Indian scientist Shrinivas Kulkarni wins Dan David Prize

May 18, 2017 by Nasheman

Shrinivas Kulkarni

Indian scientist Shrinivas Kulkarni has won the prestigious Dan David prize for his contribution in the field of astronomy.

Kulkarni is a professor of astrophysics and planetary science at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

He is a pioneer and leading figure in time-domain astrophysics across the electromagnetic spectrum who built and conducted the Palomar Transient Factory, a large-area survey of the night sky in search of variable and transient phenomena.

The survey has turned up thousands of stellar explosions, transforming our knowledge of the transient sky.

The USD 1 million prize is a joint international enterprise endowed by the Dan David Foundation headquartered at Tel Aviv University.

Kulkarni, with this honour, joins other prominent Indian laureates of the Dan David prize including author Amitav Ghosh, music conductor Zubin Mehta and renowned chemist CNR Rao.

The honour will be conferred at a festive awards ceremony here on May 21 in the presence of the laureates.

Three Dan David prizes of USD 1 million each are given every year in the categories of “Past”, “Present” and “Future” to people around the world who have made outstanding contributions to humanity in the sciences, humanities, or through their work in civil society.

The recipients in the “Past” category are generally drawn from the field of history, archaeology, paleontology, biography, etc; the “Present” from arts, media, policy, economics, etc; and the “Future” from one of the exact or natural sciences.

The “Future” category this year is dedicated to astronomy and will be shared by Kulkarni, Andrej Udalski of the University of Warsaw and Neil Gehrels of NASA for their discoveries on time-domain astrophysics.

The prize, now in its 16th year, was established by the late Dan David, an international businessman and philanthropist who envisioned a project that would extend beyond traditional academic categorisations.

This vision is fulfilled by a “roving” formula that seeks to reward achievements in all fields of human endeavour rather than in a fixed set of categories.

In order to encourage and foster new generations of scholars, the laureates are required to donate 10 per cent of their prize money towards scholarships for graduate or post- graduate researchers in their respective fields.

Zomato reports data theft of 17 million users

May 18, 2017 by Nasheman

Zomato

New Delhi: Online restaurant guide and food ordering app Zomato today said about 17 million user records have been stolen from its database.

The stolen information contains user email addresses and ‘hashed’ passwords but no payment information or credit card data has been stolen/leaked, Zomato said in a blogpost on its website.

The startup’s disclosure comes at a time when the world is grappling with the cyber attack by ransomware ‘WannaCry’, which has impacted IT networks in over 150 countries.

Zomato said the data theft was discovered recently by its security team, without indicating the exact time or if it was related to the ‘WannaCry’ ransomware attack.

“Our team is actively scanning all possible breach vectors and closing any gaps in our environment. So far, it looks like an internal (human) security breach – some employee’s development account got compromised,” it said.

Assuring its users that their credit card information on Zomato is fully secure, the company said “payment related information on Zomato is stored separately from this (stolen) data in a highly secure PCI Data Security Standard (DSS) compliant vault”.

As a precaution, Zomato said it has reset passwords for all affected users and logged them out of its app and website and all of the user accounts were secure.

It, however, encouraged users to change password for any other services where they were using the same password.

Zomato said over 120 million users visit its site every month.

The company said it will be actively working to plug any more security gaps in its systems.

ICJ orders Pakistan to suspend Kulbhushan Jadhav’s death sentence

May 18, 2017 by Nasheman

Kulbhushan Jadhav

The Hague: The International Court of Justice on Thursday asked Pakistan to suspend the death sentence of Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav.

The order was announced by ICJ president Ronny Abraham in a public sitting, 10 days after India approached the UN’s top court for “provisional measure” of protection — an interim relief — in the Jadhav case.

The circumstances of Kulbhushan Jadhav’s arrest remains disputed, said the ICJ judge.

He added that India should have been granted consular access as per Vienna convention.

In a public hearing on Monday, India accused Pakistan of violating the Vienna Convention by denying consular access to Jadhav and pronouncing him guilty of espionage in a “farcical trial”.

The Indian legal team represented by Deepak Mittal, who heads the Pakistan division of External Affairs Ministry, demanded immediate annulment of Jadhav’s death sentence amid fears that he may be executed even before the world court pronounced its decision.

Pakistan had, however, rejected the Indian argument on the ground that New Delhi had no right to invoke the jurisdiction of the ICJ and that the Vienna Convention does not provide for matters relating to spies, terrorists and those who indulge in espionage.

Jadhav was awarded the death sentence by a Pakistan military court in April, a year after he was arrested on espionage charges.

Islamabad has rejected 16 Indian requests for consular access to the former Indian Navy officer, held at an unknown prison in Pakistan.

Low expectations as Syria talks resume in Geneva

May 16, 2017 by Nasheman

Sixth round of United Nations-backed negotiations resumes in Swiss city but hopes for a breakthrough remain dim.

Dozens+of+civilians+killed+in+Syria

by Al Jazeera

A new round of Syria talks got off on Tuesday in Geneva amid low expectations, the latest United Nations push to resolve the country’s long-running conflict.

Five previous rounds of United Nations-backed negotiations have failed to produce concrete results and hopes for a major breakthrough remain dim.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has strengthened his position on the ground, with the rebels reeling from a major setback in the capital Damascus.

Assad has also recently called the Geneva process “null”, telling a Belarusian TV network that it had become “merely a meeting for the media”.

Assad’s comments, coupled with uncertainty over the United States’ position on Syria, had made “diplomats highly skeptical over the [impact of the talks] in Geneva”, said Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Jamjoom, reporting from the Swiss city.

“In fact, it is the most amount of skepticism that I have heard from diplomats involved in this process,” he said.

‘Four baskets’

The UN negotiations are focused on finding a political solution and will concentrate on four separate areas, or “baskets” of issues: governance, a new constitution, elections and combating “terrorism” in the war-ravaged country.

It is the first meeting after the so-called “de-escalation zones” were agreed to by Turkey, Russia and Iran at a separate diplomatic track in Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana, earlier this month.

Staffan de Mistura, the UN envoy to Syria, dismissed suggestions that the Astana negotiations were overshadowing the Geneva talks.

“We’re working in tandem,” he told reporters on Monday.

Bashar al-Jaafari, the head of the Syrian government delegation was holding an initial meeting with de Mistura at the UN on Tuesday.

The main opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC), led by Nasr al-Hariri and Mohammad Sabra, was due to meet the UN envoy later in the day.

Worries

De Mistura, who has lasted as Syria envoy far longer than his two predecessors, has consistently tried to resist pessimism.

The alternative to talks is “no discussion (and) no hope”, he said.

The envoy said he wanted to drill down on several issues in hopes of generating solid proposals, but one issue – Assad’s fate – remains a major roadblock.

The HNC has insisted the president’s ouster must be part of any political transition, a demand unacceptable to the Syrian government.

“Diplomats worry that if de Mistura is not able to come away with something significant from this round of talks, then the whole Geneva process could collapse all together,” Jamjoom said.
