France beat Peru 1-0 to enter World Cup pre-quarters

June 22, 2018 by Nasheman

Kylian Mbappe became France’s youngest goal-scorer in FIFA World Cup history as they beat Peru 1-0 in a Group C match here on Thursday to enter the pre-quarterfinals.

Mbappe’s 34th-minute strike from close range was the lone goal scored in the match at the Ekaterinburg Arena as Peru’s hopes to reach the second round after suffering second consecutive loss. Peru are with zero points, while Denmark are second with four points.

France, who were criticised for their style of play during their 2-1 win over Australia, top the table with six points and will meet Denmark in their third and final group stage game.

Against Peru, France did well not to leave their qualification to the game against Denmark, who were held 1-1 by Australia earlier in the day.

Didier Deschamps-coached France, who switched to a 4-2-3-1 with the inclusion of striker Olivier Giroud and midfielder Blaise Matuidi, who played in an offensive role, saw the midfield coordinating well with the attack, which aided their fluid game.

Left-back Lucas Hernandez moved up and down to give an extra member in their attacking build-up as the team began to question Peru’s defence from the beginning.

Midfielder Paul Pogba launched a long-range effort from 30 yards out which forced goalkeeper Pedro Gallese to dive to his right to ensure that the ball goes wide of the left post in the 12th minute.

Two minutes later, Raphael Varane’s header off a corner missed the target by a slight margin, going wide of the right post.

Gallese then blocked a right-footed drive from Antoine Griezmann after Giroud brought down an aerial ball from the deep in the 17th minute.

Peru took time to get some good touches in the game. Veteran centre-forward Paolo Guerrero, who returned to the starting line-up after missing the Denmark game in place of Jefferson Farfan, had a left-footed shot on goal from around 12 yards out in thr 29th minute but France keeper Hugo Lloris was alert.

However, the pace and quick passing of France meant they they could turn it on at any moment. And they did with lethal impact, five minutes later. Following a through ball from Pogba, Giroud’s left-footed drive from the left side of the box deflected past defender Christian Ramos, beating Gallese, who moved towards the right post. Mbappe raced to tap it in to give France a crucial lead.

After the break, Peru made their intention clear by substituting midfielder Yoshimar Yotun with forward Farfan, while full-back Alberto Rodrigues was replaced by central defender Anderson Santamaria in order to provide more pace and width.

Peru almost got their equaliser when a 30-yard piledriver from Pedro Aquino flew inches away from the left post.

Peru employed further pressure on the French team but the latter showed its resolve and composure, especially in its own box.

Long-range drives from Andre Carrillo and Luis Advincula went over the cross-bar as a desperate Peru continue to hunt for their equaliser.

Another good movement from Peru saw Carrillo crossing from the right to left for Farfan, but his header could only hit the side-netting.

France managed to hold to their slim advantage as Peru lacked quality in finishing.

Girls can do anything, proves Indian teen who climbed Everest

June 22, 2018 by Nasheman

On May 15 this year, a teenaged girl from Haryana embarked on the very challenging task of climbing Mount Everest from the Nepal side. But having dropped her radio transceiver during the trek, she couldn’t inform anyone about her whereabouts.

With no one able to contact her, there was hushed speculation that 16-year-old Shivangi Pathak might have lost her life in one of the world’s toughest mountain terrains.

After a tense 10 hours, a great piece of news came down the mountain and, later, her family in Hisar got to know about her epic triumph — she had become the youngest Indian woman to scale the highest peak of the Himalayas.

“We were extremely worried about her safety. Our whole family kept praying for hours for her safety without eating or drinking,” Shivangi’s mother Aarti Pathak, 42, told IANS.

“It was after a really long ordeal that we got to know that not only was our girl safe, but that she had also scaled the summit. I cannot describe in words what it felt like to hear this news. We are so proud of her. She achieved what she was determined to,” the mother said.

Now a recognisable celebrity across India, the journey of this go-getter girl to this huge accomplishment began with a joke made by her mother.

“We got to hear of an Everest summiter (Mamta Sodha) being appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police. I jokingly told Shivangi to do something as big so she gets a similar job,” Aarti said.

Later, Shivangi saw some videos on Arunima Sinha, the first Indian amputee to climb the peak. Inspired by her, Shivangi, in November 2016, decided to climb the Everest.

She trained herself for just over a year to prepare for the challenge.

The trainer she approached initially criticised her for being “too stylish” with her hair. “She asked me if I have come to the ground or for a fashion walk. I was fat, and had long hair then,” Shivangi recalled. “It hurt. I thought that maybe I am dreaming too big.”

What seemed too big then eventually became a reality with her hard work and dedication. She got her hair cut short and toiled to get in shape. Weighing 65 kgs two years back when she decided to climb the summit, she now weighs only 48 kgs.

“I started shaping myself according to the requirements of the sport. I got my hair cut very short, started training under the same trainer, Rinku Pannu. She is my guru. She encouraged me to do it. I am immensely grateful to her,” said Shivangi.

“It is pretty funny that because I had short hair, girls who came to the ground started hitting on me thinking of me to be a boy,” she laughed.

The training session went on for six to seven hours every day. Shivangi didn’t attend school and dedicated all her time preparing to climb the Everest.

One training session included a 10-km run, weight lifting, rope -skipping. She was made to run with a backpack of 20 kgs on her shoulders.

“At times, she would tie ankle weights and run. When tired, she put them on her wrist,” said her 27-year-old trainer.

One day during her training, she suddenly woke up from her sleep around 11.30 pm as she was yet to jump rope 200 times.

“I had promised my trainer that day that I would do it 5,000 times but I couldn’t complete. So, I woke up in between to do it before midnight,” said the summiter.

Pannu exclaimed, “Look at her dedication!”

On April 1, she landed in Nepal from where she trekked up to the base camp where she reached by April 5. This was followed by over two weeks of acclimatisation.

Finally, on May 10, she began her “Everest Mission”, as she called it.

“The route was full of stones and pebbles, and it was very slippery. There were many struggles. A storm hit the range a day before I reached the summit,” Shivangi said, adding that she had to constantly motivate herself to overcome all hurdles.

“Ice on the way was very hard. It wouldn’t break. Stepping on it would make us slip. There was also a day when I fell sick due to the weather conditions, but I refused to give up,” she said.

She was accompanied by a Nepalese guide, Ang Temba Sherpa, who was with her throughout the journey.

“My guide was like god for me in that journey — he treated me like a younger sister, didn’t let me miss my family. He was with me through all ups and downs,” she explained.

On May 15, at 8.21 am, she made it. “The first person on my mind was my mother. I desperately wanted to embrace her at that moment. I was so happy I made her proud.”

Hoisting the national flag at the highest peak of the Himalayas was “a great feeling” for her. “It was a moment of pride for me. This achievement turned out to be an inspiration for many girls in Haryana and in the country,” she said.

“I feel girls can do anything. They can go anywhere. They just have to make up their mind and have faith and determination towards what they want,” she added.

She urged girls’ parents to “encourage and support” them in their goals and never let them feel they are less than the boys.

“My parents were the biggest support and that is why I know how important it is for a girl to have her parents standing by her in her decisions,” she added.

Her next target is to climb to the highest summits of the rest of the continents before she turns 18.

“Seven summits before 18,” she said.

Pannu (her coach) said that this was going to be a cakewalk for her.

“She has climbed the highest in the world, reaching the highest of the other six continents won’t be tough.”

“She is a girl of ambition. She made so many sacrifices. She never complained even when she was made to slog, gave up on all her food delights, lost weight, made herself physically fit. I have confidence in her. She can do it, she will,” Pannu said.

Wearing salwar-suits, Indian mother takes to international WWE ring

June 22, 2018 by Nasheman

WWE fights may be flashy, hard and violent at times but the first Indian woman to get into that ring at the international level has beaten bigger odds at home to reach there.

Kavita Devi, who is better known in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) international circles as “Hard KD”, is currently training and wrestling in Orlando, Florida, in the United States as part of her three-year contract with the WWE.

Kavita, the first Indian woman to reach the international level in WWE, is no ordinary sportswoman.

Even while being a professional WWE wrestler, Kavita is making sure that she dresses traditionally, the Indian way. When she fights in the ring, she is always dressed in a salwar-kameez, a popular dress for Indian women.

“I am proud that I enter the ring wearing a salwar suit. It is part of our Indian culture. I am the only one at the international level (in WWE) to be doing so. Many girls in India avoid getting into WWE wrestling seeing the clothes that most women in this sport wear inside the ring. I have broken that image and more girls in my country are getting inspired,” Kavita told IANS in an interview, pointing out that wearing the salwar-suit was no impediment in her performance in the ring.

Being married in a conventional family in 2009 and mother of a six-year-old son, Kavita has tackled several odds, including coming from a humble farming background, growing up among five siblings and facing difficult times economically.

Hailing from Malvi village in Haryana’s Jind district, this determined Haryanvi Jat girl is out to prove her mettle in WWE circles.

She is full of praise for her mentors — “The Great Khali” (Dalip Singh Rana) and Jinder Mahal, both former WWE champions.

“Khali sir got me to the (WWE) ring. He has a big contribution in shaping my career. Jinder Mahal is a big star in WWE. He has earned a big name for India at the international level,” said Kavita, who has trained in Khali’s wrestling academy in Jalandhar.

Kavita, 34, who had been wrestling for over 15 years before switching to WWE (in 2016), won a gold medal at the 2016 South Asian Games for India.

Weighing 75-kgs and standing 5-feet 9-inches tall, Kavita has been part of the Continental Wrestling Entertainment (CWE) and participated in the Mae Young Classic WWE championship event in Florida in June 2017 — the first Indian woman in this professional circuit.

Even though she is fully focused on her training at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando and her upcoming fights, Kavita misses her son whom she had to leave behind in India.

“I had never thought of entering WWE. I was only interested in wrestling. But I wanted to do something different. This is a very good field that I have found. Here, I can do a lot for our country. I have reached this level after going through very hard times and tough training and testing,” Kavita said.

Asked if the WWE is a real fight or just an entertainment show, Kavita said: “WWE has the word entertainment in it but let me tell you that the fight is real. The athletes make big jumps, hit each other and get hurt. All of this is real.”

Confident about where she has reached and what she is doing, Kavita is modest when she says: “I feel proud that I am able to motivate girls to get into this field where Indian women have not ventured at all. It is heartening to see that girls are getting inspired by me.”

Brazil take on Costa Rica in must win World Cup clash

June 22, 2018 by Nasheman

ROSTOV-ON-DON, June 17, 2018 (Xinhua) — Neymar of Brazil reacts during a group E match between Brazil and Switzerland at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, June 17, 2018. (Xinhua/Lu Jinbo/IANS)

Neymar and Brazil will need to step up their game when they take on Costa Rica in a must-win Group E FIFA World Cup clash here on Friday.

Brazil drew 1-1 with Switzerland in their opener last weekend, and Neymar was much criticised for his underwhelming performance.

He was hunted down mercilessly by the Swiss, drawing 10 of Brazil’s 19 fouls, as many as some entire teams.

Neymar also lacked the zip which made him the world’s most expensive footballer when French heavyweights Paris St Germain signed him from Spanish giants FC Barcelona last August.

There was an injury scare after he limped out of Tuesday’s training session with a sore ankle but to his team’s relief the forward is expected to be fit for what could be Brazil’s fourth World Cup match without a win.

Costa Rica, on their part, are desperate for points after they lost their opener to Serbia.

Quarter-finalists in the 2014 Brazil World Cup, Costa Rica have lost seven of their last nine matches and scored only five goals in the process.

“It is going to be a difficult game as are all games in the World Cup,” Brazil attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho was quoted as saying.

“They are a good team. We saw the game against Serbia, and it was only decided through a dead ball situation.”

“This is another opportunity for us. We need to do it, we are all focused. We are mentally strong to play a great game.”

Loan waiver, free power no lasting solution: Naidu

June 22, 2018 by Nasheman

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu said populist measures such as loan waivers and free power would not provide lasting solution to the distressed farmers in the country and sought timely credit at affordable interest rates besides giving latest know-how to them to improve farm productivity.

Inaugurating a two-day National Consultation on Making Agriculture Sustainable and Profitable in here, he said concerted, coordinated and focused action was required to double the farmers income in the coming years, according to an official statement.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, former Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and renowned agricultural acientist Prof. M.S. Swaminathan were present at the event.

Calling for making agriculture viable, profitable and sustainable to improve the lot of farmers and ensure home-grown food security, he stressed on the need to identify gaps in policy formulation to evolve a multipronged strategy to make agriculture viable, profitable and sustainable was the main purpose of this consultation, the statement said.

“Our policies should be more pro farmer and there should be a pronounced bias towards agriculture,” he said, emphasising that the 4 Is – Irrigation, Infrastructure, Investment and Insurance sectors – needed to be strengthened for an integrated development of farm sector.

“It is important to make agriculture sustainable through a judicious use of scarce resources like water, electricity and by avoiding indiscriminate use of fertilizers and pesticides,” he said.

Observing that populist programs like loan waivers and free power would not provide lasting solutions, the Vice President said that farmers must be provided timely credit at affordable interest rates.

“Farmers have to be given the latest know-how and trained in the do-how to improve farm productivity,” he added.

Naidu said that along with increased production, there was need to have efficient distribution of food grains.

“Only then can we move our country forward to achieve the goal of zero hunger and adequate nutrition for all,” he said.

Expressing his concern over the restrictions on export of agriculture produce, Naidu advocated to strike a balance between the interests of farmers and consumers.

Referring to the need to promote diversification of crops, he said that farmers should be encouraged to cultivate high value crops like fruits, vegetables, condiments, pulses, spices and sugarcane.

Naidu also said that it is important to encourage farmers to take up allied activities like poultry, dairy, fisheries and aquacultures to not only enhance farmers income but also to provide a cushion against the adverse impact of failed crops.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for doubling farmer’s income by 2022, the Vice President said although many initiatives were taken to boost agricultural growth, there is a need to examine if policy changes are required.

Europe ends Greece’s 8-year bailout saga

June 22, 2018 by Nasheman

The Finance Ministers of the Eurozone, the Eurogroup, has reached an agreement that will put an end to Greece’s third bailout program, the French Finance Minister said.

The agreement will end the eight-year debt-relief program for Greece, in which the country received 300 billion euros in three financial assistance programs as agreed in 2010, 2011 and 2015 in exchange for structural reforms and fiscal adjustments.

Bruno Le Maire told the media after the late Thursday night meeting that the Eurozone nations have reached an agreement on the bailout program for Greece.

He described it as a good deal that should allow the debt-ridden country to look to the future with confidence and accelerate its recovery, Efe news reported.

Eurozone President and Portuguese Finance Minister Mario Centeno said at a press conference shortly after the meeting “after eight long years Greece will finally be graduating from its financial assistance”.

He also confirmed that Athens will not need any additional bailouts.

The ministers finalized the last revision of the third bailout program after verifying that Athens has complied with the 88 requirements, and consequently approved a final disbursement of 15 billion euros.

This will provide Greece with a financial cushion of 24 billion euros, with which Athens could pay off its debts in the next 22 months without having to resort financing on the market to support itself.

With this last disbursement, Greece will have received a total of 61.9 billion euros of the 86 billion euros that were made available to it in the third bailout, agreed in 2015.

Taking into account the two agreements reached in 2010 and 2011, the total aid amounts to 288.7 billion.

However, the key part of the agreement are the relief measures that should allow the Greek debt, which is close to 180 per cent of GDP, to be sustainable and the markets to regain confidence in Athens’ ability to honour their commitments.

‘Government’s apathy behind Jharkhand hunger-deaths’

June 22, 2018 by Nasheman

Investigating the recent spate of hunger deaths in Jharkhand, a Right to Food Campaign report has blamed faulty Public Distribution System and “alarming level of food insecurity” in the state for keeping poor people in starvation and “forcing them to die”.

In the last 10 months, at least 12 persons have died of starvation in the state, the campaign has noted in its report, with three of these deaths occurring in June alone.

“The recent deaths of Savitri Devi in Giridh, Meena Musahar in Chhatra and Chintaman Malhar in Ramgarh expose the government’s lack of seriousness to address the issue of starvation in the state.

“Even after a spate of deaths before these three victims, the government took negligible cognizance of the alarming situation,” the cross-country collective of various bodies said in a statement issued on Thursday.

The cause of these deaths was a denial of food for either lack of ration card or not having the card linked with Aadhaar by the victims, the report noted.

“Contrary to the government’s claims, the immediate causes of the 12 recent starvation deaths include denial of subsidized rice due to the absence of a ration card, cancellation of ration card due to the absence of Aadhaar linkage or failure of Aadhaar-based biometric authentication.

“It is true that many of the starvation victims were also ill, but they would probably not have succumbed to hunger if they received adequate nutrition and medical care,” it said.

So that the poor don’t die starving, the campaign demanded for the “universalisation of the PDS in rural areas”.

It also criticised the coverage of the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) — a government scheme to provide food to the poorest of the poor, of which there are millions in the country.

The campaign revealed that despite falling in such category, the victims’ families were found not to possess any AAY ration cards.

“Denial of social security pensions and absence of work under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act further contributed to the destitution of the starvation victims and their families.

“At least four victims were eligible to social security pension, but were either not issued a pension either due to administrative lapses or Aadhaar-related issues.”

Day After Being Harassed, Lucknow Inter-faith Couple Receive Passports; Officer Transferred

June 21, 2018 by Nasheman

A day after an inter-faith couple tweeted to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj narrating the humiliation they had to face at the city passport office, accused officer Vikas Mishra was transferred. A probe was also ordered in this regard on Thursday.

Hours after the incident, secretary of external affairs ministry D M Mulay took cognizance of the matter and assured “appropriate action”, following which the couple was called to the passport office on Thursday and their passports were handed over to them.

The incident was first reported by on Wednesday when it came to light that the couple, who had applied for their passports in Lucknow, was allegedly humiliated and shamed by passport officer Vikas Mishra before he rejected their application.

Mohammad Anas Siddiqui, who married Tanvi Seth in 2007 in Lucknow and has a six-year-old daughter, applied for both of their passports on June 19 and took an appointment for June 20 at the Passport Office in Lucknow.

On the day of the appointment, the couple cleared the first two stages of the interview at counters A and B but the problem started at counter C where one has to interact with an official.

Siddiqui said, “My wife’s turn came before me and as soon as she reached counter C5, an officer named Vikas Mishra started to go through her documents. When he read the spouse’s name as Mohd Anas Siddiqui, he started shouting at her and said that she should not have married me. My wife broke into tears, after which Mr. Mishra said that she should get all the documents corrected with a changed name.”

Sethi later tweeted to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and the Prime Minister’s Office and sought their intervention, following which the action was taken.

In her tweet to Swaraj, Sethi wrote, “Hello Ma’am, I type this tweet with immense faith in justice and in you and ironically with a lot of anger/hurt and agony in my heart because of the way I was treated at the Lucknow passport office at Ratan Square by Mr. Vikas Mishra the reason because I married a Muslim and not changed my name ever. He spoke to me very rudely and was loud enough for others to hear while discussing my case. I have never felt so harassed ever before. The other workers at the office acknowledged his rude demeanor (sic).”

In another tweet, Tanvi Seth added: “Sushma Swaraj Ma’am I have never imagined that in a place like a passport office we would have a people who are moral policing the citizens. He didn’t just put my passport on hold he even put my husband’s passport on hold. This is a clear grudge. I was shocked at this behavior. I have never felt so insulted in the last 12 years of my marriage with my husband. It is my personal choice to choose a name I want to after my marriage. This is our family matter and the last thing I expected to hear at the passport office was it is your duty to change your name after marriage. The person who spoke to my husband later said of your wife’s case would have been coming to me there wouldn’t have been issues because her papers are complete (sic).”
