Movie Review: ‘Babanchi Shala’ is a good experimental effort

February 26, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Babanchi-Shala

Producer: Vilas Mane and Umesh Nathani
Director: R Viraj
Star Cast: Sayaji Shinde, Shashank Shende, Aishwarya Narkar, Kamlesh Sawant, Chhaya Kadam, Aarti More, Kartik Chavan etc
Genre: Drama
Verdict: AVERAGE

Plot: Babaanchi Shaala is the story of a father and a daughter and how they are separated by fate when the father burns his wife in a fit of anger and when he is sentenced and sent to jail. Then the story focuses on the relationship between a jailor and the prison inmates and the how the jailor tries to bring a change between the relationship of the prison inmates and his relatives in tandem with the society at large who always has reservations of accepting these prisoners back into the normal life. So the jailor then tries to build a bridge between them by devising a project named Babaanchi Shala and when he fails to get the Government’s approval for his project the jailor sets out on his own to work on this novel project.

Aces: Kudos to director R Viraj and also to the 1st time producers namely Vilas Mane and Umesh Nathani for making such a meaning film and all the actors too, headed by Sayaji Shinde, deserves a special mention for trying to give off their best.

Minuses: The oft repeated scenes, the slow pace of the movie devoid of any commercial aspects may prove to be a hindrance in its smooth sailing at the Box office turnstiles.

Last Word: The Marathi audience used to routine commercial fare may not accept this experimental film which will be appreciated more in film festival circuit and garner awards galore.

With Swedish regional film centre Film Väst & Poland’s Lava Films, Zentropa Sweden produced Swedish director Magnus von Horn’s The Here After, which was selected for Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes, and recently won a Guldbagga Award, Sweden’s national film prize, for “Best Film. HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY HELPS PROPEL NEW PARIS’ STUDIOS KREMLIN

Located in Ivry – sur -Seine, a fast developing pole for film & TV production on the outskirts of Paris, Studio Kremlin occupies a former factory building. It launched in 2014 and immediately shot to prominence as a production base for Hunger Games: Mockingjay parts 1 & 2. In 2015, it received 2 grants from the CNC to invest in its studio infrastructure, and has recently installed a 3 side green screen cyclorama. Due to being housed in a former industrial building, the studio has a very high ceiling that is extensively used by commercials & music videos that need to use drones inside the studio. The industrial setting also attracts shoots looking for post industrial decors. GALLIC TV DRAMAS BOOSTS EPINAY STUDIOS BIZ

Founded in 1907 by film lab & production company Eclair, Epinay Studios is France’s oldest studio complex, used by greats such as Marcel Carne, Jean Renoir, Milos Forman & Bertrand Blier. Epinay has 4 studios, including its famous 16,145 sq. ft. “F” stage, plus two 8,600 sq. ft. stages and one 2,150 sq. ft. stage. Last year was a strong one for the studio, according to sales executive Eric Moreau. Productions included a major primetime comedy TV series, Peps (a French acronym for “parents, students and teachers”), which has been lensing at Epinay for the past 3 years, occupying the two 8,600 sq. ft.stages. It has just completed its final season. Moreau explains that there is increasing demand for studio space to film TV fiction, but that it’s important to reserve space for cinema production. For example, in 2015, Olivier Baroux’s comedy Entre Amis, starring Daniel Auteuil, wanted to film at Epinay, but due to lack of studio space, had to film in Luc Besson’s Cité du Cinema.

INTERNET INFRASTRUCTURE A BIG CONCERN FOR NETFLIX

But while Netflix content will now be available in all 54 African nations, the streaming giant enters a region where Internet penetration, at just under 20%, is the world’s lowest. The mobile phone boom has helped bring Web access to an estimated 300 million Africans and growing, but high data costs & spotty connectivity have made it difficult for many VOD services to gain traction. “The infrastructure, generally, isn’t really here for streaming long – form content,” says Jason Njoku, founder of iRoko TV, widely referred to as the Netflix of Africa. “For millions, the data price points are way too high to pay for content streaming.” Recognising the challenges, iRoko switched to a mobile – 1st, Android – 1st, download – only version for its Africa platform last year. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has noted that his company is working on video -compression technology that will enable it to deliver data quickly “on any device in any broadband condition.”

NETFLIX FACES CHALLENGES AS IT PLANS A GLOBAL LAUNCH

Wealthy & westernized, Australia & Japan (where Netflix debuted in 2015) are worlds apart from India, which boasts a huge English speaking population and a fanatical film culture, but has poor broadband connectability and a host of formidable local players. That in turn minimizes the erosive effects of piracy in the world’s 2nd largest theatrical marketplace, and maximizes the effect of the global publicity & marketing campaigns. Chinese regulators have often appeared to want to throttle or limit the box office performance of Hollywood movies, in order to ensure that Chinese productions have a majority market share, but that is not always the case. China was the last country in the world to open Star Wars: The Force Awakens opening on 9th Jan, 2016, 3 or more weeks after most other territories.

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE & BRUCE LEE TO BE HONORED

William Shakespeare & Bruce Lee are both to be honored at the upcoming Hong Kong International Film Festival to be held from 21st Mar, 2016 to 4th Apr, 2016. Marking the festival’s 40th edition & 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, the HKIFF will program 3 vastly different film interpretations of Shakespeare’s stage play “Macbeth.” The trio are Akira Kurosawa’s Throne Of Blood, Roman Polanski’s The Tragedy Of Macbeth & last year’s Macbeth by star Australian director Justin Kurzel. “Macbeth’ has challenged film makers around the world as they have reimagined the interplay of fate & magic, human motivations & soul wrenching questions of loyalty & destiny. Yet, the violence at the heart of the play, with battles, beheadings & assassinations, also imposes demands on actors & audiences as powerful as the poetry of the Bard’s composition,” the festival said in a note.

Reviving a local legend, the HKIFF will also present restored, digital versions of 4 Bruce Lee starring films. It will screen Lee’s 1971 Hong Kong homecoming The Big Boss; nunchaku wielding 1972 epic The Fist Of Fury; The Way of the Dragon, which Lee also directed & The Game Of Death, the 1978 movie assembled & released 5 years after Lee’s death.

Music Composer Khayyam Turns 90 Years

February 22, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

khayyam

On the occasion of Khayyam’s 90th birthday he & his wife announced the formation of “Khayyam Pradeep Jagjit Kaur” Trust and its trustees! Ghazal singer Talat Aziz as one of the trustees. Leading light of the Indian Music Fraternity, legendary music director Khayyam Saab celebrated his 90th birth anniversary. Recipient of the National Award – Government of India, Khayyam Saab is among the last living composers of Hindi films’ golden era of music.

The evening had Khayyam Saab & his wife Mrs. Jagjit Kaur announce the Trust & its trustees which was the highlight of the evening. The name of the trust is “Khayyam Pradeep Jagjit Kaur (KPJ Charitable Trust)” to extend a helping hand to all the needy & the aspiring people from Music Fraternity. Khayyam Saab has given away his entire wealth for the trust. Khayyam Saab also announced renowned Ghazal singer Talat Aziz as one of the trustees of “Khayyam Pradeep Jagjit Kaur Trust (KPJ Charitable Trust)” .

Fans & well wishers came to wish Khayaam Saab on his 90th Birth Anniversary. The evening also saw the presence of Talat Aziz & Bina Aziz.

Recalling his special association with him Talat Aziz averred, “Khayyam Saab is a living legend. The Indian Music Industry has never witnessed a gem like him. There was another aspect of Khayyam Saab’s work that sets him apart from other composers namely his non – filmi ghazals. Do you know that he is the only composer whose compositions Begum Akhtar recorded for HMV in her entire career? Otherwise she has sung only her own songs. Throughout his career and especially during his sabbaticals from Bollywood, he recorded many ghazals including 1 album with Rafi Saheb which drew a niche but devoted set of fans. I am overwhelmed to be a part of this evening as everyone knows that he was the 1st one to introduce me to the world of film music in the classic Umrao Jaan. And speaking of Umrao Jaan who can forget “Dil cheez kya hai aap meri jaan lijiye” sung brilliantly by none other than Ashaji. His songs in films with all the greats like Talat Mahmood, Lataji, Rafi Saheb, Mukesh ji are now part of Bollywood music history. May God Bless him with good health.”

Music director Khayyam Saab has composed music for just over 50 films in his long career, yet his impact on listeners has been far greater than many who scored for several hundred movies. Like Dilip Kumar amongst actors, Khayyam Saab too shines out with his majestic performance. No wonder connoisseurs hold Khayyam
Saab in high esteem for his immaculate standards of musical harmony, as his creativity symbolises Victor Hugo’s irrefutable belief that “music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent”.

Choosing a favourite from his songs is a difficult proposition, but who can ever forget the pious yearning of “Woh subah kabhi toh aayegi”, the heart wrenching “Jaane kya dhoondhti rehti hain ye aankhen”, the cry of “Bujha diye hain khud apne haathon se”, the romantic tease of “Thehriye hosh mein aa lun toh chale jaayega” or the love ballad of “Kahin ek masoom nazuk si ladki”?

Naming some of his few films namely Phir Subha Hogi (1958), Shagoon (1964), Aakhri Khat (1966), Kabhie Kabhie (1976), Trishul (1978),Thodisi Bewafaii (1980), Umrao Jaan (1981), Dard (1981), Ahista Ahista (1981), Bazaar (1982) et

Khayyam Saab was the only Music Composer whose composition Begum Akhtar recorded for HMV in her entire career. Khayyam was still to deliver his best and the opportunity came in Muzaffar Ali’s Umrao Jaan in 1981. He made Asha Bhonsle sing songs which are indisputably her best. “In Aankhon ki masti ke”, “Ye Kya Jagah hai doston” & “Dil Cheez kya hai” are evergreen.

Khayyam Saab, who never kept a team of assistants, credits his success to his beloved wife Jagjit Kaur & his son Late Pradeep whose been a part of his musical journey applauding them as his greatest strength and inspiration. Khayyam Saab was always effusive with his praise for his wife Jagjit Kaur. She may have been behind the scenes but was a key element in Khayyam Saab’s success. It seems appropriate to recognize their partnership with the only film song they sang together “Kab yaad mein tera saath nahin’ (Anjuman, 1986).

Declared as one of the greatest Bollywood Music Directors of all time, Khayyam Saab has triumphed upon the hearts of millions with his unique style of music. He has carved his name on prestigious awards like: “Best Music Director Of The Millennium” – Government of Punjab, Filmfare “Lifetime Achievement Award”, Madhya Pradesh “State Award”, “Ashok Award” – Government of Punjab, BFJA’s “Best Music Director” Award, UPFJA’s “Best Music Of Quarter Century” Award, K.L. Saigal Award by Javitri Vikas Samiti, Sangeet Natak Award Academy, Government of Maharashtra Award, Deenanath Mangeshkar Award, CINTAA Award, IMPPA Award, Urdu Marakaz Mumbai Award, Shri Yash Laxmi Art Pune, Award, Awami Haridas Award, Bhagwati Saraswati Puraskar, Talkie 75 Scroll of Honour, MAMI Award, Naushad Sangeet Kendra Samman, Cinegoer Association Award, Asha Bhosle Puraskar, to name a few.

Movie Review: ‘Direct Ishq’ is a run of the mill fare masala entertainer which will attract viewers of single theatre

February 19, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Direct Ishq

Producer: Pradeep Sharma
Director: Rajeev S. Ruia
Star Cast: Rajniesh Dugall, Arjun Bijlani, Nidhi Subaiah, Hemant Pandey, Sanoj Dube, Padam Singh, Rajkumar Kanojia etc
Genre: Rom Com
Verdict: AVERAGE

Director Rajeev S. Ruia’s earlier claim to fame has been a series of interesting films like My Friend Ganesha in its varied avatars but in his latest offering Direct Ishq he has gone slightly overboard.

Plot: Vicky Shukla (Rajniesh Duggall) is a local boy from Banaras. A president of the Kaashi Vidyapeeth, Vicky is a rough and tough, aggressive boy who believes in always having a revolver with him, because he is always up for a fight. But this boldness turns into complete shyness when interacting with girls. He soon meets Dolly Pandey (Nidhi Subhaiah), who is bubbly, mischievous and doll like, and falls in love with her. On the other hand Kabeer Bajpai (Arjun Bijlani) is a smart and good looking boy born in a rich family of Banaras but educated in Mumbai and works there doing music shows and events. His grandmother wants to fix him up with her friend’s daughter, but instead Kabeer Bajpai meets Dolly Pandey and also falls in love with her, while helping her make a career as a professional singer.

Aces: The performance of the trio of actors is impressive. Rajniesh Dugall is lovable as a rough and tough guy of village with a good screen presence. Nidhi Subaiah is good to some extent but not entirely convincing and as for debutante Arjun Bijlani he is okay but the song and dance routine does not seem to be his cup of tea.

Minuses: It lacks good musical track in spite of the fact that the triangular love story has a musical rock band backdrop.

Last Word: Direct Ishq is a masala entertainer especially meant for the mass audience of single theatre but it won’t curry much favour with the classy audience of multiplex.

Movie Review: ‘Spotlight’ is a highly sensitive & riveting movie about child sex abuse in the Catholic church

February 19, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Spotlight

Producer: Blye Pagon Faust, Steve Golin, Nicole Rocklin & Micheal Sugar
Director: Tom McCarthy
Star Cast: Mark Ruffalo, Micheal Keaton, Racheal McAdams, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci & Brian D’Arcy James
Genre: Suspense
Verdict: GOOD

After having directed many films like Meet The Parents, Good night and Good Luck director Tom McCarty has touched upon a sensitive subject of child sex abuse in the Catholic Church.

Plot: Spotlight narrates the true story of the Pulitzer Prize – winning Boston Globe investigation that rocked the city and caused a crisis in one of the world’s oldest and most trusted institutions. When the newspaper’s tenacious “Spotlight” team of reporters delves into allegations of child sex abuse in the Catholic Church, their year – long investigation uncovers a decades – long cover – up at the highest levels of Boston’s religious, legal, and Government establishment, touching off a wave of revelations around the world. Directed by Academy Award -nominee Tom McCarthy, Spotlight is a tense investigative dramatic -thriller, tracing the steps to one of the biggest cover – ups in modern times.

Aces: The finest performances of the entire ensemble cast and the credit for which undoubtedly goes to Tom McCarthy at helm of the directorial affair.

Minuses: The long yawn inducing boring conversations amongst themselves of the members of the fourth estate in the press room and in the 1st half of the film it hardly moves out of the press room.

Last Word: Spotlight is a very relevant and sensitive film which may be liked by classy audience but may not be palatable for the mass audience.

BHK Bhalla@Halla.Kom is indeed a thought provoking film: Rakesh Chaturvedi

February 17, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Rakesh Chaturvedi. Photo: Mid-Day

Writer turned director turned actor turned producer Rakesh Chaturvedi had made his directorial debut with a film called Bolo Ram and now his next film is BHK Bhalla@Halla.Kom that apart he has 2 more projects tucked up his sleeves which have been tentatively titled as Tandon Marega Sala & Sorry Chachoo respectively. And which will go on the floors soon enough.

Describe your directorial experiences between your debut film Bolo Raam & your 2nd directorial outing namely BHK Bhalla@Halla.Kom?

Actually speaking I feel that it is the genre which is different in both the films which made me to have a different experiences all the time But of course the rest of the directorial process was the same.

So what is your latest directorial offering BHK Bhalla@Halla.Kom all about?

Frankly speaking my latest offering BHK Bhalla@Halla.Kom is a movie which will make us to think what happens sometimes when our society norms put us on test.

Does the film BHK Bhalla@Halla.Kom offer any message?

Yes it does and that is, the quest for more is never ending. So we have to choose precisely what we want between our need & our greed, otherwise we will never grow and the situation will be keep throwing us in the same circle. Needless to say I am trying to say the same thing in my latest directorial offering namely BHK Bhalla@Halla.Kom, but of course not in a preachy sort of way but very subtly tickling the audience’s ribs with an unconventional climax and it will be totally depending on person to person as to what he or she gains from BHK Bhalla@Halla.Kom at the end.

Was there any reference point to make BHK Bhalla@Halla.Kom or you observed this as part of a society?

To be absolutely frank I had myself, experienced the basic idea of this film several times in my personal as well as professional life.

As a creative individual, were you always interested in production & direction or even acting?

To answer this query let me rearrange the order of subjects in your question. So here is how it goes, acting, writing, direction & production! I hope you got the answer according to the order of the subjects of your question.

So tell us how was the experience when you were assisting Rahul Dholakia during the making of Parzania?

Actually speaking I had joined Rahul Dholakia as a casting director in Parzania but Rahul Dholakia & Parzania blessed me to experience the varied parts of film making and also injected an interest of writing & direction in my veins.

By the way do you still pursue theatre as you have also done theatre and have been a National School of Drama student.

Yes I do. I still do exclusive theatre with Naseeruddin Shah’s theatre group Motley as an actor and will keep doing it unconditionally.

It seems that you have also assisted well known talented writers and also written several Hindi films. So what interests you the most, writing, direction or production?

The only thing that really interests or rather excites me the most is good concepts or good ideas or any relevant situation that really provokes me to do writing, direction or production. I really put my best efforts in each & every department when it comes to giving my voice for anything which is important to say.

So After BHK Bhalla@Halla.Kom, What is next on your agenda? And are you planning any projects of late?

Yup, I am indeed planning 2 more projects which are soon going on the floors back to back, and both of them are tentatively titled Tandon Marega Sala & Sorry Chachoo respectively.

Will your next 2 projects also be based on comic lines?

I personally think that you can say so, but this time they will border on 2 totally different patterns of comedy. To make it more clear one of the fIlm will be a comic thriller and the other film will be based on satirical take off. Now you keep guessing which of the 2 forthcoming films of mine will be based on which pattern.

Loveshhuda is yonger generation’s coming of age film for one & all: Girish Kumar

February 17, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

girish-kumar

Girish Kumar, of Ramaiya Vastavaiya fame, is a cool dude albeit a bit shy. But that was when he had donned the grease paint & faced the arc lights for his debut film Ramaiya Vastavaiya, but of late he is pretty chilled out and quite confident of himself and his polished acting skills especially after giving the final touches to his latent histrionics in his 2nd outing named Lovesshuda which is on the verge of release on 19th Feb, 2016.

You hail from a musical family of Tips Music Company then how come you have drifted into the acting arena?

Sorry to say but those days are gone when the sons or daughters of a doctor, a lawyer or a teacher had to unarguably follow in the footsteps of their father’s profession. To be very frank I always wanted to be an actor since I was that high. I never thought of anything else beyond acting. And I am grateful to my father Kumar Taurani for giving me on a platter a perfect launchpad in Ramaiya Vastavaiya with Prabhu Dheva sir at the directorial helm of affairs and above all Kamal Hassan sir’s extremely talented daughter Shruti Hassan as my co – star. What more could I have asked for?

Girish Kumar

Facts are facts your debut film Ramaiya Vastavaiya was not exactly a runaway hit film nor did it hit the bull’s eye as expected. So how much did you benefit from it?

May be I did not gain much from it from the financial and creative point of view. Nor did I get offers galore after its release. But I did gain a vast knowledge & more experience. I was too young & naïve, maybe a little immature too at that point of time. But today I consider myself mature enough to handle & further my filmy career on my own steam. In the meanwhile I have further polished my acting skills. I feel I am more confident enough now to do better & better work and really carve a niche for myself as the most dependable actor, mind you not a replaceable actor.

Fine but tell us why was there such a bill lull in your debut film Ramaiya Vastavaiya and now Lovesshuda releasing this week?

As they say everything happens for the best. True enough destiny too has its own part in our life & career yet in spite of all the hurdles, today I feel solely responsible for whatever decisions I take regarding my career. Its also true that my father could have relaunched me with another much better project but then I would not have become so serious regarding my acting career. So this time around I really wanted to struggle on my own and go through the whole grind and for that I totally went through a change in my persona too, including my hairstyle which was so unruly then and perfectly in order now.

You had done all your action sequences yourself in Ramaiya Vastavaiya like Akshay Kumar does in his all his movies. So will you continue to do so and keep following in his footsteps?

What do I say as Akshay Kumar is a veteran actor, I cannot compete or compare myself with him. If I will get a chance to hang out with him, then maybe I will become like him.

By the way did your father’s name help you in your career or did you struggle to bag the chance on your own?

Just because I am producer Kumar Taurani’s son doesn’t mean I did not struggle. I had my own share of struggle but not like other debutante actors. Yes, I got an opportunity but it was all about achieving the goal as I did. Only after taking my audition, did Prabhu Dheva sir displayed his contentment and had said to my father that we will be working together. And I am really happy that I debuted with Prabhu Dheva sir’s film namely Ramaiya Vastavaiya.

Ok now time to tell us about your role in your upcoming film Lovesshuda which is all set to release this week.

Well! I would describe Lovesshuda as Generation X’s coming of age film. It is the story of a boy next door. He also has this carefree lifestyle like just freaking out with his friends, like boys born with a golden spoon always do. He is very down to earth too.

Please continue!

So once he goes out with his coterie of friends for a bachelor’s night out party. During the party he gets totally sozzled out and the next morning he wakes up sharing his bed with a complete stranger, a girl and from then on a completely strange love story develops between the two of them.

But don’t you think the title Lovesshuda is very unusual?

What’s so strange & unusual about it? If a boy & a girl can be known as shaaadishuda after entering into matrimony. Then why can’t a boy & a girl be known as lovesshuda after they are smitten with each other, I mean after they have fallen completely in love with each other.

What according to you are the highlights of Lovesshuda?

First of all its strange love story and then music is the highpoint of the film. Now let the director Vaibhav Mishra reveal the rest of the highlights of Lovesshuda.

And what would you like to say about your director Vaibhav Mishra?

I would say that my director Vaibhav Mishra is a cool & chilled out guy. Being a youthful & dynamic guy himself, he really understands the pulse of today’s younger generation. During the making of Lovesshuda he gave us also gave full freedom to improvise our lines & scenes. Though sometimes I really used to hate him, especially when he really used to make me drink a lot for all my sozzled up scenes in Lovesshuda for authenticity.

Ok as a parting shot tell us what is next on your histrionics agenda?

Right now I am like an excited, anxious & tension filled student who is waiting with batted breath for his Friday Box Office results.

I don’t think you expect any more lull in your film career. Do you?

No not at all. A couple of films are lined up and I am reading a lot of scripts also to select the right kind of roles for myself. Even otherwise I consider Lovesshuda as one more litmus test of my career. As I not only worked very hard for it but also enjoyed a lot during the filming of Lovesshuda.
