Movie Review: ‘Manjhi – The Mountain Man’ is mainly for art house cinema lover

September 1, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Manjhi-the-Mountain

Banner: Viacom 18 Motion Pictures & NFDC India
Producers: Nina Lath Gupta & Deepa Sahi
Director: Ketan Mehta
Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Radhika Apte, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Gaurav Dwivedi et al

Director Ketan Mehta’s last colourful outing was the Randeep Hooda starrer ‘Rang Rasiya’ which had fetched critical acclaim galore. He is more Known for delivering gems & milestone movies in his career. Ketan has now come up with an out of the world movie like ‘Manjhi – The Mountain Man’, an Indian biographical film, based on the life of Dashrath Manjhi, who was widely known as the “Mountain Man”.

The plotted scenario starts off with a ‘conversation’ between Dashrath Maanjhi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and a humongous mountain, in which he cries his heart out before the mountain with all the aggression. The ‘heat’ of his conversation is so much that it (quite literally) sparks off a fire. The story then gets into a flashback mode wherein it shows all the events that lead him to the present day situation. The flashback shows Dashrath, who hails from a totally backward class, getting married to Phaguniya (Radhika Apte) during childhood itself. Because of his father’s inability to pay the debts, he plans to leave Dashrath with the village’s merciless Mukhiya (Tigmanshu Dhulia) as his domestic help. But the self respecting Dashrath bites off his father’s hand and runs away from the village itself…….only to return after a gap of 7 long years. While he sees that things haven’t changed much in the village in terms of progress, his love life blooms the very moment he sets his eyes on Phaguniya. His joy knows no end when he discovers that Phaguniya is no one else but the same girl whom he had got married to in his childhood. After all the drama that takes place because of his unemployment, Dashrath & Phaguniya run away from the ‘clutches’ of their parents, only to live a peaceful life forever. Dashrath loves her so much that his life becomes impossible without her. After the delivery of their 1st child, Phaguniya conceives for the 2nd time. The dutiful wife that she is, she climbs the hilly mountains to bring lunch for Dashrath, who works incessantly in order to give his family a happy life. One day, pregnant Phaguniya, while climbing the hills, slips from there and passes away after delivering her 2nd child. Unable to bear the grief of the sudden death of her wife, Dashrath feels that the hilly ‘egoistic’ mountains are the killers. In order to teach these mountains a lesson that they will never forget, he starts cutting them with an axe…….all single handedly.

Producers Viacom 18 Picture & NFDC deserves kudos & full marks for backing Ketan Mehta’s courageous act of coming up with such realistic docu drama as ‘Manjhi – The Mountain Man’.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui & Radhika Apte have delivered a very heart warming & flawless performance. The rest of the film’s characters in the form of Tigmanshu Dhulia, Pankaj Tripathi, Gaurav Dwiwedi et al, offer their support in taking the film to its well deserving climax. A special mention must be made of Deepa Sahi, in a cameo, who is perfection personified.

Tail Piece: ‘Manjhi – The Mountain Main’ is a once in a lifetime made par excellent film albeit which will appeal mainly to art house cinema lovers.

Movie Review: ‘All is Well’ is an entertaining film both for the classy as well as mass audiences

August 31, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

all-is-well

Banner: Allchemy Productions & T – Series
Producers: Shyam Bajaj, Varun Bajaj, Bhushan Kumar & Krishan Kumar
Director: Umesh Shukla
Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Asin, Rishi Kapoor & Supriya Pathak
Music: Meet Bros Anjjan, Amaal Mallik, Mithoon & Himesh Reshammiya

Director Umesh Shukla in his debut directorial offering ‘OMG – Oh My God!’ had displayed a fair sense of his directorial finesse. And in his 2nd directorial outing ‘All is Well’ he has surpassed his own directorial skills by giving a gift of a beautifully entertaining film.

The plotted scenario of ‘All is Well’ depicts Indar (Abhishek Bachchan) is a musician based in Bangkok. Nimmi (Asin), a true blue romantic at heart (in the literal sense) loves Indar but the angry young man can’t reciprocate her feelings as he belongs to a dysfunctional family where his father Bhallasahab (Rishi Kapoor) & mom (Supriya Pathak) were always at loggerheads. As he didn’t want to be a part of his father’s fledgling bakery business, Indar had been asked to leave the house. Quirky fate proves instrumental in bringing Indar back to his home town Kasol where his dad was under enormous debt while his mom was unwell. The local moneylender Cheema (Zeeshan Ayyub) makes Bhalla & Son run for their money and madness unleashes relentlessly.

All in all, ‘All is Well’ proves Umesh Shukla’s mastery over his directorial treatment. Not only the cast, but also the entire technical crew of ‘All is Well’, especially music composer Amaal Mallik, deserves a pat on their back for living up to not only Umesh Shukla but also the cine goers expectations.

Performance wise Abhishek Bachchan has delivered a marvellous performance. Rishi Kapoor is brilliance personified. Zeeshan Ayyub’s act is the most entertaining. Asin looks glamorous. Supriya Pathak is competent. While Seema Pahwa is hilarious.

Tail Piece: ‘All is Well’ is one fun filled family entertainment which is not to be missed at any cost.

Nasheman.in interviews music composer & singer Abhishek Ray

August 27, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Abhishek Ray handles mainstream commercial & intellectual cinema with equal ease.

Abhishek Ray3

How did you manage to capture the spirit of ‘Welcome Back’?

Composing the theme song for ‘Welcome Back’ was a huge challenge as the film is a pot pourri of various powerful characters coming together to create a comical extravaganza of epic proportions. So the song had to capture the soul of the tapori (John Abraham), the dangerous (Nana Patekar & Anil Kapoor), the glamorous (Shruti Hasan), the fabulous (Ankita & Dimple Kapadia), the ferocious (Naseeruddin Shah) etc. So I came up with this unusual funk – jazz kind of melody which captures the quirky comedy of the film as well as the mafia element.

Besides composing music, you have sung the song too?

The title song needed a unique & fresh vocal timbre. It also needed a brazen, experimental jazz – blues kind of singing. Owing to my background in the jazz piano & western classical, this kind of singing comes naturally and everybody loved it. I wanted to avoid the cliche of overused playback voices. Sometimes they take away from the uniqueness of the song.

Abhishek Ray

Must have been a radical shift for you as a music composer from ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ to ‘Welcome Back’?

Unfortunately we live in times of mediocrity where one musician does only one repetitive kind of style and Bollywood is quick to recognize that and slot him. But the true quality of a film composer lies in versatility. He should have the knowledge & talent bank to capture the essence of the film and deliver a sound canvas accordingly. After composing & singing for national award winning films like ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ & ‘I Am Kalam’ and critically acclaimed films like ‘Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster’, ‘Yeh Saali Zindagi’, I felt the inner need to drift away and exhibit the mainstream commercial side of my melodies.

Abhishek Ray1

And how did you make this transition?

The trick I think is to hold on and have the power to say no. I had many film offers after ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ but did not pick up most of them. I waited patiently till Anees Bhai heard me and was gracious & kind to pick me up for such a gigantic production. There are very few directors in the industry who deviate from the obvious and show the courage & insight to introduce a radical sound in an extravagant mainstream production with 9 stars.

Abhishek Ray2

So do you think star power works for music?

For film music, invariably yes…Many people may be evasive on this but experience has taught me to be candid. Apart from composing good music, it is important to release that music on a robust platform. How well the director uses your music and what visuals carry it forward makes a world of difference. A lot of beautiful songs don’t reach out to the target audience due to lack of promotions and visibility. I have faced that far too often.

What about non – film music?

I was brought into the industry by Gulzar Saheb. I began my career with a solo album with Gulzar Saheb called “Udaas Paani”. This experimental album was a musical saga of poetic moods and did exceedingly well. The success of “Udaas Paani” led us to collaborate on another eclectic album called ‘Raat Chand Aur Main”. After that there was no stopping and in the last decade, I have sung & composed the prestigious “Amazing India” series for music today, “Ritu” the magic of the 6 Indian seasons, “Raga Rendezvous” etc. Being a hard core musician at heart, albums give me extreme satisfaction but unfortunately the current market scenario is too Bollywood specific. Most albums today don’t get to release & reach out respectfully today.

What are your inspirations in music?

Mother Nature and a constantly nomadic free – spirited lifestyle have been my greatest inspirations. I am crazy about exploring untamed places, wilderness areas, old dilapidated structures, remote villages & sagas of unusual human lives etc. Such places have an uncanny aura & silver notes of melodies come running to my mind like droplets of rain. I am an active wildlife activist and I am also a Government bona fide tiger & leopard tracker. I run my own wildlife conservation project near Corbett National Park called sitabaniwildlifereserve.com.

What films are you looking forward to?

I have done some soul – stirring songs for a film called ‘Marriage Anniversary’ featuring Nana Patekar & Mahie Gill. I have also composed for ‘Saat Uchchakey’ produced by Neeraj Pandey & Tigmanshu Dhulia’s ‘Yaara’. Apart from these which will release shortly, I am currently working on 4 interesting films with diverse subjects.

“Marriage has hardly made any difference to my film career as I am ready to spring more surprises”: Kareena Kapoor

August 24, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

kareena-kapoor-khan

Kareena Kapoor Khan, no doubt has carried forward the legacy of Bollywood’s 1st ever filmy family namely that of the Kapoor Khandaan. In fact right from her debut making  movie ‘Refugee’ with Jr. Big B to her last released film ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ with Salman Khan she has proved her histrionic prowess with each successive movies that she has starred in. That apart she has undauntingly climbed the ladder of talent & success, step by step, even after tying the knot with the Jr. Nawab, namely Saif Ali Khan. Besides she feels that marriage has made absolutely no difference to her career and she is now ready to spring surprises galore in the Bollywoodian arena.

On reflecting back on her journey in Bollywood Kareena Kapoor Khan avers, “Of course my journey in Bollywood was not a smooth sailing in the initial stages of my filmic career. But then slowly & steadily I gained a strong foothold with films like ‘Dev’ & ‘Chameli’, my first ever off beat roles, ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Bodyguard’ & ‘3 Idiots’ to name just 5 films. Yet I feel that I have a lot more surprises in store.”

Continuing further she states, “My marriage to Saif has really made no difference to my career as unlike other married actresses in the past I was not forced to take a backseat or even forced to switch to character roles (Read mother’s role). In fact now I am offered the meatiest roles, that I can really sink my teeth into, of my career.”

She becomes defensive on being pointed that she hardly had any role in the Salman Khan starrer ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, “But sir you have yourself answered the question on my behalf.

In a commercial set up a heroine is lucky even if she is noticed. I won’t say that in a male dominated Bollywood films a heroine hardly gets a chance to prove her worth. To say so is like making lame excuses. Even otherwise ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ was more of an Harshali Malhotra (the wonder Kid) film. In fact the entire film centered around her journey from Pakistan to India and then how she is taken back to Pakistan by Bajrangi. So I was more than happy and I really enjoyed the role of a teacher in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. Besides it was not a love story but more of a dramatic film and since this was my 1st film with director Kabir Khan I could not refuse the opportunity as I had heard a lot about his excellent directorial skills and I really wanted to work with him regardless of the role that I was offered. But you also cannot take away the fact that Salman is a great person. I am honoured that he took me in his 1st film as a producer. Which actress would say no to a Kabir Khan movie with Salman Khan? I had not worked earlier in any film with Kabir Khan.”

In this regard she further comments, “Yet another temptation of taking up ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ was that it was shot in Kashmir. You see sir, everyone in my family except me had shot in Kashmir including my father Randhir Kapoor, my mother Babita Kapoor, my sister Karishma Kapoor, Uncle Chintu Kapoor & aunt Neetu Kapoor, grand uncles Shammi Kapoor & Shashi Kapoor and also my cousin, Ranbir Kapoor. Though I had not shot there earlier, when I had reached the venue, I could feel I was there at the Lalit Hotel in Kashmir. It was quite an eerie yet a totally fulfilling experience.”

Kareena then went on to add her feelings about Salman Khan, “Salman is one of the finest co – star that I have ever worked with. ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ is my hat trick film with Salman after ‘Kyon Ki’ & ‘Bodyguard’. I know Salman from the year 1990 when he was acting in Bhappi Soni’s ‘Nischay’ opposite my sister Karisma. Those days I was very raw & new to films. And in recent times Salman too has become a lot more calmer. In fact he is now mature enough not to show whatever comes his way in his personal life, on his work. Besides he is also one of the finest human being in Bollywood.”

On her striking a balance between the 2 arenas of films namely that of off beat cinema & commercial cinema Kareena has the following explaination to offer, “I have always felt that It is important enough to do commercial films. But on the other hand I have always wanted to strike a balance between off beat films & commercial films. I have done commercial films all my life. The big commercial bonanza films are a part of my blood. But I have also craved to do off beat films. So I think it is as important to do off beat films as it is to do commercial films. As commercial films helps you to earn name & fame whereas off beat films bring you histrionic recognition.”

Off beat films has helped Kareena to garner critical acclaim left, right & centre but notable awards trophies have mostly eluded her. Yet Kareena has no regrets whatsoever, “So what if the most prominent awards statutes have mostly eluded me. I am content with my body of work. What matters to me most is that my work has earned me more than recognition with my family & my fans too. I am indeed considered as one of the most versatile, most dependable & most bankable actress. More than that I am considered an actress of repute who can deliver the goods even in cameo roles. But then sometimes I am also being pulled up for doing cameo roles. Let me give a cliched reply for that, every actress has done such roles in her filmic career as a personal favour and so have I. But I also agree to do such cameo roles which forms an integral part of the film’s storyline. A case in point are films like ‘Gabbar Is Back’, ‘Brothers’ et al.”

That apart Kareena also takes pride in the fact that she has got the opportunity to act with all the Khans that too more than once. She avers, “I have worked with all the Khans, whether it is Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan or Aamir Khan or for that matter even with Saif in more than 1 film. I have always had a great professional tuning with Salman, Shahrukh & Aamir and of course both professional & personal tuning too, with Saif. Not only these I am also happy working with Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor et al. And finally I am also working with the younger lot. I mean It is a great honour for me that after working with Anil Kapoor, I am also working with Arjun Kapoor as his wife. And after working with him I felt that the younger generation of actors are also brilliant and a lot more aware & conscious. And I would also like to state that It is all about your passion and what you believe in. And in this regard I am also of the opinion that you needn’t be seen in every film as you are as old as you look.”

She also expressed her opinion regarding the return of the era of heroine oriented films, “But the era of the heroine oriented films was always omnipresent in all the time zone. At every turn it has strongly made its presence felt just as with the recent releases like ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’, ‘Piku’ et al. Just like In the 70’s era there were films like ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’, ‘Amar Prem’ et al where the heroines had strong roles. Even my own film ‘Jab We Met’ was also a heroine oriented film. In fact most of the times I have ended up doing heroine oriented films whether it was ‘Omkara’ or ‘Jab We Met’. ‘Omkara’ was a title role for the heroine but Saif played the lead. And for that matter I will not do a heroine oriented film till the script demands because everyone is doing one.”

And as a parting shot Kareena clarified her stance once again that marriage has certainly made no difference to her career wise, “What difference sir, as after marriage, only the surname Khan has been added to my name, moreover it was 15 years after I came in the film industry. It is indeed a big achievement for me that Salman is still ready to work with a married woman like me. I am also glad that Kabir thought of casting me ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. I should once again repeat that marriage has not made any difference to me. I have been an exception to the rule. I do not think I lost even one brand ever since I got married. After marriage I thought this is the time to work with new as well as different directors. After a certain stage in your career, it is nice to work with different people. Kabir Khan is also one of my favourite director as he makes larger than life kind of movies which are not mindless and which also has a strong story to narrate. And lastly please don’t ask me about my forthcoming fims. As I have many milestone achievements to conquer, but as usual I will speak about them just before its release and during its promotinal drives. Period!

August 22, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

The Gift

Producers: Jason Blum, Joel Edgerton & Rebecca Yeldham
Director: Joel Edgerton
Star Cast: Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall & Joel Edgerton
Genre: Thriller Suspense
Verdict: VERY GOOD

Debutante director in his debut offering The Gift, has presented a slick thriller in lieu with the constant twists & turns that will keep the movie goers on tenterhooks.

Plot: Simon & Robyn are a young married couple whose life is going just as planned until a chance encounter with an acquaintance from Simon’s high school sends their world into a harrowing tailspin. Simon doesn’t recognize Gordo at first, but after a series of uninvited encounters & mysterious gifts prove troubling, a horrifying secret from the past is uncovered after more than 2 decades.

Aces: Joel Edgerton’s skillful directional mastery in tandem with the outstanding performance by its trinity of actors namely Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall & director Joel Edgerton
himself.

Minuses: if only the length of the movie could have been trimmed by chopping of unwanted scenes on the editing table.

Last World: Director Joel Edgerton has come up with an excellent gift, so don’t miss The Gift at any cost.

Genre: Sci – Fi Adventure
Verdict: Average

Director Josh Trank has helmed the latest offering Fantastic Four a superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is the 3rd theatrical Fantastic Four film and a reboot of the Fantastic Four film franchise.

Plot: So the plotted scenario of Fantastic Four recounts, a contemporary re – imagining of Marvel’s original & longest running superhero team. Jordan) who teleport to an alternate & dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team ultimately learns to harness their daunting new abilities & work together to save the Earth from a former friend turned enemy.
