VENICE FESTIVAL REVEALS ROBUST LINE UP

The Venice Film Festival has unveiled a potentially strong line up with enough studio / specialty titles top lining A – list stars including Jake Gyllenhaal, Johnny Depp & Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne to boost its role as a classy awards season platform, plus new works by Charlie Kaufman, Alexander Sokurov, Amos Gitai, Marco Bellocchio and many other high caliber international auteurs. CHINA HAD A RECORD JULY 2015 AT THE BOX OFFICE

The Chinese box office sector enjoyed its biggest Jul, 2015 of all time with a record $898 million (RMB5.49 billion) take. Ticket sales hit 159 million. China’s State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film & Television said recently that the Jul, 2015 performance lifted the cash total so far this year to RMB25.9 billion. That compares with the $4.82 billion (RMB29.6 billion) in the full 12 months of 2014. It seems likely that the 2014 total will be overtaken in late Aug, 2015 or early Sept, 2015. Chinese authorities have been operating a blackout period or “domestic film protection month,” since 19th Jun, 2015. During this time major foreign films are not allowed new releases. And SAPPRFT reported that Chinese films accounted for more than 95% of the Jul, 2015 total. Hits ‘Monster Hunt’, ‘Pancake Man’ & ‘Monkey King: Hero Is Back’ drove the total. While the blackout periods are regarded by Hollywood studios as Government orchestrated distortions of the Chinese cinema market, the current summer hiatus follows a huge 1st half for US made movies.

France’s ARP Selection & Switzerland’s LookNow Filmdistribution have acquired local distribution rights to Lars Kraume’s Nazi hunter drama ‘The People vs. Fritz Bauer’, which world premieres at the Locarno Film Festival in the Piazza Grande next week. Because of his distrust in the German justice system, Bauer contacts the Israeli secret service Mossad, and, in doing so, commits treason.

MUNDOFOX SHUTS DOWN NEWS DIVISION

MundoFox is now MundoMax. In the wake of Fox International Channels’ mid – Jul, 2015 decision to sell its stake in the joint venture to its Colombian partner RCN TV Group, MundoFox has taken on a new name. RCN, which now owns 100% of the fledgling US Spanish language network, “is wholly committed to the success of MundoMax,” MundoMax President Ibra Morales said in a statement. The broadcast network will be officially re -branded on its 3rd anniversary, on 13 Aug, 2015, said Morales, who joined the network in Jan, 2014, replacing FIC’s Emiliano Saccone. However, MundoMax has shuttered its news division, laying off almost 40 staffers in the process. ‘Although we have cancelled ‘Noticias MundoFox,’ RCN Television Group continues its dedication to bringing quality news coverage to the vibrant & dynamic US Hispanic community,” said Morales, who expects the bulk of MundoMax’s entertainment & news programming to debut next year. “We are currently evaluating our entire portfolio of content and restructuring it with the goal of bringing maximum value to all our stakeholders, including our viewers, clients & affiliates,” he added.

GERARD BANED FROM UKRAINE

French actor Gerard Depardieu, who was granted a Russian passport from Vladimir Putin in Jan, 2013, has been banned from entering Ukraine for 5 years. The ban, ordered by the country’s culture minister Ivan Kirilenko & proclaimed by the national secret services, reportedly sanctions Depardieu for making public comments suggesting that he supported Russia’s annexation of Crimea in Mar, 2014. Earlier this month, Kirilenko had revealed that Depardieu was blacklisted along with 117 prominent entertainment figures “who have spoken out in support of the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity & sovereignty.” Depardieu’s decision to become a Russian citizen 2 years caused a public backlash & diplomatic incident in France where he was accused of fleeing the country to avoid paying high taxes. The actor has however demonstrated his attachment to Russia throughout the years and routinely defends Russia’s international policies in the media. At 66, the actor is still leading a dynamic career. His latest movie, Guillaume Nicloux’s ‘Valley Of Love’ world premiered in competition at Cannes and he has been cast to topline ‘Marseille’, Netflix’s 1st French language original drama series.

DISCOVERY COMMUNICATIONS EXPANDS FOOTPRINT

In a further sign that Turkey is a hot TV market, Discovery Communications is expanding its Turkish footprint by forging a pact to buy free – to – air news & entertainment channel CNBC – e from prominent privately owned Dogus Media Group, which will also become Discovery’s exclusive ad sales representative in the country where consumer spending is steadily increasing. The strategic alliance with Dogus Media Group comes after Discovery opened a local office in 2012 and attained full distribution across all major Turkish pay – TV platforms. CNBC – e, which offers a mixture of news, international entertainment & scripted content which makes it popular with Turkish young adults, will mark Discovery’s 1st foray into Turkey’s pay – TV segment and increase its portfolio to 13 channels. The others are dedicated to documentaries, factual entertainment & sports. 4 of Discovery Networks’ pay – Tv channels currently rank within the top 10 most frequently watched pay TV channels in Turkey. Kasia Kieli, topper of Discovery Networks Central & Eastern Europe, Middle East & Africa boasted in a statement that the move “will see us reach the next level in Turkey.”

AUSTRIA IS THE NEW HOTSPOT

This Friday’s release of ‘Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation’ will put the spotlight on Austria, one of the principal locations for the Tom Cruise movie and the country’s 25% production incentive. Later this year, the release of James Bond movie ‘Spectre’ will underscore the attractions of the Central European territory, as Austria provided key locations for that movie too. Both productions received financial support from Film Location Austria, which offers a production incentive worth up to 25% of the local spend for projects that shoot for at least 5 days on location in Austria, up to an upper limit of Euros 1.5 million ($1.65 million). “Mission: Impossible” received Euros 750,000 ($824,000) against a local spend of Euros 3 million ($3.3 million), while ‘Spectre’ received Euros 1.5 million ($1.65 million), against a local spend of Euros 6 million ($6.59 million). The funding for ‘Spectre’ came both from Film Location Austria & regional funds. “Mission: Impossible” shot a number of sequences in the Austrian capital, Vienna, last year, the most spectacular of which was on the roof of the Vienna State Opera, which was also the venue of the movie’s world premiere last week.

AXEL ENDS MERGER TALKS

German broadcasting giant ProSiebenSat.1 Media & German publishing titan Axel Springer have ended an attempt to merge, which would have created a business worth around Euros 14.4 billion ($15.9 billion). “ProSieben is not planning or contemplating a merger with Axel Springer,” Julian Geist, a ProSiebenSat.1 spokesman, said recently. Instead the companies will jointly launch a project to promote digital start – ups. The merger would have faced regulatory & anti – trust challenges. A move by Springer 10 years ago to buy ProSiebenSat.1 failed after opposition from Germany’s media watchdog KEK and the country’s anti -trust body. However, the media landscape has changed since then, with the rise of digital rivals. Last year, the Federal Administrative Court over. ruled the KEK’s objections to a merger, and the more competitive landscape would probably nullify any anti – trust concerns. Another obstacle that may have stopped the merger is that the Springer family wanted to keep control of Axel Springer even if its stake dropped under 50% from the 57% share it has now.

HOLLYWOOD AGENCIES WORK WITH EUROPEAN COUNTERPARTS

The popularity of foreign talent in Hollywood movies & TV series has sparked a shakeup at US agencies, incentivizing them to team up with their counterparts across the globe. Most non – American stars now have 2 or 3 agents worldwide who work together on everything from reading scripts to negotiating contracts. And most important, they are willing to split commissions. “The world of acting has gotten much smaller,” says UTA’s Theresa Peters. “When a film gets made, whatever the language, casting agents are able to cast the net wider” because of Skype & digital auditions. From UTA’s Beverly Hills base, Peters reps foreign talent such as Sweden’s Alicia Vikander, Denmark’s Pilou Asbaek, France’s Tahar Rahim (“A Prophet”) & Charlotte Le Bon, a Canadian who now lives in France. Michael Douglas recently noted that Brits & Australians are taking many of the best American roles, but new waves of French & Scandinavian thesps & directors are also getting more & more work in US or on English language pictures financed in Europe.

‘DAMASCUS COVER’ NOT AMONGST RELATIVITY CASUALTIES

Hamburg issued the statement recently in response to “inaccurate reports” in a trade publication, not Variety, and BBC. Both erroneous reports have been corrected. LIBERTY GLOBAL UPS ITV STAKE

John Malone’s international cable TV company Liberty Global has increased its stake in UK broadcaster ITV to 9.9%. Liberty Global bought a 6.4% stake in ITV, whose shows include ‘The X Factor’ & ‘Downton Abbey’, last year from European pay TV operator Sky. “Given ITV’s operating & stock price performance, we were able to increase our stake to 9.9% with no incremental investment by hedging our existing equity position,” Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries said. “This investment remains an opportunistic one for us in our largest market. ITV is a well run company with attractive growth potential and we are pleased to increase our position as their largest shareholder.” Liberty Global stated that it does not intend to make an offer to acquire ITV, although it reserves the right to do so in the future. Liberty Global has been steadily increasing its investments in UK. It already owns UK pay TV company Virgin Media and half of All3Media, which comprises a wide range of TV production companies, mostly in UK but also in US. ITV itself has been acquiring production companies in UK & US.

Movie Review: Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation is a brilliantly crafted thrilling entertainment

August 7, 2015 by Nasheman

Mission Impossible - Rogue Nation

Banner: Bad robot Productions, Sky Dance Productions & TC Productions
Producers: J. J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger & Tom Cruise
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Star Cast: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Sean Harris & Alec Baldwin
Genre: Action Adventure
Verdict: Blockbuster

Christopher McQuarrie is an American screenwriter, director & producer, besides being a regular collaborator of director Bryan Singer. And of course he has done a brilliant job of the latest “Missin Impossible” franchise.

Plot: With the IMF disbanded & Ethan (Tom Cruise) out in the cold, the team now faces off against a network of highly skilled special agents, the Syndicate. These highly trained operatives are hell bent on creating a new world order through an escalating series of terrorist attacks. Ethan gathers his team & joins forces with disavowed British agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), who may or may not be a member of this rogue nation, as the group faces their most impossible mission yet.

Aces: Christopher McQuarrie’s perfect directional skills & powerhouse performances by Tom Cruise, the main protagonist, followed by Jeremy Renner & veteran actor Alec Baldwin.
Minuses: Amongst all the “Mission Impossible” franchises, ‘Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation” could have been crafted even more better as the “Mission Impossible” viewers expectations bar is rising with every sequel.

Last Word: Certainly not to be missed weekend fare for the entire family, in fact for one & all.

Aditya Pancholi slaps co-actor Vije Bhatia

August 6, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

aditya-pancholi-vije-bhatia

No this is not some kind of a breaking news conidering Aditya Pancholi’s temper tantrums throwing nature. But of late he seems to have sobered down a lot. It so happened that while shooting for his upcoming film ‘Lakhon hain yahan Dilwale’, Aditya Pancholi slapped the lead actor Vije Bhatia while shooting a scene.

On this eve Vije Bhatia later on averred, “Aditya sir walked up to me & without saying much slapped me in front of the entire unit, not only that he abused & insulted me for almost an hour, I was obviously annoyed & helpless at the same time, but the only choice I had was to give my best shot, for the scene I had with him.”

The scene went off so well that its one of the highlights of the film.

“It was only after we finished the scene that Aditya sir walked up to me & said that he’d done it on purpose so that I could get my anger right in the scene. He was generous enough to apologize for the incident. Since I don’t have much interaction with Aditya sir in the film, I didn’t have much of an opportunity to build a rapport with him, which was affecting the scene. Aditya sir has been the best support that I could have asked for, he’s helped me in everything, he also took keen interest in my look & grooming. I could not have asked for a better co star”.

Movie Review: Drishyam is a perfectly crafted masterpiece sans any loopholes

August 3, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

Drishyam

Director: Nishikant Kamat
Cast: Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta, Rajat Kapoor, Mrinal Jadhav, Kamlesh Sawant et al
Music: Vishal Bhardwaj & Sameer Phaterpekar

‘Drishyam’ has been made & re – remade in every South Indian languages possible and all the versions have ended up winning appreciative accolades galore. And now comes the Hindi version directed by an already reputed director named Nishikant Kamat, who needs no special introduction. Incidentally speaking this particular movie’s original version in Malyalam also had the same name ‘Drishyam’. Its other versions were ‘Drishya’ in Kannada, ‘Drushyam’ in Telugu and its most recent version was ‘Paapnasam’ in Tamil.

The re – directed & re – plotted scenario, to suit the Mumbaiyya sensibilities, of director Nishikant Kamat’s ‘Drishyam’ kick starts with Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) waiting at Pandolem police station in Goa. The story, then goes into a flashback mode in which it mirrors all the events that led Vijay in the present day situation. Vijay Salgaonkar is a middle class hard working businessman, running a cable TV business. His life revolves around movies and his family consisting of his wife Nandini Vijay Salgaonkar (Shriya Saran), his teenage daughter (Ishita Dutta) and his younger daughter. Life goes on pretty smoothly for the Salgaonkars, till one day his elder daughter bumps into a notorious Sam in a school camp. Despite repeated warnings, Sam doesn’t stop pestering her, so much so that he even plants a hidden camera in her washroom. Grabbing this ‘opportunity’ with both hands, Sam demands sexual favour from Vijay’s daughter in return for the MMS being deleted. And when Nandini intervenes, he asks for a sexual favour from Nandini instead. Raging with anger & helplessness, Vijay’s daughter hits Sam with a rod that results in him collapsing on the spot. The mother & daughter get furthermore shocked when they learn that Sam was the only son of none other than IG Meera Deshmukh (Tabu). Frightened & helpless they narrate their ordeal to Vijay when he returns back from his office. Vijay then hatches a master plan that will help his family to get rid from the clutches of the police. After this begins the cat & the mouse game between Vijay & Meera.

Director Nishikant Kamat has excelled in his directional skills and crafted a picture perfect masterpiece almost akin to all the versions. He has taken great pains & care to keep the legacy of the film’s ‘vision’ & all the versions alive. Adding & abetting him in his directional journey was the film’s ever perfect script with not even an iota of a loophole. He has created a perfect ambience oriented suspense to keep the cine goers interest alive from the starting point to the finishing line. In fact the entire, behind the scenes, team of the captain of the ship Nishikant Kamat deserves a special noteworthy mention. And his team comprises of Vishal Bhardwaj & Sameer Phaterpekar (music), Aarif Shaikh (editor), Avinash Arun (cinematographer) & above all Upendra Sidhye (script writer).

Performance wise it is but natural that the top most scorers are Ajay Devgn & Tabu. Their incidental & instinctive battle of histrionics is just seen to be believed. The Southern actress Shriya Saran succeeds in holding her fort amongst the 2 powerhouse performers namely Ajay Devgn & Tabu. That apart the other actors like Ishita Dutta, Rajat Kapoor, Mrinal Jadhav & Kamlesh Sawant too have acquitted themselves perfectly in their respective roles.

Tail Piece: Films like ‘Drishyam’ are made just once in a while. So guys just go for it at the earliest opportunity that you can avail of. Period!

Movie Review: ‘Janiva’ is a bold & meaningful film

August 3, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

janiva

Banner: Blue Eye Productions & Angel’s Production
Producer: Milind Vishnu, Arvind Kumar, Reshma Vishnu & Srman Jain
Director: Rajesh Ranshinge
Cast: Satya Manjrekar, débutantes Vaibhavi Sandilya, Anuradha Mukharjee, Devdutt Dani, Sanket Agarwal along with Kiran Karmarkar, Renuka Shahane, Atul Parchure, Indira Krishnan, Usha Nadkarni & Kishore Kadam

Director Rajesh Ranshinge, after creating ripples of successful waves on the small screen for almost a decade, has now stepped into the Marathi movies arena with a bold & meaningful film like ‘Janiva’ which means realisation. It underlines not only the trauma that a rape victim undergoes but also how a common boy metes out appropriate justice to the rape victim in his own way.

Sameer Deshpande, a common boy, is a tech savvy guy and always reaches out to help people in distress in his own way. He also runs a band with his 5 friends who also lives a carefree & lively life like him. Sameer gets disturbed once when he comes to know of a rape victim living a life like a vegetable since the last 3 decades. Her rapist has already served a sentence of 7 years but Sameer feels that this is not the right justice as compared to the 30 years trauma that the victim has undergone. So Sameer decides to take the law in his own hand. And then begins a long drawn out court battle.

Rajesh Ransinghe has handled the subject very sensitively displaying his directional expertise. But somewhere along the line he misses the boat precisely because the movie lacks conviction especially for the Marathi audiences who are so used to the tamasha & lavani oriented commercial trappings. He has indeed handled the court scenes brilliantly including extracting a finest performance from the senior actors like Renuka Shahane, Kishore Kadam & above veteran actress Usha Nadkarni. The lack of commercial trappings & romantic angle may not go down well with the cine goers. Yet the producers team headed by Milind Vishnu & director Rajesh Ranshinge deserves full marks for pulling a leaf out of real life and turning it into a an offbeat & a realistic film.

Performance wise it is the senior actors like Renuka Shahane & Kishore Kadam who walks away with all the honours as a defence lawyer & public prosecutor respectively. Satya Manjrekar, as the main protagonist, gives a good account of himself but he still has miles to traverse before he turns into a reliable actor. Other notable performances have been delivered by Indira Krishnan & Kiran Karmarkar as Sameer’s parents and of course veteran actor Usha Nadkarni as the rape victim’s Nurse & Caretaker.

Tail Piece: A good viewing for lovers of good cinema. Besides it will go down well with the festival circuit audiences.

Movie Review: ‘The Vatican Tapes’ is a yawn inducing and a most boring stuff one has ever seen

August 1, 2015 by Shaheen Raaj

the-vatican-tapes

Producer: Chris Cowles, Gary Lucchesi, Chris Morgan & Tom Rosenberg
Director: Mark Neveldine
Star Cast: Kathleen Robertson, Micheal Pena, Djimon Hounsou, Dougray Scott & John Patrick Amedori
Genre: Horror
Verdict: Average

More famous for their ghostly films, the Neveldine brothers are one of the Horror Masters of Hollywood, just as the Ramsay Brothers were the Horror Masters of Bollywood. The Vatican Tapes depicts the horrific happenings in a young woman’s life.

Plot: It follows the ultimate battle between good & evil & God versus Satan. Angela Holmes is an ordinary 27 – year – old until she begins to have a devastating effect on anyone close, causing serious injury & death. Holmes is examined and possession is suspected, but when the Vatican is called upon to exorcise the demon, the possession proves to be an ancient satanic force more powerful than ever imagined. It’s all up to Father Lozano to wage war for more than just Angela’s soul, but for the world as we know it.

Aces: The demonic & the exorcism scenario.

Minuses: Quite a repetitive and boring stuff which has nothing new or much to offer.

Last Word: Director Mark Neveldine in his debut solo effort could not hold the viewers interest in the prequel, yet he has given ample hint of a sequel. Anyways go ahead and give it a miss.
