Cabinet expansion after 2019 : Congress High Command

June 22, 2018 by Nasheman

The JD(S)-Congress state cabinet will not be expanded anytime in the near future, sources have said. However, the nomination of presidents for state corporation boards is going to take place soon.

At present, six ministerial positions are vacant under the Congress quota. More than a dozen senior MLAs are lobbying to get included in the ministry. They are also showing their might through their supporters. However, Congress high command has warned that it will not budge to pressures of this nature by its party MLAs. It is also learned that the Congress high command has taken a decision not to expand the cabinet in the next six months.

In the midst of these developments, it has been decided to complete the first phase of a nomination of presidents for the state corporations and boards. As per the decision that was taken in the meeting of the coordination committee, Congress will get 20 of the 30 vacant positions of boards and corporations, while the JD(S) will get 10.

Generally, party workers are given preference in the recruitment of state corporation boards. However, this time around it is likely that these will be given to MLAs, in order to keep them under control as most of them are unhappy with not being included in the ministry. However, Congress is facing stiff opposition for this move by the lower level leaders and workers of the party. It is learned that the high command of Congress is not paying any heed to this pressure and has decided to pacify the frustrated MLAs by offering them the top positions in the state corporations and boards.

KC Venugopal, general secretary of AICC in charge of Karnataka, will visit the city by the end of this week. He will finalize the names of the MLAs for the positions of presidentship of various state corporations after holding a discussion with Dr. G Parameshwar, deputy chief minister and the eminent leaders of the Congress party. It is learned that Rahul Gandhi, president of AICC has already given the go-ahead in this connection.

The state cabinet will continue to function without hiccups as the unhappy MLAs, who raised the voice of dissent, are pacified due to the offer of the president positions in various state corporation boards. If the state cabinet is expanded now, the dissident MLAs may assume that the high command bowed to their pressure. In addition, this might lead to further rebellion in the party. If the MLAs, who are deprived of any authority, begin to raise their voice again, it might shake the very foundation of the coalition government. So the Congress high command has taken a decision to avert any impending situation, and taken the firm decision of not getting the cabinet expanded at all for the time being.

For the same reason, the valuation of the style of functioning of the present ministers will be undertaken after completion of six months of their tenure. The present ministers including DCM Dr. Parameshwar will be holding the positions for only two years. The cabinet is going to be then reshuffled for the next three years. Moreover, till the next Lok Sabha elections, the coalition government wants to stay put at any cost. It is being said that Congress high command will expand the state cabinet only after taking into account the results of the Lok Sabha elections and the developments that might take place after the results.

June 22, 2018 by Nasheman

India to begin their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on June 23

June 22, 2018 by Nasheman

Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy Breda 2018 at Breda, Netherlands

The Indian Team will begin their campaign at the Rabobank Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy Breda 2018 against arch-rivals Pakistan on Saturday (June 23).

The 2018 Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy will be the 37th and last edition of the Hockey Champions Trophy for men. It will be held from 23 June to 1 July 2018 in Breda, Netherlands.

After the 18-member national squad for Indian Men’s Hockey Team was announced recently, the Indian team under Chief Coach Harendra Singh has upped the ante knowing well that the Rabobank Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy Breda 2018, with world’s top teams including Olympic Champions Argentina, defending World Champions Australia, World No.3 Belgium, hosts Netherlands and Pakistan in fray for the title, offers the right platform to test themselves ahead of the prestigious Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018.

“The team has moved on from the poor performance at the Gold Coast 2018 XXI Commonwealth Games. At the camp at the Sports Authority of India, Bengaluru Campus, one of the main focus was on team’s on-field communication and re-instilling the team’s belief that we have it in us to Go for Gold. Our psychology sessions have been critical in making us believe in the team goal and Chief Coach has prepared a 20-point agenda which we read every day ahead of training sessions to remind ourselves of our aim ahead of the tournament,” expressed Indian Team’s Vice-Captain Chinglensana Singh Kangujam.

The Indian team’s inefficiency in converting field goals despite improved circle penetrations have been a concern. Goalkeeper and Captain PR Sreejesh stated that the team has paid special attention in this area over the past two weeks in the National Camp.

“We have paid a lot of attention to the positioning of forwards in the striking circle. Chief Coach has not just drawn out the position chart for the strikers and explained in theory, but has also walked them through the positioning to ensure they don’t repeat the mistakes made at 2018 CWG because of which we missed out on scoring critical goals. Front-line defence is also one of the key areas we have paid extra attention to,” Sreejesh stated.

Sreejesh believes that the team has the calibre to finish on the top at the Rabobank Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy Breda 2018.

“We have a good team balance with experience and youth. Our preparations have been earnest and the team certainly has the calibre to finish on top provided we play our A-game and not make silly mistakes and lose out on scoring opportunities. This is the best chance to see where we stand against top teams in the world before the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018 in November-December and we need to make this opportunity count,” the Captain concluded.

Girl arrested in Bengal for stabbing ex-lover’s girlfriend

June 22, 2018 by Nasheman

A girl was arrested on Thursday for repeatedly stabbing the girlfriend of her ex-lover with a sickle in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, police said.

“Ankita Mondal, a resident of North 24 Parganas’s Ashoknagar, has been arrested for allegedly attacking a teenage girl from Habra area on Wednesday night. The girl sustained multiple injuries in the head and arms,” an officer from Habra Police Station said.

According to locals, the victim, a class 12 student, is currently in a relationship with Mondal’s ex-boyfriend.

“Mondal was in a relationship with a youth from Habra. He started dating this girl after he and Mondal allegedly broke up a year ago,” a neighbour of the victim said.

The victim, however, did not have a clue about the impending attack as she was oblivious of Mondal’s affair with her lover.

“She came to meet me on Wednesday. After talking to me for some time, she asked me to show her the way to the washroom but as soon as I took her there, she took out a sickle and stabbed me on the head five-six times. My arms also got injured while trying to save myself,” said the victim, who was rushed to a local hospital after the incident.

Police, however, refused to comment on the relationship between the trio and said further investigation is necessary before drawing a conclusion.

BSF, Pakistan Rangers hold flag meeting on IB

June 22, 2018 by Nasheman

A flag meeting was held on Thursday between officers of the Border Security Force (BSF) and Pakistan Rangers on the International Border (IB) in Jammu district.

The BSF officials said the flag meeting was held on the request of Pakistan Rangers.

“Today at about 10.35 a.m., a Sector Commander-level flag meeting was held between the BSF and Pakistan Rangers at zero line on Octroi border outpost in Suchetgarh sector,” the officials said.

“Pakistan Rangers denied all the allegations and said that no snipping was done from their side,” the officials said.

Both sides agreed to work together for maintaining peace and harmony along the IB and intimate each other before carrying out any construction work along the border.

The BSF also told Pakistan Rangers that no movement of armed persons along the IB should be noticed during late hours.

BJP government insulted farmers: Congress on Mandsaur firing report

June 22, 2018 by Nasheman

Condemning the S.K. Jain report on the firing on farmers in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur last year, Congress on Thursday said it has termed the killed farmers as “anti-social elements”.

Congress leader Pramod Tiwari said that the government is “not only cheating the farmers but also humiliating and insulting them”.

The Jain inquiry committee was set up by Shivraj Singh Chouhan government to probe the Mandsaur firing incident.

Tiwari said the report justified the firing against the farmers, and gave a clean chit to the police and the paramilitary forces.

“… Nobody is guilty of firing, the police, collector, or the CRPF and terms the farmers who were killed as anti-social elements.

“We condemn this report. The government should have expressed solidarity with their families. How can you call them anti-socials,” he said.

“They have insulted all the farmers of the country. It is a murder and it exposes Prime Minister (Narendra Modi), who calls the farmers ‘annadata’ (provider of food).”

Mocking Modi over his claim of doubling farm incomes by 2022, Tiwari said: “PM said farmers’ income would be doubled. The increase in the prices of diesel has led to the increse in prices of components like seeds, compost. But farmers are not getting anything.

“The PMO is spreading propaganda about farmers regularly. As being publicised, the farmers are not getting 50 per cent more than the actual cost of production.”

He said that the Finance Ministry had promised to provide Minimum Support Price to farmers, but without adding C2 (Comprehensive Cost), while the crop insurance scheme benefits insurance companies and not farmers.

Race 3

Race 3 Is A Pure Entertainer For Gen X & Kids

Banner: Salman Khan Films & Tips Films

Producers: Salman Khan & Ramesh Taurani

Director: Remo D’Souza

Star Cast: Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Bobby Deol, Saaqib Saleem, Freddy Daruwala, Jacqueline Fernandez, Daisy Shah, Sharat Saxsena, Rajesh Sharma et al

Music: Salim – Sulaiman

Director Remo D’Souza dancer turned choreographer turned actor turned director’s 1st ever 2 outings were F.A.L.T.U. & ABCD – Any Body Can Dance. In his 3rd outing Race 3 courtesy Salman Khan, who also happens to be a producer & a distributor along with Ramesh Taurani of Tips Films, Remo D’Souza has definitely shown more sparks to ignite his directorial prowess even further. Albeit he got a chance to direct Race 3 after replacing the original director duo Abbas-Mastan of Race 1 & Race 2 franchise which had performed much better at the Box-Office turnstiles, but of course Race 3 succeeded in doing 100 crores business duo to weekend holiday signifying the end of the Holy month of Ramzan followed by Eid-ul-Fitr. Yours truly met a lot of kids who enjoyed the movie in a suburban multiplex and one kid named Amber really liked Race 3’s car dashing action sequences, performance of Salman uncle’s acting and the style & grandeur of Race 3 albeit not necessary in that particular order.

That apart when Race 1 had arrived in cinemas in the year 2008, everyone had expected it to be a decent suspense fare. But the film exceeded everyone’s expectations thanks to its stylish narrative, excellent performances, writing & most importantly, the numerous unpredictable twists & turns. While Race 2 which had arrived in the year 2013 didn’t reach the level of its predecessor, forget going beyond it.

Yet, the franchise of “Race” had a lot of steam left. The producers obviously realized it and they have now come up with Race 3. This time, the film is bigger in terms of scale & grandeur and moreover, it also features one of the country’s biggest superstars, Salman Khan. At the same time, the thrill element has been toned down a bit to make it more family-friendly.

But the lead hero of Race 1 & Race 2 namely Saif Ali Khan, is no longer a part of the “Race there”.

Race 3 is the story of a dysfunctional family amidst a high stakes heist. Shamsher (Anil Kapoor) is the head of this family & Sikander (Salman Khan) is the kind-hearted & wise member. Sanjana (Daisy Shah) & Suraj (Saquib Saleem) are the youngest in the family and have a grudge against Sikander. But Shamsher is the pacifier who always ensures that things don’t go out of control. However, trouble arises when this family is entrusted with a task of retrieving a hard disk kept in a locker. This hard disk is worth millions. Shamsher entrusts this task to Sikander and the other family members. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

The biggest problem with Race 3 is that there’s hardly any storyline in the film. Whatever of Shiraz Ahmed’s story is there is too lame & too confusing and it rests on a wafer thin plot. Shiraz Ahmed & Kiran Kotrial’s dialogues are corny and one soon realizes that Daisy Shah’s “none of your business” dialogue is not the only troll-worthy one-liner of the film! Shiraz Ahmed’s screenplay is disjointed as it concentrates more on style & action than substance. Also, just like its predecessors, the makers have added a lot of twists & turns but they are unnecessary & unconvincing.

Remo Dsouza’s direction also suffers as a result of the flawed writing. The film is high on style & low on substance. The action bits are good but Remo has stretched these scenes unnecessarily. Moreover, he, the makers & the writers have tried every gimmick in the book to appeal to Salman fans. Even dialogues & scenes are something that is tailor made for the “Bhai” fans.

The 1st half of Race 3 is ok. Yet it’s only in the 2nd half that the film boasts of some worthwhile moments. There’s no doubt that the film looks rich. Each & every frame is a visual delight and it shows that the money has been spent like water. The makers have even left scope for a sequel. At 2.40 hours, the film appears too long. Some of the scenes are so corny that it would surely become the talking point of social media in the days to come.

The songs of Race 3 are good. However, “Allah Duhai Hai” & “Selfish” are quite memorable and are picturised brilliantly. “Heeriye” leaves a bit of a mark. Salim-Sulaiman’s background score is much better and it adds to the thrill & the dramatic element.

While Ayananka Bose’s cinematography is eye catching and captures the locales of UAE & Thailand very well. Rajnish Hedao’s production design is classy while Anal Arasu & Thomas Struthers’s action lifts the film to an extent. But again, it’s not as spectacular as Salman Bhai’s previous films like Tiger Zinda Hai & Kick which had arrived in the year 2014. Steven Bernard’s editing is haphazard and the film could have been smoother & shorter in length. Manish Malhotra, Ashley Rebello, Alvira Khan Agnihotri, Anaita Adajania, Akshay Tyagi & Rhea Kapoor’s costumes are quite good and suit the financial status of the characters.

Talking of performances, Salman Khan does well and is in a way the saving grace of the film. He’s not in his top form like he was in his last film Tiger Zinda Hai in the year 2017. But he sails through the film with his performance. Jacqueline Fernandez is shockingly disappointing and she struggles to act. Bobby Deol as Yash is also strictly okay. There was an excitement to see him after a hiatus and he’s sure to disappoint his fans & admirers. Anil Kapoor however puts his best foot forward and is impressive. His look is also quite great. On the other hand Daisy Shah & Saqib Saleem has given a decent performance, and the same goes for Freddy Daruwala as Rana.

Tail Piece: On the whole, Race 3 is high on style & low on substance.

At the Box-Office turnstiles, the movie will take a jump start due to Salman Khan’s star power & accelerate over the weekend.

Dalit women’s collective calls for end of caste-based violence

June 22, 2018 by Nasheman

A Dalit women’s collective, leading their side event for the first time at a session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva on Thursday, voiced their concern over increasing violence and atrocities against women and called for “structural upheaval” to combat the situation, a statement said.

A report “Voices against Caste Impunity: Narratives of Dalit women in India”, charting caste-based violence and the struggles that survivors are made to face for justice, was also released at the UNHRC’s 38th session.

“Dalit women are facing various kinds of extremely brutal violence and a culture of collusion between different authorities to protect perpetrators of crimes against Dalit women,” it said.

It also mentioned that the SC/ST commissions and the National Commission for Women (NCW) may not be able to fully grasp and address gendered caste issues.

A panel constituting UN member on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination committee Rita Isazk-Ndiaye, UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women Dubravka Aimonovi, Supreme Court advocate Vrinda Grover and the All India Dalit Mahila Adhikar Manch General Secretary Asha Kotwal were present at the event.

According to the speakers, violence against Dalit women is linked with economic deprivation, political disenfranchisement, barriers to justice and social indignities.

“Dalit woman narrative is not victimhood, we want to make it known to the world that our fight is against those who spread venom and bias which obstruct our right to life,” said Kotwal.

The panellists also pitched for strong support by a global solidarity movement and seek stronger actions from within the UN and campaigns from international human rights organisations.

“Many Dalit victims and their families in India are not informed of their rights and atrocities committed against them are crimes. Institutionalised impunity for crimes committed against Dalit women in India must be addressed. The police’s reluctance and deliberate omissions to register complaints and arrest perpetrators must be questioned,” Grover said.
