Welfare Party of India president gets death threat call from Ravi Poojary

February 20, 2016 by Nasheman

Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas

New Delhi: Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas, father of Umar Khalid, a PhD scholar at Jawaharlal Nehru University, has claimed that he received a “death threat call from underworld don Ravi Poojary”.

Syed Ilyas is the all India president of Welfare Party of India and one of the senior leaders of Jama’ath-e-Islami Hind.

He has filed a complaint at the Jamia Nagar police station in this connection. He had yesterday expressed his disappointment over his son being branded as a ‘terrorist’ because of his past.

Rasool Ilyas had told media that it was extremely unfortunate that he was being singled out from among the ten organisers of the event at the JNU because he is a Muslim.

Ilyas further said that his son was being branded as the chief organiser and mastermind because he is a Muslim. He said that judiciary must decide whether his son is guilty.

Movie Review: ‘Direct Ishq’ is a run of the mill fare masala entertainer which will attract viewers of single theatre

February 19, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Direct Ishq

Producer: Pradeep Sharma
Director: Rajeev S. Ruia
Star Cast: Rajniesh Dugall, Arjun Bijlani, Nidhi Subaiah, Hemant Pandey, Sanoj Dube, Padam Singh, Rajkumar Kanojia etc
Genre: Rom Com
Verdict: AVERAGE

Director Rajeev S. Ruia’s earlier claim to fame has been a series of interesting films like My Friend Ganesha in its varied avatars but in his latest offering Direct Ishq he has gone slightly overboard.

Plot: Vicky Shukla (Rajniesh Duggall) is a local boy from Banaras. A president of the Kaashi Vidyapeeth, Vicky is a rough and tough, aggressive boy who believes in always having a revolver with him, because he is always up for a fight. But this boldness turns into complete shyness when interacting with girls. He soon meets Dolly Pandey (Nidhi Subhaiah), who is bubbly, mischievous and doll like, and falls in love with her. On the other hand Kabeer Bajpai (Arjun Bijlani) is a smart and good looking boy born in a rich family of Banaras but educated in Mumbai and works there doing music shows and events. His grandmother wants to fix him up with her friend’s daughter, but instead Kabeer Bajpai meets Dolly Pandey and also falls in love with her, while helping her make a career as a professional singer.

Aces: The performance of the trio of actors is impressive. Rajniesh Dugall is lovable as a rough and tough guy of village with a good screen presence. Nidhi Subaiah is good to some extent but not entirely convincing and as for debutante Arjun Bijlani he is okay but the song and dance routine does not seem to be his cup of tea.

Minuses: It lacks good musical track in spite of the fact that the triangular love story has a musical rock band backdrop.

Last Word: Direct Ishq is a masala entertainer especially meant for the mass audience of single theatre but it won’t curry much favour with the classy audience of multiplex.

Movie Review: ‘Spotlight’ is a highly sensitive & riveting movie about child sex abuse in the Catholic church

February 19, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

Spotlight

Producer: Blye Pagon Faust, Steve Golin, Nicole Rocklin & Micheal Sugar
Director: Tom McCarthy
Star Cast: Mark Ruffalo, Micheal Keaton, Racheal McAdams, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery, Stanley Tucci & Brian D’Arcy James
Genre: Suspense
Verdict: GOOD

After having directed many films like Meet The Parents, Good night and Good Luck director Tom McCarty has touched upon a sensitive subject of child sex abuse in the Catholic Church.

Plot: Spotlight narrates the true story of the Pulitzer Prize – winning Boston Globe investigation that rocked the city and caused a crisis in one of the world’s oldest and most trusted institutions. When the newspaper’s tenacious “Spotlight” team of reporters delves into allegations of child sex abuse in the Catholic Church, their year – long investigation uncovers a decades – long cover – up at the highest levels of Boston’s religious, legal, and Government establishment, touching off a wave of revelations around the world. Directed by Academy Award -nominee Tom McCarthy, Spotlight is a tense investigative dramatic -thriller, tracing the steps to one of the biggest cover – ups in modern times.

Aces: The finest performances of the entire ensemble cast and the credit for which undoubtedly goes to Tom McCarthy at helm of the directorial affair.

Minuses: The long yawn inducing boring conversations amongst themselves of the members of the fourth estate in the press room and in the 1st half of the film it hardly moves out of the press room.

Last Word: Spotlight is a very relevant and sensitive film which may be liked by classy audience but may not be palatable for the mass audience.

Priests perform purification ritual after Dalit man takes bath in temple pond

February 19, 2016 by Nasheman

temple-pond-purification

Kozhikode: A purification ritual was performed at a temple in Kozhikode by the priests after a Dalit man took a bath in the temple pond.

The incident happened at the Kondamvalli Ayyappa Temple, near Koyilandi in Kozhikode, on January 26, 2016.

“A committee was formed to renovate the temple pond, which was lying in a dilapidated state. A Dalit man was chosen as the president of the committee. The temple authorities later removed him from the post after the completion of the first phase of renovation works. Later, they finished the renovation work and dedicated the pond to the temple on October 17, 2015. The dedication ceremony was conducted by the priests. As part of the ceremony, it was the Dalit man who had given Dakshina to the temple Tantri and he had conducted the snanam (bathing),” Dalit leaders said at a press meeting.

“However, there were some people who were not satisfied with a Dalit man performing snanam (bathing). So, they organised a rededication ceremony on January 26. They organised a purification puja in the temple pond. The snanam (bathing) ritual was then conducted by an upper caste man.  Neither the temple committee nor the temple Tantri was aware of it,” they said alleging that it was part of a move to bring back the caste system in Kerala.

“The rededication ceremony was conducted by Koomulli Karunaakaran, president of Chengottukaavu grama panchayat. Former MLA P.Vishwan was also present at the event,” they said.

“Dalits and other social activists should come forward against such move,” they added.

Bharathiya Pattika Samajan leaders M.M Sreedharan, P.M.B Naderi and Saseendran Bappankaavu were present at the press meeting.

Jat quota stir turns violent in Rohtak, 1 killed, 9 injured in police firing

February 19, 2016 by Nasheman

jat

Rohtak: At least one person was reported killed and nine others were seriously injured today near the Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) campus in Rohtak, Haryana, as police opened fire on Jat protesters seeking reservation.

The protesters turned violent and set on fire the house of Haryana Finance Minister Captain Abhimanyu. They also torched a police vehicle.

Meanwhile, the Haryana Police has imposed Section 144 in the volatile areas.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today spoke to Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on the issue. Rajnath told Khattar that 24 companies of paramilitary forces have been sent to Haryana to maintain law and order in the state and assured to send more if needed. Earlier, the protesters accused Khattar of resisting their demand as he was “not from the community” even as the state government called an all-party meeting to end the impasse.

Jat community protesters have been protesting, after talks between leaders of the community and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar failed to resolve the reservation issue.

Jat leaders said that the agitation will not be withdrawn till the Khattar government comes out with substantive action on their demand for reservation for Jat community in government jobs and educational institutions.

The Haryana government on Wednesday had announced doubling of the quota for the EBC (Economically Backward Classes) category from 10 to 20 per cent after the meeting with Jat leaders. The Jats have rejected the move.

Turkey’s capital Ankara rocked by deadly explosion

February 18, 2016 by Nasheman

At least 28 killed and 61 wounded after car bomb reportedly targets military personnel travelling in heart of city.

Ankara-car-bomb

by Al Jazeera

At least 28 people have been killed and 61 more wounded in a large explosion targeting a military vehicle in heart of the Turkish capital of Ankara.

Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr, reporting from Gaziantep, said officials believe a car bomb had caused the explosion on Wednesday evening and the target had been Turkish military personnel, who were travelling in a vehicle which was stopped at a traffic light.

The death toll rose steadily on Wednesday night, with those wounded in the blast sent to hospitals across the city.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for an urgent emergency meeting with top level security officials in Ankara.

“We will continue our fight against the pawns that carry out such attacks, which know no moral or humanitarian bounds, and the forces behind them with more determination every day,” Erdogan said in a statement.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but government officials said they were treating the incident as a “terrorist” attack.

Analysts and unnamed Turkish officials said the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) armed group would be among the leading suspects.

The explosion was heard across the capital when it went off at about 6.15pm local time.

The attack happened at the height of evening rush hour, not far from Turkey’s parliament, government buildings and military headquarters.

Witnesses shared images on social media showing a large plume of smoke rising into the sky and and local news footage showed a large fire burning at the site of the explosion.

“This is really in the heart of the Turkish capital – it is clearly a message to the Turkish government,” Khodr said.

“This is the fourth major explosion in Turkey in the past few months.”

‘Terrorist’ act

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said in a speech that the “blatant, treacherous attack” was well organised.

Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said on Twitter the attack was an act of terrorism. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, who had been due to leave for a trip to Brussels later on Wednesday, cancelled the trip, an official in his office said.

A Saudi-born Syrian suicide bomber, widely believed to be inspired by the Isamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), detonated a bomb in the historic district of Istanbulin January, killing at least 10 people and injuring 15 others.

Turkey has become a target for ISIL, with two bombings last year blamed on the armed group in the town of Suruc near the Syrian border and in the capital Ankara. The latter killed more than 100 people.

Violence has also escalated in the mainly Kurdish southeast since a two-year ceasefire collapsed in July between the state and the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) armed group, which has been fighting for three decades for Kurdish autonomy.
