Sourav Ganguly, Former Captain, Indian Cricket Team and icon player for KKR in the inaugural season of IPL speaking exclusively on the Star Sports Network, the official broadcaster of VIVO IPL has put his faith on Robin Uthappa as a prime captaincy contender for the top job at the Kolkata based franchise.

Here is sneak peak of what the fans can expect on Sunday:

Fans will be able to watch the entire episode of Knight Club featuring Sourav Ganguly and KKR assistant coach Simon Katich as they talk about the qualities they are seeking in KKR’s next captain on Sunday February 25, 2018 on Star Sports Hindi 1, Star Sports Hindi HD 1 and Star Sports First at 10 pm along with the announcement on Sunday, March 04, 2018 at 9 am.

Speaking exclusively on the Knight Club show on Star Sports the former KKR and India captain Sourav Ganguly said, “It is important for KKR to entrust their new captain with the kind of faith and stability they showed in Gautam Gambhir. When I look at the current KKR squad, I feel Robin Uthappa is the best player to lead the team. Though, the team has experienced campaigners in Dinesh Karthik and Chris Lynn but Uthappa has been with the team for over 4 years now and he’s had considerable experience in dealing with the dynamics of the side, not to mention that he’s a fan favourite as well. An aggressive batsman himself, he will be the right successor to the legacy that KKR has come to build over the last decade.”

Kolkata Knight Riders will also offer their fans to nominate their choices for the captain via fan poll starting tomorrow on their website before Star Sports and KKR answer one question on everybody’s minds ‘KKR ka Captain Kaun?’ on March 04, 2018.

Speaking on the qualities KKR is seeking in their next captain, KKR Assistant Coach Simon Katich said, “While on-field characteristics play an important role, we are also looking at someone who can be a big part of the camp off the field. It is important how the captain goes around and creates a friendly atmosphere in the camp by not always talking cricket and also getting to know the players and their characteristics.”

The 11th edition of VIVO IPL starts on Saturday, April 07, 2018 with defending champions Mumbai Indians hosting two-time winners Chennai Super Kings.

Kolkata Knight Riders will begin their VIVO IPL 2018 journey at Eden Gardens against Virat Kohli led Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday, April 08, 2018.

Welcome To New York Is A Funny Take Off On Bollywood Film Industry & IIFAA Awards

February 24, 2018 by Shaheen Raaj

Banner: Wiz Films Company
Producer: Vashu Baghnani, Jacky Bhagnani, Deepshikha Deshmukh, Andre Timmins, Viraf Sarkari & Sabbas Joseph
Director: Chakri Toletti
Star Cast: Diljit Dosanjh, Sonakshi Sinha, Ritiesh Deshmukh, Lara Dutta, Rana Daggubati, Sushant Singh Rajput, Karan Johar, Aditya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani, Tapsee Pannu, Kriti Sanon, Shahid Kapoor, Tiger Shroff, Priety Zinta, Neha Dhupia, Suniel Shetty, Boman Irani, Mohit Sinha & above all Katrina Kaif & Salman Khan
Music: Sajid – Wajid, Meet Bros & Shamir Tandon

Welcome To New York, directed by Chakri Toleti & produced by Vashu Bhagnani’s Puja Films releases this week along with Luv Ranjan’s Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. Welcome To New York stars Sonakshi Sinha, Diljit Dosanjh & Karan Johar in pivotal roles and has an entire entourage of Bollywood A – listers making cameos as it is based against the backdrop of IIFA Awards. The film is meant to be a satire on the Hindi film industry & the 2 leads Diljit Dosanjh & Sonakshi play underdogs who make it big in Bollywood, despite coming from a humble background.

The movie is about a sloppy recovery agent Teji (Diljit Dosanjh) who dreams of being an actor & a “dhinchaak designer” Jinal (Sonakshi Sinha) who wants to escape from her dreary life. They win a
contest and are selected to showcase their talent at the IIFA Awards by Sophie (Lara Dutta) who is a part of the organizing team spear headed by Gary (Boman Irani). Sophie purposely selects the “two losers” Teji & Jinal in order to settle scores with Gary, who refuses her partnership in the company.

The entire film is supposed to be a comedy of errors with both Teji & Jinal winning Bollywood fraternity’s hearts with their genuine talent. What it turns out to be is a whole lot of different story. In between all this is the main celebrity host of the show Karan Johar, who has his own set of issues with the organizer Gary. But at the same time, Karan is also under threat of being kidnapped by his lookalike New York based gangster Arjun (Karan Johar) who wants to punish him for making romantic films. Riteish Deshmukh, who is the co – host of the show, uses this situation to his own selfish benefit. In between all this chaos behind the scene, IIFA awards take place in New York.

Karan Johar, in his double role as Karan (the director & head honcho of Dharma Productions) & Arjun (the gangster) manages to keep the movie engaging. There is a lot of self – referencing & self deprecative humor (be it about his sexual orientation or his movies) which does makes you laugh at quite a few places. Diljit Dosanjh as the goofy Teji Singh is adorable. His comic timing is impeccable. Sonakshi Sinha is lost throughout the film and is not very convincing. Even a dream sequence with Salman Khan does nothing to the character that is weak. Boman Irani as the stressed out, snarky stooge managing the event looks solely disoriented as he flits listlessly around from frame to frame. Lara Dutta tries to save the film as she does her part in whatever little scope she has been offered. Salman Khan, Sushant Singh Rajput, Katrina Kaif, Aditya Roy Kapur & Riteish Deshmukh’s cameos look forced & out of sync.
The 1st ever half of the film manages to keep one engaged because the writers Dheeraj Rattan & Sara Bodinar create some interest in the lead characters after they land in New York and there is a certain curiosity about who Karan’s doppelganger is and why he wants to harm the Dharma Productions’ head honcho so badly.

Director Chakri Toleti’s comedy of errors goes wrong especially in the 2nd half because the whole plot of the film goes out of the window, due to the lack of a proper script.

Editor Ritesh Soni has kept the film at 2 hours & 5 minutes instead of making it even more long & exhaustive. The film’s music is forgettable except for the last dance number “Pant Mai Gun”. Cinematographers Neha Parti Matiyani & Santosh Thundiyil do an average job.

Tail Piece: On the whole, Welcome To New York comes across as a blatant endorsement of IIFA Awards with a handful of funny gags thrown in here & there. The impeccable comic timing of Diljit Dosanjh & Karan Johar’s funny take on himself & the industry act as the saving grace. You can safely skip this Movie.

At the Box – Office turnstiles, the movie will have a very limited scope.

‘Survive or die together’: More than 400 killed in Eastern Ghouta

February 23, 2018 by Nasheman

by Linah Alsaafin & Zouhir Al Shimale, Al Jazeera

More than 400 people have been killed in Eastern Ghouta, a monitoring group said, as the Syrian government forces backed by Russian warplanes continued their aerial bombardment of the rebel-held area.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Thursday that at least 403 people were killed in the “hysterical attack” that began on Sunday, including 150 children. Almost 2,120 others were wounded.

UN special envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire in comments made ahead of Thursday’s UN Security Council meeting.

“The humanitarian situation in Eastern Ghouta is appalling and, therefore, we need a ceasefire that stops both the horrific heavy bombardment of Eastern Ghouta and the indiscriminate mortar shelling on Damascus,” he said.

He added the ceasefire needs to be followed by immediate unhindered humanitarian access and a facilitated evacuation of wounded people out of Eastern Ghouta, and warned against this being a repeat of Aleppo.

Living under bombardment
Residents of Eastern Ghouta, majority of whom are internally displaced, say there is nothing they can do and nowhere to hide.

Rafat al-Abram lives in Douma and is a car mechanic. The air attacks over the last few days have disrupted his job as the street he works on was destroyed by two raids.

“I managed to get some of my tools and equipment out, and fix cars whenever I can,” he told Al Jazeera.

“Sometimes I also fix the ambulances of the civil defence, which break down often because of their constant usage.”

His wife and two teenage daughters, Khadija, 17, and Ola, 15, remain at home. They start their day by sitting together before Abram visits his neighbours to get the latest grim news.

“Sometimes a bombing takes place near where I am working, which means I have to stop and hurry to help the civil defence pull victims from the rubble,” he said.

After Abram returns back home, he said he is haunted by the unbearable scenes he witnessed during the day.

“Seeing a father or mother wailing and crying over their dead children, or a father carrying his son who has one leg amputated, or another screaming at God and then at people to help save his family who are all lying under the rubble of a building … I try to comfort them even though I want to sit and cry with them from the horror of what is happening all around us,” he said.

‘Survive or die together’
The rebel-controlled Eastern Ghouta, a mostly rural area on the outskirts of the capital Damascus, has been under government siege since 2013. About 400,000 Syrians live there. The siege has resulted in a huge inflation of basic foodstuffs with a bag of bread costing the equivalent of $5.

Malnutrition rates have reached unprecedented levels, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, with 11.9 percent of children under the age of five acutely malnourished.

Only one aid convoy was permitted inside the area in February, to the town of Nashabieh, but none were allowed in January and December.

Nisma al-Hatri told Al Jazeera her husband and 10-year-old daughter Sara wake up to the sound of warplanes.

“Every day goes like this: bombings, then I clean the house from the effect of the nearby shelling, then we hide in one room, attempting to survive or die together,” Hatri said.

“My daughter Sara and I wake up with our arms around each other from the night before,” Hatmi continued. “We all sleep on one mattress. She hugs me and asks me why she can’t go out to play, or to school or to see her friends. I cannot answer her.”

The 32-year-old used to be a teacher but schools were shut down a month earlier because the situation grew too dangerous to go outside. Nevertheless, Hatmi still gives lessons to Sara and other neighbourhood children on an almost daily basis.

Her husband goes out every morning for several hours and returns with barley, which Hatmi cooks with rice for their breakfast and dinner. Some days her husband returns empty-handed.

‘War against civilians’
Mahmood Adam, a member of the Syrian Civil Defence, described to Al Jazeera the reality of Eastern Ghouta as “disastrous”.

“We are talking about a systematic targeting of civilians in their homes, schools, medical centres, marketplaces, and civil defence sites,” he said. “This is an extermination of the society in this area.”

“There are families who have been hiding in basements and underground shelters who haven’t seen the sun in days for fear of the brutality of the regime and the Russian warplanes,” he continued.

“We don’t know whether we will be alive to tell the world what is happening in the next hour or day. The rocket launchers are relentless, and the warplanes have not left the skies of Eastern Ghouta since Sunday.

“Everyone here knows this is a slaughter and a crime against humanity,” he added. “This is a war against civilians.”

Targeting medical centres
Speaking from the Turkish border city Gaziantep, Al Jazeera’s Osama Bin Javaid said doctors in Eastern Ghouta are saying the circumstances are “beyond words”.

“What they see is body after body arriving in makeshift clinics,” Bin Javaid said. “[They are] trying to give medical aid to the people who are in their hundreds being wounded in a relentless barrage of rockets, shells, and air strikes.

“They are running out of medical assistance and places to put these people because at least 22 facilities, according the Syrian American Medical Society, have been targeted since Sunday,” he said.

Ahmed al-Masri, spokesman for the Union of Free Syrian Doctors, told Al Jazeera government forces are targeting “every aspect of civilian life”.

“The regime’s forces are using the most ferocious means of bombardment,” he said. “As a result, many of the hospitals and medical facilities in Eastern Ghouta were directly targeted and destroyed.

“Three of our medical centres were shelled and destroyed and one of our crews was killed and three others wounded.”

No consensus on ceasefire
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council failed to reach an agreement on a resolution put forward by Sweden and Kuwait that called for a 30-day cessation of hostilities to allow the delivery of aid and evacuation of civilians from besieged Eastern Ghouta.

Russian UN ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said there was “no agreement” and presented amendments to the draft resolution “for it to be realistic”. He also accused the Syrian civil defence, also known as the White Helmets, of being “closely affiliated with terrorist groups”.

The Syrian UN Ambassador Basher al-Jaafari accused the United Nations and mainstream media of backing “terrorists recruited by the US from all over the world” to fight in Syria.

Al Jazeera’s diplomatic correspondent James Bays said Jaafari’s comments were typical of a man who has “stoutly defended his government and whatever it does”.

“He is representing a government that is breaching international law – effectively many would say carrying out war crimes,” Bays said, speaking from the UN headquarters in New York.

“He’s very much supported diplomatically by Russia. They helped the Syrian government turn the tide of the war in the last two years and they are now helping do whatever it takes to win the war.”

India aim for perfect tour finale in 3rd T20I

February 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Cape Town: India would be eyeing a perfect end to what has been a thoroughly roller-coaster tour when they take on a depleted but not completely deflated South Africa in the decisive third Twenty20 International here tomorrow.

Having suffered a minor setback in the previous game, India will look to recover and close out this eight-week long tour with a series’ win.

The three-match series is level at 1-1 after the Men in Blue won the first T20I in Johannesburg by 28 runs. The Proteas bounced back in Centurion with a six-wicket win.

India have never played T20 cricket at Newlands. This will be their first such outing, while South Africa have a less than impressive record here. They have played 8 T20Is, and lost 5 of them here.

The two wins came in the 2007 World T20 and as such the hosts have only ever won a singular bilateral T20I game (against England in 2016) at Cape Town.

It doesn’t necessarily give the visitors an advantage. Through this limited-overs’ leg, South Africa have shown that they are more comfortable in the T20 setting, having won the rain-truncated Pink ODI as well as coming close while chasing 204 in the first match of this series, both at Wanderers.

Victory in the previous game will also be a reason for buoyancy in the Proteas’ dressing room. Stand-in skipper JP Duminy was adamant that they had well-set plans for Indian batsmen and bowlers since the start of this series but just needed proper execution as was showcased at Supersport Park.

It was seen in how the hosts made pointed changes in their bowling plans, and then took the attack to India s bowlers.

Duminy had named an unchanged eleven in the previous game, and it remains to be seen if they will bother breaking away from this consistency in the series-decider.

Jon-Jon Smuts hasn’t come good yet despite his big-hitting prowess, while David Miller’s poor form has spilled over from the ODIs. He was persisted with throughout that series, so there is no reason to doubt that the Proteas’ team management will back him to come good at a crucial juncture.

Jasprit Bumrah’s abdominal strain had forced India to make a change, but they will consider a couple spots for this finale. Bumrah’s fitness still remains a question mark.

Will the team management risk playing him given the shortened time-frame of this match? The fact that there is a two-week gap before the tri-series begins in Sri Lanka might coerce them into this gamble.

The bowling combination is the other concern. India have shown a propensity to field a left-arm pacer in this format, but Jaydev Unadkat has proven expensive so far.

He has picked up two wickets for 75 runs at an economy of 9.78. Yuzvendra Chahal has also been hammered (one wicket for 103 runs in 8 overs at economy 12.87) and Heinrich Klaasen eager to face him once again.

Given the scenario, Virat Kohli might just be inspired to change the look and shape of his bowling attack.

If Bumrah does play, Unadkat is likely to make way for him. Shardul Thakuar used clever change of pace at Centurion and picked 1/31 in his four-over spell.

The Newlands pitch had played slow during the ODI series, and citing the example of Supersport Park, there is every reason to expect another wicket on the slower side, if not dual-paced altogether.

Arguably, Chahal bowls a more consistent line than Kuldeep Yadav and this explains latter’s omission from the first two games.

However, with Chahal’s confidence hitting a bit low, Yadav could find himself in reckoning for this all-important game. Further, given South Africa’s frailty against change of pace, India might even be tempted to consider Axar Patel, thus increasing the onus on Hardik Pandya as the third-choice pacer.

India’s tour had gained momentum with victory in the Wanderers’ Test and then they carried it through the ODI series, romping home with a 5-1 margin.

The team management usually clubs all formats together and is celebrating ascendancy over South Africa since the last week of January. As such, they will be keen to fly out with an additional trophy to show for this run of form.

Teams (from):

India: Virat Kohli (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Manish Pandey, Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni (wk), Hardik Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Jaydev Unadkat, Shardul Thakur.

South Africa: JP Duminy (capt), Farhaan Behardien, Junior Dala, Reeza Hendricks, Christiaan Jonker, Heinrich Klaasen (wk), David Miller, Chris Morris, Dane Paterson, Aaron Phangiso, Andile Phehlukwayo, Tabraiz Shamsi, Jon-Jon Smuts.

BJP wants Popular Front of India banned in Karnataka, CM Siddaramaiah says no

February 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah Thursday ruled out banning any organisation such as Popular Front of India in the state.

“The question of banning any organisation (including PFI) doesn’t arise yet,” he told reporters here.

The chief minister was replying to a query whether the government intends to follow the footsteps of BJP-led Jharkhand government which banned PFI for “spreading anarchy” in the state.

The BJP state unit has been demanding a ban on the outfit, blaming it for the killings of Hindu and party activists in the state.

It has also alleged that the Congress was going soft on PFI to “appease” the minorities.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President G Parameshwara had earlier in the day countered BJP saying an organisation cannot be banned on mere demand, but the home minister can decide on it after reviewing the situation.

“Be it a demand of the Congress or BJP, government cannot ban based on a demand. The home minister reviews the situation time to time and will take a call,” he said.

‘Wrong to blame Congress’ – KPCC distances itself from Nalapad controversy

February 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: The Congress on Thursday avoided itself from the whole episode of assault by Shantinagar legislator NA Haris’ son Mohammed Nalapad Haris on a youth.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president G Parameshwara said it was wrong to hold the party responsible for acts carried out by individual members.

Speaking to the reporters, G Parameshwar said “The Congress Party is being accused for the act done by a member. How can the party be responsible for all this? It is very embarrassing”

While the Haris episode was raging, a video showing Congress K R Puram block functionary S Narayanaswamy splashing petrol inside a BBMP office and threatening to burn down the office went viral.

Parameshwar also said that Haris’s son has been expelled and Narayanaswamy is suspended from the party. Further, any members indulging in such acts will not be tolerated, he added.

Haris is a second-time MLA from Shantinagar constituency in Bengaluru. The case involving Haris’s son and Haris getting the ticket are two different things. If Haris comes out of consultancy from the observers, he will get a ticket, Parameshwar said.

February 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Mumbai, New Delhi: The ED today said it has frozen bank deposits and shares worth about Rs 44 crore of the Nirav Modi group and seized a huge collection of imported watches from locations linked to the billionaire diamantaire.

Officials said they have put freeze orders on bank accounts containing Rs 30 crore and shares worth Rs 13.86 crore of the group under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

A huge collection of imported watches, 176 steel almirahs, 158 boxes and 60 other containers have been seized during ED searches at multiple locations linked to the billionaire diamond jewelry designer over last week, they said.

Only yesterday, the agency seized deposits, shares and luxury cars worth over Rs 100 crore of the businessman and his group.

Modi, his uncle and Gitanjali Gems promoter Mehul Choksi and others are being investigated by the ED and other probe agencies after it recently came to light, following a complaint by the PNB, that they allegedly cheated the nationalised bank to the tune of Rs 11,400 crore, with the purported involvement of a few employees of the bank.

The CBI and the ED have registered two FIRs each to probe the case. Both Modi and Choski are said to have left the country before criminal cases were lodged against them.

Palakkad: Locals click selfies while mentally unstable man tied, beaten to death

February 23, 2018 by Nasheman

Palakkad: A 35-year-old tribal man was beaten to death by the locals for allegedly stealing articles from some shops at Agali in Palakkad, Kerela, police said.

The deceased, suspected to be mentally unsound, was identified as Madhu, hailing from Kadukumanna settlement of Attappady, one of the largest and backward tribal hamlets in the state.

The shabbily dressed man, who was living in the forest near Mukkali for some months, used to be seen wandering in the area, police said. He was beaten up by the local people, who accused him of stealing articles from some shops in the town, and later handed him over to the police on Thursday.

Some television channels aired visuals purportedly showing people taking selfies with Madhu with his hands tied up. Though, the police tried to rush him to the nearby Agali government hospital, he vomited, collapsed and died in the jeep itself and was declared by dead by the hospital, police said.

Agali police has registered a case and some persons have been taken into custody, they said.

“They are being interrogated and the arrest will be recorded after verification,” a senior police officer told news agency PTI.

Police said the post mortem would be conducted at the Thrissur Medical College hospital later, only after which the exact cause of the death will be known. However, Madhu’s relatives told Malayalam channels that he was suffering from a mental breakdown and was staying away from home for some months. They also wanted exemplary punishment to the guilty.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condemned the incident and said stringent action would be taken against the accused. Directions in this regard have been given to the director general of police, he said. “Such violence cannot be accepted in a civilised society. It cannot be accepted in anyway,” Vijayan said in a Facebook post.

The Thursday’s incident is the third mob attack reported in Kerala in the past few weeks.

Earlier in February, a transgender was harassed and stripped by a mob in Thiruvananthapuram.

In January, a mentally unstable woman was beaten and tortured by three women in front of a crowd in Pallipuram. Her feet were burnt with an iron ladle. When a mobile video of the assault was circulated on social media, the police filed a case against the women.
