Bollywood celebrities have become the unspoken Gods of the country. The kind of devotion the public worships them with is something beyond the level of understanding. People religiously follow their favourite film stars; therefore, Bollywood celebs have now become one of the best mediums to connect with the masses. One of the best ways in which Bollywood is affecting their lives is by spreading awareness about some of the most crucial concerns of our society.

Ajaz Khan who gears up for his next release, LOVE DAY walked the ramp for leading Jewellers of The World- Gitanjali Group in association with designer Shaina NC for the “BETI” foundation. Looking dapper in a black suit, Ajaz was overwhelmed to have got a chance to be a part of the “BETI” movement.

When a celebrity stands up for a cause, he does not actually stand alone! With him stand his millions of fans who blindly follow their favourite stars as the ultimate preachers”

Continuing further he averred, “Life without friends is like living in hell but when you have friends who are no less than devils can make your life a living hell. But then, that’s what friends are for to make your life hell and then burn with you in the hell. This is what the upcoming film “LOVE DAY” is all about.

It is a journey of 3 friends where we bring out the true meaning of friendship. The story revolves around these three; where Monty (Ajaz khan) introduces Harry (Harsh Nagar) & Sandy (Sahil Anand) to all the wrong things right from childhood. Former Goa minister Churchill Alemao arrested in Louis Berger bribery case

August 6, 2015 by Nasheman

Churchill Alemao

Panaji: Former Goa Public Works Department Minister Churchill Alemao has been arrested by the crime branch in connection with the Louis Berger bribery case.

Alemao was arrested under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and 120 (B) of the Indian Penal Code. The former minister claimed his arrest was part of a political conspiracy and said he was innocent.

“I am happy they have arrested me.This is a political game. I have not done any wrong,” Alemao told PTI while being taken for medical examination during the wee hours today.

“Why should I go for anticipatory bail.I am innocent. I have not done anything wrong,” said Alemao when asked why he didn’t move anticipatory bail plea.

Crime Branch officials said the team had gone to arrest Alemao at his residence at Varca in South Goa. “But Alemao was at Agassaim village for a private function from where he was picked up.After initial questioning at crime branch office, he was placed under arrest,” a senior official said on the condition of anonymity.

The former minister was questioned twice along with former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat by crime branch in past. Kamat had moved the court yesterday fearing arrest in connection with the case.

Alemao was state PWD minister when US-based company Louis Berger officials allegedly paid bribe to win consultancy for water augmentation and sewerage pipeline project under Japan international cooperation agency (JICA).

“This is politically motivated case. When it comes to politicians all the books of law are kept on the shelf,” said Mike Mehta, lawyer for Alemao, who had come to meet him at crime branch office during the wee hours.

He said Alemao had anticipated the arrest and was ready for it anytime. “He could have gone for anticipatory bail but he refused to go for it. He wanted to face the investigators,” said Mehta.

The crime branch officials took Alemao for medical check up at Goa Medical College and Hospital during the wee hours and the former minister was later sent to police lock up.

“Alemao was reluctant to go for medical examination due to which it was delayed by almost three hours,” said a crime branch official. He would be produced before a local court later today.

Fortis launches working mothers’ guide to breastfeeding

August 5, 2015 by Nasheman

The booklet, Breastfeeding for Working Mothers, gives valuable tips to help working women continue breastfeeding while they work and support their right to a safe and friendly home and workplace

Bengaluru: The WHO, UNICEF and Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI) has called for concerted global action to support women to combine breastfeeding and work. Whether a woman is working in the formal, non-formal or home setting, it is necessary that she is empowered in claiming her and her baby’s right to breastfeed. Fortis Hospitals has always endeavored to promote the importance of breastfeeding among expectant mothers and help them to do it the right way.

In keeping with the theme of World Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7) declared by the World Alliance for Breast Feeding Action (WABA), ‘Breast feeding and work – let’s make it work,’ the Fortis team has initiated a campaign to create awareness about the need to support and empower a working woman to breastfeed her baby.

Renowned theatre personality Arundhati Nag launched the book ‘Breastfeeding for Working Mothers’ authored by lactation expert Mrs Joyce Jayaseelan and Dr. Anita K Mohan, Consultant Gynaecologist & Obstetrician, The Nest, Fortis Hospitals, Bannerghatta Road. The booklet gives invaluable tips to working mothers on the importance of breastfeeding, the best ways to do it while working, how they can adequately breastfeed their little ones exclusively for six months despite starting work and how to optimise the facilities in the workplace to breastfeed their baby.

The booklet is also helpful in suggesting ways to express and store breast milk, using a breast pump, breastfeeding in public and how working mothers can handle the stress of home and workplace with the additional responsibility of caring for their newborn.

“Through this book we want to reiterate that mother’s milk is the most important food for the newborn and is superior to any other nutrient that might be given to the baby. The book helps expectant mothers prepare for breastfeeding and introduces them to the importance of initiating it within an hour. Helping a working mother integrate productive work and breastfeeding practice is a complex task that needs diverse strategies and support from various quarters. The working mother should be given valuable information and has to be encouraged to breastfeed her baby in a safe and caring environment, whether she is at home or the workplace,” explains Joyce Jayaseelan, counsellor and lactation consultant at Fortis Hospitals.

The WHO and UNICEF jointly launched the breastfeeding promotion programme a couple of decades ago and WABA and the Government of India has taken this forward by having its own programmes under the BPNI (Breast Feeding Promotion Network Of India). The campaign aims to promote maternity protection with much stronger maternity entitlements, and hopes to initiate more country actions on improving national laws and practices. It also creates awareness about the working woman’s right to breastfeed and calls for more other and breastfeeding-friendly workplaces.

“Working mothers have to be supported to help them breastfeed their baby with an aim to bring down the Infant Mortality Rate which is still quite high in India. This will happen if employers make an effort to become mother and breastfeeding friendly and implement supportive practices to enable the woman to breastfeed,” says Dr Anita K Mohan, consultant obstetrician & gynaecologist at Fortis Hospitals.

The hospital is organising a week-long programme to observe World Breastfeeding Week. The various activities include fun and learning workshop for fathers-to-be on how to take care of their little one, how to change a diaper, correct positions to hold the baby and on how they can be a source of support to their wives, training programme on Optimal Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) Practices, on the basis of WHO Guidelines for nurses. Other programmes include talks for employees and spouses, apartments and corporates on fit mothers and responsible parenthood from Aug 3-5 and a poster competition on breastfeeding and work and quiz for employees.

FTII Row: Film-maker Girish Kasaravalli slams Paresh Rawal for Rahul Gandhi jibe

August 5, 2015 by Nasheman

girish-kasaravalli-slams-paresh-rawal

Bengaluru: National Award-winning film-maker Girish Kasaravalli today hit out at BJP MP and actor Paresh Rawal for his jibe at Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi inconnection with the row over the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as the FTII chairman.

Responding sharply to Rawal’s remark whether the striking students of the premier Pune institute were seeing an “actor” in Gandhi if Chauhan was, for them, a “political worker”, the Kannada director told PTI, “That is a stupid argument… If he (Rawal) says it is wrong, then that person does not understand democracy at all.”

Kasaravalli said that the students protesting against Chauhan’s appointment have not accepted Gandhi as their chairperson, but were seeking his help to take the issue to Parliament.

“They are not accepting Gandhi as chairperson. They areseeking his help and support; in a democracy, you go to MPs for support. What’s wrong in that,” he said.

In a dig at the Congress leader for “politicising” the FTII issue, Rawal had said, “I just want to ask the students at FTII that if they are seeing a political worker in Gajendra Chauhan, then are they seeing an actor in Rahul Gandhi?”

Kasaravalli, meanwhile, said that in case the protesters were to accept Gandhi as their chairperson, then he would be the first to raise his voice against such a development.

“If they accept Gandhi as the chairperson, I will be the first person not to accept that,” he said.

Asked if he would accept actor-turned-BJP leaders Vinod Khanna, Hema Malini and Shatrughan Sinha as the FTII chairperson, Kasaravalli said, “We are demanding a committee to be formed to find a replacement. That is left to the committee. How can I say?”

As to whether Nana Patekar, for him, could be a choice for the said post, he averred, “I know Nana Patekar as an actor. I do not know about his film-making abilities. For me, the FTII chairperson should be a complete film-maker.”

Kasaravalli further said that the post should not be given to a member of a particular political party as that would not the right approach.

“UR Ananthamurthy and Mrinal Sen were appointed by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee and previous UPA governments, respectively, knowing full well that they were critics of BJP and Congress,” he added.

Supporting the cause of the protesters, Kasaravalli sought the resignation of Chauhan saying he is an “ill-informed” film personality, even if a good actor.

“Chauhan should be replaced or resign himself. He is ill-informed. He is not the right choice. When you have legendary film personalities, why bring the young man. He is not a senior. He is not a seasoned man,” Kasaravalli said.

The militant strike was the first in Udhampur district in over a decade coming days after terrorists attacked Dinanagar Police Station in Gurdaspur in Punjab.

Cafe built over Jerusalem Islamic graves sparks anger

The opening of a cafe in Jerusalem built over a revered Islamic cemetery has sparked condemnation and anger from the Muslim community.

The Aqsa Foundation for Endowment and Heritage said on Tuesday that the construction of the site was part of an Israeli plan that aims to demolish “everything related to Arabic Islamic history on this land”.

Landwer Cafe’s Independence Garden branch opened on Sunday on part of an area of land located between occupied East Jerusalem, which is predominantly Arab, and West Jerusalem. The area was being transformed into a park.

For centuries, the land housed the Maaman Allah cemetery, the oldest and largest Muslim graveyard in the country, and is believed to contain the remains of some of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad.

The owner of the restaurant told Al Jazeera that he did not know there was a grave under the cafe, but refused to make further comments.

“It’s not just the loss of the cemetery that angers the Palestinians. The cafe’s selling of alcohol [forbidden in Islam] is seen as a grave violation of the sanctity of the Islamic site,” Al Jazeera’s Elias Karram, reporting from Jerusalem, said.

The cafe is just one part of a plan that includes the construction on the site of 192 housing units, a 480-room hotel, commercial spaces, parking and other elements, Israel’s Haaretz newspaper reported.

A Museum of Tolerance is also being built in the area.

The construction began in 2011, but after skeletal remains were found, the Islamic Movement, which aims to advocate Islam among Israeli Arabs, along with other entities, filed a petition to the High Court of Justice.

The work was interrupted but soon resumed after the court eventually granted permission.

“All these projects are being constructed over the skulls of Muslims buried in the cemetery … cemeteries are supposed to be protected in all religious beliefs and international conventions,” Amir Khatib, the head of the Umm al-Fahm-based Aqsa Foundation for Endowment and Heritage, said.

Maaman Allah cemetery has a historic and religious significance because it includes the remains of a number of revered Islamic figures who participated in the conquest of Jerusalem in the seventh century.

Non-bailable warrant issued against Lalit Modi

August 5, 2015 by Nasheman

Lalit Modi

Mumbai: A special court here issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against former IPL chairman Lalit Modi on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in a money-laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Last month, the ED has moved the Special court seeking issue of arrest warrant for investigating the case against the business tycoon and cricket manager.

Despite repeated attempts, Modi’s lawyers did not respond to calls and SMSes on his reaction in the matter.

When the matter came up before the court on Tuesday, Special Judge P.R. Bhavake wanted to know from the ED how an arrest warrant could be issued without a charge-sheet being filed in the case and whether the court had powers to do so.

ED counsel H. Venegaonkar submitted that under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the cases follow a different format compared to the regular criminal cases.

Besides, the lawyer contended that since the case was in the pre-investigation stage, the Special Court has the jurisdiction to issue the NBW.

With the issue of the NBW, Modi faces arrest upon return to India and also the possibility of a Red Corner Notice if he fails to turn up.

The ED approached the Special Court after Modi – currently residing in London since 2010 – failed to respond to its summons last month.

The ED had filed the case against Modi in 2012 under the PMLA in connection with a mega-deal for IPL telecast rights.

The ED action followed a case lodged by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Chennai against Modi and others pertaining to the same matter.
