Lalit Modi reveals blueprint of breakaway cricket body to rival ICC

August 10, 2015 by Nasheman

Lalit Modi

London: He is living in exile and facing arrest but that has not stopped sacked IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi from preparing the blueprint for a breakaway governing body for cricket to rival the ICC — a plan which he claims is the future “world order”.

Modi, who faces allegations of financial impropriety and is currently based here, said the new body would be affiliated with the Olympic movement and oversee Test and T20 competitions, while scrapping the ODI format altogether.

“We’re talking about another cricketing system. There is a blueprint out there, it’s got my rubber stamp on it,” Modi told the ‘Australian Broadcasting Corporation’.

“I have been involved in it. I say it for the first time, I’ve been involved in putting that blue print together. We could take on the existing establishment, no problem. It requires a few billion dollars, I don’t think it would be a problem to get that … into action,” he said.

“The plan that I have put together is a very detailed plan, it’s not a plan that’s come off the cuff, it’s been taking years and years and years in the making,” he added.

Modi, a pariah in cricket after he was sacked in 2010 as commissioner of the very league he conceptualized, has an arrest warrant against him based on the Enforcement Directorate’s allegations.

Modi, on his part, has vehemently denied all charges against him. The controversial administrator said his plan would only fail if the ICC, currently headed by his nemesis and former BCCI President N Srinivasan, carries out reforms.

“I hope that print [the blueprint] doesn’t take off. But if the people can’t continue, then that print will take off and that blueprint will become the world order tomorrow. I guarantee you that, sitting here today,” he said.

Modi said his blueprint comprises a calendar of events to rival the ICC’s schedule in Tests and T20 games. “The plan conceives only of Test cricket and T20; it doesn’t take into account one-day at all. I think that is completely redundant in today’s day and age. I think it should just be T20 and Test matches that should be played,” he said.

Modi said the ICC should look to get the International Olympic Committee’s affiliation. “I have been proposing that. The ICC will never agree to that; never means never. It is a plan that one day, if I ever implement it, will re-write history in sport. “IPL has re-written history in sport in the way it’s marketed. I think this will re-write history once again.”

Nitish to launch new campaign, says 50 lakh people will send DNA samples to Modi

August 10, 2015 by Nasheman

Modi-Nitish-

Patna: The war of words between Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached a new level with Nitish’s new ‘shabdwapsi’ campaign.

Hitting back at Modi for his DNA remark, Nitish tweeted today, “In this shabdwapsi /take back your words/ campaign, at least 50 lakh people of Bihar will join the campaign and send their DNA samples to Modiji for test.”

Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United and Lalu Prasad’s Rashtriya Janata Dal are expected to launch this campaign jointly and send DNA samples of at least 50 lakh people to the Prime Minister.

Two weeks back, PM Modi had made the controversial statement that deceit and treachery are in the Chief Minister’s DNA. Nitish questioned the remark in an open letter to the PM and asked him to withdraw those remarks as it insulted the people of Bihar.

Inspite of our repeated pleas Modiji hasn’t retracted his derogatory remarks on our DNA, we’re going to launch शब्दवापसी /TakeBackYourWords

DNAके अपने वक्तव्य को वापिस न लेने की मोदीजी की हठधर्मिता और फिर कल गया रैली में बिहार को बीमारू और लोगों को दुर्भाग्यशाली बताना क्षोबनीय है

beef-export

New Delhi: Despite Modi government’s move to ban slaughter of cow across various states in the country, India is the largest exporter of beef in the world.

According to a report in The Hindu, India retained it’s top position as the world’s leading exporter of beef and even extended its lead over Brazil, citing a data released by the US Department of Agriculture.

As per the data, India exported 2.4 million tonnes of beef and veal in the financial year 2015 as compared to 2 the million tonnes exported by Brazil. During the same period, Australia exported 1.5 million tonnes, the report said.

And while these three countries account for 58.7 percent of all the beef exports in the world, India alone accounted for 23.5 percent of the exports, a significant rise from the 20.8 percent share that it had in the previous year.

According to reports, cow slaughter is banned in the following states of India – Andhra Pradesh, Telangana , Bihar, Chattisgarh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

In Assam, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, it is permitted with slaughter certificates.

However, in Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura, cow slaughter is permitted.

CHINA HAD A RECORD JULY 2015 AT THE BOX OFFICE

The Chinese box office sector enjoyed its biggest Jul, 2015 of all time with a record $898 million (RMB5.49 billion) take. Ticket sales hit 159 million. China’s State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film & Television said recently that the Jul, 2015 performance lifted the cash total so far this year to RMB25.9 billion. That compares with the $4.82 billion (RMB29.6 billion) in the full 12 months of 2014. It seems likely that the 2014 total will be overtaken in late Aug, 2015 or early Sept, 2015. Chinese authorities have been operating a blackout period or “domestic film protection month,” since 19th Jun, 2015. During this time major foreign films are not allowed new releases. And SAPPRFT reported that Chinese films accounted for more than 95% of the Jul, 2015 total. Hits ‘Monster Hunt’, ‘Pancake Man’ & ‘Monkey King: Hero Is Back’ drove the total. While the blackout periods are regarded by Hollywood studios as Government orchestrated distortions of the Chinese cinema market, the current summer hiatus follows a huge 1st half for US made movies.

Bauer, himself Jewish, has been trying to take crimes from the Third Reich to court ever since his return from exile in Denmark, but without success due to the fierce German determination to repress its past. Because of his distrust in the German justice system, Bauer contacts the Israeli secret service Mossad, and, in doing so, commits treason.

MUNDOFOX SHUTS DOWN NEWS DIVISION

MundoFox is now MundoMax. In the wake of Fox International Channels’ mid – Jul, 2015 decision to sell its stake in the joint venture to its Colombian partner RCN TV Group, MundoFox has taken on a new name. RCN, which now owns 100% of the fledgling US Spanish language network, “is wholly committed to the success of MundoMax,” MundoMax President Ibra Morales said in a statement. The broadcast network will be officially re -branded on its 3rd anniversary, on 13 Aug, 2015, said Morales, who joined the network in Jan, 2014, replacing FIC’s Emiliano Saccone. However, MundoMax has shuttered its news division, laying off almost 40 staffers in the process. ‘Although we have cancelled ‘Noticias MundoFox,’ RCN Television Group continues its dedication to bringing quality news coverage to the vibrant & dynamic US Hispanic community,” said Morales, who expects the bulk of MundoMax’s entertainment & news programming to debut next year. “We are currently evaluating our entire portfolio of content and restructuring it with the goal of bringing maximum value to all our stakeholders, including our viewers, clients & affiliates,” he added.

GERARD BANED FROM UKRAINE

French actor Gerard Depardieu, who was granted a Russian passport from Vladimir Putin in Jan, 2013, has been banned from entering Ukraine for 5 years. The ban, ordered by the country’s culture minister Ivan Kirilenko & proclaimed by the national secret services, reportedly sanctions Depardieu for making public comments suggesting that he supported Russia’s annexation of Crimea in Mar, 2014. Earlier this month, Kirilenko had revealed that Depardieu was blacklisted along with 117 prominent entertainment figures “who have spoken out in support of the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity & sovereignty.” Depardieu’s decision to become a Russian citizen 2 years caused a public backlash & diplomatic incident in France where he was accused of fleeing the country to avoid paying high taxes. The actor has however demonstrated his attachment to Russia throughout the years and routinely defends Russia’s international policies in the media. At 66, the actor is still leading a dynamic career. His latest movie, Guillaume Nicloux’s ‘Valley Of Love’ world premiered in competition at Cannes and he has been cast to topline ‘Marseille’, Netflix’s 1st French language original drama series.

DISCOVERY COMMUNICATIONS EXPANDS FOOTPRINT

In a further sign that Turkey is a hot TV market, Discovery Communications is expanding its Turkish footprint by forging a pact to buy free – to – air news & entertainment channel CNBC – e from prominent privately owned Dogus Media Group, which will also become Discovery’s exclusive ad sales representative in the country where consumer spending is steadily increasing. The strategic alliance with Dogus Media Group comes after Discovery opened a local office in 2012 and attained full distribution across all major Turkish pay – TV platforms. CNBC – e, which offers a mixture of news, international entertainment & scripted content which makes it popular with Turkish young adults, will mark Discovery’s 1st foray into Turkey’s pay – TV segment and increase its portfolio to 13 channels. The others are dedicated to documentaries, factual entertainment & sports. 4 of Discovery Networks’ pay – Tv channels currently rank within the top 10 most frequently watched pay TV channels in Turkey. Kasia Kieli, topper of Discovery Networks Central & Eastern Europe, Middle East & Africa boasted in a statement that the move “will see us reach the next level in Turkey.”

AUSTRIA IS THE NEW HOTSPOT

This Friday’s release of ‘Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation’ will put the spotlight on Austria, one of the principal locations for the Tom Cruise movie and the country’s 25% production incentive. Later this year, the release of James Bond movie ‘Spectre’ will underscore the attractions of the Central European territory, as Austria provided key locations for that movie too. Both productions received financial support from Film Location Austria, which offers a production incentive worth up to 25% of the local spend for projects that shoot for at least 5 days on location in Austria, up to an upper limit of Euros 1.5 million ($1.65 million). “Mission: Impossible” received Euros 750,000 ($824,000) against a local spend of Euros 3 million ($3.3 million), while ‘Spectre’ received Euros 1.5 million ($1.65 million), against a local spend of Euros 6 million ($6.59 million). The funding for ‘Spectre’ came both from Film Location Austria & regional funds. “Mission: Impossible” shot a number of sequences in the Austrian capital, Vienna, last year, the most spectacular of which was on the roof of the Vienna State Opera, which was also the venue of the movie’s world premiere last week.

AXEL ENDS MERGER TALKS

German broadcasting giant ProSiebenSat.1 Media & German publishing titan Axel Springer have ended an attempt to merge, which would have created a business worth around Euros 14.4 billion ($15.9 billion). “ProSieben is not planning or contemplating a merger with Axel Springer,” Julian Geist, a ProSiebenSat.1 spokesman, said recently. Instead the companies will jointly launch a project to promote digital start – ups. The merger would have faced regulatory & anti – trust challenges. A move by Springer 10 years ago to buy ProSiebenSat.1 failed after opposition from Germany’s media watchdog KEK and the country’s anti -trust body. However, the media landscape has changed since then, with the rise of digital rivals. Last year, the Federal Administrative Court over. ruled the KEK’s objections to a merger, and the more competitive landscape would probably nullify any anti – trust concerns. Another obstacle that may have stopped the merger is that the Springer family wanted to keep control of Axel Springer even if its stake dropped under 50% from the 57% share it has now.

England thrash Australia to regain the Ashes

August 8, 2015 by Nasheman

Ben Stokes

Nottingham: England regained the Ashes by sealing an innings and 78-run victory over Australia on the third day of the fourth Test here on Saturday.

England needed only three wickets to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series and they took it without much trouble at Trent Bridge. Australia were bowled out for 253 runs in their second innings.

They claimed those three wickets within an hour of play on Saturday. Pacer Ben Stokes claimed a wicket on Saturday to end with figures of 6-36 in the second innings.

The win caps a remarkable reversal from the 0-5 whitewash suffered by England Down Under in 2013-14.

Stokes second over of the morning set England on their course for victory as he claimed the opening breakthrough, forcing Mitchell Starc to edge one to Ian Bell at second slip for a duck.

Fellow pacer Mark Wood got in on the act as he bowled Josh Hazlewood (0) as England sensed victory in double-quick time with barely an hour of the morning session having passed.

Adam Voges (51) did go to his half century but it was his partner Lyon whose wicket led to the regaining of the Ashes, as he played on off the bowling of Wood to spark scenes of wild celebration as England reached the crowning moment.

England took a giant step on their road to victory when Australia collapsed to just 60 all out in 111 balls on Thursday with right-arm Stuart Broad taking eight for 15.

Within moments of the loss, Australian captain Michael Clarke announced his retirement after the final Ashes Test at The Oval cricket ground, in London, this month.

He told Channel 9: “The time is right. I want to play the last Test at The Oval and give it one more crack. I’ll take so many memories away. I’m looking forward to sitting and cheering the boys on. It’s the right time.”

England have now won five of the last seven Ashes series and the last four at home.

by Nadia Prupis, Common Dreams

As of Saturday, a deadly 24 hours in Afghanistan has seen more than 44 people killed and hundreds wounded in a wave of attacks on a military base and other sites in Kabul.

Among those killed were dozens of civilians and service members, including one NATO soldier. The attacks targeted a police academy, a residential area, and the military base Camp Integrity, all in Kabul.

The nationality of the NATO soldier has not yet been released. One international service member and eight Afghan contractors were killed in the attack on Camp Integrity, with several others wounded. The bombing of the police academy killed at least 20 and wounded 24, when a man dressed in a police uniform reportedly detonated an explosive vest as recruits lined up for classes.

The Guardian reports:

While the truck bomb exploded outside a Ministry of Defence base, the exact purpose remains unclear, and the timing of the attack [at 1am] was unusual. According to a security source speaking to the Guardian, the US military frequently visits the Afghan army base in Shah Shaheed, which also contains a facility housing several high-level detainees.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahed, said the group was responsibile for the attack on the police academy, but no one has yet claimed the truck bomb attack or the assault on Camp Integrity.

Reuters adds:

Previously seen as open to reviving peace talks, the Taliban have since pledged to press on with the insurgency that has killed and wounded thousands this year.

….The conflict between the Western-backed government and the Taliban has intensified since the NATO combat mission ended last year, but Afghan security forces and civilians have borne the brunt of the violence.

There have been almost 5,000 civilian casualties in Afghanistan in the first half of the year, U.N. figures show.

No death penalty for Colorado theatre massacre gunman

Jury fails to agree on capital punishment, meaning James Holmes will serve life in prison without parole for 12 murders.

by Al Jazeera

United States theatre gunman James Holmes will be sentenced to life in prison without parole after a jury failed to agree on whether he should get the death penalty for his murderous attack on a packed movie premiere in Colorado in 2012.

The nine women and three men said on Friday that they could not reach a unanimous verdict on each of the murder counts. That automatically eliminates the death penalty for the failed neuroscientist, who blamed his calculated murders of 12 people on mental illness.

Prosecutors argued Holmes deserved to die because he methodically planned the 2012 assault at a midnight screening of a Batman movie, even blasting techno music through ear phones so he wouldn’t hear his victims scream.

The same jury had rejected his insanity defence, finding Holmes capable of understanding right from wrong when he murdered 12 people and tried to kill 70 others.

But the defence countered that his schizophrenia led to a psychotic break, and that powerful delusions drove him to carry out one of the nation’s deadliest mass shootings.

There was never any question during the gruelling, four-month trial as to whether Holmes was the killer.

Holmes surrendered outside the theatre, where police found him clad head-to-toe in combat gear.

The trial hinged instead on the question of whether a mentally ill person should be held legally and morally culpable for an act of unspeakable violence.

It took jurors only about 12 hours of deliberations to decide the first part – they rejected his insanity defence and found him guilty of 165 felony counts.

The defence then conceded his guilt, but insisted during the sentencing phase that his crimes were caused by the psychotic breakdown of a mentally ill young man, reducing his moral culpability and making a life sentence appropriate.

The jury’s final decision came after days of tearful testimony from relatives of the slain.

Palestinian baby’s father also dies from settler attack

August 8, 2015 by Nasheman

by Al Jazeera

The father of the Palestinian 18-month-old baby boy who died in last week’s settler arson attack in the occupied West Bank has also died from his wounds.

Saad Dawabsheh, the father of Ali, died early on Saturday, his brother told Al Jazeera.

The 32-year-old died in Soroka hospital, where he had been treated for second-degree burns to more than 80 percent of his body.

Al Jazeera’s Imtiaz Tyab, reporting from West Jerusalem, said Saad’s wife, Riham, and four-year-old son Ahmad remain in critical condition, in Tel Hashomer hospital.

“His mother and brother also remain at the hospital. They both remain in very serious condition.

“In fact the mother’s condition for several days was thought to be worse than the father’s so the fact that he succumbed to his wounds raises alot of concern about her,” Tyab said.

Early last Saturday morning, a firebomb was thrown into the family’s bedroom in a suspected settler arson attack, setting the house alight.

A funeral is expected to be held later on Saturday in Duma, where last week’s attack took place.

The Palestine Liberation Organization has said it holds Israel’s government “fully responsible” for the death of the 18-month-old baby and will lodge a complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The attack was roundly condemned around the world, including by Israeli leaders, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ringing Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and saying they must fight “terrorism” together.

The US state department condemned the “vicious terrorist attack” in “the strongest possible terms”, urging Israel to “apprehend the murderers” and calling on both sides to “avoid escalating tensions”.

According to the UN, at least 120 attacks by Israeli settlers have been documented in the occupied West Bank since the beginning of 2015.

A recent report by Yesh Din, an Israeli human rights organisation, showed that more than 92.6 percent of complaints Palestinians lodge with the Israeli police go without charges being filed.
