Funerals begin for Palestinians killed by Israel army on Land Day

March 31, 2018 by Nasheman

Palestinians mourn 17 killed by Israeli forces in Gaza during Land Day march calling for return of Palestinian refugees.

Funerals have begun for the 17 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces as thousands marched near Gaza’s border with Israel to mark the 42nd anniversary of Land Day.

Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip held the funeral for 30-year-old Sari Abu Odeh late on Friday.

He was shot dead earlier in the day after Israeli forces fired live ammunition at protesters and used tear gas to push them back from a heavily fortified fence as they began a planned six-week demonstration demanding the right of return for refugees.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, more than 1,400 others were wounded at the demonstration which commemorated Land Day, which stems from March 30, 1976, when six unarmed Palestinian citizens of Israel were killed by Israeli forces during protests against the Israeli government’s decision to expropriate massive tracts of Palestinian-owned land.

Mohammed Najjar, 25, was shot in the stomach during a clash east of Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip, while Mahmoud Muammar, 38, and Mohammed Abu Omar, 22, were both shot dead in Rafah.

Among the other victims were Ahmed Odeh, 19, Jihad Freneh, 33, Mahmoud Saadi Rahmi, 33, Abdelfattah Abdelnabi, 22, Ibrahim Abu Shaar, 20, Abdelqader al-Hawajiri, Sari Abu Odeh, Hamdan Abu Amsheh, Jihad Abu Jamous, Bader al-Sabbagh and Naji Abu Hjair, whose ages remain unknown.

Earlier on Friday, Omar Waheed Abu Samour, a farmer from Gaza, was also killed by Israeli artillery fire while standing in his land near Khan Younis, just hours before the demonstrations.

Funerals for the rest of those killed are set to take place throughout the day on Saturday.

In honour of those killed, the Palestinian Authority declared Saturday a day of “national mourning”.

“Schools, universities, as well as all government institutions, across the country will be off on Saturday, as per President Mahmoud Abbas’ decision to declare a day of national mourning for the souls of the martyrs,” a statement issued on Friday said.

Adalah, a legal centre for Palestinian rights in Israel, condemned the Israeli army’s use of force, calling it a “brutal violation” of international law.

“Live gunfire on unarmed civilians constitutes a brutal violation of the international legal obligation to distinguish between civilians and combatants,” the group said in a statement.

It also said that it would launch an investigation to “demand that those found responsible for the killings be brought to justice”.

WATCH: Land Day – Palestinians protesting the expropriation of their land (2:40)
Yara Mahamid, a student from Gaza told Al Jazeera, that Israeli aggression wouldn’t deter Palestinians from protesting.

“We came to commemorate Land Day because we have to confront the [Israeli] state.

“We came out to remember our martyrs and to reclaim ownership of our land. We will resist until our last breath. We shouldn’t negotiate anymore. We shouldn’t give up our rights,” she said.

This year’s Land Day comes on the heels of months of anger over US President Donald Trump’s decision to move the American embassy to Jerusalem.

It is widely expected the US will be transferring its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in the run-up to the Nakba, “day of catastrophe”, on May 15, when Israel was officially declared a state and more than 750,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homes.

Chabahar port not rival project of CPEC: Iran’s ex-Foreign Minister

March 31, 2018 by Nasheman

Former Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi has said that the perception in Pakistan that Iran’s Chabahar Port project, that connects India to Afghanistan, Central Asia and Eastern Europe, is a “rival project of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)”, is not correct.

“The Chabahar Port project is aimed at connecting Iran with Central Asia, and the ultimate goal is to uplift the Iranian economy,” Kharazi said at an event here. The project was under deliberation for a long time, therefore, it was not correct to link its launch with that of the CPEC, he was cited as saying by Dawn online on Saturday.

India, Iran and Afghanistan signed a trilateral agreement in 2016 to jointly develop the Chabahar Port, opening a new strategic transit route between the three nations and other Central Asian nations, bypassing Pakistan.

On the other hand, the CPEC connects China’s Kashgar in Xinjiang province with Pakistan’s Gwadar port in Balochistan through a network of roads, railways and highways.

India strongly objects to the route of the CPEC corridor, which goes through Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Kharazi, Iran’s Foreign Minister from 1997 to 2005, said that though it was true that India had massively invested in the Chabahar project, it was an open platform for all regional countries to participate in.

“While we are engaging with India on the economic front and India is investing in Chabahar, we have not given exclusive rights on the project to them,” he said.

Talking about the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan, Kharazi said that Iran had “urged India a number of times to resolve the dispute in a peaceful and justly manner” and that Tehran was even willing to mediate between the two sides.

“But if we talk about economic partnerships, then Pakistan also has relations with the US which has put a number of sanctions on us, but (Iran) doesn’t mind it,” he said.

He pointed out that bilateral trade between Iran and Pakistan suffered over reluctance of Pakistani banks to do business with Iranian entities due to a fear of US sanctions.

Kharazi said that another issue that had negatively impacted the bilateral trade was the “lack of political will from Pakistani side due to intense pressure from Washington and middle-eastern countries”.

Dalai Lama embraces trooper who escorted him in 1959

March 31, 2018 by Nasheman

Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama got emotional on Saturday as he embraced one of the five Assam Rifles troopers, Naren Chandra Das, who escorted him in India after his escape from Tibet.

In 1959, as a young trooper Das, now 80, escorted the Dalai Lama, now 82, on his arrival in Arunachal Pradesh. Dalai Lama has lived in exile ever since fleeing Tibet in March 1959.

“I feel blessed once again as His Holiness touched me and bumped his head with my head,” Das told reporters after he was honoured by the leader at an event in Dharamsala to mark the 60th anniversary of the Dalai Lama’s arrival in India.

Das said he was overwhelmed by the gesture of His Holiness for inviting him. The event marked the onset of a year-long ‘Thank You India’ campaign.

Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma, Members of Parliament Shanta Kumar and Satyavrat Chaturvedi were also present in the event along with functionalities of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), comprising its President Lobsang Sangay.

In 2017, Das was reunited with the Dalai Lama for the first time in 58 years at a festival organised by the Assam government.

Das, who joined the force in 1957, said he was told to escort the Dalai Lama along with others. “We were directed only to escort the Dalai Lama and not to speak with him,” said Das.

He was then posted at Lungla near the China border after having completed his training at Tawang in the then North East Frontier Agency, now Arunachal Pradesh, he said.

The Dalai Lama has lived in India since fleeing China in 1959 after a failed uprising against Communist rule in Tibet.

CBI registers PE against Chanda Kochhar’s husband in ICICI loan case

March 31, 2018 by Nasheman

The CBI has registered a preliminary enquiry against Deepak Kochhar, husband of ICICI bank MD and CEO Chanda Kochhar, officials of the Videocon group and others to determine whether any wrongdoing was involved in the sanctioning of a Rs 3,250 crore loan to the Videocon Group by the ICICI Bank Ltd as part of a consortium of banks in 2012.

CBI sources said that Chanda Kochhar, against whom conflict of interest questions have been raised, has not been named in the PE as of now.

They said that Deepak Kochhar will soon be called for questioning along with some bank officials. These officials are also likely to include from the banks which were part of the consortium that lent money to the Videocon group.

The CBI action comes in the wake of the news reports raising questions about Videocon Chairman Venugopal Dhoot allegedly providing crores of rupees to a firm promoted by Deepak Kochhar and two relatives six months after his group got the Rs 3,250 crore loan from ICICI Bank.

The said amount was part of a loan of RS 40,000 crores which Videocon received from a consortium of 20 banks led by State Bank of India (SBI).

A PE is conducted to determine if there is enough evidence of wrongdoing for a case to be taken up for detailed investigation. If sufficient evidence suggests that a cognizable offence has been committed, then the PE is converted into a regular case or First Information Report (FIR).

The source said that the agency has collected documents related to the loan given to Videocon group in 2012.

Case Filed Against Rahul Gandhi For Remarks Against Modi

March 31, 2018 by Nasheman

The BJP spokesperson filed the complaint at the Deoria district fast track court under IPC sections 499 and 500 (defamation).
BJP leader Shalabh Mani Tripathi today filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Congress party’s national conclave in New Delhi recently.

The BJP spokesperson filed the complaint at the Deoria district fast track court under IPC sections 499 and 500 (defamation).

Tripathi’s counsel said April 5 has been fixed as the date of hearing of the case.

When contacted, Tripathi said, “During the Congress party national conclave in Delhi, Rahul Gandhi tried to draw similarities between PM Modi, Nirav Modi (tainted diamond businessman) and Lalit Modi (former IPL commissioner).”

“He also said the name Modi had become synonymous to corruption. This remark has hurt the sentiments of BJP party workers and countrymen and for this reason I have filed a defamation case against him in Deoria court today,” he said.

Reacting to the development, the Congress party said it would keep raising voice against government’s policies and its “failure” to check corruption.

“It is our duty to raise issues related to the people of the country and we will continue to do so,” said Congress district general secretary Anwar Hussain. “We are ready to face court cases and even jail for country.”

During three-day Congress national conclave in Delhi on March 16,17 and 18, Congress president Rahul Gandhi attacked PM Modi and compared him with Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi, both accused of fleeing the country after massive fraud.

CBI charge sheet confirms Peter Mukerjea’s role, property was a motive

March 31, 2018 by Nasheman

A supplementary charge sheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday asserted that former media baron Peter Mukerjea was indeed aware of the murder of Sheena Bora. The report also confirmed property angle in the 2012 murder case. Arguments on framing of charge are set to begin on Saturday.

Rahul Mukerjea, Peter Mukerjea, Indrani Mukerjea and Sheena Bora. Rahul Mukerjea, Peter Mukerjea, Indrani Mukerjea and Sheena Bora.
CBI has asserted that though “Peter was not in India when the murder took place, he was part of the conspiracy.” The charge sheet, third in the case, also said that the investigation has thrown up evidence that “Indrani was in touch with him while she was doing the recce of the place to dispose of her body, and after the disposal of Sheena’s body,on Friday.

Sheena Bora chargesheet: Indrani had kept Peter in loop in process of disposing of the body; Peter was aware of the conspiracy

The charge sheet also asserts that unlike what Peter has been stating, he was against the relationship between his son Rahul and Sheena citing an email conversation between the accused and Rahul.

The charge sheet also throws light on how Sheena and Rahul were separated by Indrani and how Indrani brought Sheena to Mumbai under the pretext of financial assistance, TimesNow said on Friday. “The charge sheet gives details of the relationship between Indrani and Sheena citing few email and SMS exchanges between the two,” it said.

The charge sheet for the first time also confirms property angle in the murder. “It has brought out in the open details of financial transactions, and wills of Ridhie and Sheena Bora that were not raised by Indrani,” the news channel said. Moder details on the evidence are expected to surface when the case goes on trial.

Sheena (24) was strangled in a car in Mumbai on April 2012 allegedly by her mother Indrani Mukerjea, Indrani’s former husband Sanjeev Khanna and her former driver Shyamvar Rai. Sheena’s body was then dumped in a forest in neighbouring Raigad district.

There had been two charge sheets filed in the case so far. According to the first charge sheet filed on 19 November last year, the CBI had named Indrani, Khanna, and Rai as accused in the case. The trio was arrested in August last year after Rai spilled the beans while he was being interrogated in a case pertaining to illegal possession of arms.

Rai later turned approver in the case. According to investigators, Sheena’s relationship with Rahul, son of Indrani’s current husband and former media baron Peter Mukerjea, was the possible motive behind her murder apart from certain financial dealings. The second charge sheet was filed on 16 February against Peter for his alleged role in the murder plot. He was arrested on 19 November last year.

The agency had stated Sheena was killed as her relationship with Rahul was disapproved by Peter and Indrani both of whom were part of the plot to murder her. However, Peter had denied the allegations. He had cited his emails to prove that he was never against the relationship.

The investigation agency had informed the Bombay High Court of the charge sheet on 17 October. The trial on the case is expected to begin in the first week of December. The high court had given the CBI one month’s time (November) to comply with formalities

Indian Journalist Arrested for Posting Fake News On Muslim Attack

March 31, 2018 by Nasheman

Mahesh Vikram Hegde’s online Postcard news reported on March 18 that Jain monk Upadhyaya Mayank Sagarji was attacked by Muslims. Police said Sagarji was actually injured in a road accident.

Indian police have arrested the editor of a website for publishing a fake report that Muslims had attacked a monk from the Jain faith, officials said on Friday.

Mahesh Vikram Hegde was arrested in southern Karnataka state on Thursday on charges of spreading fake and communally sensitive news on his right wing website, a senior police officer said.

Hegde’s online Postcard news reported on March 18 that Jain monk Upadhyaya Mayank Sagarji was attacked by Muslims. Police said Sagarji was actually injured in a road accident.

“We have arrested Hegde for posting a fake news on his news portal Postcard alleging that a Jain monk was attacked by Muslims,” Bangalore joint commissioner of police N. Satish Kumar said in a statement.

The cyber crime police “have registered a case against the portal and its owner Hegde for the false news”, Kumar added.

Hegde also shared the “news” on Twitter where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one of his more than 78,000 followers.

The news item and tweet were later deleted, police said.

Postcard news is a controversial website which usually carries stories that glorify Modi and his right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party.

One story on the site details the heroism of an Indian soldier “who single-handedly killed 300 Chinese soldiers”.

Another talks about how India would reduce nuclear China and Pakistan into “crumbling ruins” if it is faced with a “two-front war”.

India has seen a proliferation of fake news as more and more people in the country of 1.2 billion turn away from traditional media to internet items on smart phones.

False stories peddled as news led to seven people being killed by a mob in eastern Jharkhand state last year after a rumour spread on WhatsApp that they were child-traffickers.

‘Missing’ Comedian Sidharth Sagar Of Kapil Sharma Show Alleges ‘Mental Harassment’ By Family

March 31, 2018 by Nasheman

Comedian Sidharth Sagar, who used to feature on The Kapil Sharma Show as ‘selfie mausi’, trended a great deal on Thursday after a friend of his uploaded photos of the actor, inquiring about his whereabouts. On Friday, there arrived a video on the young comedian’s Instagram account (which is unverified), in which he says he decided to respond to his well-wishers via an Instagram message. Sidharth, who is reported to have been missing for four-six months, alleged he was mentally harassed by his family, adding that he had even registered a non-cognizable report with the police against his family but that only made things worse for him.

“Hi everyone, I have been getting a lot of calls from my friends and the media to ask me if I’m alright, asking where I am and how I am. I have been through a lot of difficulties recently. I had filed an NC against my family for which they created a lot of problems for me. I have been mentally harassed and been through a lot,” Sidharth says in the Instagram video.

Sidharth Sagar, who reportedly had a rather troubled relation with his mother, said that he has more to share and will soon address the media. “I have received a lot of support and help from where I am right now. I will speak about my ordeal to the media in a day or two. I will share in detail of what I’ve been through,” he adds in the video.
Earlier, a Facebook profile of Somi Saxena, who is said to be Sidharth’s friend, posted this: “You guys remember him Sidharth Sagar aka Selfie Mausi or Naseer? This guy is missing since four months, last seen on 18 November, 2017.” However, this post appears to have been deleted now.

If you remember, sometime in 2016, Sidharth Sagar had also made headlines for his reported romance with Comedy Classes co-star Subuhi Joshi. According to reports, the two parted ways after Sidharth’s mother abused and threatened Subuhi.

Video showing filthy kitchen conditions of bakery goes viral, officials act late

March 31, 2018 by Nasheman

People in the city had gleefully been munching on a variety of snacks from their favourite bakeries until a video footage of the miserable conditions of an eatery’s godown went viral.

On Wednesday, National Environment Care Federation state secretary Shashidhar Shetty stumbled upon water leakage from a latrine in a multi-storeyed building. Shetty sought to know where the water was being collected. To his dismay, the environmentalist realised that the toilet water was getting accumulated near the godown of a popular bakery. The video shows food kept uncovered in this tiny godown.
Notwithstanding this, Shetty entered the kitchen and filmed the filthy conditions in which the godown was being operated. The video shows dye used in garment factories and grease being used to make the snacks look colourful and attractive.
The video has garnered around 5,000 shares and 1.30 lakh views in 48 hours on a social networking site.
Shetty alleged the situation is similar in several bakeries and eateries across the city. Despite apprising the government officials concerned of the situation immediately, the latter seemed reluctant to address the issue.

After two days, when they finally visited the godown on Friday, the shopkeepers had already shifted their commodities out and left no traces of evidence there. It appears that they may have vacated the godown after having accessed the video.
“The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is a sham,” Shetty alleged.

Dr Manjayya Shetty, health officer, Mangaluru City Corporation, however said he had acted upon the complaint lodged verbally by Shetty. However, he could not take immediate action as he did not know the exact location of the godown.
“I visited the godown along with the food and safety officer and others. They have cleaned the godown and shifted all items out. We have taken samples of food items which we will be sending to a food laboratory in Mysuru. The report may be out in 15 days. We have locked the godown,” Dr Shetty said.

Dubai cops act on those spreading fake news on quality of Kalyan Jewellers gold

March 31, 2018 by Nasheman

The Dubai Public Prosecution has directed the Dubai Police to initiate criminal proceedings against five people, for spreading false information about Kalyan Jewellers.

All the five accused are of Indian origin and face charges of cyber crime and abuse using the internet or social media platform. The action was initiated based on a complaint filed by the company in November last year, following a series of posts online, that attacked the brand.

The action comes in the wake of several false social media posts that claimed that the gold sold by the jewellery brand was fake. One version of the post claimed that owners of Kalyan Jewellers in Dubai, was arrested for selling fake gold ornaments.

According to Kalyan Jewellers, one of the five people under the scanner, has during the course of the investigation, admitted that he had logged in and slandered the company.

Even as Dubai police started investigation on the complaint, recently, more fake posts were circulated on social media, especially on WhatsApp. A latest post that is being widely circulated along with an invoice of purchase accused the jeweller of mixing wax in huge proportion in antique jewellery.

Brands must take social media slandering seriously

Speaking to TNM, Ramesh Kalyanaraman, Executive Director of Kalyan Jewellers, said that the brand takes social media slandering seriously and was particular that they would respond through a legal channel.

“The first thing which we did when the social media attack started was to counter it on our own accounts and post the truth there. Then we complained to the police and we were waiting for the end result. Today, we have got a confirmation from the Dubai police,” he said.

Saying that when it comes to purchasing gold, customers are always concerned about what they buy, Ramesh said:

“Customers spend time in ensuring that the gold they purchase is pure. With regard to antique jewellery, people are well aware that a certain quantity of wax is used and this is mentioned in the invoice. But even so, when such a fake message questioning the purity of the jewellery is shared online, fear is created. That is not only going to affect the brand, but also the industry. That’s why we reacted fast in India,” he said.

Saying that it is extremely important for brands to clear the air as soon as possible when false information about the brand begins to circulate, Ramesh said, “Unfortunately, brands can clear the air only in their own official social media pages. But that does not get shared as much as a post meant to defame the brand. People should exercise caution when they receive these kind of posts,” he said.

Commenting on the development, Chairman and Managing Director of Kalyan Jewellers TS Kalyanaraman said:

“It is very reassuring to see the steps taken by the Dubai Police to contain social media abusers. Perpetrators should know that social media slandering will not be taken lightly. A brand’s reputation is built over years by the contribution and hard work of many people. Such instances of fake propaganda by a few irresponsible individuals, is an attempt to tarnish the

image and reputation of brands. These acts have deep impact on the emotions of all those associated with the brand and the company. I thank the UAE’s legal system and the Dubai Police for taking strict measures in preventing cybercrimes and establishing the truth in such situations.”
