SC seeks Centre’s stand on plea to ban hoisting green flags

July 16, 2018 by Nasheman

The Supreme Court on Monday sought the Centre’s stand on a plea by a cleric seeking a ban on hoisting green flags with a crescent and star, terming it as un-Islamic and resembling that of a Pakistani political party.

A bench of Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Ashim Bhushan asked Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, to seek instructions from the government on the issue and posted it for hearing after two weeks.

“Take instructions on what’s the stand of the government. Sometime it would be difficult for the government… They would be blamed they are taking action mala fide. Now the matter is with the court, they can take instructions,” the bench said.

The court was hearing a plea filed by the Syed Waseem Rizvi, the chairman of Uttar Pradesh Shia Central Board of Waqfs, alleging that the flags hoisted resembled the flags of the Pakistan Muslim League, which belongs to the “enemy country”.

Senior advocate S.P. Singh, appearing for Rizvi, told the court that during petitioner’s visit to Mumbai, Hyderabad, Karnataka and other places in the country, he saw flags on several buildings and religious structures, which were allegedly a cause of tension between Hindu and Muslim communities.

Such flags were being hoisted in Muslim-dominated areas with utmost impunity and the crescent and star in a green backdrop have never been part of any Islamic practice and does not have any role or significance in Islam, claimed the plea.

The petition stated that the crescent star flags in green colour owe its origins to the erstwhile political party, Muslim League, founded by Nawaz Waqar Ul-Malik and Mohammad Ali Jinnah in 1906. But in the present day, it was being used by Indian Muslims who were treating it as an Islamic flag.

Congress first list announced Muslim representation down from 2013 : Karnataka Assembly 2018

April 16, 2018 by Nasheman

Out of the 218 names announced by the Congress in its first list of candidates, only 15 Muslims have been given tickets. Several Muslim leaders are upset with the list and say that more representation ought to have been given.

The Muslims form a large chunk of the population in Karnataka and their votes are crucial for the prospects of the Congress. Raising this issue, former MP Rehman Khan said that they were promised more tickets.

He said that he was unhappy with the representation given to the Muslims. In 2013, 19 Muslim candidates were fielded, but this year it has come down to 15, he said. He said that he would meet with Rahul Gandhi and take up the issue.

Rehman Khan also questioned why his son was denied a ticket. His son, Mansoor Ali was an aspirant but does not feature in the list of 218 released by the Congress on Sunday. He wanted to know why his son was not given a ticket from Jayanagar despite the constituency having a high number of Muslims. The ticket here was given to Sowmya Reddy, daughter of Karnataka minister, Ramalinga Reddy. The Congress is yet to announce the names of six more candidates on Monday. The name of N A Haris was not announced from the Shanthinagar constituency. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah hinted that he is likely to get a ticket from this constituency.

Bengal violence: Hindus, Muslims join forces to maintain peace in Asansol’s neighbouring town

March 31, 2018 by Nasheman

Bengal saw massive communal clashes spin out of control in the Asansol-Raniganj area earlier this week after a Ram Navami procession went south. Even though police has been able to bring the situation under control in the last few days, tension remains steep in the area.

A different picture, however, was seen in Asansol-neighbouring Chinakuri area recently, where people of the two communities have come together to ensure the safety of one another.

Hindus and Muslims in Chinakuri were seen spending sleepless nights guarding the mosques and temples in their own area to maintain peace.

Locals here, armed with torches through the night, have stepped up to protect their neighbourhood on their own to make sure miscreants don’t harm the mosques and temple here or trigger violence.

Nonetheless, police-patrolling is still on the Asansol-Raniganj area, with prohibitory orders in place and internet services still suspended to prevent any fresh violence.

“Who will provide for the wife and families of the man, who will be imprisoned in his absence?” asked Dr. Shaikh.

Finally, Hadiya speaks to husband Shafin Jahan over phone

November 30, 2017 by Nasheman

Salem: The long pending desire of Hadiya was fulfilled Wednesday when she spoke to her husband Shafin Jahan over a mobile phone.

A day after she arrived in the city to continue studies at the Sivaraj Homeopathy medical college here as directed by the Supreme Court, she spoke to her husband using the phone of the College Dean.

“Hadiya talked to Jahan (her husband) for a while from my mobile phone, after I, as local guardian, asked her whether she was interested in talking or meeting anybody, college dean G Kannan told reporters.

The 25-year-old was brought to the institution amid tight security by Kerala police from Coimbatore, about 170 km from here Tuesday evening.

Earlier when reporters asked about her husband Shafin Jahan, Hadiya said she had no contact with him for the last few months as she did not have a mobile phone and the only people she spoke to were her parents.

“I am very eager to speak to my husband,” said Hadiya, who was in the news recently after her conversion to Islam and marriage with the Muslim youth in Kerala.

The dean said: “She appeared to be relieved from depression after talking to him (husband). There is no restriction imposed on her to talk or to meet anybody.”

Hadiya also expressed regret for the tense situation prevailing in the college and inconvenience to students due to her, Kannan said.

Stating that she has not given any application to change her name, he said she has applied on her earlier name (Hindu name-Akhila Ashokan) for internship.

However, there was some confusion about where and with whom to send her during the college holidays, Kannan said adding the management will approach the apex court in this regard.

All rules and regulations and restrictions of the college will apply to her also and weekly once she will be allowed to go out for buying what she requires, along with the hostel wardens, he said.

Meanwhile, the college administrator Kalpana Shivaraj said the management will extend all support to Hadiya to complete her course. Hadiya’s request letter has been sent to to Dr MGR University for approval, she said.

Police said one Sub-inspector, four constables–two women and two men–will be part of her security.

“For the past six months, I was talking to persons I did not like (parents) because of their harassment during my stay with them,” Hadiya told reporters earlier at the college, where she will be undergoing a 11-month internship.

The apex court, after the proceedings, had freed Hadiya from her parents’ custody and asked her to pursue her studies.

She further said she will be able to communicate better with the media persons after receiving the copy of the Supreme Court order.

The court has appointed the Dean of the college as Hadiya’s guardian and granted him liberty to approach it in case of any problem. She was earlier staying at her parental home in Kochi for several weeks. The court, however, did not accede to her plea to be allowed to go with her husband.

Jahan had on September 20 approached the apex court seeking recall of its order directing the NIA to investigate the controversial case of conversion and marriage of Hadiya.

The Kerala High Court had annulled the marriage, terming it as an instance of ‘love jihad’, following which Jahan approached the Supreme court.
