Swamy calls Adani ‘biggest NPA trapeze artiste’; group clarifies position

March 6, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi: BJP MP Subramanian Swamy on Tuesday dropped a bad loan bombshell on industrialist Gautam Adani, calling him the “biggest NPA trapeze artiste in PSUs”, but the group clarified that it had diligently and regularly serviced all its debt.

In a widely commented and shared tweet, Swamy said Adani, believed to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, should be made accountable or he would file a Public Interest Litigation in the court for recovery of bank loans from him.

“The biggest NPA trapeze artiste in PSUs is Gautam Adani. It is time he is made accountable or a PIL is inevitable,” Swamy tweeted.”

“The singular critical test for debt is its regular servicing — something which the Adani Group has implemented diligently, since its inception,” the company clarified in an official statement.

It said the group’s dependence on public sector banks for long-term borrowings is less than 50 per cent at about Rs 34,000 crore and it is regularly serviced.

“Adani Group has created world class assets and aggregate net asset block of Indian operations stands at over Rs 110,000 crore. Aggregate net worth of the listed entities stands at over Rs 40,000 crore and aggregate EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) stands at Rs 24,000 crore,” the company statement said.

Over the last 20 years, Adani Group has created “world class projects” in the areas of port and logistics, power generation, power transmission, agri business, mining and renewable generation.

The company statement said it provides direct employment to over 11,000 people and contributes “significantly to the exchequer and the economy”.

However, according to Bloomberg data, as of September 2017, Adani Power had a total debt of Rs 47,609.43 crore, Adani Transmission Rs 8,356.07 crore, Adani Enterprises Rs 22,424.44 crore and Adani Ports Rs 20.791.15 crore.

The ports tycoon and his family’s net worth was believed to be $11 billion in 2017 — making him the 10th richest man in India, according to Forbes.

PMLA case: Lalu’s daughter Misa Bharti, husband granted bail

March 5, 2018 by Nasheman

New Delhi: A special court here today granted bail to RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s daughter Misa Bharti and her husband in a money laundering case.

Special Judge Arvind Kumar granted the relief to Bharti and her husband Shailesh Kumar, who appeared before the court in pursuance to summons issued against them, on a personal bond of Rs two lakh with a surety of a like amount each and directed them not to leave the country without prior permission of the court.

The two had moved bail applications. During the hearing, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) opposed the bail plea of the accused, saying they indulged in a “very serious” economic offence.

“Persons on such a post are committing such kind of activities which are totally against the nation,” ED counsel Atul Tripathi said.

The court asked if the probe agency had arrested the couple during the case investigation to which the ED replied in the negative.

This prompted the court to ask ED, “Why do you now want the court to take them in custody?”

The court had on February 8 issued summonses against Bharti, her husband and her firm Mishail Packers and Printers as accused in the case after taking cognizance of the charge sheet filed by the ED.

The ED had on December 23 filed its final report against Bharti and her husband Shailesh Kumar.

The agency had earlier attached a Delhi farmhouse of the couple in connection with its money-laundering probe.

The farmhouse, located at 26, Palam Farms in south Delhi’s Bijwasan area, was attached provisionally under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

It belonged to Bharti and Kumar and was “held in the name of M/s Mishail Packers and Printers Private Limited”, the central probe agency had said.

“It was purchased in 2008-09, using Rs 1.2 crore involved in money laundering,” it had alleged.

The agency had raided the farmhouse and a few other locations in July last year as part of its probe against two brothers — Surendra Kumar Jain and Virendra Jain — and others, who were alleged to have laundered several crores of rupees using shell companies.

The Jain brothers, currently on bail, were arrested by the ED under the PMLA.

The ED had also arrested Rajesh Agrawal, a chartered accountant who had allegedly mediated and provided a cash amount of “Rs 90 lakh to the Jain brothers in advance so as to invest in M/s Mishail Packers and Printers Pvt Ltd as share premium”.

One of the firms that the arrested duo dealt with was Mishail Printers and Packers Pvt Ltd, according to the ED.

Bharti and her husband are alleged to have been directors in this firm in the past.

“The company, M/s Mishail Packers and Printers, was registered at 25, Tughlak Road, New Delhi till the shares were bought by Bharti.

“It was only during 2009-10 that the address was changed to Farm no. 26, Palam Farms, VPO Bijwasan, New Delhi. Bharti and Kumar were the directors of the company during the relevant period,” the ED had said.

The ED had alleged that the Jain brothers, Agrawal and the daughter and son-in-law of the former Bihar chief minister were the “key persons behind the laundering of Rs 1.2 crore”.

UK mosques open doors to homeless as temperatures plunge

March 3, 2018 by Nasheman

by Anealla Safdar, Al Jazeera

Several mosques in the United Kingdom and Ireland are opening their doors to the homeless as icy weather continues to bite, with temperatures hovering below zero degrees.

Concerns for vulnerable people grew on Friday as the Met Office issued a red alert for snow – the highest level of warning – for parts of southwest England and south Wales.

Yellow and amber warnings were in place across the UK on Friday and into the weekend, with Storm Emma bringing heavy snow and strong winds.

“The temperature is pretty severe, so we thought, ‘Why don’t we do something to help?'” Rabnawaz Akbar, a trustee of Makki Masjid in the northern city of Manchester, told Al Jazeera.

Over the past couple of days, a handful of volunteers have camped out at the place of worship, providing food and shelter to Manchester’s homeless.

The mosque is also offering its shower facilities to those seeking a place to stay.

Because the mosque is situated in a predominately South Asian area, the meals on offer include traditional Bangladeshi and Pakistani meals such as rice and curried chicken.

Akbar said homelessness in Manchester is growing.

“Austerity measures over last eight years mean the support services that people need are not there any more,” he said. “This results in people sleeping rough. The solution is not just about people having a roof over their heads. Some of these people have mental health issues, they are domestic violence victims, drug addicts or undocumented immigrants – they have no recourse to public funds.

“To make sure they are off the street, you need support services around them, not just give them somewhere to stay for a night. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts at local authorities, [councils] do not have the resources.”

Jamie was among four people who slept in the mosque on Thursday evening.

“I’m an addict. I’ve never been in a mosque in all my life,” he said. “I was in two minds over whether to get myself some heroin or crack, so that I could be okay for the night. As I was thinking about this, a guy came from the side and said, ‘You’re homeless, would you like to spend the night in a mosque?’

“They made me feel very welcome, gave me something to eat, to drink. Something that the basic council can’t even provide for us.”

Jamie said that the media often portrays mosques in a negative manner.

“You always get the stereotypical [portrayal] of mosques … Not everybody is like that. I’ve not been encouraged to be radicalised. It’s ‘Are you hungry? Are you okay?’.”

‘15,000 homeless by 2026’
Leeds Grand Mosque, Oldham Mosque, Finsbury Park Mosque, Canterbury Mosque and Dublin’s Clonskeagh Mosque, which is part of the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland, have also opened their doors to the homeless.

“We will have a security team on duty at night, and maintenance teams have been alerted to make sure there is sufficient heating in the building, especially late at night,” Summayah Kenna, head of community welfare at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland, told Dublin’s 98FM radio.

In a report at the end of January, Crisis, a charity working to end homelessness, described the rising number of people living without shelter as a “catastrophe”.

According to the government, around 5,000 people could be found sleeping rough on any given night in autumn last year, more than double the 2010 number.

Crisis said the number of people sleeping rough is currently around 8,000 and will rise to 15,000 by 2026 “if nothing changes”.

Gauri Lankesh murder case: Special Investigation Team arrests Hindu Yuva Sene activist

March 3, 2018 by Nasheman

In a major breakthrough in the journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh murder case, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) carried out its first arrest on Friday afternoon.

KT Naveen Kumar, 37, who was arrested on February 18 by the Bengaluru police for illegal possession of bullets, has been named as the first accused in the case.

The SIT arrested KT Naveen Kumar, of Maddur in Mandya, after informing a magistrate’s court in Bengaluru that it had found evidence of his involvement in the murder of Gauri Lankesh in the course of the investigation of the illegal arms case for which he was arrested on February 18.

The SIT initially sought a warrant for the arrest of KT Naveen Kumar in the case – shortly after he was remanded to judicial custody in the illegal arms case – by citing voluntary statements given by a few of Kumar’s friends about his links to the Gauri Lankesh murder.

The SIT gave the court a sealed copy of a confession statement given by KT Naveen Kumar about his involvement in the murder.

Gauri Lankesh, 55, was shot down with a 7.65 mm country made pistol in the drive way of her home in west Bengaluru on the evening of September 5, 2017.

Lankesh, the Editor of “Lankesh Patrike”, was shot dead by an unidentified man wearing a helmet while the suspect who rode the motorcycle was also not identitfied.

Investigations by the SIT has unearthed CCTV footage of a man conducting a recce of the home of the journalist a few hours before her killing. The physical structure of the man found conducting the recce in the CCTV footage has a close resemblance to that of Kumar.

The Karnataka government had set up the SIT to probe the journalist-activist’s killing.
