FIR against cricketer Mohammed Shami for domestic violence

March 9, 2018 by Nasheman

An FIR was on Friday registered against Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and four other members of his family on the basis of a complaint filed by the bowler’s wife Hasin Jahan, who made claims of adultery, torture and threats of being killed, reports ANI.

Hasin Jahan had on Thursday lodged a police complaint against him and his family members at a Kolkata police station. She had earlier posted screenshots of alleged conversations between Shami and multiple women. Jahan had also shared some photos of the bowler as “evidence” to support her allegations.

The Indian cricketer has been booked under sections 498A (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 323 (Causing hurt), 307 (Attempt to murder), 376 (Punishment for rape), 506 (Criminal intimidation), 328 (Causing hurt by means of poison, etc., with intent to commit an offence.), 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC.

Meanwhile, Shami has defended himself saying, “All these accusations made against me are baseless. They have no meaning. She said that this has been happening for five years, the fact is that we have been married just for four years.”

“If this (the abuse) has been happening since five years then why did it come out now. Why did it take five years for it to come out. According to me, this is a well thought out conspiracy against me. I want to remain just as normal as you’ve always seen me. On Holi and every other festival, I’ve been with my family. Spent time with my daughter and wife. Even after my wife was trolled so much in the past I stood by her. And I would like to stand by her today as well,” he told news agency ANI.

Top cop Roopa Moudgil releases music video to inspire women

March 9, 2018 by Nasheman

Firebrand police officer D Roopa Moudgil, who shot into the limelight with her report on alleged preferential treatment to sidelined AIADMK leader Sasikala in jail, has shown another side to her personality by releasing a music video to inspire women.

“Proud to release my music video. This should be the besttribute I could have given to women on International Women’sDay,” she told PTI in an interview here after the video was released yesterday.

The video features her singing ‘Tora Man Darpan Kehlaye’, a popular song from the 1965-Meena Kumari and Dharmendra starrer ‘Kaajal.’

“The video is a collage of still photos, news videos andvisuals featuring me. The audio recording was done in half anhour and video shooting in four hours.

This was done for a cause and free of cost,” Moudgil said.

Asked why she chose this song, the officer said it continues toinspire her, which speaks about the power of mind.

Moudgil first came into the limelight when as Dharwad SP she arrested the thenMadhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti after rushing toBhopal with her team.

Bharti was arrested in connection with a 10-year-old non-bailable criminal case in which she was accused of hoisting the national flag at Dharwad’s communally sensitive Idgah Maidan on Independence Day.

In recent months, Moudgil’s report as DIG(Prisons) laying bare alleged irregularities in the Parapana Agrahara Central Jail here, including preferential treatment to Sasikala, had stirred a hornet’s nest.

Sasikala is in jail serving her four-year-term in a disproportionate assets case.
The officer said the lyrics of the song has always inspired her and continues to do so.

“Your mind is like the mirror. It is all in the mind – happiness, sadness, success, failure. If you can think you can, you surely will … Tora Man Darpan Kehlaye,” she said.

The music composer is Alen who has done music for many Kannada films.

Replying to a query, Moudgil said she did the video at the request of Shruthi Rao, who is a musician and radio jockey.

Besides singing, she also has learnt Bharatanatyam and classical music.

“MEP is not seeking alliance, will fight elections on our own:” Dr. Nowhera Shaikh

March 9, 2018 by Nasheman

All India Mahila Empowerment Party’s (MEP) President Dr. Nowhera Shaikh on Friday set aside the rumour mills about her party seeking political alliance and said that MEP does not want to go into any kind of alliance. She said the party wants to contest elections on its own.

Dr. Shaikh also said that her party is confident of winning over 150 seats, in its maiden elections.

Addressing a press conference at the city’s Leela Palace, the business women turned politician said that there are a lot of offers from big political parties seeking a poll alliance with MEP, but she has declined all such offers.

She said that “the Karnataka elections will be a warm-up. We intend to contest all the Lok Sabha seats and make a mark”.

Dr. Shaikh also said that MEP is not just a party for Muslims, but for everyone, irrespective of their caste and creed. She said the party is contesting elections to create an impact in people’s lives, and promised interest-free loans for taxi drivers and farmers of the state if they come to power.

Strikes resume in Eastern Ghouta as aid convoy enters

March 9, 2018 by Nasheman

Air strikes target Eastern Ghouta’s Douma just after convoy of 13 trucks with food supplies crosses into besieged area.

The previous attempt to deliver aid on Monday fell through due to fighting [File: Bassam Khabieh/Reuters]

by Al Jazeera

Air strikes have hit Douma in Syria’s rebel-held Eastern Ghouta just after 13 trucks of food aid had crossed into the enclave, heading for the town, opposition activists and a monitor has said.

The development came on Friday after an overnight pause in fighting encouraged the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to send the convoy in, that had previously been delayed due to violence.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) had previously said that the besieged enclave had witnessed no air strikes for the first time in the last 10 days. Shortly after the aid convoy crossed into the enclave on Friday, however, the monitor said air strikes had resumed.

Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr, reporting from the Lebanese capital of Beirut, said on Friday that the aid was enough for 12,000 out of 400,000 people in the area.

“The ICRC are saying that they have positive indications that a bigger convoy will be allowed in the coming days,” she said, prior to the reports that air raids had resumed.

“But it is unlikely to include any medical supplies, because the government does not want rebels to be treated.”

In less than two weeks, the Syrian army has retaken nearly all the farmland in Eastern Ghouta, under cover of near-ceaseless shelling and air strikes, leaving only a dense sprawl of towns – about half the enclave – still under rebel control.

SOHR on Friday said at least 931 civilians have been killed since February 18. According to Doctors Without Borders (MSF), more than 1,000 people have been killed.

‘Safe routes’
UN aid agencies have pleaded with the Syrian government and its ally, Russia, to halt the campaign and allow access.

Damascus and Moscow have both said the assault is needed to stop rebel shelling of Damascus.

The UN estimates that 400,000 people live in rebel-held areas of Eastern Ghouta. The government and Russia’s military have opened what they say are safe routes out of the enclave, but nobody has left yet.

Damascus and Moscow accuse the rebels of shooting at civilians to prevent them from fleeing the fighting into government areas.

Rebels deny this and say the area’s inhabitants have not crossed into government territory because they fear persecution.

Biplab Kumar Deb sworn in as new CM of Tripura

March 9, 2018 by Nasheman

Agartala: Biplab Kumar Deb today took oath as the chief minister of the first BJP government in Tripura, ending the 25-year rule of the Left Front.

Governor Tathagata Roy administered the oath of office and secrecy to Deb at a function at the sprawling Assam Rifles ground which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah.

Jishnu Deb Burman of the BJP was sworn in as the deputy chief minister. Deb Burman is yet to be elected as an MLA as polling in his Charilam (Scheduled Tribe) constituency was postponed due to the death of the CPI(M) candidate. The election to the seat is scheduled to be held on March 12.

Seven other ministers, five from the BJP and two from the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura(IPFT), a BJP ally, including its chief N C Debburman also took oath as ministers. Ratan Lal Nath, Sudip Roy Nurman, Pranajit Singha Roy, Manoj Kanti Deb and the lone woman in the government Santana Chakma are from the saffron party.

Apart from N C Debburman, IPFT general secretary Mevar Kumar Jamatiya was the other minister from his party. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and senior BJP leaders L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi were present at the swearing-in ceremony.

Chief ministers of BJP-ruled states – Vijay Rupani (Gujarat), Shivraj Singh Chouhan (Madhya Pradesh), Sarbananda Sonowal (Assam) and Raghubar Das (Jharkhand) were among others who attended the function. Outgoing Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar also attended the event. Giant posters bearing images of Modi and Shah dominated the landscape in Agartala.

From the airport to the venue, BJP flags lined up both sides of the street, as party workers wearing saffron colour clothes celebrated in the streets. Security was heightened in the capital city as the prime minister and many other dignitaries attended the ceremony.

“A 100-ft-long stage was erected for the big function. This is a big day for us as it marks a political transition for the state. The victory has been made possible by the development work of Modiji that has inspired our workers in Tripura to work for a change,” BJP general secretary Ram Madhav told PTI here.

The alliance had won the Assembly elections with a two-thirds majority in the 60-member House. The BJP had bagged 35 seats and the IPFT eight of the 59 seats that went to polls. Forty-eight-year-old Deb had staked claim before the governor on March 6 to form the government. The governor had then invited him to do so. Deb, a long-time RSS volunteer, has been largely credited with the BJP’s turnaround in the state.

In a landmark decision, Supreme Court upholds passive euthanasia with guidelines

March 9, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi: In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court today recognised ‘living will’ made by terminally-ill patients for passive euthanasia. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra said passive euthanasia and advance living will are “permissible”.

The bench, also comprising justices A K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan also laid down guidelines as to who would execute the will and how the nod for passive euthanasia would be granted by the medical board. The apex court said that advance directives for terminally-ill patients could be issued and executed by the next friend and relatives of such person after which a medical board would consider it.

The top court said that directions and guidelines laid down by it and its directive shall remain in force till a legislation is brought on the issue.

The CJI, while reading out the judgment, said that though there were four separate opinions of the bench but all the judges were unanimous that the ‘living will’ should be permitted since a person cannot be allowed to continue suffering in a comatose state when he or she doesn’t wish to live.

The top court had in 2011 recognised passive euthanasia in Aruna Shanbaug case by which it had permitted withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment from patients not in a position to make an informed decision. The bench was hearing a PIL filed by NGO Common Cause, saying safeguards were needed while taking a decision by medical boards to withdraw life support of a terminally-ill patient.

On January 15, 2016, the Centre had said the 241st report of the Law Commission stated that passive euthanasia should be allowed with certain safeguards and there was also a proposed law –Medical Treatment of Terminally Ill Patient (Protection of Patients and Medical Practitioners) Bill, 2006.

ILEANA DCRUZ TALKS ABOUT HER CHARACTER IN ‘RAID’

Ileana Dcruz will be seen playing the role of Ajay Devgn’s wife in Raj Kumar Gupta’s directorial venture, Raid. Set in 1981 Lucknow, Raid is based on one of the biggest income tax heists that changed the course of history! From her debut in rom com Barfi or showcasing her comic timing in Mubarakaan, the actress has always attempted to play a varied choice of characters. Ileana says “Even though the film is about the raid with Ajay (Devgn) as an income tax officer, I do have a pivotal role. I admit, in terms of footage, it’s not large, but it’s an interesting part of the film. My character is not a demure biwi from the 80’s, she is sensible, speaks her mind & is quite the force behind him. There’s no plan as of now, but I’d love to work with Ajay again because he’s been doing a lot of content driven films and is a nice, positive person to hang out with. On the sets, he was always chatting with his daughter (Nysa) or son (Yug) and since I was invariably listening in, I now feel I know his whole family.” Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, Kumar Mangat Pathak & Abhishek Pathak, Raid is directed by Raj Kumar Gupta. The film releases on 16th Mar, 2018.

Tripura’s Manik Sarkar, wife to make CPI(M) office their new home

March 9, 2018 by Nasheman

Agartala: Tripura’s outgoing chief minister Manik Sarkar will be Thursday shifting to his new residence–the CPI(M) state committee office.

Sarkar, who has ruled the state for 20 years, is in the process of checking out of his official residence on Marx-Engels Sarani, about 500 metres from his new home, CPI(M) state party secretary Bijan Dhar told reporters.

“He would be moving in to the party office in a few hours. Sarkar would be living in one room of the party office guest house with his wife Panchali Bhattacharya,” he said.

CPI(M) Office Secretary Haripada Das said the veteran leader had asserted that he would “eat what is cooked in the party office kitchen”.

“He has already sent packets of books and clothes and some CDs to the party office. Sarkar might shift to a government quarter if he is allocated one by the new government,” Das said.

Sarkar’s wife had earlier told PTI that she would be donating Marxist literature and books to the party office library and the Birchandra Central library here.

The couple has no children.

The BJP had demolished the Left citadel in the recently concluded Assembly election in Tripura, ending 25 years of uninterrupted rule of the CPI(M)-led Left Front and the 20-year reign of Sarkar.

Sonia attacks Modi government, says freedom under ‘sustained assault’

March 9, 2018 by Nasheman

Mumbai: UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Friday launched a direct attack against the Modi government, alleging that freedom of the people was “under systematic and sustained assault” as provocative statements from the ruling establishment were neither random nor accidental but “part of a dangerous design”.

Delivering the keynote address at the India Today Conclave 2018 here, the former Congress President all that was being done by attempts to rewrite history, falsifying facts and attacking nation builders.

“Our society, our freedom all are now under systematic and sustained assault. Make no mistake about it. This is a well sort out project long in the making to refashion the very idea of India,” Gandhi said.

“The freedom to think for oneself and differ and degree and to meet or marry according to ones wishes all this and more are under attack.

“Provocative statements from the ruling establishment are not random or accidental. They are part of a dangerous design,” she said and added that vigilante mobs and private armies have been let loose with state patronage.

She said callous remarks were being made about changing the Constitution of the country that “point to a deliberate attempt to subvert the very essence of India”.

“Parliamentary majority is being interpreted as a licence to stifle debate. Our freedoms are under attack. Our people are increasingly impatient,” Gandhi said.

She asserted that it was not in her nature to be a “voice of gloom and doom but we need to see things the way they are”.

“The evidence of this new and deeply troubling direction is there for every one to see. Fear and intimidation are the order of the day, alternative voices are being silenced. In far too many cases through violence and even murder.”

She spoke about the violence against Dalits and minorities saying there was “shocking insensitivity to atrocities on Dalits”.

“Society has been polarised with an eye for winning elections. Religious tensions are being fueled.”

Gandhi also took a dig at Modi for his frequent coining of acronyms in the name schemes and government programmes.

“We need to move fast, but fast, F.A.S.T., cannot stand for First Act, Second Think. Acronymising can be contagious,” she said to a laughter from the audience.

“India is a great country, a wonderful country, let us protect it, cherish it,” Gandhi said, ending her speech to a loud applause.
