Fortis takes the lead in giving CPR training to citizens

January 29, 2016 by Nasheman

The hospital has so far trained more than 11,000 persons in Bangalore in the emergency procedure that can help save the lives of hundreds of cardiac arrest patients

fortis

Bengaluru: With a majority of sudden cardiac deaths happening outside hospitals, knowing how to give CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) can make the difference between life and death during such an emergency. Fortis Hospitals, Bangalore has set out a mission to empower Bangaloreans in saving hearts by training them in CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) to reduce casualties, promote timely treatment, and be an effective first responder in a medical emergency.

On the Silver jubilee year of Fortis Cunningham Road, Fortis has initiated a unique programme to train lay people in Bangalore in CPR and as many as 11,000 Bengalureans have already received free training.

CPR is an emergency procedure performed in an effort to manually preserve brain function, restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who has suffered cardiac arrest. The main symptoms of cardiac arrest in an adult or a child are unconsciousness and breathlessness. The earlier the CPR is given, the greater the chances of their survival.

Knowledge of CPR is limited in our country, despite the fact that 65 per cent of cardiac emergencies occur at home. To support the cause, Fortis Hospitals started the ‘Fortis Heart Savers,’ a CSR initiative to disseminate information on heart emergencies and the CPR training is part of this campaign. Participants learn CPR techniques and get valuable information on heart health and cardiac emergencies, and this in turn has helped in creating responsible citizens.

“We are indeed glad to see an overwhelming response for our initiative on CPR training. Students, IT professionals, bankers, public servants and many others showed keen interest in the initiative. It is our privilege that we have been able to mend over two million hearts and this milestone has been possible because of the best medical team and management. The CPR training is our way of giving back to society,” said Dr. Manish Mattoo, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospitals, Cunningham Road.

The training programme witnessed active participation from people both young and old, across the city. Corporate and government offices, police commissioner’s office, CBI, colleges including Mount Carmel College, Christ, Jain college, RV college and IT firms including TCS were few of the participants in this initiative.

“The CPR training programme has evoked quite a positive response from people in different parts of the city. The life threatening situation could happen to anyone – our friends, relatives or even strangers. Though it sounds really simple, a CPR procedure has a definite set of rules and process to follow. Hence, practical training is required to understand the procedure thoroughly. We are elated that the objective of the campaign is met. This is just the beginning and we will continue to put in our best efforts to educate and impart knowledge to the public on such imperative health procedures,” said Dr. Vivek Jawali, Chairman, Department of Cardiovascular Sciences, Fortis Hospitals, Bengaluru.

3 Wipro employees arrested for hacking UK firm TalkTalk

January 29, 2016 by Nasheman

wipro

London: Three employees of a call centre run by Wipro for UK telecom firm TalkTalk have been arrested over security breach allegations, according to British media.

The Kolkata-based workers were arrested earlier this month following a data security review by the London-based firm, which then alerted Indian police.

The arrests came months after TalkTalk was hit by a high-profile hacking in October last year when personal details of its customers were compromised.
But the company has indicated that the latest arrests in India are not related to last year’s data breach.

“Following the October 2015 cyber-attack, we have been conducting a forensic review to ensure that all aspects of our security are as robust as possible including that of our suppliers. Acting on information supplied by TalkTalk, the local police have arrested three individuals who have breached our policies and the terms of our contract with Wipro. We are also reviewing our relationship with Wipro,” TalkTalk said in a statement.
“We are determined to identify and deal effectively with these issues and we will continue to devote significant resource to keeping our customers’ data safe,” the phone and broadband service provider added.

News of the arrests was first reported on Britain’s ‘Channel 4 News’ last evening.

It reported that Indian police had made the arrests over the last fortnight in relation to allegations of theft of customers’ data and using it to con them out of thousands of pounds.

“Wipro is committed to maintaining the integrity and confidentiality of all customer data and has a zero tolerance policy on security breaches,” Wipro said in a statement.
“Wipro is working closely with the customer in the investigation and will continue to extend its full cooperation to the investigating authorities. We are unable to comment on the matter that is currently under investigation,” it added.

India beat Australia in second T20I to seal series

January 29, 2016 by Nasheman

dhoni

Melbourne: India dominated with both bat and ball to beat Australia by 27 runs in the second Twenty20 International at the Melbourne Cricket Ground here on Friday.

India rode on half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to post 184/3 in their 20 overs. In reply, the Australians could only manage 157/8 despite being given a superb start by Aaron Finch.

The Indians have thus clinched the three-match series with an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (2/32) and young pacer Jasprit Bumrah (2/37) were the most successful among the Indian bowlers. Yuvraj Singh (1/7), Hardik Pandya (1/17) and Ravichandran Ashwin (1/27) also bagged a wicket each.

Chasing a challenging target, the hosts were off to a flying start with Finch going great guns. The Australian captain smashed 74 runs off 48 deliveries with eight boundaries and a couple of sixes. Shaun Marsh was going steady at the other end, scoring a run-a-ball 23.

The Australians were cruising comfortably along at 10 runs an over, but the fall of Marsh’s wicket in the 10th triggered a collapse.

Chris Lynn (2) and the dangerous Glenn Maxwell (1) were sent back by Hardik Pandya and Yuvraj Singh respectively as the Australians lost three wickets in as many overs which pegged back their momentum.

Finch and Shane Watson tried to re-build the innings, but Ravindra Jadeja sent back Watson in the 15th over with a stunning return catch off his own bowling.

Finch, who was struggling with a cramped hamstring, was run out in the next over as the Indians tightened their grip on the match.

Earlier, put in to bat by the hosts, India were provided a steady start by Rohit and Dhawan. The duo were a bit cautious in the first three overs before going after the Australian bowlers.

Rohit continued his superb form during the ongoing tour, scoring 60 runs off 47 balls with five boundaries and a six. He added 97 runs for the opening partnership along with Shikhar Dhawan (42).

Kohli walked in at the fall of Dhawan’s wicket and proceeded to build on the solid foundation provided by the openers by belting 59 runs in his 33-ball innings which included seven boundaries and a six.

Dhawan was also in excellent form, hitting three fours and two sixes during his 32-ball stay in the middle. He missed out on his maiden half-century in T20Is when a reverse sweep off Glenn Maxwell found Lynn at point.

For Australia, Maxwell had figures of 1/17 while debutant medium-pacer Andrew Tye captured the prized wicket of India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to return 1/28 in his four overs.

Rohit and Dhawan reserved special treatment for James Faulkner. Rohit hit the left-arm pacer for three boundaries in his very first over after replacing Shane Watson in the Australian attack. Dhawan then smashed a four and a six off consecutive balls in his very next over.

Dhawan’s departure did not affect the run rate as Kohli and Rohit continued to find the gaps at regular intervals. However, an unfortunate bit of mis-communication saw Rohit being run out while attempting to go for a second run.

Dhoni then gave Kohli good support from the other end with 14 runs off nine balls as the Delhi batsman signed off the Indian innings on a strong note.

Govt allots prime Mumbai plot to Hema Malini at Rs 35 per square metre

January 29, 2016 by Nasheman

hema-malini

Mumbai: Bollywood dreamgirl Hema Malini’s plans to start a dance academy on a plot of land in Mumbai’s Andheri area hit a roadblock on Thursday, as an RTI activist accused her of land-grabbing.

Exactly a month ago, the Maharashtra government had allotted a prime 2,000-square-metre plot to the Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha member in the suburban upmarket Oshiwara area for her proposed dance academy.

According to documents procured under the Right to Information (RTI) by activist Anil Galgali, Hema Malini was allotted the plot worth crores of rupees for a paltry Rs.70,000.

“Not only that, this is the second time Hema Malini has been allotted a prime plot in the Mumbai suburbs. Earlier, in 1997, the (then) Shiv Sena-BJP government had given her a plot of land, but she could not develop it due to CRZ (Coastal Regulation Zone) issues,” Galgali said.

He claimed that though Hema Malini has not yet returned the earlier plot, the current government has allotted her another plot.

Interestingly, Congress Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Shukla was allotted a plot in Andheri West, but following a controversy generated by then opposition BJP-Shiv Sena, he was forced to surrender it in February 2014 — just before the Lok Sabha elections.

The details of the allotment to Hema Malini from the Mumbai Suburban District Collectorate showed that she was given the land at only Rs.35 per square metre.

Moreover, she was allotted another plot of 1,741 square metres in the same locality in April 1997 for Rs.10 lakh, but since it fell partly under CRZ, she never developed it, nor did she raise 25 percent of the project cost, but continues to retain that plot, Galgali said.

In the new allotment, the Hema Malini Dance Academy’s cultural complex project is expected to cost around Rs.18.49 crore for which she is yet to submit proof of availability of 25 percent funds and resources to raise the balance 75 percent.

The RTI reply said the academy has only around Rs.3.5 crore; less than the 25 percent minimum requirement, and it was unclear about the balance 75 percent.

Galgali has shot off a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis pointing out the governement’s ‘benevolence’ to Hema Malini, and how it was flouting the state’s policy of taking back reserved land given to various organisations, but allotting a plot reserved for a garden to the BJP MP for her dance academy.

When Revenue Minister Eknath Khadse made the allotment on December 29, 2015, Hema had said how the matter had been buried in bureaucratic red tape for 20 years, but the new government expedited it in record time.

Sania and Martina win Aussie Open for third major trophy

January 29, 2016 by Nasheman

AP

AP

Melbourne: In a perfect climax to their stupendous run, Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis were today crowned the Australian Open women’s doubles champions after they tamed the spirited Czech duo of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in straight sets for their 36th win in a row, here.

The top seeds fought past the seventh seeds Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka 7-6 (1) 6-3 in the women’s doubles final that lasted one hour and 45 minutes.

It was their third consecutive Grand Slam title for Sania and Martina, having won the Wimbledon and US Open in the 2015 season.

In an incredible feat, Sania and Martina have now extended their unbeaten run to 36 matches, winning eight titles in a row. They won five straight titles in 2015, starting from the US Open and before the Australian Open now.

It was Sania’s second title at the Australian Open, having won the mixed doubles in 2009 with Mahesh Bhupathi.

The final though was not a stroll in the park for the world number one team with the Czechs putting up a great fight in the opening set. The match was littered with breaks with the two teams struggling to hold serve throughout.

Hlavackova was excellent from the baseline and Hradecka was terrific at the net, playing some breathtaking shots and winners.

The top seeds though had enough resources in their kitty to blunt the challenge of the Czech girls.

“I would like to thank everyone for coming out and supporting us. For me Australian Open is special, it’s like home. I have special memories here. We had an incredible one year. Martina is an amazing champion and an amazing person, so it is a privilege for me to play with her,” Sania said.

“We know how good you are (Czech team). We lost to you at Roland Garros. Hopefully we will have more finals to fight for,” Sania said.

Martina was equally effusive in her praise for the Czechs.

“They pushed us to the limit. It was s tough tournament. We will try to defend our title next year.”

In the opening set, the two pairs could manage to hold serve only twice each as it was full of breaks.

Hradecka ran frantically to her left from the net and smashed one volley past Sania off Martina’s return and then the Swiss served two consecutive double faults to hand the Czechs an early break.

The top seeds had three break chances in the next game — the fourth — on Hlavackova’s serve but the Czech team saved all.

Martina earned a fourth at deuce with a volley and converted that with a forehand passing winner.

A double fault by Sania at 30-40 gave the break back to the Czech players, who were now leading 3-2.

Hradecka sent a forehand long to give the top seeds a breakpoint and netted a backhand to make it 3-3.

There was no end to breaks with Martina dropping her serve next. Hlavackova’s unreachable backhand lob gave the Czechs a breakpoint and the Swiss sent a forehand wide.

Hlavackova’s long forehand at 30-40 meant that Sania and Martina had a break chance but Martina’s return just landed wide and it was deuce.

The top seeds though made it 4-4 with Hlavackova’s consecutive forehand errors from the baseline.

Sania went down 0-40 in the next game but saved all three break chances. A forehand to net by Sania at deuce point and the top seeds were facing another break chance but managed to saved that.

Another break chance and this time the Czechs converted to lead 5-4.

The seventh seeds came out to serve out the set but were broken.

Martina finally held her serve in the 11th game and the top seeds led 6-5, this time not allowing the Czechs to convert break opportunities.

Eventually the Czecks too held and it boiled down to a tiebreak in which the top seeds trampled their opponents, losing just one point, to pocket the opening set.

They broke Hradecka in the very first game of the second set and never looked back after that. Though Martina was broken in the sixth game but the favourites broke back for a 5-2 lead.

There was more drama as Martina was broken in the eight while serving for the match and they squandered three match points in the ninth game on Hradecka’s serve.

Sania and Martina finally closed the championship in their favour on the fourth chance.
