above. Amongst the younger generation of actors it is John Abraham who has delivered an outstanding act as the typical Mumbaiyya Tapori’. He is too good to be true both as a sane guy as well as a tapori and for once he did not have to flaunt his innerwear a la ‘Dostana’. That apart it is a real pity to see a once extremely talented actress Dimple Kapadia ham away to glory in each & every scene. Next in line in the ladies brigade are Shruti Haasan & debutant Ankita Shrivastava who had nothing much to do against the entirely male brigade show but yet they both succeeded in putting up a decently applaudable act. And last but not the least is Shiney Ahuja who has really impressed in his comeback role after having disappeared into oblivion due to his personal life controversy.

Tail Piece: For all lovers of the earlier film ‘Welcome’ I would just like to add that ‘Welcome Back’ to the party for a full on joyous ride of entertainment galore.

Movie Review: ‘Dharam Sanket Mein' is an expose of the varied myths & facts of the 2 diverse religions namely Hinduism & Islam

April 13, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Dharam Sanket Mein

Producer: Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, Sajjad Chunawala & Shariq Patel
Director: Fuwad Khan
Cast: Paresh Rawal, Naseeruddin Shah, Annu Kapoor, Gippy Grewal, Auritra Ghosh, Sharat Sonu, Alka Kaushal, Murli Sharma, Mukesh, Rushita Pandey, Sophie Choudry, Hazel Keech, Suresh Venkataraman, Jagdish Rajpurohit, Jahangir Karkaria, Alka Mehta, Gagan Gupta et al
Music: Meet Bros Anjjan, Sachin Gupta, Jatinder Shah & D J Kiran
Pro: Raindrop Media

Fuwad Khan, an ace cinematographer turned débutante director, has tackled the varied myths & facts concerning the 2 most talked about religions namely Hinduism & Islam. But was it necessary for him to get blatantly inspired by a situational Brit comedy named ‘The Infidel’ based on the same subject of 2 diverse religions criss crossing each other albeit in hilariously comic way.

Dharampal Trivedi’s (Paresh Raval) Dharam (Read religious beliefs) gets really shaken the day he opens his departed mother’s bank locker. His entire world turns upside down and he faces an identity crises dilemma. He finds an affidavit in the locker which states his origin as being born to a Muslim father.  He wants to meet his long lost father who is on his death bed in a Muslim sanitarium, but the Maulana (Murli Sharma) of the Sanitarium bars the twain to meet unless Dharampal becomes a devout Muslim. Whereas his own biological son Amit wants him to be a devout Hindu and a disciple of Swami Neela Anand Baba (Naseeruddin Shah) simply to impress his son’s prospective father – in – law. Dharam is now totally confused in a dilamatic state. So he takes the help of his friend, his immediate neighbor, to learn to be a devout Muslim, who happens to be a Muslim lawyer by the name of Nawab Mehmood Nazeem Ali Shah Khan Bahadur (Annu Kapoor). And his son Amit brings in a pandit to help Dharam to be a devout Hindu. So Dharam seeing no escape starts learning the ‘mannerisms’ of both the religions simultaneously.

Débutante director Fawud Khan has tried his best to balance the sentiments of the 2 concerned religions but his appropriate directorial skills seriously lacks finesse. So the resultant effect is neither here nor there, rather than being tackled on a serious note or treated in an amusingly comic way it becomes way too preachy. In fact the entire episodic issue of Swami Neela Anand Baba was totally uncalled for.

And the sole brownie point goes to the one liner dialogues of Alpesh Dixit, Sanjay Sharma & Vijay Desai.

Performance wise Paresh Rawal is a winner all the way and as the film rests heavily on his shoulders he has really, really delivered an absolutely honest, sincere & dedicated act. The next in line star performer is no doubt Annu Kapoor who has really left an impact with his brilliant performance. Whereas a veteran actor like Naseeruddin Shah disappoints totally. He is a total misfit in the entire mileu and his obnoxious geteup, coupled with his put off mannerisms, is an eyesore. While the rest of the actors like Gippy Grewal, Auritra Ghosh, Sharat Sonu, Alka Kaushal, Murli Sharma, Mukesh, Rushita Pandey, Sophie Choudry, Hazel Keech, Suresh Venkataraman, Jagdish Rajpurohit, Jahangir Karkaria, Alka Mehta, Gagan Gupta et al have proved to be an adequate support system just to carry the film forward.

Tail piece: If you have watched films like ‘OMG: Oh! My God’ & ‘PK’ based on similar themes, then taking a trip to a movie hall for watching ‘Dharam Sanket Mein’ will be a sheer waste of time.

Movie Review: 'Dirty Politics' is an extremely confusing, sordid & messy

March 9, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Dirty Politics

Banner: B. M. B Music & Magnetics Ltd
Producer: Nihal Farhat
Director: K. C. Bokadia
Cast: Mallika Sherawat, Jackie Shroff, Anupam Kher, Atul Kulkarni, Om Puri, Rahul Solanki, Ashutosh Rana, Rajpal Yadav, Sushant Singh, Govind Namdev, Charu Sharma & Naseeruddin Shah
Music: Aadesh Shrivastav, Robby Badal & Sanjeev Darshan

K. C. Bokadia needs no special introduction in the directional arena after having given scores of gems of movies but his return after a hiatus is highly questionable and especially his making of a dirty & seedy movie like ‘Dirty Politics’ is more highly objectionable, debatable as well as highly lamentable issue.

Now let’s get straight to the extremely confusing, sordid & messy plot. Mukhtar (Jackie Shroff) is addressing a massive crowd claiming that “He is an insaan” (a la ‘MSG – The Messenger Of God’?), and that’s why he should be made victorious in the elections. No sooner he wraps up the speech; he is arrested by 2 sincere police officers Nirbhay Singh (Atul Kulkarni) & Nischay Singh (Sushant Singh), on the charges of killing Anokhi Devi (Mallika Sherawat). Thereafter starts the flashback of events which establishes Mukhtar’s killing of Anokhi Devi and also the reason behind it. The constantly juxtaposed back & front  flashback starts off with a dance number performed by Anokhi Devi (a ‘breathtakingly gorgeous’ dancer by profession). Seeing her & her waist’s gyrations, Jan Seva Party’s headhoncho Dinanath (Om Puri) falls head over heels in love with her and wants to ‘achieve’ her at any cost. A couple of meetings later, when Om Puri becomes successful in his ‘achievement’, he then, in the flow of events, promises Anokhi Devi to be a candidate from the Merta region, something that even Mukhtar sets his eyes on. Because Mukhtar knows lot a of secrets about Dinanath, the latter becomes a helpless pawn in his hands and then, lands up officially announcing Mukhtar to be a candidate from Merta. This decision of Dinanath sets Anokhi Devi’s emotions & political ambitions on fire. That’s when she drops a bombshell on Dinanath by showing him an explosive CD that has them both in a highly compromising positions with each other. On the advice of Dinanath’s partner in crime (Ashutosh Rana), Anokhi Devi strikes a deal with Dinanath asking him for a whopping Rs. 50 crores, in return for the CD.

Director K. C. Bokadia seems to have completely lost his sensible & intelligence marbles. His experience of making intelligent & commercial movies (even with Big B) has gone for a complete toss, in ‘Dirty Politics’, en route to nowhere. The biggest atrocity is that all the veteran actors have been wasted blatantly while Bokadia sir had set his eyes & mind totally on Mallika Sherawat’s curvaceously enticing figure. The resultant effect is that everything else has gone haywire from “The Beginning” to “The End”. I rest my case at this juncture. And yes one last point. This time too I pity the latest scapegoat, Mr. Moneybags namely Nihal Farhat.

Performance wise Mallika Sherawat looks sexy as usual in lieu with her obscenely lensed dance movements. I think it is the directors & choreographers who are responsible for Mallika’s non – talent and than hardcore crics like me are forced to comment that Mallika can’t act for nuts. So Ms. Skin Show it is high time that you hone up your acting skills before one & all bid you adieu forever. While the rest of the gang of veteran actors like Jackie Shroff, Atul Kulkarni, Om Puri, Ashutosh Rana, Rajpal Yadav, Govind Namdev, Sunil Pal & Naseeruddin Shah et al should be ready to hang up their histrionics boots, if they continue to waste their time & efforts in silly projects like ‘Dirty Politics’. Thank God – The Almighty that at least Sushant Singh in tandem with Anupam Kher have ended up delivering a bit convincing performance.

Tailpiece: Warning:- Suitable & recommended only for the hardcore Mallika Sherawat fans only!!!!! You know what I mean.
